📖 Synopsis

Dreams of lavender pillows and stained glass chickens

Merridy is a thief, finding herself in the dungeon after a burglary gone wrong. Locked cells cannot hold her, but the severely injured prisoner between her and her secret way out is a different story. Faced with the decision of having to either kill him or take him along, she doesn’t have to think twice. 

Accused of high treason and tortured within an inch of his life, Damien knows he will die; the only question is whether the executioner or the infection will get him first. When a woman passes through his cell and insists on helping him escape, he is convinced it will only delay the inevitable. 

But Merridy refuses to give up on him, hiding him from the guards and helping him recover. As they slowly get to know each other, they find they have more in common than they thought—perhaps enough to turn their forced companionship into true friendship.

This one's a bit different than my other WIP. For a year, I have been posting Glass Shards as I wrote it. Chapter 50 has dropped on May 10th, exactly one year after I started.

I will, eventually, edit it properly and put it into a book-appropriate form (ebook/pdf). Since I wrote Merridy's backstory in Nuisance, a few minor details will need to be adjusted along the way as well. But, as far as the story goes, it is complete.

Chronological order of the stories following the life of Merry and Damien:

Nuisance > Undeserved > Glass Shards > Fancy Boots.

All of those are very dear to me, but Glass Shards is the edited translation of the story that started it all; the ace love story I wanted, but couldn't find, so I made it myself.

"I began to dawdle over breakfast during shift changes, asking both waitresses questions. After weeks of inquiries, they invited me to a demonstration, outside Kleinhan's Music Hall, protesting the Israeli war against Egypt and Syria. I was particularly interested in that protest. The state of Israel had been declared shortly before my birth. In Hebrew school I was taught "Palestine was a land without peo-ple, for a people without a land." That phrase haunted me as a child. I pictured ears with no one in them, and movies projected on screens in empty theaters. When I checked a map of that region of the Middle East in my school geography textbook, it was labeled Palestine, not Israel. Yet when I asked my grandmother who the Palestinians were, she told me there were no such people. The puzzle had been solved for me in my adolescence. I developed a strong friendship with a Lebanese teenager, who explained to me that the Palestinian people had been driven off their land by Zionist settlers, like the Native peoples in the United States. I studied and thought a great deal about all she told me. From that point on I staunchly opposed Zionist ideology and the occupation of Palestine. So I wanted to go to the protest. However, I feared the demonstration, no matter how justified, would be tainted by anti-Semitism. But I was so angered by the actions of the Israeli government and military, that I went to the event to check it out for myself. That evening, I arrived at Kleinhan's before the protest began. Cops in uniforms and plainclothes surrounded the music hall. I waited impatiently for the protesters to arrive. Suddenly, all the media swarmed down the street. I ran after them. Coming over the hill was a long column of people moving toward Kleinhan's. The woman who led the march and spoke to reporters proudly told them she was Jewish! Others held signs and banners aloft that read: "Arab Land for Arab People!" and "Smash Anti-Semitism!" Now those were two slogans I could get behind! I wanted to know who these people were and where they had been all my life! Hours later I followed the group back to their headquarters. Orange banners tacked up on the walls expressed solidarity with the Attica prisoners and the Vietnamese. One banner particularly haunted me. It read: Stop the War Against Black America, which made me realize that it wasn't just distant wars that needed opposing. Yet although I worked with two members of this organization, I felt nervous that night. These people were communists, Marxists! Yet I found it easy to get into discussions with them. Well, I've finished edits and rewrites on The Royals And The Ramblers, and this morning I completed the typesetting and sent it off to Lulu to get a proof copy printed. They're estimating 2-4 weeks turnaround (usually it's closer to 10 days) so they must still be struggling with staff or supply-chain issues. Still, it's out of my hands now, and I can't even work on the ePub or PDF editions until I get it back, because there will be last-minute proof/typo fixes to the manuscript first. But the wheels are turning! As soon as I have an idea of a release date I'll post it up.

The cover isn't perfect yet (I've already realized I need to move the title block up and maybe shrink the emojis) but I want to see how it looks in physical form, and I'm more or less pleased with the layout. I might mess with the font, but it's the same font and style (with the italic "and") that I used for Fete For A King, which is a callback probably only I care about :D

I might start doing something new with the cover designs after this edition -- the idea has always been an abstract background with theme-appropriate emojis, just because that's a) easy to do and b) kinda fun. But given this is a bit of a watershed in the series, it might be time to transition to using more imagery (art, photos) for newer books.

Out-of-Fandom Longfic Recs

Looking for something good that you can sink your teeth into? Not necessarily LoZ? I can recommend some masterpieces and favorites. :) all these are complete!

Harry Potter and the Problem of Potions by Wyste. 180k. Yes yes HP I know. It was still a formative part of my adolescence and this is just fanfiction. Very satisfying fanfiction, in which Harry becomes a real character who desperately wants to be a potion master despite Snape's every attempt to dissuade him. Lots of fun.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by LessWrong. 661k. Longest thing on this list but HOO BOY is it worth it. Written by a guy to teach people about... well. Methods of rationality. Applies the scientific method to the HP-verse, makes Voldemort actually smart, and is a lot of fun the whole way through. You can read on FFN or by downloading an epub or PDF. At least try the first chapter I am BEGGING YOU.

The Dragon-King's Temple by Kryal. Avatar: the Last Airbender (show) & Stargate SG-1, 200k. I knew nothing about SG-1 going in, had only seen the movie, and really enjoyed this. Once again, the worldbuilding and the mystery are very very good. Like legitimately. Zuko & Toph focus!

Thrower of the Dart by Vathara. Avengers & Artemis Fowl (books) crossover, 100k. Picks up after the first Avengers movie and AF book 5 (the demon one.) Very nice plot, good character interactions, fun worldbuilding, mostly in the AF side.

let the shadows fall behind you by Sweetbriar15. Disney's Descendants (just the first one), 155k. Did you ever feel like the movie was a bit of a waste of a good story premise? This will help. Picks up after modifying the end of the first movie, introduces a lot of awesome character and worldbuilding information. Mal-focused, but not too heavily.

Phantom of Truth by Haiju. Danny Phantom, 58k. DP is full of whump fics, and this is probably one of the very best. Its sequel, Shadow of a Doubt, has stopped updating on AO3, but it should still be on FFN. SoaD is, iirc, 100k+, and quite good, dealing with the aftermath of the first.

Bandits and Bravery by LettdViolet. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, 28k. Linhardt/M!Byleth, modern college AU, the events of the game are played out by a group playing knockoff D&D. Themes of grief and mourning a parent's death, and finding comfort. Linhardt is like a sleepy version of Vio without as much evil. Shortest on this list but I LIKE IT OKAY

Carpetbaggers by cofax. Chronicles of Narnia, 120k. Fills in some of the time post-LWW with adventures and working on gaining trust. Feels a lot like a continuation of the book, though without the heavy-handed allegory.
