Social Commentary, Horror Manga and the Left: From Ero-Guro to Junji Ito

Content Warning: gore and body horror

Horror manga has always had ties with revolutionary politics. Its beginnings, in fact, start with a Marxist-oriented magazine in the 1960s. Garo, an early gekiga magazine for avant-garde art, was one of the most important magazines for the development of horror manga. Its publication lasted almost 40 years (starting in 1964 and ending in 2002) and the earliest works of horror manga can be found in its pages, as well as a career starting point for the majority of early horror manga artists. Aside from this, horror manga has ties to the ero guro nansensu movement of the 1920s (arguably earlier if certain woodblock prints are considered “ero guro”), which has a clear revolutionary bent. Horror manga today may be more detached from this history, but there are still traces of this revolutionary ethos in modern works.

Garo, The Legend of Kamui, and Burakumin

Garo was an alternative magazine published in kashi-hon stores during the 1960s which became the center of the Japanese counterculture movement. At the time, manga’s main distribution channels were weekly magazines made to correspond to TV series, such as Astro Boy or Speed Racer. Because these magazines’ main demographic was children, stories catering to mature audiences had to find somewhere else to be published. This is where the kashi-hon’ya industry comes in; kashi-hon refers to a for-profit rental service for books (similar to the old video rental stores in the U.S.). These stores allowed for the publication of more mature stories and the rise of gekiga, a form of graphic novel that dealt with more explicit themes.

Garo was the most popular magazine distributed within this network. At its peak in 1970, 80,000 copies of the magazine were published. Its main artist, Shirato Sanpei, had notoriety because one of his stories, Ninja Bugeicho, received a film adaptation in 1967. Shirato was a Marxist known for his social commentary; Ninja Bugeicho itself is a story about a left-wing uprising among the peasant class.

1 - I'd say gore screaming show, the graphics are perfect, even though most of the routes follow a pattern each one of them is charming in its own way (not to mention the bad routes are actually elaborated lol), none of the LI is boring AND to be honest I am very found of some gorefest and gss DEFINITELY has some top tier guro

1 ½- togainu no chi, I just love the characters and the plot and the vibe and everything fuck tnc is absolutely flawless

2- saya no uta, it's short but every second of it is thrilling, same as tnc I love everything about it PLUS it's a classic

3- maybe.... enzai, the story is kinda messy and confused sometimes and some routes kinda suck BUT the ecchi scenes are so creative (thanks guildias and durer for that) and the vibe THE VIBE. The anatomically wrong graphics feel so right lol and the MC is one of my favorites ever

4- sweet pool, (I say fourth place but it's actually a second third place shut up) the story follows smoothly, it's really easy to get deeply involved with it but... I was kinda disappointed with Tetsuo having 400 routes and Zenya and Makoto having just one cuz I don't even like Tetsuo (fun fact sweet pool is the only vn that ever made me cry and I mean it, I cried like a baby playing it)

5- doki doki, what can I say? It's just a great game

6- I dunno anymore... needy girl overdose bc it's cute af and angel is adorable

7- dies irae, it focus too much on the fights and not too much on the daily life of the silly nazi ghost demons real interesting part of the game (also nor enough ero)

8- corpse party?? Is it even a vn?? Anyway corpse party sucks ass I just like it bc I read all the mangas and it's peak, the game was such a let down I didn't even finish it but it's cool if you like puzzles ig (me hates puzzle games)

Bonus: bible black, I'm currently playing this one and truth be told I am so deeply disappointed with the lack of the real good stuff (gorefest), I am under the impression that the anime is better than the game lol, also the graphics are pretty but not my favorite, by the other hand the MC is so funny he has such a wild imagination and pictures so many crazy scenarios, it makes the game quite hilarious THERES ALSO *KITAMI *the reason why the game is good

whump fanfic is a genre of fanfiction where the characters are just having a real bad time. an absolute go of it. just the most pessimistic, brutally depressing stuff you could imagine. 

guro is short for ero guro which is short for eroticized gore. it originates from manga and anime but the term’s spread overseas since the rise of the internet. 

so im fairly certain whats being implied here is that these kids are too busy wallowing in the trenches of self-prescribed misery to look around themselves and understand other people. hope this helps

After remembering that one gender you made mentioning Mai Chan's Daily Life, I had to read it online cuz I love ero guro and any type of gore that erotic/sexualized and I love it (im a gore manwhore lol) Plus I know there is a movie (I believe?) based on the manga itself.

Plus, sooner or later, ur interests are gonna get me to watch a movie based on a school shooting and read a book about an A.I. that doesn't have a mouth and wants to scream /ref /joke

if your bf had a healing factor, would you enjoy hurting him in debilitating and fatal (to normal people) ways? like stabbing, cracking some bones, etc?

I might be sadistic but I’ve never gotten off to gore. Causing/seeing permanent bodily harm is a major turn off of mine. Even if they really had healing abilities, I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to do it because I can’t separate myself from reality like that.
