Eremin Week 2021 day 6: Childhood
Their wedding was going perfect. Was. The whole day was going perfect until someone decided to bring up the fact that this was technically their second wedding.
AU where Eren and Armin got married twice.
Short story under read more!
“You both were so young,” Eren’s mother sighed happily into her fifth glass of wine. “You had only learnt was a wedding was, and you immediately chose each other.”
Armin watched as his now husband’s cheeks turned pink, matching his own on the tips of his ears.
“Mum!” Eren whisper screamed, but the table laughed along in lighthearted jest.
“Who proposed first?” Connie asked, grinning his trademark mischievous smile.
“Armin did.”
“I did?” Armin gasped.
The rest of the table yelled, “He did?!” at the same time.
Carla nodded, then looked over to Armin’s grandfather, who was also chuckling to himself. His eyes sparkled as he lifted his cup in a half-toast to Carla.
“Oh no,” Armin muttered as he shuffled into his chair a little. His grandfather knows too many embarrassing stories. Add some alcohol and it’s all over.
“He did,” His grandfather spoke like it was just yesterday. “He asked me how to make a ring, so a made one out of flowers that grew outside our house.”
He grabbed one of the flowers from the vase in the middle of the table, nodding slightly to Eren and Armin in apology and thankfulness for letting him use the decoration. Old hands worked the stem like it was child’s play.
“That’s how I learnt it?” Armin asked in awe as his grandfather slipped the flower ring on his pinky. The blond watched as he plucked a flower decoration again, and began to make another. “I thought it was from a book I couldn’t remember!”
The elder man chuckled to himself, deep and hearty. “No, my boy. You learnt it from me. Then you spent hours making the perfect flower ring.”
Armin hid behind his hands as the table gave lighthearted laughter with some ‘aww’s’ in there. He couldn’t remember any of this, but it must’ve been true. It made so much sense.
“And then the next day, Eren was dragging poor Armin by the hand and asking me to make them married right after the proposal,” Carla smiled with those words. “But, of course, you just couldn’t accept it if it was just us, so you made me invite everyone over.”
Armin’s grandfather smiled, wide and toothy, at the memory. “That day the weather was beautiful. Sunshine and a cool breeze. Everyone brought whatever food they could to your wedding since you both insisted on getting married immediately.”
“One of the best lunches we’ve ever had.” Carla added, eyes twinkling.
Mikasa straightened up, and Armin saw a flash of recognition in her eyes. “I remember,” She spoke softly, but managed to grab everyone’s attention. “You bought fought over whether I’d be the bridesmaid or the best man.”
The table howled with laughter as Eren and Armin fell into their hands. Oh my god, embarrassing. This was almost getting too much.
Connie and Sasha were having the time of their lives, picking on and teasing the newly weds with their own additions to their childhood marriage.
Armin felt Eren’s hand over his, bringing them down from his face. Afraid to face the table with his definitely blushing face, he just looked to his husband beside him who was squeezing his hand and rubbing his thumb over the palm.
None of them noticed the table quieting down, enamored with the couple’s complete love and adoration for each other.
“You know,” Carla spoke softer now, nostalgia dripping in her voice. “Even if you two forgot, we didn’t.”
Armin’s grandfather slipped the flower ring off his pinky, and took the both of the new flower rings in his hand. “It might have been a surprise back then, but this time we expected it.”
The wedding pair watched as Armin’s grandfather got up and walked towards them. Their hearts soared as he dropped the two beautiful flower rings on the top of their entertwined hands.
Carla got up too, and kissed the top of their heads before hugging them so close. They’d never say it, but they could feel her hands shaking. Perhaps with pride, or maybe happiness.
The rest of the table, their closest friends, their family, just watched in silence.
“Congratulations Armin and Eren, my two closest friends in the world!” Mikasa spoke out, voice loud and cheery, something so rare and special.
Armin’s head poked out of the hug Carla was still giving, and watched as Mikasa stood up, holding her glass high and proud towards him- towards them.
The entire room cheered, repeating the words. Shouts and screams and happy cries grew in volume.
And for one single moment, an image flashed in Armin’s mind. One with Eren by his side, flower rings on their hands, and their entire family cheering the exact same way on a lovely and warm Spring noon.

Eremin Week 2021 || Day 6 Childhood
@onlyerearu
The ocean really was quite a lovely place to hang out. Armin was quietly floating in the ocean, facing the blue sky above him. The boy loved the beach, but really he preffered the water to the irritating gritty sand that he usually played on. This was the life.
Suddenly, he felt something tug his foot and he damn near screamed as he managed to force himself up while kicking, looking desperately looking around to see what had tried to grab him.
