episode five: trick-or-treat - aran ojiro
kai's halloween '24 miniseries - a halloween to remember!!
CONTENT WARNINGS: aran is chocolate man to a bunch of eight-year-olds
EPISODE RUNTIME: 673 words || previous (episode four)
moodboard
“honey?”
“yeah?”
“why are there kids at our front door?”
aran steps away from the popcorn on the stove and joins you at the peephole. sure enough, half a dozen little boys and girls giggle and shove each other around on your front porch. through the frosted glass of the door, he sees a vampire girl climb onto a zombie boy's shoulders. the human tower wobbles dangerously as she reaches for the doorbell-
“gosh,” he hears you mutter as you unlock and open the door quickly, and your hands dart out just in time to save the girl from falling.
he scratches his head, letting out a sigh. it was supposed to be a quiet night for just the two of you, watching scary movies while eating popcorn, but it seems that now you'll have to deal with these kids.
“i like your decorations,” one of the kids pipes up. “do you have candy?”
“sorry, kid,” he says apologetically. “we're not really doin’ this whole givin’-out-candy thing-”
“but your porch light's on, and everybody knows that if a house's porch light is on, they'll have candy for you!”
you glare at him. “did you forget to switch the porch light off?”
“...maybe?”
you let out a defeated sigh, then turn back to the kids, beaming. “wait here, i'll see if i can find some candy bars for you.”
they cheer as you disappear into the house, and aran is left staring at them. they stare back, their eyes unnervingly wide. he notices a couple of kids start exchanging curious glances, not-so
-subtly pointing at him and gaping.
“can i help you?” he says dryly.
they freeze in place, seemingly terrified.
realising that he must look like a scary, angry giant to these eight-year-olds, aran tries to relax his facial muscles. unfortunately for him, they seem to shrink away even further.
“i don't bite,” he reassures them rather unhelpfully.
a kid shuffles forward, stammering and stuttering. “uhm… are… are you the chocolate man?”
aran tries not to laugh. “am i the what?”
“my friend kaito said there was a chocolate man living on this street,” the boy says, gaining the confidence to speak. “he gave out loads of candy.”
“is kaito the one who licked my arm to see if i tasted like chocolate?” they nod bashfully and he laughs, remembering the all-too-harrowing moment exactly a year ago. “let it be known that i do not, so don't even think ‘bout pullin’ the same thing again.”
they giggle again, and he’s so distracted by their laughter that he doesn’t notice you creeping up on him-
“boo!”
“gah!”
“found some chocolates,” you proclaim, dropping a few into each of their candy buckets. you’re in the ghostbusters costume you wore last halloween, looking almost as excited as the kids. aran shakes his head, amused.
“alright, you little ghouls,” he says, trying to sound stern but failing miserably as a smile creeps across his face. “off you go before i have to start chargin’ rent for standing on my porch.”
the kids laugh, scattering down the steps and back onto the sidewalk, waving goodbye and shouting “thank you, ghostbuster-san!” and “happy halloween!” you and aran watch them disappear down the street, their voices fading into the night.
when the last of the laughter dies down, aran turns to you with a mock-stern look. “ya just couldn’t resist, huh?”
you shrug. “hey, it’s halloween. gotta live a little.”
“are ya implyin’ that i’m boring?”
“wouldn’t dream of it!”
he wraps an arm around you, pulling you close as you both head back inside. “alright, popcorn’s still warm, movie’s ready, porch light’s off. no more interruptions, okay?”
you laugh, leaning your head against his shoulder. “no more interruptions,” you promise.
as you settle back into the couch with him, popcorn in hand and the movie starting, he catches a last glimpse out the window of the kids running down the street. maybe halloween isn’t just for the kids after all—maybe it’s for the kid in both of you too.

