St Andrews Castle.

The last time I visited the castle I was only about 8 year old, we had rented a caravan for a week, and I can't recall much of the castle itself, but back then these properties were all free to visit.

Anyway, I knew quitea fair bit abot the place, the siege andthe burningofthose who oppsed the Catholic Churc which led to Cardinal David Beaton's downfall and murder.

I chose to take the headphones and audio guide to listen to as I wandered around, it' comes withthe entry nd is about 40 minutes long, it had finished before I had explored the whole place, much of itis narated in the character of James Hamilton, the son of the Scottish Regent of the sam ename. James would have benabout eight or nine when he was taken prisoner at the castle, the audio guide is him recounting tales of his childhood there, and is verygood.

You can see from thefirst pic that the castle was quite impressive, and still isin it's ruinous state. It is often described as Beaton's Ecclesiastical Palace’.

Entryfee for visitors is £7.50 for adults, and £4.50forchildren. A Family (1 adult, 2 children) costs £15.00.

A word about lit contest entry fees

I’m probably jilted or something, but I get four to five emails a day from journals pushing fiction, nonfiction, and poetry contests. These contests have entry fees, usually between $15 to $25. I’ve entered some that didn’t have fees.

There’s not been many of those lately.

Now here’s my thing: I once ran a literary contest and asked that those entering donate what they want, adding that however much was collected would turn out to be the amount of the prize money. None for me, is what I’m saying. I had several entries and it took a lot of reading but cost nothing. Late nights at the laptop, that was all. I took the donated money and gave it to the winner.

Bottom line is I don’t think these entry fees are necessary. It seems beyond odd for people to pay money to win a contest that doesn’t really afford them anything more than an added line to their bio sketches for submitting to the same journals to be published without pay.

I don’t have anything witty to add here at the end. Just give this some thought.

Chicago, IL- Photographers from all over the world descended upon Chicago this weekend to partake in the first ever “Professional Camera Bag Competition” at Union Station. The competition, which is the first of its kind, is the brain child of Sally Costanza, a professional camera bag owner who grew tired of the photography-related competitions currently available. Sally sat down with us to share more about the competition.

“I’ve been a professional camera bag owner for, oh my gosh, it’s been a little over ten years, now,” Ms. Costanza said. “It’s a lot of hard work but I am proud to say that I have accumulated well over 100 camera bags in that amount of time. If you had asked me ten years ago if I would be as successful as I am today, what with all my bags, I would have laughed. It’s true that dreams really do come true; I’m living proof of that.”

The competition is divided into categories:

Rolling Bags Bag for one Camera Bag for two Cameras Mini Camera Bags Cross-Body Camera Bags Bag that Doubles as Diaper Bag Bag Most Likely to be Owned by a 12-year old

As for the rules, Ms. Costanza explained they are very simple:

“The competition is open to anyone with a camera bag and the $50 entry fee. Camera Bag owners can enter as many different bags as they’d like; we do not discriminate in any way. In fact, we encourage multiple entries. The winners will receive a gift certificate to Applebees, but more importantly, a printed certificate suitable for framing. So enter as much as you’d like, as long as you have the $50 entry fee per bag. I can’t stress that enough.”

When asked if Ms. Costanza would be entering the competition, she laughed and said, “Me? Enter my own competition? Of course I will.” And with a wink said, “Not that I expect to win, or anything.”