After a few moments, he heard a break in the water and some heavy breathing. That breathing soon became quite recognizable laugher. Armin felt his cheeks flush with rage.
"EREN!" He yelled turning to the laughing boy. It was not funny, but the brunette was laughing anyways. He was not pleased.
"Whatcha gonna do about it Armin?" Eren teased him and started to go back a little. The smirk on his face needed to be whiped off.
Armin approached. That is when Eren started laughing as he splashed Armin, initially Armin was frustrated. However, soon he joined in and it was a splash fight with both boys laughing.
It wound up being a rather pleasant day.

My first drawing on Clip Studio Paint, still figuring out the colors. I hear it’s almost Eremin week or it is? Anyway, I love these two and I was imagining Armin was a Marine Biologist at an Aquarium in a Modern AU. If I get around to it, I’ll do a Sasha and Connie drawing of them working at a movie theater (eating all of the snacks of course).

Meduza's The Beet: Fight or flight: Russia’s HIV patients fear mobilization
Hello, and welcome back to The Beet!
I’m Eilish Hart, the editor of this weekly email dispatch from Meduza that brings you original reporting and in-depth analysis on developments across Eurasia. To all of our new subscribers — thanks for joining us! If you missed last week’s issue about Belarus’s deteriorating sovereignty, it’s now available on Meduza’s website. If you’re not a subscriber, why not change that? Sign up here.
Russia’s chaotic mobilization has been grabbing headlines for weeks. Announced by Vladimir Putin himself on September 21, the call-up officially brought in 318,000 new recruits by the beginning of November. According to Putin, the mobilization ended 10 days ago (just in time for Russia’s fall conscription drive), but its effects are far from over. Fearing the military’s dragnet, hundreds of thousands Russians have fled abroad, upping the pressure on nearby countries that have already absorbed tens of thousands of newcomers since February 24. Though some draft-age men who left Russia are now returning home, they are likely the exception to the rule, given the threat of prosecution for draft dodging and the fact that, according to legal experts, the mobilization is technically still in effect.
Meanwhile, reports of the Russian authorities’ negligence abound: men who should have been exempt from service were swept up in the draft, dozens of conscripts have died without ever being deployed, and ill-prepared recruits are being slaughtered in Ukraine. In this context, potential draftees have faced a choice between fighting — on the frontlines or with Russia’s military bureaucracy — or fleeing abroad. For those with serious health conditions, this decision is especially fraught. For The Beet, journalist Sergey Faldin reports on how Russians living with HIV have navigated the risks of mobilization and emigration.
Some of the names in this story have been changed or omitted for safety reasons.
Fight or flight: Russia’s HIV patients fear mobilization
By Sergey Faldin
A week into Russia’s “partial” mobilization, the country’s leading human rights lawyer, Pavel Chikov, shared the following messages from his Telegram subscribers:
“Sverdlovsk region. My brother is 38. HIV+. The military officer simply said, ‘Do you give a damn where you die?’”
“Moscow. They’re taking my friend, 30 years old, who has HIV. He brought documents, but the enlistment office doesn’t care.”
“St. Petersburg. I have [late-stage] HIV. The enlistment officer insulted me and did not even look at my medical history.”
Officially, most Russians with HIV/AIDS are medically exempt from military service. But this doesn’t happen automatically. It requires undergoing a battery of medical tests and obtaining paperwork confirming your diagnosis.
Tumblr media

“Before the war, people who declared their HIV-positive status to the military enlistment office didn’t have any problems receiving a category D military certificate [‘unfit for service’],” said Anton Eremin, a Russian infectious disease doctor who fled to Paris after the February invasion. “If the enlistment office knew about your status, you weren’t subject to conscription — end of the story.”
But what happens to people who fail to report their HIV status to the enlistment office? And what about those who lack official paperwork or don’t even know they have the virus? Anton urged such people to leave Russia immediately. “For the enlistment office, if it’s not in the documents — it doesn’t exist,” he said.
‘Nobody cared that I have HIV’
Russia ranks among the countries with the most people living with HIV. According to official statistics, the number of registered HIV cases in Russia surpassed 1.1 million in 2021.
“The situation was already difficult before the war,” a thirty-something HIV activist from Moscow told The Beet. “Treatment was available only in big cities. As preventive measures, AIDS centers advised matrimonial sex. So-called HIV ‘experts’ still deny basic WHO [World Health Organization] principles, like U = U [short for undetectable equals untransmittable].”