2 - 27 Your Days are Numbered
(damn I was proud of my last drawing T-T)
NAAAA I'M SO HAPPY GOAT LORD IS BACK >w<
I KNEAD HIM
youtube
Check out my gorgeous first youtube video!! (or don't lmao)
DON'T READ THE EPISODES WITHOUT READING THE BOOKS!!
Irratino takes Logico to what he wanted to show him, a new room in the Institute.
IRRATINO: Now around here, the one department you can really count on, is the numerology department. [whEEZE] HAHHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAA!
He faceplants. Logico walks right over him and sees a large amount of humans with calculators - what the hell are they doing?
LOGICO: What the hell are you doing? PERSON: Shh.
They multiply 367 by 673. It equals 246,991!
LOGICO: …
There’s an apple orchard on the lot outside, with people taking many notes on the many apples. And there’s a small room full of people counting in unison.
IRRATINO: Oh, they’re trying to find the highest number! LOGICO: I hate you. IRRATINO: Come on, I wanna show you the director! LOGICO: I’m pretty sure we’ve met.
They approach Night.
NIGHT: Ah, President. It’s good you came. The director is dead.
Luckily the director was just some human… Logico reunites with Azure, and is startled by the newcomer Supreme Master Cobalt!
LOGICO: How many people did you hire?? IRRATINO: When I was disguised as Mister Shadow, I picked up a few friends from New Aegis! [whispers] They didn’t know I was supposed to be dead!
Wanting to erase that memory, Logico immediately turns to take statements.
COBALT: Based on my visions- NIGHT: Based on the numbers- AZURE: Look at the stars! LOGICO: ENOUGHHHHH
That’s one thing Logico sure didn’t miss - character-relevant dialogue prefixes! But he does somewhat enjoy examining the absurd weapon selection. Azure is chewing on a raw steak.
LOGICO: Are you trying to kill yourself? AZURE: It’s not real, it’s genetically modified soy. If I tried to eat a real steak here, the inspector would kill me!
Logico glances over at Irratino, who laughs. Cobalt is playing around with a little angel doll.
COBALT: I’m not playing, and it’s not a doll. It’s a sculpture of the patron saint of math. LOGICO: It has a tag from a dollar store on it, and you were prancing around while singing. COBALT: [absolutely nightmarish scream]
Logico is blasted backwards and slams into Night, who is maneuvering a hypercube.
LOGICO: Um, what is that? NIGHT: A hypercube. LOGICO: No, what IS it. NIGHT: It’s a hypercube, Logico. I don’t know what you want me to say. IRRATINO: It’s amazing, right? That shouldn’t even be able to exist! LOGICO: … IRRATINO: I’ll cast some runes to solve the murder.
Logico looks at the runes.
LOGICO: Hm. Okay. It looks like the murderer is… Supreme- NIGHT: Me. I did it. LOGICO: Um, no, actually- NIGHT: It was me. It was all me. Take me away. Take me to prison, where I shall rot. LOGICO: Oh my god, you didn’t d- NIGHT: [clutches onto him] YOU WON’T TAKE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE AWAY FROM ME, NOT AGAIN, NOT EVER!!!!
Irratino is disturbed. He has never heard Night scream before! (No one has.)
COBALT: Love of your… what? NIGHT: I love you. COBALT: I’m hundreds of years old. NIGHT: Age is just a number. LOGICO: We may have to arrest you for different reasons. But ANYWAY, Cobalt is the ACTUAL murderer. COBALT: This is outrageous! Nobody should be able to invent new numbers except me. And I shouldn’t be held ac’count’able for stopping the count! Fortunately, my great mystic faculties will make me impossible to catch.
He tries running, but sprains his back and collapses immediately.
NIGHT: A new number… it’s sad we will never learn what it might have been. AZURE: Wait, look!
She brings a slip of paper from the dead guy’s pocket.
AZURE: [gasp!] A googol and twelve!
Night and Irratino crowd around in awe, and Logico couldn’t be more done with this bullshit. But would he rather be suffering in Drakonia?
The end!
As much as I adore writing angst, I dearly missed writing dumb episodes where nothing happens as well <3
Now I'm going to cry to myself because I'll never get to attend a live murdle.
The power of Goat Lord compels you!
See you next time murdlers!

Today's translation #673
Yuri!!! on Life official guidebook, Skating animation, Abiko Eiji x Tatenaka Junpei
Part 7.
-- What do you think the experience of working on this project gave you, Abiko-san?
Abiko: At first, I was working in pencil on paper, but later I myself made a request to be able to work digitally, and in the middle of working on animation of episode 1. I started using a tablet to work. At first, I was drawing on paper while looking at two screens - one with a CGI footage of the camerawork and one playing Miyamoto-sensei's choreography. But I couldn't draw directly what I saw on those screens, so there was often a slight shift there in animation [compared to the reference footage]. So I had a talk with [MAPPA's CEO at that time, and now the President of the Board of Directors, Maruyama Masao] about how maybe if I could draw directly on top of the reference footage, that would help to get rid of that shift. I meant it as a half-joke, but he agreed to that. And I've got the necessary equipment in no-time.
Tatenaka: That was a surprise to me.
Abiko: He's a very capable man, isn't he (laugh). I'd never worked using digital technique before, but I've learned quite a bit, as I was working - I think, I can make a good use of those skills in my future work, too.

Now he finds that events in his own past have been altered – and a lethal force from South America's prehistory has been released.

