Victoria once again complains about a tummy ache and Jack isn’t believing her for a second. Off to school with ya! Ben has arranged everything with the bikes to be rode on Andy’s field. Jack and Andy have more words where Andy puts his foot in it mentioning Victoria having been around his the other day. Jack is annoyed to have to fetch Victoria from school. Jack gets a complaint about noise at Andy’s place - the bikes. Robert is left to look after Victoria and to call Siobhan if need be. Jack blasts Andy about the bikes and a call from Robert is brushed off, focus solely on Andy.

Kingston Livingston III (named after his dad and his grandfather) is a young boy Muppet on Sesame Street who first appeared in Season 24, in episode 3103.

Kingston takes pride in doing his own thing instead of simply following the crowd. When his friends wear their baseball caps backwards, Kingston wears his to the front because he likes that better, and he loves dancing even when it's different than everyone else's. His friends, notably Loretta, don't mind if he's different, and think he's cool for it. He sits next to Roxie Marie in class, who befriended him and she showed him around the neighborhood.

For Season 26, when the show emphasized the importance of literacy, Kingston was the Muppet character who embodied this lesson. He often wrote short stories, and once reported for "The Wide World of Writing", travelling around the Street to see what writing could be used for.

Kingston was mostly active on the show until Season 29. However, two insert segments continued to air through Season 38: his biographical song "Just Happy to Be Me" (First: Episode 3178) and the birthday song "A Cat Had a Birthday." (First: Episode 3331)

Let’s Talk About Sex Baby, Let’s Talk About You and Me

          For this post I watched a few episodes of Dark and the second episode of Stranger Things to understand the differences in how Americans and Germans view sexual behavior. By watching these shows, it becomes clear that Germans see sexual behavior and nudity as more natural than their American counterparts.  

           Two episodes of Dark particularly stand out when examining the German approach to sex and the naked body: S1E1 and S1E9. In both of these episodes, the sex scenes start quite abruptly without much introduction and expose quite a lot of the characters’ bodies. For example, in episode one, Jonas’ mom is having sex with Ulrich and her breasts are exposed for most of the scene and the same happens in episode nine when Magnus has sex with Franziska. However, this openness to sex and the human body isn’t established in Stranger Things. In the second episode, Nancy is extremely bashful about taking her shirt off and it takes her a while to get physical with Steve. Even after all the build-up in the episode, the actual sexual relations aren’t shown.  

          This difference in cultural approaches to sex and nudity is best explained by the influence that religion has played in American life. The United States of America was settled by Puritans, an intense group of Protestants who had strict moral beliefs about pleasure and sex. They created strict laws that forbade all non-marital and non-reproductive sexual activities which included pre-marital and extra-marital sex, homosexual sex, oral sex, and even masturbation. Those that violated the law were punished by fines, whipping, public shaming, and even death. This installed a fear of sex in the colonists that has been carried on into the present day. For example, the first contraceptive ad above, which is from Germany, compares condoms to an apple and states that contraception is “for my health”. The second contraceptive ad, which is from America, has a naked man putting out a fire and the words “don’t be stupid” are printed clearly on the condom. These advertisements show a clear juxtaposition between Germany’s stance towards condom use, that it’s healthy and comparable to eating an apple a day, and the American use of fear tactics to reach those that are sexually active. 

          Germany, by comparison, has a much more open and accepting view of sex and nudity mainly because the country did not have as much of a religious influence as America did. The German passion for nudity started mainly because of health drives in which getting naked was seen as part of a route to fitness and sunbathing naked could cure TB and rheumatism (Kreuger 2015). The country even opened the first nude beach around the 1920′s at a time when the rest of the world was worrying about women showing their ankles. By showing that one’s naked body is a holistically natural thing, sex has become natural as well. This is why many Germans may be perplexed by Nancy’s bashfulness towards taking her shirt off and why Americans would be shocked to see the graphic sex scenes between Ulrich/Jonas’ mom and Magnus/Franziska. 

          Even though American culture is slowly becoming more open to nudity, it will take some time before nudity and sex are as natural to Americans as they are to Germans. Maybe, one day, America will be able to let go of its fear-based view of sex and free the nipple.