Over the past five years, Russia has officially recorded between 85,000 and 100,000 new HIV infections annually. Most likely, the actual number of infections is substantially higher. “The number of people living with HIV is growing all the time, yet the budget for treatment remains almost unchanged,” a Russia-based volunteer from Life4Me+, a non-profit working to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis, told The Beet.
Today, however, Russian HIV patients face a new challenge. Against the backdrop of the war and, more recently, the mobilization, many are afraid to leave Russia because they don’t know whether they’ll be able to access treatment in other countries.
Kolya, a 29-year-old taxi driver in Moscow with early-stage HIV, told The Beet that he feels stuck in Russia because of a lack of knowledge about whether treatment will be readily available abroad. (Meanwhile, HIV/AIDS patients are reporting shortages of crucial antiretroviral medications across Russia.)
Andrey from Moscow, 33, didn’t receive a summons but decided to report to the enlistment office anyway. Andrey’s medical records were outdated and he knew that he could be drafted at any moment if he didn’t take action. “They put me in a room with other conscripts and started talking about the money our families would receive … nobody cared that I didn’t receive a summons or that I have HIV.” After rounds of negotiations with nurses, he was released after being told to secure the paperwork confirming his HIV status.
For now, at least, people with HIV can rest assured that the law is on their side — as long as they have documents to prove their diagnosis. Amid the mobilization, this has led to a surge on the black market for falsified medical records, with forged HIV certificates selling for anywhere from $190 to $880, Novaya Gazeta Europe reported.
“I heard about people who are attempting to infect themselves with HIV so as not to go to war, but that’s ridiculous,” said Olga, an HIV activist from St. Petersburg. “You can’t just contract a virus in a day.” (Accurate testing for HIV antibodies is typically only possible weeks, if not months, after exposure.)
Still, in a country where laws can be rewritten on a whim, putting your trust in the system could cost you everything. “If you have the option to leave, I recommend leaving,” says Roman Polyakov, an HIV-positive Russian journalist based in Spain. “Even if you have all the proper documents, I wouldn’t place any hopes in the crooked Russian legal system.”
‘It’s a great privilege to be able to leave.’
Maksim Malyshev, 45, was diagnosed with HIV in 1997 after extensive drug use. Back then, antiretroviral therapy (ART) — used to treat HIV — wasn’t available in Russia. “It used to be a terrifying diagnosis,” he told The Beet. “In the EU and U.S., people were only starting to talk about possible treatments. In Russia, there was nothing. My only dream then was to live to see the new millennium. It’s a miracle that I’m still alive.”
Along with the advent of HIV/AIDS treatment in Russia came stigmatization, Maksim recalled: “Each [government-run] AIDS center had a committee that decided who’d get therapy. If you had to choose between Maksim Malyshev, a drug addict, and a pregnant woman, the choice was not in my favor.” Such drastic measures resulted from a funding deficit and a spike in cases across the country.
Today, Maksim works for the Andrey Rylkov Foundation, an NGO helping drug users and HIV patients in Russia. He decided to leave for Georgia in March with his wife and daughter. He’s now running a mental health community center in Tbilisi.

“The availability of ART in Georgia wasn’t my top priority,” he said, reflecting on his decision to leave Russia. “I bought three-months worth of generic drugs. And I still had a two-month prescription issued at the AIDS center. This gave me a whole five months of treatment.”
Having worked with HIV patients since the early 2000s, Maksim had many contacts and knew he could continue his treatment in Georgia, Turkey, or Armenia if needed. “It’s a great privilege to be able to leave Russia. A lot of people don't have that option,” he explained. “I’m not a rich person, but I have accumulated social capital, which I can rely on.”
Still, HIV treatment in Georgia is not automatically available for newcomers — even for someone with such an extensive network. To receive treatment, Maksim must apply for a residence permit or seek help from local NGOs. “But I don’t want to use that resource,” he said. “There are people who need it more than I do.”
‘I’m afraid I’ll be stoned.’
Georgia recorded its first HIV infection in 1989, and the number of cases grew throughout the 1990s and 2000s. “Labor migrants mostly brought it to Georgia from Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe,” explained Nikoloz Chkhartishvili, the deputy director of the National AIDS and Immunology Center in Tbilisi. At the time, most cases were associated with intravenous drug use.
Nikoloz recalled that the Georgian government implemented intervention programs after independence to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and received support from the WHO’s Global Fund starting in 2004. In 2018, Georgia transitioned to domestic funding and committed itself to making treatment available to everyone.
“[Today], there are some 8,000 HIV patients in the country in total, and 83 percent are known positives,” said Nikoloz. By comparison, there are upwards of 32,000 HIV-related deaths in Russia annually.
