It's very similar to granite in composition, which is really a quartz/alkali feldspar mix, so if you wanted to put it into layman's terms, you could say "A certain kind of quartz" is my favorite shiny rock. It's a bit more rare than your average shiny rock due to the interesting circumstances under which it is made. As the temperature of the magma gets low enough to solidify, it gets very thick, which makes it hard for the glass to form as opposed to a sort of crystal, so a rapid cooling needs to take place at that moment, making it rarer to find in nature.

As for lab grown shiny rocks, I assume you mean all the talk surrounding lab grown diamonds and all the drama therein. I think it's all silly.
