November 1968 proved pivotal to achieving the goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. The highly successful Apollo 7 mission that returned American astronauts to space provided the confidence for NASA to decide to send the next flight, Apollo 8, on a trip to orbit the Moon in December. At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida, the Saturn V rocket and the Apollo spacecraft for that mission sat on Launch Pad 39A undergoing tests for its upcoming launch. In the nearby Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the three stages of the Saturn V for the Apollo 9 mission sat stacked awaiting the addition of its spacecraft undergoing final testing. Also in the VAB, workers had begun stacking the Apollo 10 Saturn V, while the Apollo 10 spacecraft arrived for testing. As the Apollo 8 and 9 crews continued their training, NASA named the crew for Apollo 10 and announced the science experiments that the first Moon landing astronauts would deploy. Middle: Entertainer Bob Hope, second from right, taped an episode of his show at the Manned Spacecraft Center, now NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, with guests the “Voice of Mission Control” Paul P. Haney, left, Apollo 7 astronauts Schirra, Cunningham, and Eisele, and television star Barbara Eden. Right: The Apollo 7 Command Module on display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Dallas Love Field. Following their highly successful flight, Apollo 7 astronauts Walter M. Schirra, Donn F. Eisele, and R. Walter Cunningham returned to Houston’s Ellington Air Force Base on Oct. 26. On Nov. 2, President Lyndon B. Johnson presented the astronauts with Exceptional Service Medals at the LBJ Ranch in Johnson City, Texas. Four days later, comedian Bob Hope filmed an episode of his weekly television variety show in the auditorium of the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC), now the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Hope saluted the Apollo 7 astronauts in a skit that included actress Barbara Eden, star of the television series “I Dream of Jeannie” that featured fictional astronauts. Paul P. Haney, MSC Director of Public Affairs and the “Voice of Mission Control,” also participated in the skit. Following the recovery of Apollo 7, the prime recovery ship U.S.S. Essex sailed for Norfolk Naval Air Station in Virginia, where on Oct. 27 workers offloaded the Command Module (CM), and placed it aboard a cargo plane to fly it to California for return to its manufacturer, North American Rockwell Space Division in Downey, for postflight inspection. On Jan. 20, 1969, the Apollo 7 astronauts as well as their spacecraft took part in President Richard M. Nixon’s first inauguration parade. In 1970, NASA transferred the Apollo 7 spacecraft to the Smithsonian Institution that loaned it to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, Canada, for display. Following its return to the United States in 2004, it went on display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas. Left: The circumlunar trajectory of Apollo 8. Middle: Apollo 8 astronauts William A. Anders, left, James A. Lovell, and Frank Borman during a press conference shortly after the announcement of their mission to orbit the Moon. Right: Anders, left, Lovell, and Borman in the Command Module simulator. On Nov. 12, 1968, NASA Headquarters put out the following statement: “The National Aeronautics and Space Administration today announced that the Apollo 8 mission would be prepared for an orbital flight around the Moon.” That momentous statement ended weeks of intense internal agency deliberations and public speculation about Apollo 8’s targeted mission. The original mission plan called for Apollo 8 to conduct the first test of the Lunar Module (LM) in Earth orbit, but when the LM fell behind schedule, NASA managers in August began contemplating sending the Apollo 8 crew on a lunar orbital test of the Command Module (CM). The decision hinged partly on a successful Apollo 7 mission, and with that milestone passed, NASA Administrator James E. Webb approved the daring plan. On only the second crewed Apollo mission, the first crew to launch on the Saturn V, and only the third launch of the mighty Moon rocket, with the second of those experiencing some serious anomalies, the decision weighed the risks against the benefits of achieving the Moon landing goal before the end of the decade. With the Dec. 21 launch date fast approaching, the Apollo 8 crew of Frank Borman, James A. Lovell, and William A. Anders and their backups Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin, and Fred W. Haise had begun training for the lunar mission even before the official announcement. During a Nov. 16 press conference, Borman, Lovell, and Anders discussed their preparations for the historic mission. On Nov. 19, at KSC’s Launch Complex 39, engineers completed the Flight Readiness Test to validate the launch vehicle, spacecraft, and ground systems. Left: The Apollo 9 prime crew of James A. McDivitt, left, David R. Scott, and Russell L. Schweickart, not pictured, prepares for an altitude chamber test of their Command Module (CM) in the Manned Spacecraft Operations Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Middle: McDivitt, emerging from the CM, Schweickart, at left in the raft, and Scott complete water egress training in the Gulf of Mexico. Right: The Apollo 9 backup crew of Charles “Pete” Conrad, left, Richard F. Gordon, and Alan L. Bean prepares for their water egress training. The LM formed a critical component to the Moon landing effort. Delays in preparing LM-3 for flight resulted in the crewed test to slip to Apollo 9 in early 1969. The three stages of the Apollo 9 Saturn V stood stacked on Mobile Launcher 2 in High Bay 3 of the VAB. The Apollo 9 spacecraft components, CSM-104 and LM-3, continued testing in the KSC’s Manned Spacecraft Operations Building (MSOB). The prime crew of James A. McDivitt, David R. Scott, and Russell L. Schweickart, as well as their backups Charles “Pete” Conrad, Richard F. Gordon, and Alan L. Bean completed several altitude chamber tests with CSM-104 during the month of November. On Nov. 30, workers placed LM-3 inside its Spacecraft LM Adapter, topping it with CSM-104 to complete the spacecraft for its Dec. 3 rollover to the VAB for mating with the Saturn V. McDivitt, Scott, and Schweickart conducted water egress training in the Gulf of Mexico near Galveston, Texas. On Nov. 25, workers aboard the Motor Vessel M/V Retriever lowered a mockup CM with the crew inside into the water in a nose-down position. Flotation bags inflated to right the spacecraft to a nose-up position. The astronauts then exited the capsule onto life rafts and recovery personnel hoisted them aboard a helicopter. Backups Conrad, Gordon, and Bean completed the test on Dec. 6. Left: The Apollo 10 prime crew of Eugene A. Cernan, left, John W. Young, and Thomas P. Stafford. Right: The Apollo 10 backup crew of L. Gordon Cooper, Edgar D. Mitchell, and Donn F. Eisele. On Nov. 13, NASA announced the crew for the Apollo 10 mission planned for the spring of 1969. The fourth crewed Apollo mission would involve the launch of a CM and LM on a Saturn V rocket. Depending on the success of earlier missions, Apollo 10 planned to test the CM and LM either in Earth orbit or in lunar orbit, the latter a dress rehearsal for the actual Moon landing likely to follow on Apollo 11. NASA designated Thomas P. Stafford, John W. Young, and Eugene A. Cernan as the prime crew, the first all-veteran three person crew. The trio had served as the backup crew on Apollo 7 and had flight experience in the Gemini program. As backups, NASA assigned L. Gordon Cooper, Donn F. Eisele, and Edgar D. Mitchell. Cooper had flown previously on Mercury 9 and Gemini VIII, Eisele had just returned from Apollo 7, while this marked the first crew assignment for Mitchell. As support crew members, NASA named Joe H. Engle, James B. Irwin, and Charles M. Duke. Left: The Apollo 10 Command Module, left, and Service Module arrive at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Middle: The Apollo 10 S-IC first stage arrives at KSC’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). Right: Workers in the VAB stack the Apollo 10 first stage on its Mobile Launcher. Flight hardware in support of Apollo 10 continued to arrive at KSC. Following delivery of LM-4 in October, on Nov. 2 workers mated its two stages and placed the vehicle in one of the MSOB’s altitude chambers. Stafford and Cernan carried out a sea level run on Nov. 22. The CM-106 and SM-106 for Apollo 10 arrived at KSC on Nov. 23 and workers trucked them to the MSOB where they mated the two modules three days later. In the VAB, the Saturn V’s S-IC first stage arrived on Nov. 27 and workers erected it on Mobile Launcher 3 in High Bay 2, awaiting the arrival of the upper stages. Middle right: A mockup of the solar wind composition (SWC) experiment. Right: A suited technician deploys mockups of the Apollo 11 experiments – the SWC, far left, the PSEP, and the LRRR, during a test session. On Nov. 19, NASA announced that when Apollo astronauts first land on the Moon, possibly as early as during the Apollo 11 mission in the summer of 1969, they would deploy three scientific experiments – a passive seismometer experiment package (PSEP), a laser ranging retro-reflector (LRRR), and a solar wind composition (SWC) experiment – during their 2.5-hour excursion on the lunar surface. The PSEP will provide information about the Moon’s interior by recording any seismic activity. The passive LRRR consists of an array of precision optical reflectors that serve as a target for Earth-based lasers for highly precise measurements of the Earth-Moon distance. The SWC consists of a sheet of aluminum foil that the astronauts deploy at the beginning of their spacewalk and retrieve at the end for postflight analysis. During the exposure, the foil traps particles of the solar wind, especially noble gases. Left: The Lunar Module Test Article-8 (LTA-8) inside Chamber B of the Space Environment Simulation Laboratory (SESL) at the Manned Spacecraft Center, now NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. Middle: Astronaut James B. Irwin inside LTA-8 during one of the altitude runs. Right: Workers remove LTA-8 from SESL’s Chamber B at the conclusion of the altitude tests. On Nov. 14, engineers in MSC’s Space Environment Simulation Laboratory (SESL) completed a series of altitude tests with LM Test Article-8 (LTA-8) to certify the