Eurovision 2004: The Interval Act and Other Performances
Two shows, two intervals! It's the first bit of new programming needed for this year's Eurovision. You can do the same postcards in both contests. The scoring sorts itself out, but what are you doing to do about the musical bits? You need something different for each show.
Starting with the semi-final and one of the weirdest interval acts there's ever been - and also one of the hardest to see today in context. A six-minute long comedy film featuring ABBA as puppets made by the Jim Henson workshop. It features the band auditioning in 1974 for a record company executive played by Rik Mayall.
Having this in the middle of what is a thoroughly Turkish show featuring traditional drumming is a bit odd to say the least. 2004 was the 30th anniversary of ABBAs win and since their fractious split in the 1980s, their popularity and pull was only increasing. The demand for appearances, reformations and shows was getting louder all the time - so how to achieve this when they were no wanting to appear publicly? Why not puppets?
The entire short was called ABBA - Our Last Video Ever, a title that carried with it the air of something celebratory, momentous, and definitively final. Something that had been wanted for more than a decade and was here. The reality didn't meet those expectations, it being more of a comedy sketch and with very little actually in the way of the members of ABBA.
If you bought or saw the full semi-final after the night it was show, the ABBA short wasn't there - you had to buy it separately, and for a while was exceedingly hard to find.
The Grand Final stuck more to tradition with lines of dancers, instrumentalists and drummers. All aspects of Turkish musical culture were covered in a presentation by the group Fire of Anatolia, a huge dance ensemble. The scale and tradition of it did harken back to Riverdance in terms of ambition, although the result didn't have the same impact.
The one other musical number was Sertab Erener opening the show with a reprise of her winning song Everyway that I Can as well as another of her songs Leave. The first song had the same choreography as her win, but with male dancers and Sertab herself was fully dressed in gold. For the second half of the show, a group of Sufi sama dancers spinning and whirling around her.
There was a mid-run break in the grand final - but this served as an attempt to go around watch parties being held in Europe, although the link-up mostly failed leaving the hosts to fill while adverts aired on TV.

The 104th Squad’s tastes in Music 🎶
Thank you @sonofthesaiyans for another lovely suggestion.
———
Eren - Generic pop and rock is what he likes the most. He mostly listens to Nickleback in private.
Mikasa - Mainly female pop music, but her family has her listen to traditional Japanese music too.
Armin - He’s been listening to classical music for both homework and enjoyment, mainly Beethoven.
Jean - Rock and hip hop to not seem stupid in public, but secretly adores Taylor Swift.
Marco - Listens to and practices acoustic music, to the point where he has a channel for his covers.
Connie - EDM is what he heard on the radio a lot as a child (Basshunter) and can never grow out of it.
Sasha - Due to her lifestyle, country is what she grew up with. Her parents often played Jonny Cash.
Historia - Classic pop like Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson is what she bops to almost every day.
Ymir - Just like Jean, rock is her jam and has a few albums of Linken Park at her home.
Annie - Alternative pop-punk like Avril Lavigne is what she can actually get into and makes her happy.
(It’s funny ‘cause she is designed after her)
Reiner - He’d listened to metal like AC/DC, if his mother would stop playing her ABBA albums at home.
Bertholdt - Enjoys any kind of music that his friends are into, but he kindly listens to Glee.
-
(I highly apologise if some of these don’t fit. I don’t really listen to many different genres of music myself)

DR FUN FACT: 11/21
Honestly I hate calling it this but idk what else to say. Fact about my DR? Idk. Anyway.
✮ ⋆ ˚。𖦹 ⋆。°✩✮ ⋆ ˚。𖦹 ⋆。°✩✮ ⋆ ˚。𖦹 ⋆。°✩
I have seen so many signs lately from the universe and I'm tweaking. I have seen 3:33 I kid you not everyday for months or like at least 4/7 days of the week for MONTHS. And usually 5:55 or 4:44 with it. I had a playlist on shuffle the other night and it was my DR playlist that has like 139 songs... and in my head it kinda just started singing Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish (I'll explain who's song that is in a sec) which is in there and I was like oh lol imagine it starts playing next that would be a crazy sign. Guess what mf song was next. I can't think of others but just a bunch of random shit that I'm like ....uhhh alright. BUT alas, back to the topic.
~Songs I associate with people in my DR~
Me & Levi:
My god there are so many, but here's three that I find the most meaningful. First is Hailey's Comet by Billie Eilish. They lyrics just perfectly capture our dynamic from Levi's perspective, of how he was the first to fall in love and it went against everything he believes in. Like literally every lyric in that song is perfect, I can't even choose one. I swear to god the damn song was made for us in another life.
The next one is Pluto Projector by Rex Orange County. This one more represents how I was the first person in his life (besides his mom) who truly understands him and sees him for him, not his strength or usefulness as a soldier or underground thug. Not only that, but I do everything I can to show him his self worth and that he deserves a beautiful life. That sometimes he doesn't even understand himself but somehow I always do.
Last one is Sweet by Cigarettes After Sex. This is more later when we are in that "we both know we have feelings for each other and show it in private but never actually admit it" phase lol. But just how we view each other and how the fact that I love him makes him feel, to truly know what it's like to be loved after so much misery and pain. It's also when he finally admits to himself that he is in love with me.
Me & Hange:
Birds Of a Feather by Billie. Okay, this one was more of a vibe at first to be honest. The melody of the song just kind of reminded me of us, our carefree and pure friendship. Like they're my sister, and the song just kinda gave me that vibe idk how to describe it. Since she's estranged from her family, and I don't really get along too well with my own sister, we just have such a deep family connection, like I truly do see her as my own. We stick together 🤞🏼
Me & Erwin:
Mockingbird by Eminem. I promise it makes sense lol. (He's not my dad) but basically stepped into that role in a way, and the song kinda represents how he tried his best to protect me growing up and still does. It also is a good representation of my situation with my mom (before anyone says I'm scripting trauma, no I am not. This is literally my situation here in my CR.) and how he worked hard to get in a stable position to take care of me but that came at a cost as his duties wound up taking him away for a while. Also the lyrics "But hey, What Daddy always tell you? Straighten up, little soldier. Stiffen up that upper lip. What you cryin' about? You got me" and how he'll do anything to see me smile.
There are more but also Slipping Through My Fingers the Mama mia version. Self explanatory i feel.
Me & Miche:
Slipping Through My Fingers but the ABBA version. Idk why specifically that one lol. But also kinda self explanatory, but just how he has watched me grown up and he's proud of who I have become and to be a part of my world. And that I'm growing up too quickly and as the protective Uncle, he just wants me to stay young and blissful forever.
Me & Eren & Levi:
Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex. Tea but me and Eren used to date since we were young kids to like second year of cadets ish. We are aged up so like until 15/16 ish. He was my first love, even though it was a young person's version of love, it still meant a lot. He is also one of the most important people in my life, and although I don't have romantic feelings for him and haven't in a while, he still lowkey does but he understands and it's completely normal between us. We are still just as inseparable, however as I start to get closer to Levi and develop romantic feelings for him, I kinda feel guilty. The song apparently is about falling for someone but having a hard time letting go of a past relationship and coming to terms with that. So although I am devoted to Levi, I still have my deep (non romantic) connection with Eren and I am worried about how it will affect him if he finds out about us. And how Levi is understanding of the situation and trusts me.
Miche & Erwin:
To Build A Home by The Cinematic Orchestra. I mentioned it briefly before but they grew up together. Basically the story I got was that they went to school together when they were super young like kindergarten, and Erwin was being bullied and Miche defended him, then they became friends. Instantly they were like brothers, and because Miche's family sucks and he had his problems at home, he find a home with Erwin and his family. Their story is very interesting, and I'll do a separate post at some point to explain it and give it justice. But basically, the song just makes me think of the progression of their bond and brotherhood.
This is long already so there will need to be other parts, but as always, THANK YOU FOR READING <3 (if you did. if not I don't blame you because i'm just yapping). You're reward for making it to the end is an absolutely adorable baby levi.

