Long had the Fire belonged to the Fae.  It was power, and it was knowledge. It was sacred.  The humans did not possess it. They struggled along in darkness, only seeing the shadowed patterns the fire cast all around them, interpreting the motifs as truth. Never knowing the true meaning of light and warmth, those shadows were their only reality.  None treasured the Fire more than the High Lord of Autumn, and he kept its burning embers close to his greedy heart. From up on his dais – fire licking at his fingertips – he scoffed at the lower beings crawling along Earth’s crust, wrinkling his nose at their barbarism.  He urged his subjects to do the same.  Occasionally he shot his flames down onto the humans, letting them devour people and homes alike, laughing scornfully at his cruel jest. Treating their lives and deaths as mere entertainment for his depraved whims, the High Lord played with the humans as if their worth was null.  He urged his subjects to do the same.  The humans, eager to please their overlords, sacrificed their livestock in an attempt to halt the ravaging flames. The High Lord devoured their offerings, but when he again grew impatient and hungry, he burned the Earth anew. Remembering their last reprieve from the flames, the humans gave more of their precious sustenance to appease the Fae, hardly leaving any for themselves. Eternally gluttonous, the High Lord filled his belly with their immolated oxen, goats and sheep.  He urged his subjects to do the same.  But the High Lord’s eldest son, Eris, saw the treatment of the humans, and shame burned willfully in his chest from the strife. The next time his vicious father feasted on their hard earned provisions, he ate so much that he fell into a deep slumber. Eris crawled up the dais to the Autumn despot’s sleeping form and stole the fire from him, before starting his descent to the human lands.  When he reached the Earth, the cunning prince distributed the flame among the humans, enlightening them with knowledge, technology and civilization. As if rousing from a vivid dream, the humans saw the world as it was, and so shaped it in their own image. Pleased with their creative power, Eris returned to his father’s seat quietly, pretending never to have left at all.  But upon waking, the High Lord found that his flames had been taken from him, and he was furious. He turned to the humans and tried to seize his fire back, but it had been split into so many parts that he could never catch them all. Vowing to destroy them for their theft, the High Lord again directed his flames towards the Earth, but Eris – who by now loved the humans as his own kin – stopped his father by admitting his guilt.   Enraged by the treachery, the High Lord punished his son by chaining him to a rock upon the highest mountain in Prythian, where every day eagles would eat his immortal liver, and every night it grew back for another day of torment. It was a never ending cycle.  The pain of the tearing beaks became so unbearable that Eris pressed himself deeper and deeper into the rock until he became indistinguishable from it. Therefore, in the course of thousands of years, his deceit was forgotten – forgotten by the Fae; forgotten by the eagles; forgotten by himself.  Only the lowly humans remembered.  They commemorated Eris by creating an altar to him in the grove of their first academy, holding a festival in his honor where they lit a torch with the Fire he gifted them, then raced it along the streets of their newly built cities. Mirroring the chains in which Eris was trapped, they adorned themselves with wreaths made from the plants they cultivated, never forgetting his sacrifice.  And so, the fire gave life, and it took it away.  Generation upon generations of humans came and passed as the Fae sat sulking upon their thrones, never quite remembering where their unhappiness stemmed from.  But the glowing embers of one crucial sacrifice continued to warm the hearts and hearths of humans, the lone figure on the rock never more than a thought or prayer away.

Ok ever since I sent out that "what your characters would say is their favorite thing about their partners vs. their actual favorite" ask to a few friends I've been wanting to do it for my own OCs/ships so here goes:

Rae Would Say: Warren's eyes Her Actual Favorite: The moments when he shows his gentleness and kindness in subtle ways, like offering to help carry a stranger's groceries out to their car for them if he sees them struggling. He doesn't always believe he's a good person after what he's been through, but she loves to see how kindness still seems automatic to him despite that doubt.

