It's actually a reference to both the novel Dune by Frank Herbert, in which is it used in a mantra meant for steeling oneself called the "Litany Against Fear" it goes:

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." And also to the song Fear by Adam Freeland, which I originally heard in the very cool dreamcast game REZ, which is about a lot of things, but namely an AI evolving as it breaches various systems in a mainframe. I presume that it draws the lyrics from Dune, however it made an impact on me as a youth. I hope that wasn't too much of an answer! I'm not very familiar with zheani, but I'll check them out!

Barely a minute out of eternal solitude, and the former thief was back to that giddy trash talk.

Xerath fell silent, and the air grew tense. A charlatan? This meager spirit dared to gaze upon power incarnate, and call him a fraud? To liken their might as though they were one and the same? It would seem that any and all doubts must first be put to rest before any semblance of headway could made... Very-well. The area was spacious enough, and while Xerath hated to do this for something as trifling as a mere display of might, there could be no question as to his true status.

The Magus backed off a bit, and his form began to glow brighter. An explosion of arcane light rippled out from the Ascended, and when it faded, Ihsan would find Xerath towering over him. The air itself grew heavy with the presence of the Ascended’s magic, and even the sarcophagus restraining him looked to have changed, becoming more opulent.

Xerath spoke again, but his voice was different now, sounding clearer and with an even louder echo. “Behold, my power is unmatched!” Yet even now, the Magus could feel his ancient fetters straining against him, trying to conceal his majesty once more. “The Sunborn feared my might, and sought to contain me... A measure that was only half-successful. Even so, this wretched sarcophagus has persistently denied me my reign for ages; I can unleash my true power for but a fleeting moment, thanks to this crude but potent seal. Help me shatter these shackles, marid, and you WILL be rewarded. Otherwise, you will remain confined to that bottle for eternity.”

EDH Deck Tech: Kynaios & Tiro

Hello & welcome to this weekly deck tech! This week we’re doing something that is long overdue, talking about an EDH archetype that is very dear to me, which is Group Hug. I thought about doing a Phelddagrif deck tech, but I sort of did in the past and often talk about my deck, so I decided to talk about the objectively better version: Kynaios & Tiro of Meletis.

I say this version is better for a few reason; first of all they have a static effect that benefits everyone, while Phelddagrif’s effect mainly serve to give hippo tokens to people before it’s your turn if you have some mana to spare. Also they give you access to red, which is pretty nice. Oh and you get to have a cute couple as a commander, so that’s cool. The only reason I personally play Phelddagrif is because of my emotional attachment to the character. In any case, let’s get into it.

Mass Draw

The deck is almost only separated into two parts, the first part is mass card draw. The goal of the deck isn’t necessarily to win, you just want to help everyone and have a good time. Making people draw tons of cards makes people happy and makes sure everyone can play magic. Cards like Rites of Flourishing (which also helps ramping), Howling Mine, Font of Mythos, Edric Spymaster of Trest, Humble Defector, Ludevic Necro-Alchemist, Kami of the Crescent Moon, Heartwood Storyteller, Walking Archive, Minds Aglow, Prosperity, Temple Bell, Horn of Greed, Otherworld Atlas, Dictate of Kruphix, Fevered Visions, Well of Ideas, Noble Benefactor, Standstill, Oath of Scholars, Anvil of Bogardan & Jace Beleren. I know that’s a lot of cards, but that’s honestly most of what the deck does, you just want people to draw a ton of cards. Oh, and you should play Sphinx’s Revelation just to treat yourself.

Red Mass Draw

One of the reasons to play red is the access to a few nice draw spells. I wouldn’t play too many of them, but just some cards like Reforge the Soul, Wheel of Fortune, Magus of the Wheel & Wheel of Fate are plenty to really help out the deck and make sure everyone always have a grip full of cards.

Mass Ramp

If people are drawing tons of cards they need to play them or it’s pretty useless, so what you need to do is make sure people have enough mana to do things. There’s some sweet cards like Collective Voyage, Tempt with Discovery, Veteran Explorer, Ghirapur Orrery, Oath of Lieges, Eladamri’s Vineyard, New Frontiers, Shizuko Caller of Autumn & Magus of the Vineyard. You can also play a few ramp spells just for you like Sakura-Tribe Elder, Farkseek, Rampant Growth, Kodama’s Reach, Cultivate & Explosive Vegetation. Just make sure people can play all the cards they are drawing.

Being Extra

This is not for everyone, but you can go the extra mile and really help out people. A lot. Play cards like Hypergenesis, Tempting Wurm, Hunted Wumpus, Oath of Druids, Braids Conjurer Adept & Show and Tell. Turn that magic game into a real fiesta!

Building a Pillow-Fort

While you’re boosting everyone, you just want to make sure nobody uses their brand new cards to attack you. Most of the time people will leave you alone since you’re helping them, but you just want to make extra sure. Cards like Propaganda, Ghostly Prison, Windborn Muse, Kazuul Tyrant of the Cliffs, Norn’s Annex & Collective Restraint. You don’t need too many, just enough to keep yourself safe for some time.

Polite Answers

You need to play some removal and answers, but you also want to be nice about it, so anything that gives something back to your opponent is good. Cards like Swan Song, Curse of the Swine, Pongify, Rapid Hybridization, Chaos Warp, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Oblation, Arcane Denial, Beast Within & Terastodon. Oh, and you should play Krosan Grip, Blasphemous Act & Supreme Verdict because they’re just really good cards.

Win Condition?

That’s entirely up to you, if you want to win or not. Personally I like finishing second; like I help everyone and usually die last. Everyone has a good time, including me, since I enjoy just sitting back, doing my things and watching people go crazy with their decks. But if you want to actually win you have a few options; stuff like Approach of the Second Sun, Mind Over Matter (with Temple Bell & any graveyard shuffle effect or Life from the Loam), Entreat the Angels, Laboratory Maniac, Constant Mists & Sandwurm Convergence. There’s probably a lot more options and to be honest any 2-card combo can also do the trick. Like I said, it’s really up to you for that.

I have so much fun playing these kind of decks and I know I’m not the only one. PREFACE.

The main subject and design of this epistle is much the same as the former; in it the apostle again instructs and admonishes Timothy in what belonged to his office, and also warns him to shun the conversation of those who had erred from the truth, describing at the same time their character. He tells him of his approaching death, and desires him to come speedily to him. It appears from this circumstance, that he wrote this second epistle in the time of his last imprisonment at Rome, and not long before his martyrdom. As to the first, does this follow; the Scriptures must be read by Timothy, a priest, a bishop, a man of God, a minister of the gospel, whose office it is to instruct and convert others, therefore they are proper to be read and expounded by every ignorant man or woman? Does not St. Paul say elsewhere, (2 Corinthians ii. 17.) that many adulterate and corrupt the word of God? does not St. Peter tell us also, (2 Peter iii. 16.) that in St. Paul's epistles are some things....which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own perdition? See the preface to the Gospel of St. John, where reasons are brought for which it was requisite that the Church should put some restraint to the abuse which the ignorant made of reading the Scriptures in vulgar tongues. As to the second consequence, does it follow: every Scripture divinely inspired is profitable for St. Timothy, for a priest, a bishop, a man of God, a minister and preacher of the gospel, to teach and instruct, and conduce to bring both him and others to salvation; therefore they contain all things that a Christian need to believe? &c. Is not every Christian bound to believe that the books in the canon of the New and Old Testament are of divine authority, as in particular these two epistles of St. Paul to Timothy? Where does the Scripture assure us of this? But of this elsewhere. (Witham) --- Every part of divine Scripture is certainly profitable for all these ends.