I was listening to the guitar riff on an ABBA song and I thought of rockstar Eren learning how to play guitar to impress Mikasa when they were teenagers!!
LOVE IT, THIS IS THE SOLE REASON HE BECAME A ROCK STAR!! Mikasa has no idea she's the literal reason he is where he is, I love him.

Eurovision 2004 - Wrap Up
It's time to wave a fond farewell to Istanbul. 2004 has been the year of expansion - the year Eurovision got too big for a single show on a Saturday night. The girl bop domination continued, but the Balkan ballad also entered the spotlight. It's the year of debuts and new national finals.
Despite the expansion, in many respects 2004 is a year of consolidation and settling after several years of change, upheaval and scandal. The voting system has achieved the EBU's desired final form of 100% televote at last. The was some oddness, but that was largely confined to unexpected ABBA puppets and the sudden warm feeling between formally antagonistic neighbours in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The string of first time winners continued, this time with Ukraine with their second ever attempt. The vibes at the end were almost universally good ones.
The biggest set of innovations were happening outside of Eurovision itself. Now that there were more countries, there were many more national finals. There were severnal new ones, venerable competitions like Festivali i Këngës now serving an additional purpose, and other countries went for complete reinventions.
Some existing competitions seemed to get even bigger and grander. In Germany, Belgium and Poland there was expansion not only in the number of acts but in the quality and the recognisability of the competitors. This was the year that both Željko and Toše first shone outside of Balkans, where they were household names, and reached a much wider audience.
Metas were emerging. Not only the girl bop, but there was an increase in the amount of disco as well as the emerging new trend of rock. Ranging from glam metal schlager to serious brooding as well as indie anthems, national broadcasters seemed to want to make a point that there were multiple different genres that could be selected. Eurovision could be more broadly representative of popular music. New formats were tried - the age of the super-final was ushered in with several competitions trying it out.
For the songs that made it to the Eurovision stage, it was another good year. Matching 2003 in the number of songs that make it into the songfestival.be annual chart - there are six in the latest top 500. There was very little in the way of controversy and booing compared to the previous year. TRT became the first broadcaster to have to organise two shows and even more rehearsals. There were a few wrinkles to iron out of course, but when the biggest visible hitch is Sertab Erener's heel briefly getting caught in the grill surrounding the stage, you know it's been a competent production. I still miss the reverse recap though!
Bye bye 2004 - it's been great. Let's see what Kyiv can do in 2005. There's revolution in the air.

assistant mikasa is such an abba-fan coded. she’s the type to read her novels in the office while playing voulez-vous in her headphones
THE SOUND I MADE. SHE REALLY IS JUST LIKE ME FR. but yes eren never calls her because he thinks it's both so cute and so funny.

Ohh no and yeah there’s nothing to do till the next term ig next year elections will be held in my country to elect the prime minister and it’s the first time I’ll be voting so I’m sorta looking forward to that . Andd same really proud of him and when he said estie bestie is on the podium baby that was so so cute haha💖🤍
Thanksss bestie 💖 and so true each one is amazing!! Yess in the credits it said that new lyrics written by lin! Haha that was my mum she was sick of me playing frozen songs all the time but I think they eventually did grow on her 😂 alsoo you’re going for Hamilton right (that’s so cool , I love that musical !) soo which are some of your favourite songs from it ? Alsoo bestie which are some of your most listened to music artists basically your favourite singers ?
-💖
oh voting for the first time must be so exciting for you bestie, i'm so happy for you!💜🫶 i love that he loves that nickname as much as we do, he really is the cutest😭
idk i'm glad my sister outgrew her frozen stage because i will forever be traumatized😭 i was the same with hamilton but now she's also obsessed with it so we just have fun??😂 my fav song is wait for it because it's the older sister anthem 🤭 but i also love guns and ships solely because of the fact that it's the fastest song on broadway🫶🫶 (and daveed diggs rocks) which ones are your favourite??
my fav artist is taylor ofc, but apart from her i listen to a lot of old stuff from the 70's like elton john, abba and cher, and of course i love turkish legends like tarkan and sertab erener🫶 who are you favourite artists???🤭💜
