I originally wanted to do a Sci-Fi/Fantasy (or Star Wars/Baldurs Gate 3) challenge for Drawtober. But my day one drawing was going to be Gaya. Then it just kept taking longer and longer to finish. Managing time and expectations for myself is still a bit of a struggle.

RX-78-lā-III Lah Gundam

I enjoyed Metaverse. It managed to (occasionally nonsensically) include everything you'd probably want it to. Battles between the main characters, plenty of both speaking and background appearances, a decently fun and very Build-y plot. And, importantly, it's the perfect length for this type of program, being long enough to achieve what it needs to without overstaying its welcome. My one thing is, while I understand the importance of having Rio as a new player, I feel the story would have had more of an impact is Seria was the main character, considering the final encounter.

Anyway, they explain in the instructions that 'Lā' is the Hawaiian word for sun. That's cute. You'd think it'd use some brighter colors if that's the case, but I like the concept behind this one. It's Rio's first real Gunpla made for battling, so it uses a cheaper, easier kit as a base. It also has a level of customization to it around what we see in GBF, as it has a new helmet, shoulders, front skirt, knees, backpack, and weapons. Everything you need to make your kit just distinct enough.

While there are a few different pieces, this is just the Entry Grade RX again, and there's very little different between them. The only real specific thing to mention would be the backpack storage for the Beam Lā Naginata isn't very solid. They do include parts to build the V2 seen in episode 1 apart from the shield and bazooka. As I was also messing with my original EG during photos, it feels kinda loose, so I worry about this thing's longevity, though it's a very cheap and main character suit, so it shouldn't be hard to get another one down the road.

The Details: Most of what I did was panel lining, as the EG is pretty good about colors. I did add metallic red to the inside of the forehead crest and metallic blue to the peripheral cameras, and yellow to the knees for screen accuracy.

Overall, it's a cute kit. If you haven't built the EG RX, or even if you have, it's a fun day's build.

Today is a specialy day I am watching The Little Mermaid.

Little Context: I grew up loving watching the little mermaid on my old little television, always on repeat. Ever since I wanted to watch it on a silver screen but since I was born in '96 I never got a chance to. I cried and cried trying to see it on a big screen but keeps being heart broken by the words of my auntie's that it was shown in the 80's.

So when Disney announced that they will be adapting it into a live action, you can imagine what I felt. It was like a dream come true, the little kid in me was jumoing up and down and no gravity pulling me down.

I was a bit skeptical on the casting, but kept my positivity on being able to see it on the big screen. But seeing the first teaser of the film, I know its going to be amazing.

After watching the film in both Imax and regular cinema, I can say that I am satisfied and was so freaking happy. Halle is Ariel and the film is as amazing as I have imagined. It was spectacular and I couldn't really know what was happening 70% of the time since I was crying all throughout the film. I am happy. This is the best day of my life.

New Buddie Fanfic - It's been three months and I'm still pissed about that BS "Vertigo" storyline because I hated it and I wish TM would have written something better for Eddie. There were several options but he just chose to use some wacky foolery because he likes it instead of considering the audience's response to it.

t’s Tuesday and the clock shows it’s 9:21AM but I’m sitting on the couch journaling my thoughts. I’m so excited that I can hardly hold this Apple Pencil in my hand because I spent a fantastic four day weekend with my fiancé in Malibu, CA and after we proposed to each other Thursday night, I journaled Friday morning but I haven’t written anything since then because I’ve been busy. It’s not an excuse, it’s a fact because yesterday, I got married and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I’m literally so happy and I’m smiling so big my cheeks have been hurting since Buck said, “Yes.”

Other than the day Chris was born, I don’t believe I’ve ever felt like this. First and foremost, I’m grateful for my son. He’s my pride and joy and I’m thankful that we’ve mended our relationship. It’s been a long road but he forgave me for messing up our lives and our family earlier this year and now we’re on the right path.

I’ve been married before and during that time I learned a lot of lessons that included the importance of communication. We didn’t know how to talk and all we did was argue instead of learning how to communicate therefore, I’m going to ensure it's drastically different during this marriage because we're going to be together forever.