According to Nikoloz, his AIDS center has only received 50 requests from Russians with HIV since March. “In Georgia, citizens and residents can get free care, which includes ART drugs, clinical consultations, and lab tests. But that’s not the case for Russians coming to Georgia,” he told The Beet. “They can also get access to treatment, but it will cost them money.”
“Russians who come to Tbilisi have money, so it’s easier for them to get access to therapy: they can either buy generic drugs in pharmacies or order packages by mail directly from Russia,” he added.
Asked whether this year’s influx of Russians and Ukrainians would affect Georgia’s healthcare system, Nikoloz seemed worried. “There are no HIV screening programs for newcomers. People just come here, and that’s it,” he said.

“The real problem is lack of diagnostics,” added Zhenya Zhukov, the founder of Emigration For Action, an NGO Russian emigres founded in Tbilisi to help Ukrainian refugees. “In Russia, many people don’t know they have the virus and need treatment.”
According to Nikolai Levshitz, who runs a popular informational Telegram channel for Russians in Georgia, anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes remain a significant barrier to accessing HIV services, including in healthcare settings. “There are strong homophobic sentiments in [Georgian] society,” he said.
For many in Georgia, the events of July 2021 are still fresh: far-right protesters attacked the headquarters of LGBTQ+ activists in Tbilisi, injuring more than 50 journalists and forcing the cancellation of a planned Pride march. One cameraman who was severely injured died, days later.
“I’m afraid, if I ask where the AIDS center is, I’ll be stoned,” said one of the interviewees in a study conducted by the Tbilisi-based Equality Movement on access to HIV/AIDS services for transgender people and immigrants in Georgia.
The language barrier has proven to be a challenge, as well. “We had several patients who needed HIV treatment,” Zhenya recalled. “We couldn’t find any local AIDS centers because most have websites written in Georgian. When I called the Healthcare Ministry and asked if they speak English, they said, ‘No!’ and hung up.”
* * *
Speaking at a press conference on October 31, Vladimir Putin said that Russia’s mobilization has ended, but he has yet to issue a corresponding decree. Chikov, the rights lawyer, said an official “demobilization” order probably isn’t in the cards.
“This regime is full of people without a drop of truth, logic, or consistency,” Maksim said when asked about the draft’s purported end. “I think it’s a PR move.”
Thanks for reading and see you next week!

Eremin week 2021 day 2: Deja vu
(This was the hardest one for me to think of something for tbh) AU where Eren and Armin bump into each other, and when Armin sees Eren as he apologises, he knows this has happened before, somewhere, somehow.
Short story under read below!
“I,” Armin thinks to himself with full confidence and smile. “Am completely lost.”
If Armin was a first year at uni, this would be completely fine, but with the renovations done on half of the campus, even a third year like Armin had to struggle a bit.
First week of uni is the most chaotic. People milling all around, running, fighting, playing, enjoying the experience while blissfully ignoring the fact that in a blink of an eye it’ll be exam season.
Armin stopped and looked around to try and get his bearings. Eyes searching for signs to the room he was meant to be in 10 minutes ago. Thankfully it was just a lecture with a professor he had last semester. Professor Smith was kind and understanding, but he wouldn’t allow tardiness longer than 15 minutes.
He scrambled through his bag, trying and find the campus map people had handed out when he walked in. Bunches of loose leaf paper and unorganised pens, some he didn’t even know would work, reminded him he’d become a true uni student.
Just when he thought he’d found what he was looking for, someone bumped into him. Hard.
Armin staggered slightly, some papers flying out of his bag as he tried to catch his balance.
“I am so sorry!”
The blonde looked up and saw the guy who bumped into him, sweating slightly and panting. Despite this, he had a playful smile on his face.
Armin watched as the guy took a second to catch his breath, and look over his shoulder. “It’s fine,” Armin replied, stuffing the loose leaf papers back in his bag, leaving them crumpled and poking out. “Are you okay?”
The man waved his hand and shrugged. “I’m fine. Sorry again.” And he started walking away.
Armin looked at the floor quickly to check there were no stray papers littered around. He took one more glance to the guy, and that’s when it happened.
A swirling feeling settled just below his ribcage, and uneasiness mixed with curiosity bubbling as it grew. It felt like he forgot something while remembering it at the same time. The man walking away, brown hair tied back, backpack hanging off one shoulder, was someone he knew... He thinks.
Must’ve met each other in some sort of dream his subconscious hid from him until this moment, or maybe they’ve come across each other before. It wouldn’t be surprising, but this familiarity felt foreign. Different.
Before he knew it, Armin’s feet guided him right back to him. He grabbed onto the guy, maybe a little firmer than he intended, but he didn’t let go.
“We’ve met before,” Armin starts, eyes searching for an answer. “Haven’t we?”
The man just stares back, mouth open in surprise, but he doesn’t fight back. They stay there for a bit, in the middle of the walking space, staring at each other.
Then the brunette laughs softly, and smirks. “I didn’t think you’d be the kind to use those kinds of pick-up lines.”
The feeling of deja vu immediately leaves Armin’s body, replaced by embarrassment as he feels his ears and the back of his neck heat up. His blue eyes look at anywhere else but the guy’s face.
“That’s-!” Armin squeaks, his voice cracking. “That’s not what- I was just-”
The guy puts his hand over Armin’s, gently tugging on it for him to let go of his arm. Once Armin realises, he quickly retracts his hand and holds it to his chest. “I’m so sorry,” He mutters.
Armin was able to take once step backwards before the guy reached over and plucked a piece of paper from his bag. The brunette scribbles something on it, and then tucks it back.
“I’m Eren, by the way,” The man says with a pen cap still in his mouth.
“Armin.”
“Nice to meet you, Armin.” Eren puts out a hand, and Armin tentatively shakes it.
Armin finally looks up to meet his face, and is swept by the soft careful smile Eren gives. It’s like a secret.
“OI EREN, YOU PIECE OF SHIT, COME BACK HERE!” Another voice rings through the space, and suddenly Armin remembers it isn’t just the two of them here. Through the sides of his vision, he sees other students look up to the noise.
“Gotta go,” Eren says as he looks behind Armin, face slightly paling.
The blonde watches as Eren breaks into a sprint, weaving and working his way through the crowd as two people, a guy with blonde hair and an undercut and a girl with holding a sandwich in both hands, follow him.
It takes a few seconds after they disappear from both his hearing and eyesight before he checks the time again. 14 minutes after he was meant to be in class.
With fervor, he quickly gets out the campus map, settled at the top of his bag. As he opens it, he sees a number and a smiley face next to it.
Armin smiles to himself, and looks up thanking whatever gods there were up there. Then his eyes narrow as he focuses on the sign with the room number he was looking for this whole time.
Swiftly, he turns his head to the door next to him, and sighs in exasperation.
The room was right there this whole time.
Additional notes: He was a minute late.

Eremin Week 2021 || Day 3 Goodbye
"How long did you say this conference was going to be Armin?" Eren looked tired, but then again it was hard not to. He was up driving Armin to the airport at 3:30 am to be sure he got his 4:15 am flight out to New York for his Marine Biologist conference. Their son Theodore (Theo for short) was asleep in the back of the car. Eren hadn't really had any desire to call a babysitter so late, so he just carried the sleeping boy out here to the car. It had seemed more logical to bring the kid with him anyways and not have him freak out if he woke up and his dads where gone.
"One week. Don't worry Mikasa said she would pick me up when I get back, and I am calling a cab when I land in New York, I won't really use a rental car at all while I am there. The convention is after all in the hotel I am staying at." Armin tried to reassure Eren. Of course that was easier said then done when Armin would be halfway across the country for a week and wouldn't be landing until after Midnight the day he came back.
"Don't worry is easy for you to say Armin. Even if you stay at the hotel most of the time, New York is a dangerous place. Just...please be careful. I want you home safe and sound, in my arms in a week okay?" Eren still felt nervous as he fast approached the airport.
"I will be, I promise. We both know this is part of my job as a University Professor to go to these things, even if I didn't want too." Of course Armin did. Research and information would be shared there, he had to share his and get some in return.
Eren sighed. "I know, and you have been talking about this non-stop....just please be careful, and hurry back when you are done." Eren offered a smile as he pulled into the airport drop off area.
"I will." Armin promised. He leaned over and kissed Eren, a kiss Eren gladly returned.
"Goodbye for now." Armkn waved and got out of the car, quickly getting his luggage from the car, kissing Theo on his forehead, and running in.
"Goodbye for now Armin...." Eren started to pull out when he heard a very tired sounding voice from the back.
"Baba....where is dad?" Through the rear view mirror he could see Theo rubbing his eyes. The boy must have been awakened when Eren started driving again.
"He had to get on his plane for his conference. Don't worry, he will be back next week. He kissed you goodbye before he had to go." He promised the boy.
"Oh...okay...can I sleep with you when we get home." The boy croaked.
Eren could understand, being waken up this early probably had the boy feeling like garbage. "Of course you can." He promised as they once again hit the freeway.
