Beautiful smell on the front verandah! It’s our Stanhopea (Stanhopea Tigrina) this is an orchid that’s native to Mexico. These epiphytic, but occasionally terrestrial orchids can be found in damp forests from Mexico to Trinidad to NW Argentina. They have a pseudobulb with one long elliptic leaf. Stanhopea has complex and really fragrant flowers that are spectacular and short-lived. The flowers come out of the bottom of the containers that they grow in, making them easy to grow in baskets that have enough open space for the flowers to push through. They are sometimes called upside-down orchids. The amazing thing about this is the enormous size of the unopened bud. It’s as big as a small mango. #fragrant #Orchid #StanhopeaTigrina #foliage #UpsideDownOrchid #dappled #Mexico #CentralAmerica #epiphite #abcmygarden #easycare #hardy (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmyE3mPPeaK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

so from the hour or so of research i have a hard time concluding exactly what cactus the reglei grandiflora might be now classified as, only that it is probably a subspecies of the modern selenicereus grandiflorus. it’s possibly the hondurensis, considering the size of the flower and the brief description given compared to the one from 1899 that lists the “reglei” flower. but the journal describes the flower as being 18 inches in diameter (45 cm) while the hondurensis only goes to about 30-35 cm but seems to most closely match the description:
Grandiflora. — The Grandiflora belong to the climbing and clinging species. The stems are thin, with very small spines in clusters, and have long thread-like roots, which hang down and attach themselves to the trunks of trees. Reglei Grandiflorus, McDonaldi Nycticalus and Rostratus are among these, the last-mentioned being the only red night-blooming cereus. Reglei has the grandest flower of any cactus I have ever seen. Two years ago one of mine bloomed whose flower measured 18 inches in diameter. The petals are very narrow, of a waxy white, sepals tipped with a bright red, the innumerable silky stamens sending out a delightful and delicate perfume. Although lasting only a few hours, the one flower amply repaid me for the little care bestowed upon this rare plant. Grandifloras are all epiphites, and in their native tropical homes hang from the trees, heavy with the weight of their own magnificent blossoms and filling the air with their sweet fragrance. [Pacific Rural Press, June 17, 1899, p. 373]
i believe that the latter two cacti mentioned could be Selenicereus pteranthus [f. macdonaldiae; nycticalus], and a member of the epiphyllum genus rather than of cereus, respectively. i still have no direct leads on the Reglei subspecies of the Grandiflorus. to make matters worse, the grandiflorus is often confused with the pteranthus, and back in 1899 the two might have even been conflated. Selenicereus wercklei sounds similar but by name only; the physical flower itself does not match the above description.
i thought i could just google and be like ‘haha @reglei youre a cactus’ and now im stuck wondering whether or not this giant grandiflorus still exists. apparently all of the selenicereus, dubbed the “queen of the night” cactus, only blooms once a year for only a single night and smells like vanilla. sounds like a pretty magical thing but they’re also pretty rare. is the Reglei subspecies completely gone?