Things are completely different this time because I wasn’t pushed or pressured into it and I know our love is the foundation of this lifetime bond we’ll forever share.

do you ever give yourself ideas that seem like they shouldn't take much time in execution and then end up taking up way too much time?

anyway we're back with the first real entry for thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats of 2024. this time we're talking:

cast appearances by episode count

season count is one thing; there's only 21 of those so far. by contrast, we've had 222 episodes of d20 as of 1/16/2024. by may 2024 we'll have finished fhjy and hit 241.

by the current count, the intrepid heroes' full seasons account for 128 episodes of the total 222, or around 57.6% of the total episode count. if you add the fantasy high oneshots, it bumps up to 59.4%, and if you consider that we're adding 20 to the count with fhjy, by may 2024, intrepid heroes episodes will make up 62.6% of the dimension 20 catalog.

anyway here's the cast list:

the uncontested winner is brennan lee mulligan with 211/222 episodes. 95% attendance. the only times he hasn't been there are: the 4 episodes of shriek week, the 6 episodes of coffin run, and the gencon mismag oneshot.

in second place is lou wilson, with 151/222 episodes. this is every intrepid heroes season (128/222), plus 3 sidequests (4+10+6) and 3 oneshots.

in third, sweeping her way with the most recent season, is siobhan thompson with 147/222, after the ih seasons, 3 oneshots and 2 sidequests (6+10)

in fourth, we have ally beardsley with 144/222, after the ih seasons, 2 oneshots, and 2 sidequests (10+4)

very close in fifth, we have zac oyama, with 143/222, after the ih seasons, 4 oneshots, and 2 sidequests (6+6).

in sixth is emily axford, with 138/222, from 126 ih episodes, 2 oneshots, and one sidequest (10)

after this we have a steep drop off, since the ih episodes make up 57% of the total count, and will make up 61% by the end of junior year. anyway next is aabria iyengar, with 48 episodes, a little over half which she gm'd (26).

next is erika ishii, with 37 episodes. they've been in 5 sidequests (6+4+10+6+10) and one oneshot.

to finish off the top ten, rekha shankar and izzy roland are tied with 26, since both have been in three sidequests [(6+10+10) and (10+6+10) respectively]

the last of the three cree, in 11th place, is matthew mercer, with 18 (6+6+6) episodes, 6 of which he gm'd

after which is carlos luna and mike trapp with 12, though carlos has been behind the scenes as crew in many more.

13th is taken up with another tie, this time between danielle radford and becca scott, who each have 11, though their splits are different, since danielle has been in 2 sidequests and a oneshot (4+6+1), while becca has been in 1 sidequest and 1 oneshot (10+1)

So I know back when it was “up for interpretation” a lot of people cancelled gunpla orders and the like. Which of course everyone is entitled to do obvi BUT if you want more G Witch content, you need to FORCE Bandai to acknowledge its success. I come from a forgotten line of G Gundam fans and well…just look at how long it’s been since the first run of g Gundam gunpla (specifically the 1/144 scale) and the newest run of g Gundam kits. It’s been actual Decades.

That’s simply bc it’s not as popular and didn’t sell as well. On the other hand, you can look at Gundam SEED, a series which wrapped up FOREVER ago but since the kits still sell well Bandai went “Might as well make another entry”.

So basically, don’t be afraid to snag that Aerial or Calibarn. The more you shove Suletta and Miorine in Bandai’s face the more they’re forced to face its success. The more they’re forced to look at how well G Witch did as a brand the more they’ll be enticed to make more g witch stuff (even if it’s years from now).

HGUC 1/144 E.F.S.F. Mass-Produced Mobile Suit RGM-79N "GM Custom"

Another entry to the GM collection!! Joining the 2001 GM, 2003 GM Cold Districts Type, 2012 GM Sniper II, and 2023 GM Missile Pod, 2011's GM custom is part of one of Bandai's best runs, with pleasing balance between sticker detail, molded detail, colour separation, cost, and option parts. Of note is the inclusion of 7 whole pre-posed hand options, with 2 closed fists, 2 open hands, a special hinged open left hand to get around the poor shoulder articulation, and special right-handed weapon holding options that accomodate the large square forearms.