Warren W. Would Say: The way Rae puts her hand on his back, right between his wings, when she comes up behind him His Actual Favorite: How unbelievably dedicated she is to protecting the things she loves - it can border on dangerous and that scares him, but he's also included in that list and it makes him feel valued and wanted.

Robin Would Say: How Peter can turn anything into a good time Her Actual Favorite: How much focus and attention he gives to her, especially when it comes to things like learning ASL or helping her through her TBI recovery. She knows slowing down isn't easy for him, but it means a lot that he's willing to take the time to learn and support her.

Would Say: Robin's singing voice His Actual Favorite: Genuinely her singing voice, though really it runs deeper than just liking the way it sounds - it's tied to how they first met, he finds it calming and just hearing her sing can make him happy after a bad day, and it's even more special since it took a while for her to start singing again after her TBI

Her Actual Favorite: The way Gia's willing to expand her comfort zone for her... that's not easy for her and Kate knows it, and even more once she has the context for everything Gia went through before, so it means a lot that she's willing to expand those boundaries.

Jasper Would Say: How he's always there for them - even when they've had fights, he always shows up when they need them Their Actual Favorite: Same as above, but with the context that their dad got into an accident just a few days after Jasper and Kyle got into a big fight, and Kyle still showed up and drove them across three states so they could be there for their dad- he really does show up when it counts

Kyle Would Say: How they don't flinch at the bad times, they just take it all in stride His Actual Favorite: How unafraid they are to be themself - it takes a lot of guts to be openly alt and openly queer in Louisiana, especially while still being a part of female-dominated spaces like nursing and roller derby, and he respects the hell out of them for it

Nikoletta Would Say: Abner's gentleness Her Actual Favorite: The way he always seems to notice when she needs attention or support, even when she's bad at noticing that for herself. He's good at pulling her away from her self-destructive and isolating spirals

Abner Would Say: *wouldn't actually be able to articulate any verbal thoughts, it's too on-the-spot and too personal His Actual Favorite: The way he never feels like a burden when it comes to her - he's able to speak his mind, he's able to express his wants and needs and have those things actually met instead of ignored, she remembers his routines, etc.

Jimmy Would Say: Lars' intelligence His Actual Favorite: The fact that no matter how much of a workhorse Lars can be, and no matter how much he might put up a show of being annoyed when Jimmy tries to coax him to take a break, he always does put a bookmark in his work if Jimmy asks. The theatrics are just for fun - he knows where Lars' priorities really lie.

Lars Would Say: Jimmy's genuine kindness and generosity His Actual Favorite: His intrinsic love for humanity and the people around him, no matter their background - not only surprising for a man of his background, but refreshing against a world of cynics.

Vivienne Would Say: How strong and competent he looks when he's working on the ship Its Actual Favorite: His pet names for her - she finds them endearing, for one, but it's also reassuring to have those little reminders of how he cares about her since she didn't get that affection or respect from her first husband

Wojchek Would Say: Her stories His Actual Favorite: How transparent it is - it wants something and it tells him without waiting for him to guess, she tells him she loves him all the time, she might enjoy playing with language but she's very clear about what she feels

Indigo Would Say: How well-spoken he is Her Actual Favorite: Just how much he cares about her - maybe that feels cheap, but for someone who's been on her own effectively from the beginning, there's something incredibly valuable about everything he's willing to do for her in both the big gestures and the little moments

Hux Would Say: How she's so unafraid to be herself His Actual Favorite: How she's always seen him as more than his past or his reputation; he can't change the past, but he's trying to be better, and her faith in him helps him fight for that.

Prometheus Would Say: His voice Their Actual Favorite: The way he always reaches for them. He's always got an arm around their shoulders, a hand on their knee when they're sitting down, an excuse to hold them when they take a break for the night... it's like he always wants to keep them close.

Corinthian Would Say: Their dedication to what they do His Actual Favorite: The fact that he's not exempt from their protectiveness if he were to harm the dreamers they defend - it seems a little backwards, but to him it helps keep things grounded, and it reminds him that they really see him for what he is and not just some romanticized image of him.

Trickster deities are a part of many mythologies around the world. For a deity to be considered a trickster, it must have certain characteristics, they must be 'fundamentally ambiguous and anomalous, [a] deceiver and trick-player, [a] shape-shifter or master of disguise, [a] situation inverter, [a] messenger and imitator of the gods, [a] sacred and lewd bricoeur [a tinker or fix-it person, noted for ingenuity in transforming anything at hand in order to form a creative solution]'. They 'violate priciples of social and natural order, playfully disrupting normal life and then re-establishing it on a new basis' by both questioning and mocking authority, resulting in disruptions to it. The cross boundaries of all kinds, including gender and species.

Anansi or Ananse of Akan folklore is most commonly a spider and is on of the most important characters of West African and African diaspora cultures. He originated in Ghana and spread from there via the Atlantic slave trade. While he is always depicted as male, he is called 'Aunt Nancy' and 'Sis' Nancy' in the Americas. He is usually depicted with a family of a wife, three sons, and a daughter. He is skilled and and wise in his speech. He was also seen as a symbol of slave resistance and survival among the enslaved African diaspora because of his ability to turn situations to his favor, no matter how powerful his oppressors were.

The Greeks had many trickster gods that took on various aspects of the trickster. Dionysus, the god of wine, madness, and ecstasy was a shape-shifter and androgynous, lending to his association with actors. Eris, goddess of discord, was famous (or infamous) for being the cause of the Trojan war by starting a fight between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, which was resolved by the Judgment of Paris, leading to the abduction of Helen. Hermes, the messanger of the gods, was the god of travelers, boundaries, and thieves, though he is also credited with creating the lyre to get out of trouble resulting from stealing Apollo's cattle. Pan, god of shepherds and flocks, is known for playing tricks on children for his own amusement.

Greeks also had many heroes who were tricksters. Odysseus outwitted Polyphemus by claiming to be 'no one' in order to escape. Prometheus tricked Zeus into accepting a sub-par offering and also stole fire from the gods after Zeus forbids humans from using it because of the trick. Sisyphus tricked death twice, extending his life, but angered the gods and was sentenced to pushing a bolder up a slope in Tartarus for the rest of eternity.

Many Native American people groups had a Coyote trickster. He tried to imitate the creator gods by creating people out of mud, though they became animals since Coyote didn't have the same power. He is also a messenger at times, as well as a cultural hero. He is capable of transformation, resurrection and 'medicine'. He finds sacred things for the people and also chances the course of rivers, creating new landscapes as he does. He was able to defeat Thunderbird with the 'help of the Spirit Chief'. Sometimes he is considered noble, other times malicious. He is often associated with music and capable of changing gender.

meleris thoughts below (and update spoilers):

I feel like the Olympic Update sheds new light on some of the conversations between Melinoe and Eris. Because I think Eris is a bit better at getting under her skin than Chronos or Prometheus or even Nemesis at times.

When people challenge Melinoe’s outlook, she often ignores them or shuts them down completely. She’s like a brick wall at times, she doesn’t listen when she doesn’t want to.

But Eris just keeps ranting and prodding at her however she pleases and is, if anything, encouraged by Melinoe’s frustration and annoyance.

Occasionally, Melinoe asks her to elaborate on her opinions and entertains her little thought experiments, if only to try (and fail) to comprehend her point of view. Despite herself, she’s drawn to Eris and wants to understand her perspective. But that would mean questioning the authority of the gods or, for that matter, Hecate. And she won’t let herself do that.

I like that Melinoe, stubborn as she is, has someone equally relentless at matching her freak challenging her perspective, even if Eris’ goal is just to piss her off and cause more problems. They're both equally capable of being petulant, callous and unreasonable, just in opposite directions. I think they should kiss.