vehicle for lunar missions. Astronaut Irwin and Grumman Aircraft Corporation consulting pilot Gerald P. Gibbons completed the final test, the last in a series of five that started on Oct. 14. Grumman pilot Glennon M. Kingsley paired up with Gibbons for three of the tests. During the tests that simulated various portions of the LM’s flight profile, the chamber maintained a vacuum simulating an altitude of about 150 miles and temperatures as low as -300o F. Strip heaters attached to the LTA’s surface provided the simulated solar heat. NASA transferred the LTA-8 to the Smithsonian Institution in 1978 and it is now on public display at Space Center Houston. Depiction of Zond 6’s circumlunar trajectory. In another reminder that the race to the Moon still existed, on Nov. 10 the Soviet Union launched the Zond 6 spacecraft. Although it launched uncrewed, the Zond spacecraft, essentially a Soyuz without the forward orbital compartment and modified for flights to lunar distances, could carry a crew of two cosmonauts. A cadre of cosmonauts trained for such missions. Similar to the Zond 5 mission in September, Zond 6 entered a trajectory that looped it around the Moon on Nov. 13, passing within 1,500 miles of the lunar surface. The spacecraft took photographs of the Moon’s near and far sides and of the distant Earth. As it neared Earth during its return journey, trouble developed aboard the spacecraft as a faulty hatch seal caused a slow leak and it began to lose atmospheric pressure. Ground controllers initially steadied the pressure loss and performed a final midcourse maneuver that allowed Zond 6 to perform a skip reentry to land in Soviet territory on Nov. 17. However, the spacecraft continued to lose pressure and a buildup of static electricity created a coronal discharge that triggered the spacecraft’s soft landing rockets to fire and cut the parachute lines while it was still descending through 5,300 meters altitude. Although the capsule hit the ground at a high velocity, rescue forces were able to recover the film containers. The Soviets at the time did not reveal either the depressurization or the crash but claimed the flight was a successful circumlunar mission. With two apparently successful uncrewed circumlunar flights and the resumption of crewed missions with Soyuz 3 in October, these Soviet activities perhaps played a part in the decision to send Apollo 8 to the Moon. News from around the world in November 1968: Nov. 5 – Richard M. Nixon elected as the 37th U.S. President. Nov. 5 – Shirley A. Chisolm of Brooklyn, New York, becomes the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Nov 8 – The United States launches Pioneer 9 into solar orbit to monitor solar storms that could be harmful to Apollo astronauts traveling to the Moon. Nov. 13 – The HL-10 lifting body aircraft with NASA pilot John A. Manke at the controls made its first successful powered flight after being dropped from a B-52 bomber at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert. Nov. 14 – Yale University announces it is going co-ed beginning in the 1969-1970 academic year. Thanks for the tag! Today I'm going with Solana Leto Bellamy, love interest of my adult magical girl series, Night Of The Blue Moon!
Are you named after anyone?
Kind of. My first name, Solana, doesn't come from anyone, but my middle name, Leto, comes from the goddess of childbirth and modesty. Maybe Phoebe will introduce me to Leto one day? I'd love to meet my namesake!
When was the last time you cried?
Yesterday at work. I was...Forced to do...Things I don't wanna talk about...Again. I'm Akai Starlight, an agency Vtuber with millions of subscribers, and I hate it. I hate working for VSweeties, and I hate all of the shit that my boss puts me through, but I can't quit until I find another job.
Do you have any kids?
No, and I don't want any. I don't like kids, and I know that some women end up permanently disabled from childbirth, so...Never happening.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
A fair bit. It adds to my charm when I'm on camera as Kirameki Sunstone, my indie Vtuber persona. I'm hoping that Kirameki Sunstone will get me out of having to be Akai Starlight.
What is the first thing you notice about people?
Their eyes. I can instantly spot whatever someone's feeling in their eyes. I see way too much misery, boredom, and people trying to hide that they've been crying.
What is your eye color?:
Blue and gold. I have central heterochromia.
Any special talents?
I'm good at singing, playing videogames, and entertaining an audience. I have to be, though, because I'm a Vtuber, and if I wasn't good at any of those three things, I wouldn't have my job.
Scary movies or happy endings?
Both! I'm into cheesy analog horror and slasher films, but I also love rom-coms. My all-time favorite movie is But I'm A Cheerleader, partly because it helped me come to terms with the fact that I'm a lipstick lesbian.
Where were you born?
Brentwood, Essex, England. If you heard me speak, you'd know instantly that I'm an Essex girl.
Do you have any pets?
No, but my girlfriend, Ariel has a cat.
How tall are you?
About 5'11". I love being taller than my girlfriend because I love being able to sweep her off her feet <3
What was your favorite subject in school?
