“The Girl Who Cried Fox” is some pretty stereotypical harem smut, complete with an indecisive milquetoast lead who’s in high school but drawn like he’s 8 and a main girl who has spent every moment of screen time in the first two episodes attempting to sex him up.
Given how passive and, frankly, willing he is, I personally find his declaration in the second episode that he’s about to lose his virginity less believable than all the stuff about animal spirits, possession, school-exploding fireballs, wards, and crowds of ladies attracted to nothingburger men. We saw her get him alone at the end of episode 1. How could he possibly be a virgin in episode 2?
Because it includes a sexy fox spirit lady I really wanted to like this series, and episode 1 seemed like I really might be able to.
See, episode 1 has this narrative structure where the plotline is shaped like a spiral. And to me this genuinely does make up for the fact that all the narrative elements on that plotline are pretty bog-standard for the genre, and that the genre’s inherently problematic. I think even if every episode had used the same trick, having the plot spiral back and forward toward a central point that epitomizes the episode...That would have been sufficiently stylish to carry it. Episode 1 of this series has a weird style, but it has a lot of style, and I rather like it.
And then Episode 2 comes along and is utterly normal in its delivery and all the other elements being bland and/or problematic is suddenly a lot less forgivable.
I’ll go another few in, but I’m not sure I’ll finish the series.