Propaganda
First story from Kate Orman! It’s weird, strange, and uniquely her! (@finalpam8000 )
Human Nature
Synopsis
"Who's going to save us this time?"
April, 1914. The inhabitants of the little Norfolk town of Farringham are enjoying an early summer, unaware that war is on the way. Amongst them is Dr John Smith, a short, middle-aged history teacher from Aberdeen. He's having a hard time with his new post as house master at Hulton College, a school dedicated to producing military officers.
Bernice Summerfield is enjoying her holiday in the town, getting over the terrible events that befell her in France. But then she meets a future Doctor, and things start to get dangerous very quickly. With the Doctor she knows gone, and only a suffragette and an elderly rake for company, can Benny fight off a vicious alien attack? And will Dr Smith be able to save the day?
Propaganda
the tv adaptation of this has tighter writing but the book has. idk a lot of stuff in it that's interesting that unfortunately didn't make it into the episodes. i think they should fight (October)
Lungbarrow
Synopsis
"Nonsense, child", retorted the Doctor. "Grandfather indeed! I've never seen you before in my life!"
All is not well on Gallifrey. Chris Cwej is having someone else's nightmares. Ace is talking to herself. So is K9. Leela has stumbled on a murderous family conspiracy. And the beleaguered Lady President, Romanadvoratrelundar, foresees one of the most tumultuous events in her planet's history.
At the root of all is an ancient and terrible place, the House of Lungbarrow in the southern mountains of Gallifrey. Something momentous is happening there. But the House has inexplicably gone missing.
673 years ago the Doctor left his family in that forgotten House. Abandoned, disgraced and resentful, they have waited. And now he's home at last.
In this, the Seventh Doctor's final New Adventure, he faces a threat that could uncover the greatest secret of them all.
Propaganda
cornerstone of weird doctor who lore and jokes about looms (anonymous)
Is it good? No. But damn if it doesn't cause some good fandom fights. #LoomRights (@eighthdoctor)

So he's certainly not impressed by the arrival of the man they're calling the most dangerous criminal in the quadrant. Or, as he prefers to be known, the Doctor.
What does impress the Governor is the way the new prisoner immediately sets about trying to escape. And keeps trying. Finally, he sends for the Doctor and asks him why? But the answer surprises even the Governor. And then there's the threat — unless the Governor listens to the Doctor, a lot of people will die.
Who is the Doctor and what's he really doing here? Why does he want to help the Governor? And who is the young woman who comes every day to visit him, only to be turned away by the guards?
When the killing finally starts, the Governor begins to get his answers...

"The death of billions is as nothing to us, Doctor, if it helps defeat the Daleks."
The Great Time War has raged for centuries, ravaging the universe. Scores of human colony planets are now overrun by Dalek occupation forces. A weary, angry Doctor leads a flotilla of Battle TARDISes against the Dalek stronghold but in the midst of the carnage, the Doctor's TARDIS crashes to a planet below: Moldox.
As the Doctor is trapped in an apocalyptic landscape, Dalek patrols roam amongst the wreckage, rounding up the remaining civilians. But why haven't the Daleks simply killed the humans?
Searching for answers the Doctor meets 'Cinder', a young Dalek hunter. Their struggles to discover the Dalek plan take them from the ruins of Moldox to the halls of Gallifrey, and set in motion a chain of events that will change everything. And everyone.

While their music owes debts to the towering giants of rock, soul and the Mexican and Brazilian music before them, no one sounds like Chicano Batman.
Formed in Los Angeles in 2008, the group released its self-titled debut two years later.
But it was 2020's Invisible People and its infectious lead track, "Color My Life" that cemented the group's place in the indie universe.
Released at the end of March, Notebook Fantasy sees the band continuing to grow, exploring new sounds while staying loyal to the elements that have helped the group stand out from the pack.

I had two messages come in about Gretna Green after I mentioned it in episode #671.
Shel O'Toole wrote: "Hi Marc, It was interesting to hear you refer to Gretna Green. My knowledge of it was as a place people eloped to. A quick search of Google confirmed my memories. It was interesting to discover Gretna is a town built during World War 1.
The village of Gretna Green is still thriving and it sounds like a great place to visit. It is certainly on my list of places to visit should I get to fulfill my dream of going to Scotland.
I discovered in the past couple of years my maternal grandmother’s family is from Ayrshire in Scotland. They came from a village called Coylton.
I look forward to hearing about your whiskey tour and seeing photos of Scotland.
I’m really enjoying today’s show #671
Thanks for all the great music Marc.
Sliãnte"
Wayne Myers wrote: "Hey Marc, I was listening to episode 671 while playing soccer today and heard you mention the Scottish village of Gretna Green. There is a fantasy author named Linzi Day who lives there and has her book series set there. I know she is amenable to answering questions, because she answered mine.
Her book series is The Midlife Recorder series, which starts with Midlife in Gretna Green. Love the show. Slainte."
Mary Lynn Deal sent a message on Patreon: "Hi Marc, I'm doing some 3d printing and office work at home while listening today. Still enjoying every minute. Have a wonderful day, Slainte,"
Rod Nevin commented on Patreon: "Lovely collection of music! By the way Marc, I have to tell you because I know you would want to know, the tune title for Arise & Go has “Strathspeys” and reels, and the correct pronunciation for strathspey is “strath’spay” … last syllable being what Bob Barker always reminded us to do our pets. 😎"