Is that a serious question? It is? Oh, well…I wasn’t good at anything at school. I didn’t do well in classrooms, or on sports fields. I don't understand Shakespeare, I'm bad at math, can't balance an equation to save my life, and I'm no good at any sports. I’m 25 and I’ve never had to use a thing I learned in high school in my life.
What is your dream job?
Indie Vtuber. I don’t wanna be ultra famous, I just wanna be famous enough to be Kirameki Sunstone full-time instead of working for VSweeties.
Tagging @gioiaalbanoart and @the-golden-comet!
OC Interview Tag
Ooh so excited to do this! Thank you very much for the tag @winglesswriter 💙
I will be answering for Christopher, the MC of Far Beyond The Moon.
Are you named after anyone?
[exhales] Maybe after a grandfather that I didn't get to know? My mother never talked much about our family. Maybe I'll skip this one.
When was the last time you cried?
... Can I skip this one?
Do you have any kids?
Yes! Allison just turned seven. She's just the best. [smiles]
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
When I do say something ironic or sarcastic, people tend to not understand me correctly right away... so I try not to. It's too awkward.
What is the first thing you notice about people?
Whether or not they're friendly.
What is your eye color?
Blue! Couple of baby blues.
Any special talents?
I used to play the piano. I don't know if that counts as a talent? [laughs] I do still play the guitar from time to time. And I used to sing.
Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings! [lying]
Where were you born?
Westfield Hospital, Massachusetts. It's the nearest hospital from my hometown Hillsburg.
Do you have any pets?
Sadly no! I would love to have a dog, but I don't have the time. I volunteer at Helping Paw – I don't think you've heard of it, it's a tiny dog shelter just outside of Hillsburg. We've got some amazing dogs there.
How tall are you?
6'1. I'm told I'd be taller if my posture wasn't this bad.
What was your favorite subject in school?
English, if I had to choose, I guess. Loved the theater club though! I was even in a high school band! [laughs]
What is your dream job?
Tough question! I'd love to have my own shelter someday. But the job I'm working right now isn't too bad, so I don't think about... dreams, I guess. Aw, man, that sounds depressing! [laughs]
.
Oh my god, that was such fun!! I've only ever answered as the author about the character, so this was very different. Let's tag a few people, but no pressure!
@mikathewriter, @verba-writing, @alinacapellabooks, @tryingtowritestuff24 + open tag for anyone who wants to do this!

╰┈➤ ❝ INTRODUCING . . . JIHUN ! ❞
BORN ON JULY 1, 1997 IN ESSEX, UNITED KINGDOM AS JEON JIHUN, JIHUN IS THE SECOND OLDEST MEMBER OF P NATION’S UPCOMING CO-ED GROUP: DISTRICT4 (D4), THE NEWEST EDITION TO THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED "UNIVERSE-4" PROJECT. JIHUN’S POSITIONS INCLUDE BEING THE PRODUCTION CAPTAIN, LEAD MALE RAPPER, AND THE MAIN VOCALIST OF DISTRICT4.
AS A FORMER CUBE ENTERTAINMENT ARTIST, JIHUN WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE PUBLIC WHEN HE DEBUTED AS A VOCALIST AND RAPPER FOR THE BOY GROUP PENTAGON IN 2016. HE WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO PASSED THE FINAL AUDITION (ACCORDING TO THE SURVIVAL SHOW, PENTAGON MAKER) AND WAS ADDED TO THE FINAL LINEUP.
IN 2019, JIHUN WAS REMOVED FROM PENTAGON. HIS STATEMENT REVEALED THAT HE WAS DEPARTING DUE TO MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES — BUT JIHUN DIDN’T LEAVE FOR THAT REASON. THE CEO OF CUBE ENTERTAINMENT CONSTANTLY MISTREATED & PICKED ON JEON, THREATENING HIM INTO LEAVING. THE STATEMENT WAS RELEASED A WEEK AFTER HIS BIRTHDAY, WHICH WAS THE SAME DAY JIHUN WAS REMOVED BUT ALSO WHEN HE MET D4’S VICTORY.
JIHUN AND VICTORY AUDITIONED FOR P NATION’S NEW CO-ED PROJECT TOGETHER A MONTH AFTER MEETING AND ENTERED THE AGENCY TOGETHER AS WELL. DESPITE AUDITIONING FOR D4, PSY ORIGINALLY INTENDED FOR JIHUN TO BECOME A SOLOIST LIKE HIS FELLOW FORMER MEMBER, DAWN, UNTIL HE SAW THE KIND OF MUSIC HE CREATED ALONG WITH CORE4 SEEING HIM AS PART OF THE UNIVERSE-4 VISION.
2019
jihun’s ceo scowled bitterly from across the room in his office on the eighth floor of the cube building, venom laced with his words as the young male looked down at his shaking hands — holding them tightly so it wouldn’t be visible to choongmin.
“listen, i’ll offer you a deal.” he started, crossing his arms against his chest as the boy sank deeper into his seat, choongmin could sense jihun slowly shattering so he realized he might’ve been acting too harsh on the young male, “leave the company. we’ll say that you terminated your contract for mental health reasons, and you can re-debut elsewhere… i don’t care. but not with pentagon, not ever. or, you can stay with your group, but just know that i won’t be as easy on you.”
“you have talent and that’s not something up for debate, but it’s the kind that’s just not meant for pentagon or boy groups. i’d say you could do well as a soloist but i won’t even promise you that, either. maybe consider co-ed, kid, or just give it up.”
since that day, jeon jihun ended his contract. from that moment, it seemed like the shimmering light was taken from his eyes.
later that evening, jihun distanced himself from his members and decided to countdown to his birthday alone — carrying himself to a bakery near the cube building to buy himself a small cupcake and candle before everything started closing for the day.
“i hope you have a wonderful birthday, miss.” the baker sweetly said to the only other person inside, a short young woman with blonde hair and a bright smile.
“thank you! i hope so too, goodnight!” the mystery girl bid farewell, holding a small red velvet cupcake with a ‘21’ candle in her grasp, shifting her body towards the exit but was met with jihun’s drained and sad figure — but he perked up a little when he overheard that it was her birthday, and she was turning the same age as him.
“it’s your birthday, too?” he asked politely, motioning towards the sweet treat in the woman’s hands with a nod of his head.
“technically it’s tomorrow, but yeah! is it yours as well?” the bubbly girl responded, her eyes had the same sparkle that jihun had just lost, he missed what it felt like to feel as happy as the girl clearly looked… or let on.
“it is… i’ve never met someone with the same birthday as mine.”
“well, i’m spending my birthday alone for the first time if you’d like to ring in our birthdays together in an hour… my name is mars… do you like red velvet?” the blonde, whose name is mars, asked curiously, referring to the cupcake she had just bought for herself (not the group).
“i do. and your name is actually mars?”
“obviously not, i don’t give my real name away to strangers when i myself am a trainee.” mars quietly retorted playfully, shrugging her shoulders as she let jihun go up and order, “tell you what: you hang out with me tonight, and i’ll tell you my real name when i feel like i can trust you.”
“deal. i’m jihun, by the way.”
and the next thing jihun knew, he sat in a quiet and empty park on a bench beside mars. “so… jihun, you look so sad… right before your birthday, what happened?” she asked, her gaze was bubbly and bright, despite the look of concern she sported.
“i had to terminate my contract with my agency tonight, when i go home i have to break the news to my members. i’ve been dreading the thought of it since i walked out.” jihun confessed, staring emotionlessly at the concrete beneath his feet, his eyes flickered to the way that his new friend’s feet swung — they barely touched the ground when she sat, it almost made his heart swell from how adorable she was.
“wait a minute, i think i’ve seen you on the TV! have you already debuted?” mars asked, eyeing the man just inches away from her, trying to figure out where she’d seen him from.
“i did, but now it’s gone to waste. i wanted to be an idol, i’m thinking about just giving it up, apparently i’m not fit for a boygroup or even as a soloist and it took me debuting for my ceo to recognize it.”
“i’m sorry to hear that… i really am, jihun… i’ve been told that before myself, it hurts.” mars frowned, putting a gentle and sympathetic hand on jihun’s shoulder to comfort him, not wanting to overstep her boundaries yet she still had an intense urge to help him — and that’s when her eyes lit up at a potential idea.
“you should try out for P NATION’s new co-ed group with me!” mars offered, trying to be hopeful for the boy as she felt a warm breeze blow by, “i mean, i know you have a lot to do in order to leave… but i-i know what it’s like to try out for a group and be convinced you’d make it, but then it backfires at the least unexpected moment… my boyfriend debuted a few months ago, it’s been hard to watch him when it’s all i’ve ever dreamed of. so, let’s take what’s holding us back and use it as an advantage.”
jihun didn’t realize it then, but that was the very first time the universe made it known that his dream isn’t over yet. it was all because of his future group member, and a red velvet cupcake.

'I feel sexier as I get older': Back on TV in a compelling new drama, Michelle Dockery tells how her own confidence has soared after playing a succession of strong, sassy women
By GABRIELLE DONNELLY FOR WEEKEND MAGAZINE
22 May 2020
Since she burst onto our screens ten years ago as Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary, all cut-glass vowels and nerves of steel, Michelle Dockery’s kept us in a permanent state of emotional whiplash with the sheer variety of roles she’s taken on.
She was a drug-addicted con artist in the 2016 TV series Good Behavior, a gun-totin’ cowgirl in the acclaimed 2017 drama Godless, and a Cockney gangster’s moll in Guy Ritchie’s crime caper The Gentlemen.
One thing you will not see, she insists, is Michelle Dockery playing a piece of arm candy.
‘I like to play strong women,’ she says when we meet for coffee pre-lockdown in New England, where she’s been shooting her new TV mini-series Defending Jacob.
‘And even if they’re not strong, they have to be interesting. Multi-faceted, complex, complicated, three-dimensional... and flawed too, because people are. Anything but boring!’
That doesn’t mean they can’t be sexy though, and she says the added bonus to playing these characters is that, at 38, she’s finding herself feeling sexier than ever.
‘Sexy is not about having anyone else make you feel sexy, it’s about how you feel inside, and I have certainly felt sexier as I’ve got older.
But I think that’s a confidence thing too. I’ve been lucky enough to play such strong, confident women, and when you do that you definitely take something from them with you into your real life – you sort of get inspiration from them.’
Her latest character in the thriller Defending Jacob is a straightforwardly good woman – although one thrust into bewildering circumstances.
Laurie Barber is happily married to handsome local Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber (Captain America film star Chris Evans), and mother to her wise-cracking 14-year-old son Jacob (Jaeden Martell).
She’s the sort of woman who goes for a run before breakfast, then quizzes her son on vocabulary over coffee before heading to her high-profile job managing a home for abused children.
She’s just so together... until her son is accused of one of the most hideous crimes imaginable – the cold-blooded murder of a classmate – and her entire life and social circle begin to unravel as the police investigate.
‘It’s a really gripping story, because it’s so difficult for this couple to comprehend that their child might commit any sort of crime, let alone a murder,’ says Michelle of the story, based on the 2012 novel by William Landay.
‘They’re both defending their son, and like any parent would, Laurie’s asking at the same time, “Where did I go wrong?”
'There’s conflict between Laurie and Andy because at the start of the story she’s the emotional one and he’s the calm one, but then as the story goes on there’s a need for Andy to be emotional too.
'So they’re always seeing things from a slightly different perspective.
‘It’s a very human, raw story about what something like this can do to a family, and what’s so interesting about Laurie is that as her life is turned completely upside down, she also begins to question things about her family – “How well do you really know your partner? How well do you really know your child?”’
Michelle’s own family background is modest but as stable as anyone could wish for. The youngest of three girls born to Irish-born lorry driver turned surveyor Michael Dockery and his redoubtable wife Lorraine, a former shorthand typist turned social worker, she was brought up in Romford, Essex, working class and proud of it.
‘My mum is loving but she’s also strict,’ says Michelle. ‘When I was about seven I stole some penny sweets from a shop. Mum caught me and made me go back and apologise to the shopkeeper, and I’ve never stolen anything since!’
She was also raised – as were her sisters Louise and Joanne – to speak up for what was right.
‘I was brought up to stand up for myself. To speak up when I felt passionate about something, when I felt the need to make my voice heard about something that mattered.
'I think a lot of that comes from having sisters, because we’ve always supported each other all along.
'If I’ve ever felt bullied or pushed into a corner, I’ve always been able to stand up for myself. And if I see it happening to someone else, especially younger actresses, I’ll stand up for them too.
‘I hate bullying. I have huge admiration for women in Hollywood and elsewhere who have come forward to tell their stories about that, and have stood up against people like Harvey Weinstein.
'It’s horrendous what they experienced and I’m glad something has been done about it.’
It’s safe to say no one has succeeded in taking advantage of Michelle, and she says now that when she first broached the idea of going into acting to her parents they were not in the least bit concerned.
‘They weren’t alarmed by it at all!’ she laughs. ‘They made sure I had a good education so I had something to fall back on.
'Both my parents are wonderful. My mum is the most incredible woman, she inspires me.
'And my dad’s amazing too – even though he spent our growing-up years with a bathroom that was never free! They let me be who I want to be.
'So between them and my two elder sisters, who are still my best friends, I’m very lucky. We call ourselves the Essex Mafia!’
Her career choice can hardly have come as a surprise to the family, as she says she wanted to be an actor ever since she can remember.
When she and her sisters were small they attended a stage school in the evening, and they would put on plays at home to entertain the family.
Michelle apprenticed at the National Youth Theatre when she was a teenager, and as soon as she’d taken her A-levels she enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
‘I feel I learned more at drama school than I did anywhere else,’ she says. ‘Even when I was at regular school I was never out of the drama department, so I didn’t do very well in other subjects.
'I just didn’t want to be taught anything else. But there’s a huge amount you learn in drama school besides acting, like history and literature, and that was where I came into my own.’
It was, of course, Lady Mary who made Michelle famous. ‘It happened overnight,’ she says.
