Lyrics:
Here's my story, sad but true
It's about a girl that I once knew
She took my love then ran around
With every single guy in town
Ah, I should have known it from the very start
This girl will leave me with a broken heart
Now listen people what I'm telling you
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue
I miss her lips and the smile on her face
The touch of her hair and this girl's warm embrace
So if you don't wanna cry like I do
A-keep away from-a Runaround Sue
Ah, she likes to travel around
She'll love you but she'll put you down
Now people let me put you wise
Sue goes out with other guys
Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say
Keep away from-a Runaround Sue
Songwriter:

Paul's Sally G and some accidental associations
1 Funny coincidence (not so funny as the story about Elenor Rigby grave but funny) Long Tall Sally + Daddy G = Sally G Who is the Daddy G? He's from one popular song calls Quarter to Three (which bases on instrumental A Night with Daddy G-1 and was written by Gene Barge, Frank Guida and Joseph Royster, sung by Gary U.S. Bonds and released as single in May 1961). One of the authors, Gene Barge, has toured under the pseudonym 'Daddy G.' Even if our lads didn't hear the single in 1961, they should have heard it in 1963, during their European tour, when Gary U.S. Bonds headlined above the Beatles. But I think they heard it befor, because they played in early Hamburg era another song performed by Gary U.S. Bonds (in 1960 released as single and in 1961 on album Dance 'Til Quarter to Three with U.S. Bonds) - New Orleans.
One way or another, our lads were familiar with Daddy G. About Long Tall Sally we all know: one of their favourite numbers, way to John's heart etc.
Not about Sally G but Quarter to Three was the inspiration for Dion DiMucci hit Runaround Sue, which was written by Dion and Ernie Maresca (and which peaked at #1 on the Hot 100 in 1961 - and which has something in common with Girl for me)
2 In 1974, when Sally G was written and recorded, Paul and John met in L.A., jamed and whatever. Just carry it in my head.
3 … then I met a pretty* Who made a pretty big fool out of me** … The night life took me down to Printers Alley Where Sally sang a song behind the bar I ran my eyes across her as she sang a tangled mime I used to love to hear her sweet guitar***
* Well, I wake up in the morning I'm still dreaming 'bout you I'll tell, you pretty baby, I'm blue (Best Friend, 1972)
**
There’s no hard feelings or anything, but you just don’t hang around with your ex-wife. We’ve completely finished. ’Cos, you know, I’m just not that keen on John after all he’s done. I mean, you can be friendly with someone, and they can shit on you, and you’re just a fool if you keep friends with them. I’m not just going to lie down and let him shit on me again. I think he’s a bit daft, to tell you the truth. I talked to him about the Klein thing, and he’s so misinformed it’s ridiculous.
(Paul McCartney interviewed by student journalist Ian McNulty for the Hull University Torch, May 1972 [From The McCartney Legacy, Volume 1: 1969 – 1973 by Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair, 2022)
… and there was a band playing on a platform with a small audience in front of them. There was a guy up on the platform with curly, blondish hair, wearing a checked shirt - looking pretty good and quite fashionable - singing a song that I loved: the Del-Vikings' 'Come Go With Me'. He didn't know the words, but it didn't matter because none of us knew the words either. … There was some beer being drunk. Really, I was too young for that then, but, 'Sure, I'll have a sip.' I was trying to be in with the big lads who, being sixteen, were into pre-pub drinking. We went to the evening show and that was good, although a fight almost broke out; we'd heard that the gang from Garston was coming over. I was wondering what I had got myself into. I had only come over for the afternoon and now I was in Mafia land. But it all worked out fine, and I got on the piano. John was a little afternoon-pissed, leaning over my shoulder, breathing boozily. We were all a little sloshed. I thought, 'Bloody hell, who's this?' But he was enjoying what I was playing, 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' in C; and I knew 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Long Tall Sally'. Then I played guitar - upside down. I did 'Twenty Flight Rock', and knew all the words. The Quarry Men were so knocked out that I actually knew and could sing 'Twenty Flight Rock'. That's what got me into The Beatles.
(Paul about The Woolton Village Fête 6th July 1957, The Beatles Anthology, 2000)
4 Why d'you wanna do the things you do to me?
There's just as many geese, and they're flyin' down South As there are lies just pouring out of your mouth Hey, hey, hey, why do you treat me like you do? (Why Do You Treat Me Like You Do, Donovan, 1965)
Tell me why, why Why do you treat me so bad? You're the best friend, a man ever had… (Best Friend, 1972)
Why, tell me why, did you not treat me right? (I'm Looking Through You, 1965)
5 Me and Sally took up Things began to look up Me and her were going strong
I remember thinking, ‘He looks good – I wouldn’t mind being in a group with him’. A bit later we met up. I played him ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ and he seemed pretty impressed – maybe because I did know the words. Then, as you all know, he asked me to join the group, and so we began our trip together. We wrote our first songs together, we grew up together and we lived our lives together. And when we’d do it together, something special would happen. There’d be that little magic spark. I still remember his beery old breath when I met him here that day. But I soon came to love that old beery breath. And I loved John. I always was and still am a great fan of John’s. We had a lot of fun together and I still treasure those beautiful memories.
(Paul McCartney, from Beatles Monthly Book, N°256, August 1997)
6 Then she started lyin' I could see our love was dyin'
If I fell in love with you, Would you promise to be true (If I Fell, 1964)
… knowing that love is to share Each one believing that love never dies (Here, There And Everywhere, 1966)
PAUL: But what wasn't too clever was this idea of: 'I wasn't going to tell you till after we signed the new contract.' Good old John – he had to blurt it out. And that was it.
(The Beatles Anthology, 2000)
...John was saying, “I wasn’t gonna tell you until we’d done this contract,” and there were all sorts of weird little things like that which Klein was getting him into.
(Paul McCartney, November, 1983, interview with DJ Roger Scott)
7 I heard a voice say "Move along, move along" … Well, now I'm on my own again
But tomorrow may rain So I'll follow the sun (I'll Follow The Sun, 1964)
Just one kiss and I'll go Don't hide the tears that don't show As the June light turns to moonlight I'll be on my way (I'll Be On My Way, 1963)
8 I wonder if she ever really understood
I guess you never knew, dear boy What you had found… I guess you never saw, dear boy That love was there … I hope you never know how much you missed, dear boy How much you missed (Dear Boy, 1971)
You say that love is everything And what we need the most of I wish you knew, that's just how true My love was (No Words, 1973)
I may never tell you But baby you should know There may be a miracle And baby I love you so (Power Cut, 1973)
9 … they call her Sally, Sally G --> I never thought to ask her What the letter G stood for But I know for sure it wasn't good --> They were right I was wrong True love didn't last long
BUT!
You took the part that was the heart of me, Sally G
So,
Take a chance, Sally G
@i-am-the-oyster, how does that sound to you?

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Sock Hoppin' Sixties 1985 Pop / Girl Groups / Rock & Roll / R&B / Doo Wop
Alright, well, I feel like a little explanation of terminology is warranted here in order to better contextualize this one. If you've ever heard the term 'sock hop' before and thought that it was just some creative mid-20th century lingo for 'party,' you're not wrong, but a sock hop was originally something more specific: a dance event where shoes were not actually allowed to be worn at all. See, when this term was first coined in the mid-40s, people were dancing in shoes that had hard soles on them, and invariably, those soles would end up inflicting a lot of damage on the floors that were danced upon. So, as a result, in order to prevent all this carnage, a sock hop was a dance party that was typically held in a school cafeteria or gymnasium for teens, in which its attendees would be forced to get down without wearing any kind of footwear. Neat, huh?
However, as shoe technology advanced and sneakers started using rubber soles, the altogether ban on shoes was lifted; but the term still ended up sticking anyway—sort of like how we still refer to the raising and lowering of car windows as 'rolling them up and down,' even though we use buttons for that now instead of hand-cranks. So, as such, even though a bunch of different certain types of shoes had now been permitted at these gatherings, 'sock hop' was still used widely to describe pretty much any dance party that was largely attended by teens, regardless of any rules pertaining to what could or couldn't be worn on peoples' feet.
And if you ever wanted a soundtrack to what those sock hops were sounding like in the early 60s, then this comp here's your ticket; at least for about half an hour 😅. The vast majority of these tunes turned out to not only be hulking hits themselves, but ones that got plenty of burn at sock hops all across the US too. And even though it's a very short collection, it's still eclectic; there's girl group pop, there's rock & roll, there's R&B, and there's a little doo wop too. Classics like Dion's "Wanderer," Del Shannon's "Runaway," Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack," The Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back," and more. A whole bunch of nostalgic goodies for grandma and grandpa to seriously crack a hip to.
And what's more is that there's a little cleverness that went into the track sequencing here too—specifically the bookends, which are both songs that involved a guy by the name of Ernie Maresca. As a performer himself, Maresca only ended up being a one-hit wonder, but as a songwriter and composer, he achieved a whole lot more. So, fronting this comp is one of his biggest triumphs as a writer, Dion's "Wanderer," and closing it out is his lone solo hit, a super catchy rock & roll and doo wop banger called "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)" that went to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in 1960. Quintessentially infectious sock hop material right there.
At the end of the day, I'm not really sure why this album cover was chosen for this comp though. It doesn't appear to be depicting a sock hop of any kind and no one seems to be wearing much in the way of early 60s garb either. As I understand it, the people who participated in these Baby Boomer Classics shoots for the series' original mid-80s run were friends and family of the people who worked at the label that released it, JCI. These shoots were probably low-budget affairs themselves and couldn't afford the time or effort to depict folks having the time of their lives in a gym or cafeteria in accurate wardrobes, so they went with this instead. Regardless of this misleading photo, though, rest-assured, you'll find some of the glory days of the early 60s sock hops within this comp here.
Only two more releases from this series to go!

Today’s compilation:
Classic Old and Gold 1987 Pop / Pop-Rock / Doo Wop / Rock & Roll / R&B / Garage Rock / Girl Groups
You wouldn't know it from the album cover, but this is something of a retrospective look at a little New York City-based indie label called Laurie Records that thrived throughout the late 50s and 60s. Laurie played host to big acts such as Dion (& the Belmonts) and The Chiffons, and that's all I've ever really known them for until now. But as evidenced by this excellent collection of twenty tunes, Laurie was so much more than just those two acts.
I really wasn't expecting more than a few good, recognizable hits and maybe one or two dust-collecting gems on this CD, but the bulk of these actually turned out to be those dust-collecting gems instead 🤩. Phenomenal blends of pop, doo wop, and R&B abound within this CD, from one-hit wonders like Randy & the Rainbows' "Denise" and Music Explosion's garage rock classic, "A Little Bit of Soul," to no-hit wonders like Carlo Mastrangelo's amazing rock & roll-doo wop thing, “Ring a Ling,” that failed to chart nationally, but that New York DJ Murray the K fawned over. Ernie Maresca, who's known for co-writing Dion's "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer" is on here as well with his own great uptempo and booming rock & roll-doo wop bop and top-ten hit, "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)."
A lot of great songs in this CD that documents the history of Laurie Records, and a vast majority of which I've never heard before in my life. A lot of these ended up charting in the top-twenty on Billboard's Hot 100 in their day, but they seem to have been long forgotten since then. So don't sleep on 'em, especially if you fancy yourself as a 50s and 60s oldies fiend!
Highlights:
