One Hour Make - Feb 2018 - Simple Cushion Cover

This month’s make is to make a Simple Cushion. This is also called an Envelope Cushion. Now I will start off by saying you will need a sewing machine and basic sewing machine skills – nothing fancy, just switching the machine on, threading the needle and being able to do a basic stitch.

What you will need:

Sewing Machine and thread

Material - you will need some for the main cushion and a contrast for the edges or this edging can be the same material if you wish

Cushion Pad

Pins

Scissors or cutting wheel

Dressmaker's chalk or some way of marking the material

Measuring tape

A note about material. This will need to fit your cushion pad.  So, if you have 16 x16 inch cushion pad, then aim for 24x20inch square of material minimum. You can buy good quality material anywhere now – from high street like Dunelm who stock quality brands like Clarke & Clarke amongst others, to Amazon and eBay. I like Clarke & Clarke fabrics and I also buy from Higgs & Higgs (www.higgsandhiggs.com) as well as Amazon.

Process:

Step 1: This is the longest step as its about sizing and cutting the material.

Once you have selected the material for the main bit of the cushion, lie it out on a table, face down. The put your cushion pad on top.

Make sure you have enough room at the sides. I like to leave 3-4 inches to allow myself wriggle room.

Fold over the other side of the material so it overlaps the material that is there. Its up to you how much of an overlap you have but aim for at least a 6 inch overlap so you can’t see the cushion pad from the opening.

You will have more material that you need in length, so I fold under that material so I can see exactly how much I need without cutting.

Once happy, mark where you are going to cut the material with dress maker’s chalk or a pin – do this on the length and widths. Also mark where the cushion is so you can tell where each of the overlaps are for future steps. Now cut out the material

 Step 2: For the edges you will need 2 strips of material the width of the material. You can use a contrast or I like to you bias binding – it gives a nice effect. Cut out the strips from the edging material you have chosen.

  Step 3: Sew the contrast edges to the ends of the material. A good tip is to fold the material under at the edge – its gives it a better shape and then sew the fold in, when you sew the edging to the material

You will now have two contrast edges

Step 4:Put the material back on a table and into the finished cushion shape using the marks you did for where the cushion pad was. If you’re unsure, then put the cushion pad back in and fold the material around it. Put a pin where the overlap is – maybe best to do it on both sides.

Step 5: Remove the cushion and turn the material inside out. Make sure the pins are still in place so you have the overlap right.

Sew the two open sides together – make sure you do back stitches at the start and end for added strength. Make sure you leave a good inch seam and take care when you go across the contrast section, it will be tougher as there is more material there.

Step 6: Once sewn, you will notice you probably have some excess material. Cut this off if you wish for neatness. I also always cut the corners off so there isn’t an excess amount of material in the corners when you put the cushion cover the right way around. This cutting off the excess may seem a waste but I prefer it that rely on my measuring!

Now turn the cover the right way so the right side is now out, and voila, your cushion cover

  Just add cushion pad and your ready
