Eon: Dragoneye Reborn - Alison Goodman (Eon #1)

3.75/5 - reread for the 10th time probably; gender ???? as a theme; deeply inspired by Chinese and Japanese religious beliefs and imperial traditions

I couldn't tell you exactly what it is that keeps me coming back to this book. Eona, as a protagonist, isn't particularly likeable, or even good at their job. Most of their time in this book spent being pushed around by other more powerful characters.

However, there's a certain sense of danger and a certain sense of gender questioning happening here that really draws me in and has drawn me in for near on 10 years now. This book, as the first in a duology, is a bit of a slog, but I find the next one all the more rewarding because of it. There is also positive and not-weird representation of transgender people and queer people here, which is a big plus. And in that vein, reading it now it's super clear to me that Eona is bisexual.

A major detractor, however, is the treatment of the main character's disability. She has a previous hip fracture that doesn't heal properly, resulting in a limp and chronic pain which prevent her from being able to perform certain movements and fighting stances. At the end of the book, she is insta-healed through bonding with her dragon properly for the first time, which is just a very ableist trope that I didn't appreciate. Especially because I feel like it removes some depth for the character later on.

Eona review.

I started to love this book because of it’s intensity...but I really didn’t like the ending. I didn’t hate it, but after such an intense, emotion crushing series of events - I was looking for that same energy at the end, and found I was disappointed.

This book follows Eona. It is known, now, that she is a woman. She told Kygo at the end of the last book before the palace was attacked. Kygo fled and Eona escaped with her friends. All the other Dragoneye are dead and Ido is in prison. Eona must find Kygo and get a handle on her power. But every time Eona tries to make a union with her dragon - the other dragons rush her, destroying everything in their path.

My favorite part...I’m not sure if I had a favorite part. This book made me anxious and I was constantly terrified for the characters. Everything had me panicked. Which is pretty impressive.

My least favorite part was the ending, as I have stated many times lol. I thought that Ryko’s death was useless and just meant to destroy what little of the readers heart was left after this book. He and Eona never truly got to make amends with each other. Also, Ido just...died. Eona is left with no power. Is Kygo really going to make her empress? She isn’t royal, so I’m leaning toward no.She doesn’t want to be his concubine. I feel like she lost everything.

My favorite character is Eona. She was pushed down over and over, but she kept going. She was always questioned and everyone tried to make her believe she was less because she was a woman. Even when she was all alone and everyone was against her - she did not give up. That’s impressive.

My least favorite character was...Ryko. I tried to understand his suspiciousness and his point of view. But his cruelty against Eona was just that: Cruelty. I felt it didn’t suit him. And him turning everyone against her? Not cool. He was very hateful.

I am currently reading The Complete Collection of Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Things have been hard lately, so I have read much. I have lost a lot in the last few weeks, I cannot go into it, but I am struggling.

r | are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

i read a LOT so I definitely think I’m influenced in small ways by everything I’ve read, because I know that’s probably at least part of how I’ve evolved and gotten better as a writer, because I see things I want to emulate. I definitely consider Rick Riordan a big influence, because I’ve read all of his books and they’re so like. Relatable, despite being about fantastical things. There are several things I’ve read that I consider an influence despite the authors not being so much of one (such as Eon/Eona, the best fantasy duology I’ve EVER read, and a few fanfics in other fandoms) simply because I liked the way they drew out the drama or the way they did the dialogue, things like that. In BTSfic specifically I definitely have to say that @/fortunexkookie, @/seokoloqy, @/personawife, and @/junqkook specifically have been really big influences and inspirations, because the four of them are what really inspired me to start actually writing and posting, and the way all of them do specific things just makes me wish I was that good, and drives me to be better. /end ramble

In my published stuff, I think it’d have to be Persephone Yoongi, because of all the bs he’s dealt with as a whole, or maybe Hephaestus, since she’s probably the MC closest to my heart. As far as wips go.......Forever Rain Namjoon is at the top of the list, for a lot of reasons that I can’t specify because spoilers, but he’s followed pretty closely by 666!Jimin, though Jimin’s is for different reasons. 

n | is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

....all of them? LOL, I’m kidding. I think I feel like “pls someone finish this for me” a lot, especially with Forever Rain rn, but that’s because I’m soft and also because I tend to work on things so much that I start hating them a little. Overrall, though, while I definitely think that there are authors out there who could do probably better, or at least different, with some of my ideas - like the drama at the end of From Eden, or the entire premise of Forever Rain - I think it would make the fics themselves so different that, like. It wouldn’t be the same. Because as much as I sometimes talk smack about my fics, and as much as I call them my shiny garbage, I do genuinely love all of my stuff, and even if I think it might be better by someone else, I really like the finished products as they are. /end ramble lmao

Eon, Dragoneye Reborn #1 (out of 2) by Alison Goodman (November 2020)

Twelve-year-old Eon has been in training for years. His intensive study of Dragon Magic, based on East Asian astrology, involves two kinds of skills: sword-work and magical aptitude. He and his master hope that he will be chosen as a Dragoneye--an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good fortune.

But Eon has a dangerous secret. He is actually Eona, a sixteen-year-old girl who has been masquerading as a boy for the chance to become a Dragoneye. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic; if anyone discovers she has been hiding in plain sight, her death is assured.

When Eon's secret threatens to come to light, she and her allies are plunged into grave danger and a deadly struggle for the Imperial throne. Eon must find the strength and inner power to battle those who want to take her magic...and her life.

Would I recommend it to anyone? If you like books inspired by Eastern Asia and magic, then yes.

Level of (dis)satisfaction based on the summary and my expectations? I was a bit disappointed, but I think it's because I guessed the most important plot twists early on...

My thoughts on it? It's not a bad book but I really wanted to punch Eona 80% of the time. She's so stupid in what she does, it's so frustrating. I thought the biggest secrets were pretty easy to guess, but I don't know if it's because they were too predictable or because I'm used to this kind of book now, but it contributed to my frustration towards Eona because while we understand what's going on quickly, she spends I don't know how many chapters wondering "oH bUt WhY dOeS iT dO tHaT?". Anyways, other than that the story and world-building are interesting, so I think I'll read the second book (hoping that Eona will be less stupid, plz pray for me).

Est-ce que tu le conseillerais à quelqu’un ? Si on aime bien les trucs inspirés de l’Asie de l’Est et la magie, oui.

Niveau de déception/satisfaction par rapport au résumé et tes attentes ? J’ai été un peu déçue mais je pense que c’est parce que j’ai deviné les plus gros plot twist assez rapidement...

Avis sans spoiler ? C’était pas un mauvais livre mais j’avais vraiment envie de frapper Eona 80% du temps. Elle est vraiment trop stupide dans ses actions, c’est hyper frustrant. J’ai trouvé les gros secrets hyper faciles à deviner mais je sais pas si c’est parce que c’est trop prévisible ou si c’est parce que j’ai l’habitude de ce genre de livre maintenant, mais du coup ça contribue à ma frustration envers Eona parce que pendant que nous on comprend ce qu’il se passe rapidement, elle passe je sais pas combien de chapitre à se dire “aH mAiS pOuRqUoI çA fAiT çA”. Bref, sinon en vrai l’histoire et le lore sont intéressant, et je pense que je lirai le 2 (en espérant qu’Eona soit moins stupide, svp priez pour moi).

Caso não fossem tapas na bunda, cantadas abusivas e outros toques e falas indesejadas, teria continuado com sua vida sedentária, porém o interesse em aprender a dar bons murros e chutes se fez urgente. Conta com alguns golpes ofensivos que diz ter inventado em momentos de cólera, porém é certo dizer que sua experiência com as artes marciais não é abrangente o suficiente para ter seu próprio estilo de luta.

Seja moto, carro, trailer ou o caramba que você arrume, ela ira querer revira-lo até encontrar o possível defeito. Costuma dizer que desde sempre sente certa atração por montar e desmontar coisas, e que nisso acabou encontrando uma paixão ainda maior: Motores e o Funcionamento de automóveis. Ela pode não ser um bom piloto, mas certamente sabe o funcionamento da maioria dos carros e motos de trás para frente e de frente para trás, e a paixão por automóveis acabou atribuindo outra habilidade para a acastanhada, o conhecimento geográfico. Oras, ela não poderia juntar dinheiro num potinho para conseguir comprar um dia um bom carro, e não saber onde está enfiando o próprio nariz, não é mesmo? Por último e como a cereja do bolo de suas habilidades, podemos contar também com o fato de ser mestre na arte de reparos "humanos" também. I can see an addiction taking shape here) Rules: Write your 10 favorite female characters from 10 different fandoms (yeah, so maybe I cheated and I wrote 12, who cares) They're not in order, either. I can't pick favorites between all these. 1. Maerad from The Books of Pellinor. Honestly, she reminds me a lot of myself in so many ways. Loved her character evolution. 2. Yona from Akatsuki no Yona. She starts off as a delicate flower and now she's the bravest fire dragon of all times (metaphorically, not a spoiler) 3. Michonne from The Walking Dead. Badass #1, beautiful and brave. And she uses a katana. Honestly, just marry me. 4. Dubhe from Emerged World Wars. Another badass af, strong inside and out. Her story just tore me apart (no spoilers, I'm not saying which part). 5. Ahriel from Alas de Fuego (Wings of Fire). Best angel warrior ever. 6. Auri from Kingkiller Chronicles. She's just so pure and precious (and so wise) 7. Eyrien from Las Sendas de La Profecía (I don't think there's an English version). Brave, strong, wise, beautiful night elf? She was my idol for a long time. 8. Saba from Blood Red Road. Strong-willed and brutally honest. She's a tough one. 9. Eona from Eon: Dragoneye Reborn. This is why a lot of men are afraid of women. Seriously, just read the book. 10. Fire from... Fire. I'm weak against powerful redheads, and this is THE powerful redhead. 11. Wanda from The Host. Because although she's an alien she taught me so much about humanity, love and generosity.  12. Dana from Crónicas de la Torre (Chronicles of the Tower). I grew up with her, and she means so much to me.

Eona

This is the sequel to Eon: A Dragoneye Reborn The edition I read is 637 pages, split into 26 chapters, the text on the pages is standard size.

This is the cover of the edition that I read, I’ve noticed that the cover picture may vary. But the content is the same. I highly recommend the entire series!

CONTENT WARNINGS: violence, gore, torture, character death, death in general, misogyny, multiple mentions of attempted rape, ableism, sexual harassment, blood, unintentional self harm, transphobia(?)

I read this book right after reading Eon, and hooo boy, was this good.

Some important things to note before I go into the plot summary:

LADY DELA, THE TRANS WOMAN, STAYS ALIVE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BOOK

Major spoilers for the first book follows in the plot summary:

The basic plot is after the events in Eon, Eona has joined the resistance and has to help Kygo (the rightful emperor) reclaim his throne from his asshole of an uncle (Sethon) who killed Kygo’s father, the previous emperor. However, Eona needs help controlling her dragon power, so she turns to Lord Ido (an asshat in every sense of the word) as he is the only other Dragoneye alive.

Eona starts to have feelings for Kygo, but for some reason she also starts to have feelings for Ido. What?! That asshole tried to kill you, and now you are attracted to him?! (I swear its explained in the book, but I can’t do it here as its major spoilers)

I don’t want to ruin the ending, so read the book to find out!

Eon review.

I really liked this book. It made me so anxious and panicked. I ended up thinking about it every time I set it down. I read it every free moment I had. Definitely got some Mulan vibes from it.

This book is about Eon...or should I say Eona? She’s a canidate to be the next Dragoneye, which is a position only for boys. On top of hiding her true gender, she also has a crippled hip, which in this book, seems to be an omen of evil. People often use ward evil signs when she passes by. She fights to get to the Dragoneye ceremony, but ends up not being picked by the rat dragon. In her despair, she tries to get the dragon to see her - using her dragon sight and hua (which is the magic in this book), but instead she calls upon another dragon...the long lost mirror dragon. 

My favorite character is Eona. She fights for her place, fights past having a bum hip and being a girl in a man’s world. Her spirit is fierce and I rooted for her every step of the way.

My least favorite character is Ido. He is a nasty man. It seems that he is always LOOKING to head down the darkest path, he never seems to want to try to find a path toward good. He is content with his maliciousness.

My favorite part was when Eona unites with her dragon. Seeing her heal and become a powerful WOMAN was exhilarating. I found I was so happy to see her accept her true self.

My least favorite part was when Ido found out that Eona was a girl. As soon as he looked at her like a girl, he found her desirable and was planning on raping her. It was disgusting.
