Truly the emotional character beats of 4x12 are so wild every time I think about it
Liz: [crying] Max don’t go! What if you die?!
Max: nonsense you will save me with your science I’m absolutely not going to die
Liz, knowing she can’t science right now: he’s right I shouldn’t hold him back from being his true self
Kyle: I am in love with Isobel
Liz: [crying] I just sent Max and Isobel to their likely deaths
Kyle: man don’t beat yourself up over it I ain’t bothered like what even is object permanency anyway lol
Alex: [missing the entire season]
Michael: [crying that he’s gonna die]
Max and Isobel, upon seeing he hasn’t died (he is instead in the middle of dying): sup 🙂
Isobel: you didn’t die, that’s cool [most words they have shared to date]
Max: y’all wanna see a ketchup bottle magic trick lol
Michael: my bro’s back in action! 👏 I forget what your actual powers are tho 🤔
Everyone: [sobbing about the closed portal]
Portal: I am open now
Everyone: okay but what if we calmly let the dimension close up to our ankles just for fun first
Tezca: hi everyone I literally just descended from the sky or fell through the ground or something but I’m here to die now
Isobel: OH GOD OH NO OH GOD screaming shaking crying throwing up and shitting
Like somehow Tezca pulled the biggest emotional reaction and sense of urgency from the episode?! 😂

No but I can’t believe RNM is going out this badly *rubs temples* aside from 4x09 this season somehow manages to get worse with every episode
4x12 🧂
First off, Liz trapped in this offensive and shitty addiction storyline. Her being unable to narratively do anything and being completely useless to the main plot. Liz is the main character but she’s pushing none of this story along, she sat on a lab floor all episode crying and googling memory loss like she’s Bella in Twilight lmfao.
Max and Isobel decide to cross the portal because they’re under the impression that Liz can science them back, and then Liz just… doesn’t tell them she doesn’t know how to do it because she “doesn’t want to get in the way of Max’s destiny”. What? Maybe let them know so they can better prepare for this possibility.
Isobel etc being like “the pocket dimension isn’t dangerous because Michael was pretty confident he could come back” those are a lot of assumptions based on Michael (who you’ve thought was overly optimistic about his chances of going in and coming back out anyway), and also, they’re not back yet.
“Maria, is Alex the one you’re closest to?” Maria, for some reason: actually the person I’m closest to is Dallas who I’ve known for less than a year (I wanted Maria/Dallas! But this makes no sense)
Alex is dying and no one has problem solved this beyond “maybe getting back to earth will help”. Max turns up and says he has his powers back and Michael is like “thank god!!!” and then… for some reason doesn’t ask if that could be useful to heal Alex or, idk, even partially heal him to buy him more time.
They open the portal and then take the slowest walk of all time despite a storm behind them. Nathan and Quentin act out their alien powers and it looks the most ridiculous it’s ever looked. Alex is posed on the portal entrance but just chills there. Dude, roll. Liz is in the background and offers her lead character contribution of standing around while Clyde monologues. She couldn’t, idk, give it her best shot and try punching Clyde in the back of the head like she did to Noah in 1x11? Even if it doesn’t work she could at least be shown actively trying.
Isobel has a big emotional scene with bland Tezca and I guess we’re supposed to feel something but all I can muster up is checking the clock wondering why it’s taking them so long and they’re still not walking through the portal, and then Lily does some truly hilarious wail-acting as Tezca dies. Man, do I not care in the slightest. Speaking of Lily, that floppy-lipped Kybel kiss, oof.
I’m ready to be released from this utter nonsense next week lol.

wait i forgot
the lights flickering in kyle’s office during that kybel kiss 😒
when has isobel shown any electrical powers.
they could’ve done something actually unique to isobel like her kissing him and we see the mindscape filter but then it’s revealed isobel is letting kyle in to her mind, because, y’know, it’s always the other way around for isobel so we’d be getting character growth as part of ship development. but nah just keep mining the echo stuff i guess.

Max going on a mission to save Bonnie in 4x12: the Max and Bonnie becoming best friends agenda 😌
Just two overpowered aliens obsessed with humanity and experiencing the simple joys of life! 🥰

Notice how Max wasn't at all afraid to kiss Liz goodbye even though he didn't want to take the mist earlier that day because he was so afraid if he'd lose control from kissing her?
I think they just wrote a goodbye kiss without remembering the significance of Max kissing Liz with his powers again despite them talking about it like 5 mins earlier in the episode lol. Like damn, not as if that drove his entire character arc this season and the 4x06 kiss made him give up a part of himself 😂
So let’s say we follow on from that scene in the lab and redo the portal goodbye scene in the desert. Can you IMAGINE if 4x12 had done a 1x01 parallel of Max’s shaking hand reaching out to tentatively touch Liz’s skin once he got his powers back? The slow, giddy smiles when it’s all okay?
The nervous, tentative kiss that starts as a peck and then lingering, wistful, calm, that they’ve really truly got this handled together?
And because it’s the end of the season/series and they haven’t been on the same page for half the season so something more romantic would be nice to wrap their story up:
Something that would really show Max’s powers can comfortably exist between Liz/Max and be an asset to them as a team—
If Liz is so nervous about him going, them agreeing to a handprint so they can share a psychic link while in separate dimensions—so Liz can still feel that he’s alive and it keeps her focused.
And when Max needs to stop the storm, and Tezca tells him to think of Liz? Now Max is actually being able to hone in on that bond with Liz, Liz being able to physically feel it on the other side and go through it with him, and them getting the affirmation that Liz can be the source of Max’s power and strength and focus if they really try.

Thinking about the 4x12 synopsis again and it specifically mentioning Max and Isobel going on a mission to save Bonnie. She gets left behind? Injured? Targeted by Clyde/Shivani? 🤔