The kit overall is a welcome upgrade from the 2003 GM Cold Districts Type, with shoulders on pegs that rotate forward, and better ball-jointed hips. The shoulder and leg connections are nicely secured and have a lot of detail, and the single colour style of the kit allows parts to be cemented together to hide the panel gaps you often get with older kits.

This kit comes with the older light trans-pink beam saber effects (rather than the deep pink you'll see on newer kits) and an extra beam saber hilt, as well as a really nicely detailed bullpupped "GM rifle" and a post-0079 style shield.

All of the red vents and booster nozzles, as well as the grey inside the shield, need to be painted on, which was a little annoying in terms of cleaning up. Like other recent kits I've done, I added some gold as well.

This kit came with a nice set of detail stickers with complete freedom on how to apply them. There's plenty of EFSF lettering, lots of numbers, and a badge for the spaceship "Albion". I chose to number this "120", after the kit number, as the suit didn't appear to have any canon number. Combined with spare stickers from my other HGUC kits it looks really nicely detailed. Unfortunately there's no foil stickers with this kit, so I used my green metallic Gundam Marker for the sensors.

Just like my GM Cold Districts Type I also used some black sponged paint, as well as Tamiya weathering sets C and D for heat discoloration, oil stains, and paint damage. I tried to limit the degree of weathering here to save time, and I think it also helps let the base kit shine through.

I also picked up a set of custom resin weapons as a promotion from the hobby store I use. I painted the shotgun for display with this kit, and it looks really fitting. I like how the company name also looks like an in-universe logo.

I had a lot of fun with this kit, and I definitely think that's it's a more fun building experience than the other older GMs I've built.

Hey! Are you interested in Gunpla, but worried about investing money into tools only to not enjoy it? Then try out the Entry Grade line first! It's a line of 1/144 scale kits designed around getting people into Gunpla and they only cost about $10-$15 USD. They don't require tools to assemble and while they may be lacking the accessories of their HG brethren, they come with great color accuracy for their scale and look great out of the box without any extra effort!

There are currently 3 EG kits available: RX-78-2 Gundam, Strike Gundam and Nu Gundam! And EG kits of the Lah Gundam and Build Strike Exceed Galaxy for the new Gundam Build Metaverse series airing next month will be releasing soon!

The line is a little small right now, and sadly there aren't any G-Witch options for new fans, but it really is a fantastic and inexpensive first step into the hobby. They're perfect for dipping your toes into the gunpla hobby to see if it's for you or not, without investing more than $30+ on your first kit + tools.

That said, if you did get into Gundam with G-Witch and specifically want to take the plunge with a G-Witch kit first, absolutely nab anything from the line. They're generally easy to build, pretty good with color separation and very accessible! The Gundam Schwarzette or Demi-Barding are definitely my recommendations for an easy to build but great looking kit from the line!

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. Why is it harder for larger countries to have citizens with a high median level of wealth? What makes it harder for a country with the US population vs, say, Japan? I can imagine obvious challenges, but also reasons why larger countries can make their median citizen wealthier more easily. Economies of scale, more chances for innovation that can later be widely adopted, strong institutions having outsized effects. Can you help me understand the logic more?

It's not a stupid question! It's a common but incredibly counterintuitive thing that comes up in statistical comparisons. The short version is: you get more variance with small samples than with large samples.

To start off, let's point out this isn't just theoretical. According to the IMF, the twelve highest GDPs per capita are in this chart:

(If you use a different source the numbers change somewhat but not dramatically so.)

If you rank countries by population, those are rank 122, 163, 118, 134, 162.5, 95, 99, 115, 3, 191, 169, and 103.5. The US is in position 3 and the next-highest is at 95 (out of about 200).

Conversely let's look at the ten most populous nations:

When ranked by GDP per capita, those come out at ranks 73, 127, 8, 98, 138, 144, 87, 128, 56, and 71.

And notice already this looks different: these numbers are mostly in like the middle half, whereas the others were almost all in the bottom half. And that makes sense based on the theoretical argument I'm about to make.