‘Well, I’d been working in the theatre for seven years, so it wasn’t really overnight, but I remember after the first episode of Downton Abbey aired, walking into my newsagent’s where I was living and seeing a picture of myself, Laura Carmichael and Jessica Brown-Findlay, the three Crawley sisters, on the cover of three papers and that was huge.
'Then the first time I was recognised on the street was in New York, and that was even bigger because that’s when it hit me how big the show had become if I was being recognised in America.’
With talk of another feature film in the works after last year’s hit Downton movie, she says playing Mary is as comfortable as slipping into a second skin.
‘I have huge fondness for her, she’s been a big part of my life. That was a very special show, and I hope it’s one that stays with people forever.’
It was through Downton that she met the man she thought she’d be married to now.
In 2013, her co-star Allen Leech, who played chauffeur Branson, introduced her to Irish-born public relations executive John Dineen.
She and John fell in love, became engaged and were in the process of planning their wedding when John was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He died in December 2015 with Michelle by his side.
At his funeral, the day after her 34th birthday and a day before what would have been his 35th, she told mourners, ‘He was my friend, my hero, my king, my everything.
'We celebrate him, we honour him, and we will miss him.’ She has not spoken out about her grief, but has admitted that it was her friends and family who helped her pull through, saying, ‘They are the ones who see you through the most difficult times.’
She has been dating Jasper Waller-Bridge, brother of Fleabag’s Phoebe, for a year now.
They met through friends and Jasper, who is six years Michelle’s junior and the creative director at a talent agency, accompanied her to red-carpet events before lockdown.
It was also reported that she bought a £1.7 million house in north-east London before Christmas.
Michelle hasn’t commented on the relationship but she does say that a sense of humour – surely a given with any member of the Waller-Bridge family – is vital in a relationship.
‘My parents always taught me to see the funny side of life and never to take myself too seriously.
'I find that more and more as I get older – I’m finding ways to laugh things off much more than I used to be able to.’
Right now, Michelle Dockery would seem to have plenty to smile about.

Best Wedding DJ - What You Should Learn
Based on the type of wedding you are having, a DJ can be a great alternative for your entertainment requirements. A DJ can provide a cost-effective remedy rather than live entertainment. Not only is hiring a DJ considerably cheaper, but they're also able to cater to a wider variety of music styles, tastes, and genres than a band or other musicians. This isn't to say that live entertainment is not for you, it only comes down to the facets that make up each individual wedding. Should you decide to go with a DJ, you will discover that hiring a professional and reliable DJ for your wedding could prove to be a very difficult task. With quite a large number of companies to select from and a vast majority of these agencies being online, it can be very arduous to detect which DJ entertainment companies are legitimate, professional and trustworthy. Are you hunting for event dj essex? Check out the previously mentioned site.
Below are our tips to hiring a professional Wedding DJ. Hire an experienced DJ. Ideally, you'd want a DJ who entertains at weddings regularly, week in and week out and has done so with a strong 7 years of experience behind them. A well-seasoned wedding DJ will know the proceedings of a reception like the back of their hand, they will know the perfect song to match the perfect moment and they'll add a touch of class to your wedding. Make sure that the DJ is licensed. This is important for a few reasons. If a DJ is unlicensed, and a place or a representative obtains knowledge of the, you set your wedding at risk of not having entertainment for the rest of the day as they do have the ability to order the DJ to stop playing. A licensed DJ obtains all their music and tunes from respectable outlets like iTunes and other retailers. Not only is this music legally attained, but it also ensures that it is the highest quality version of the document or tune. The presentation will indicate quality. This tip can be tricky to gauge when a lot of wedding entertainment vendors are now online and do not have physical locations that you can visit.
However, from our experience, a bad website, online presence and branding usually result in a poor quality DJ and even worse equipment being shipped out to your wedding. You would like a DJ to come out who is presentable, respectful to the dress code and is friendly and always smiling. As the old adage goes, "You get what you pay for". Even though some companies charge more than others, don't permit pricing be the leading decision making factor when choosing the entertainment for one of the greatest days of your life. Rather than looking at just how much an agency expenses, try to appear at the value that you are getting when you hire a DJ for your wedding. DJ's who are not regularly playing in reputable public venues are usually not worth the price. These days, there are various sorts of DJ's and entertainment agencies on the market. Some specialize in parties, others in entertainment and some specialize in weddings. Book with a company who strictly deals with weddings will ensure your big day gets the attention it deserves for everything to go smoothly.

A Few Great Ideas For Your Own Classifieds Site
1. Product Catalog or Comprehensive Corporate Website
One of the unduly forgotten applications of a good classifieds script is running a full-fledged corporate website on it. The built-in CMS allows you to create all sorts of pages, include news and current events, product and services description page and categories. And, of course, the catalog of the products presented by your company (equipment, machinery, devices, furniture, etc). You can break the product catalog in several sub-categories, if needed. Besides you can include a number of fields to provide extensive description of all the features of your products and/or services, insert video and plenty of pictures to present each item in the most favorable light.
Tumblr media
2. Vehicle Classifieds Portal
You can also create a fast growing and popular on-line multi-category vehicle classifieds portal that offers exciting and effective service to buy and sell any type of vehicles, accessories and related services. Classified ads can include vehicle specs, photos, mileage, price, year, body style, fuel type, exterior and interior color and more. And powerful and flexible search tools will have buyers searching for their specific vehicle. With your own vehicle classified website, you are instantly gaining the competitive edge by offering the highest variety of vehicles on a single website.
3. Business Directory
There is an effective way to create a fast growing and attractive Business for Sale Directory Service and give your customers access to a wealth of new business opportunities and resources. Your target audience will include startup business owners, entrepreneurs, investors, business brokers, managers, everybody looking to start a new business. You can easily create a SEO-friendly online business directory designed to offer businesses for sale, franchise opportunities, and feature business wanted ads.
It's a chance to organize a unique on-line marketplace where your customers advertise their businesses and expose multiple business opportunities to prospective buyers.
4. Restaurant and Hotel Guide
You can create a clean-cut Yellow Pages-style online Restaurant and Hotel Guide. It features popular neighborhood locations or tourist hot spots, and serves as a great town/city guide for visitors and locals alike. You can add extra sections (entertainment, sports and recreational activities) to turn your website into a veritable city/town community making money on banner advertisements from local service providers and listing fees. Such a guide for your local community is a steady source of income from local businesses lined up to post their classifieds ads on your resource.
5. Travel Agency Website
What do you think about a travel agency website? Great overview of travel packages on the front page. Hot/discounted tours posted as Featured Ads. Detailed description of every tour on Static pages, with a summary of offers for every country also on a static page with links to individual descriptions. Sounds good, doesn't it? Each listing displays essential field data: price, starting date, ending date, countries visited, a colorful slide show of places of interest, detailed description with an itinerary, and the ability to book the tour by sending a reservation request (event calendar). Summary of all the offers by continents, countries and regions worldwide can be presented at the front page.
6. Collectibles Website
One of the most obvious and simple applications of a classifieds software is creating a collectable website. You can have an all-in-one collectable website for your local area, or run a nation-wide collectable website on a more specific category (dolls, coins, toys, knives, artwork, antiques, jewelry, glass, pottery, radios, photos, sports items, memorabilia, etc.), or even a very focused website (Pre-WWII Silver Dollar Collectable, or Bowie Knives of the World). You can set up a collectible community and let fans like you build it and grow it. Change the design, look and feel, use advanced SEO features to get your items indexed by search engines to get max exposure and attract new members.
7. On-line Career Network
A good classifieds script can serve as an efficient tool to create a popular on-line career network serving Career Builders and Recruiters in your region, nation-wide, or worldwide. You can develop your unique job website that will serve the needs of businesses and recruitment agencies by offering thousands and thousands of full-time, part-time, and contract job vacancies everyday! It is also a great way of letting individuals advertise their skills and capabilities looking for their dream jobs. With career-related classifieds website, you will give people a voice and a platform to promote themselves, make them visible and available for new career opportunities. Feel free to contribute to your nation's economy by reducing unemployment and overcoming the recession.

Missing numbers
Investment in preventive services, like children's centres and youth services, could make a real difference to children's lives - but the lack of consistently good-quality data makes it difficult frontline staff, local authorities and central government to understand what works.
That's one of the conclusions of a new report I've published with my colleague Colm and the excellent team at Nesta. We hope that as well as being useful to those in the children and young people's sector, the findings - and the recommendations - will be useful more widely to people working with and thinking about data. There's a graphic for thinking about data in different ways, and everything.
In brief:
On the subject of Missing Numbers... you may remember the project launched last year by Anna Powell-Smith (Data Bites presentation here). This week, she's launched the Centre for Public Data which will look at improving data provisions in new legislation. It's a great idea. More details here.
Data has gone missing from DCMS (well, bits of policy, including 'government use of data' and open government), as responsibility has been transferred back to the Cabinet Office. My lukewarm take here.
We're missing Data Bites this August to give me/everyone a summer break. Back in early September. Watch back the archive here.
Flourish joined the ranks of those subject to missing attribution this week. They also join a very select group that includes Neil Kinnock.
In case you missed it, yesterday marked a year since Boris Johnson became Conservative leader, and today marks a year since he became PM. It's been another quiet year in British politics, etc.
Finally, Warning: Graphic Content will be missing from your inboxes over the next few weeks as I take whatever passes for a holiday in these strange times. There definitely won't be a newsletter next week, and it will be intermittent through August. Have a lovely summer (or whatever passes for that in the UK or wherever you are), and see you again soon!
Very best
Gavin