If orchids keep dying on you, probably because you're treating it like a terrestrial plant, not an epiphitic parasite that grows horizontally in the air beneath the shade of a tree branch. In other words, you're babying it, you're taking too good of care. Orchids thrive on neglect. Orchids often bloom right before they die in a last hurrah to save the species. They can be brought back from the brink of death with zero roots. They're hardcore. Just put your orchid in a bathroom window or above a sink and leave it tf alone (maybe near a humidifier if you live where its really dry, and never near an air vent which will dry it out). Most orchids are easy to keep alive in the average home, especially phaleonopsis aka moth orchids. And always water from the bottom. Don't trim leaves or the aerial roots which poke out of the pot.
Orchids need:
A) Warmth
B) Water
C) Dry out between waterings
D) Humidity (no lower than 45%. Prefer 60% plus)
E) Airflow on roots
F) Indirect light
G) Weak fertilizer
H) to be left tf alone (no touchy)
Common symptoms & their treatment:
Yellow soft leaves that fall off= too much water (let media dry out completely before you water again. Its more important to raise humidity than to water a pot. Poke holes in plastic pot if there aren't any, or repot in unglazed terracotta)
Yellow/brown/black crisp leaves= sunburn (put further away from window or behind sheer curtain)
Black spots= fungal or viral infection (usually from water contact on leaves. Dry leaves with napkin. Spray with neem oil. Spots won't go away but they won't get worse)
Leaf blemishes (may be oozing or turn yellow)= pests (neem & diatomaceous earth)
Black squishy roots= rot (too much water, just let it dry out and use sterile scissors to cut off dead roots, then sterilize roots with H2O2. Put dab of cinnamon paste over cuts)
Soft papery roots= dry (needs more humidity, not more water)
Wrinkly "accordion" leaves= dry (needs to be watered)
Bad smelling or moldy media: rot from age or too much water. (Repot in fresh moss or bark. Spray roots with H2O2. Use same media as it came in or it will be shocked and sulk)
Brown spots on roots (but roots remain plump)= salt burn (either from fertilizer or hard water. Flush pot with distilled water to rinse out salts. Next time you fertilize use way less.)
Won't rebloom= needs a 10-15F degree drop in day to night temperature (& maybe a little light fertilizer, possibly a little more light if the leaves are dark green)
sometimes I forget orchids grow on trees and I’m like. oh.
#i love these funky lil parasites#orchids are actually really easy to care for#come on its a parasite#they usually die because people are taking care of them too well#just leave it tf alone#houseplants#flowers#plant parent#orchids#botany#plant science#plants

My cypress tree!
Reflection:
To my surprise, I immersed myself into this challenge to realize the beauty and nature helped me overcome my fears. It was quite a spiritual experience shuffling through a water way gripping the trees for support. The amount of peace I felt as I leaned against my cypress tree to be filled with gratitude for this experience. The moments that are given to connect to nature must be taken. The calm of the water, the rocking of the trees, the life, the beauty, the stillness. All the fear is far away and light feels my bones, connectedness and a sense of place. My classmates had similar notions, really impressed by their appreciation for nature as well. It connected us all to a sense of place, unity, freedom to appreciate and understand nature and the nature of ourselves. It was an enlightening experience to which I say thank you!
Love, Ali

What is an air plant
What is an air plant
Air plant, native to Mexico, Central and South America, or as it is called universally “air plant”It is a plant that needs nothing but its roots to live. EPIPHITE ARE LIVING The air plant, which is frequently preferred with its different appearance in recent years and which we encounter all over the world outside its homeland, continues its life by clinging to other plants. Parched Earth
We are at the start of spring. New leaves are appearing on the Chinese Elm, the Silky Oaks are in bloom in their deep orange flowers. Some of the azaleas are struggling to open up, but others are already showing their marvellous flowers. The epiphites or stag horns are drying up. The grass is browning everywhere. The earth is crackling with deep slits showing signs of distress. Somehow the…

I killed an epiphit plant, like you only have to maybe wet then sometimes, you bow to me
people think bc i know a lot about plants and am getting a degree in botany and have a job working with seeds that i ‘’’’’’’can take care of a houseplant at home’’’’’’’’. of course not i literally cannot keep a plant alive for the life of me, i simply look at pictures of people’s enormous healthy plants on social media and and am enthralled not only by the human Hmmm Yes….Plant Look Nice instinct but also by the dynamic….like you go on and theres a pic of a fern big enough to fill the back of somebody’s car and the person is scrambling to make room for it in their home and meanwhile the plant itself only knows it is Vibing with no awareness of the chaos it has caused….you love to see it

A change from Christmas colours :-) Dancing-lady orchid (Oncidium altissimum) Wydler's Dancing-lady orchid - Oncidiums grow in the wild, mostly in the jungles of Central and South America, and the West Indies. First named in about 1750. You can find them growing high in the Andes, and in the Amazon rainforest. Fantastic flowers on big long spikes. Loves to grow on a tree with a bit of shade. Needs a drink in hot weather. This one was given to me about 20 years ago and is now about 20 times bigger. :-) #colourful #Orchid #Oncidium #foliage #DancingLady #yellow #Amazon #epiphite #abcmygarden #easycare #hardy (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmqY0oxv94Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