A big country has a lot of people in it. And more than that, it has a lot of places in it. And while those places all have a bunch of stuff in common (like being part of the same country), they also have a bunch of things different from each other. So you can think of the per capita GDP of a big country as, like, averaging together the per capita GPDs of all the regions in it. (And then the per capita GDP of a region is a weighted average of the incomes of all the people in it.)

If you look at a city-state like Singapore or Hong Kong, you're "averaging" together one city. And for a small country like Ireland or Luxembourg, you're averaging one city with a small amount of hinterlands. That means that if that one city is unusually lucky, the whole country is rich.

(And if that one city is unusually unlucky, the whole country is poor. The ten least populated countries on the list that have IMF data have GDP per capita ranks of 146, 119, 95, 9, 152, 60, 106, 16, 134, 52, which are all over the map. None of them are at the very bottom, and I assume that's because cities are richer than non-cities, in general. And also maybe a city-state that's also dirt poor gets swallowed up.)

And if you look at our list of richest countries, you can really see this effect. Ireland is a tax haven for the EU, and traditionally so is San Marino. Singapore is a weirdly-managed outlier city state, as is San Marino (and Hong Kong used to be). Qatar and the UAE are all drafting off of oil revenue, and for that matter so is Norway.

And to drive the point home, let's look at the list of US metro areas by per capita GDP.

San Jose beats every country in the world hollow. San Francisco is tied with the top entries on the list. And our tenth-richest metro area would place fifth on the list of countries by per capita gdp. (Contrast Paris at €60 and Berlin at like €42k, if my quick googling is right.)

And then to drive the point home, look at the top of the list. The richest metro area in the US isn't San Francisco or New York or Los Angeles (which at 18th and $86k doesn't even show up on that list up there, but would still put it at 8th in the world); the richest metro area in the US is some place called Midland TX. It's a small town that sits in the middle of a giant oil field, and as I understand it it's basically a base camp for all the oil work out there. So it has one thing going on, and that thing is super lucrative, and distributed across relatively few people; so it gets the top spot.

And that's why the richest countries are likely to be small.

GAT-X105B/EG Build Strike Exceed Galaxy

While I think Metaverse was a perfectly harmless, cute series, that doesn't mean it couldn't be better. I watched the Gridman movie shortly afterward, and that did way more of the crossover stuff you want to see in the same amount of time. As every main character got a new Gunpla, I'd like to take a second to talk about how I'd rather they'd have handled each season's representation in those reviews.

A big misstep with the Fighters cast is their ages. Sei is the same age as Sekai, and considering he wasn't revealed until EP3, finally revealing the version of him teased in Try would have been a great payoff. It's also a bummer how every Fighters universe character besides Fumina doesn't have an Avatar, and they had a bunch of already existing outfits that would be both perfect and great marketing. You give Sei his EP1 Amuro costume, Ral his original series outfit, and you give China, Rinko, and even Gyanko their MS Girl outfits, because there're kits of them and that'd be good marketing.

Also, not making the characters their proper ages mean they had to omit Reiji's daughter. And how perfect would her inclusion have been? Seeing one of the original characters getting their kid into Gunpla? Maybe when Reiji comes in on the Star Burning Gundam, he's wearing the Beargguy F backpack and she's along with him? It would have been an amazing end cap to Fighters, Try, and Metaverse. Fighters was probably the season that was handled the worst of the four, which is disappointing since it was the first.

The Kit: Onto the kit, it is the EG Strike Gundam with new armor parts and backpack, but you'd think it was a new mold considering how it has no leftover parts. It has some nice accessories and a lot of hard points for customization. I do worry about longevity, considering my original EG RX-78-2, but other than that I have little issue.

The Details: Quite a bit of black panel lining, as well as some black paint to fill a few small areas. Metallic blue on the peripheral cameras and rifle scope. I also filled in the clear red parts with metallic red where I could to hide the plastic underneath.

Overall, a simple but neat kit with some cool gimmicks. I'd almost recommend getting two just to mess with the customization stuff.

Rayuga shared a list of the new rankings, so I knocked together a list of the previous rankings (Round 2 on LHS, Round 3 on RHS).

Food for thought:
