In a most classic way, our visit with family ended in a wine bar at John Wayne airport watching the sun go down.
No kidding. Our view was up an aisle, through the terminal's panoramic windows, across the airfield, to a horizon composed of trees and buildings in the distance.
Like many of our trips, this one ended while we were waiting for our flight home.
Tumblr media
To honor the moment, we ordered two flights of wine, three red wines for Kimmer, three white wines for me. As we lifted the first of our glasses, Kimmer asked what we were toasting.
A successful trip for sure because there were some last minute hurdles and some Day One plot twists we had to navigate.
A good time with family in Irvine because that's an experience we never want to take for granted because it's always a good time.
The highlights include a family dinner at Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar our first night. A lovely lovely visit with Jacquie the next day pkus dinner at Bru Grill & Market that night. A peaceful nature walk on Friday morning. And a relaxing,. peaceful Saturday with that lovely sunset.
And last and most important, that Kimmer's aunt Jacquie was present for us, that the two of us had a great experience visiting her in Memory Care.
We never know how those visits are gonna go, is my point. There are a lot of moving parts over which we have no control.
So that's it in a nutshell, these things we're thankful for this trip as the sun sets on the other side of the airfield. As we toast our success. Four days. Done and done.
Not to be overlooked is the family time we got in just hanging out with Kimmer's nephew Wednesday afternoon and night.... and hanging out with her cousin the rest of the time. It's definitely a treat because we're all around the same age with a lot of shared history, similarly twisted humor, overlapping and eclectic interests, and just that family thing, you know? The way we all are around each other, with each other, that's different from everyone else.
Honorable Mention goes to the Lake Forest Enterprise Car Rental office that took care of us when our Thrifty Car Rental reservation arranged through Expedia imploded. After all, what good is a reservation if there aren't gonna be any cars available for another two hours???
Enterprise got us set up on short notice for much less than Expedia was gonna charge us. Plus, we got a VW Golf to drive. We haven't driven a Golf for maybe two decades when we owned the white one that, before our mechanic told us to retire it, could only be driven in third through fifth gears. No first or second gears which made coming up on stop lights a bit of a nail-biter.
Tumblr media
In the end, we came down to visit Jacquie, to check in on her and make sure all the moving parts of her care are working smoothly, operating in unison. And they are.
So.
As we're making our way home, passing San Francisco a couple hundred miles to our west, we're extremely grateful for the time we had with Jacquie. The experience we had with her.
That she looks good.
That her care is expertly dialed in.
And that she can still conjure a little of the woman we once knew...
And still love.

Route Review: Railriders Cycling: Joseph Branch, Oregon
Tumblr media
Running on the tracks of the Joseph Branch of the Wallowa Union Railroad, Railrider Cycling: Joseph Branch has offered railbike excursions in and around Joseph, Oregon since 2015. The three routes currently on offer collectively form one of three operations in the Northwest established by Kim and Anita Metlen, the pioneers of organized railbiking in Oregon and Washington. I rode the two routes described below on the weekend of June 16th and 17th, 2019, they have already added another.
Vitals
Phone: (541) 786-6149 or (541) 605-8295
Website: https://jbrailriders.com/
Check-in Locations
Jospeh to Enterprise: 501 W Alder Street, Joseph, OR
Minam to Wallawa and Minam to Rondowa: 72601 Highway 82, Minam, OR
The Site
Railrider Cycling: Joseph Branch offers three separate and distinct rides, each on a regular schedule.
Tumblr media
Check-in for the Joseph to Enterprise ride is at a baby-barn office on the edge of Joseph (see Travel Notes below for more details), where I was greeted by the Site Manager Robert Nichols and a Guide named Marshall, a true local whose family also offers horseback excursions in the surrounding mountains.
The Minam to Wallowa ride starts from a turnoff along Oregon Route 82, beside the Minam Store outfitter. I was the only rider on the day I pedalled this route, and my guide Zane was a young, fit football player just out of high school. We surely broke the course record that day.
Since my time there, they’ve added a third route from Minam to Rondowa, running in the opposite direction as the Minam to Wallowa ride.
As noted above, the three routes described here are part of a larger family of railbike tours founded by Kim and Anita Metlen, who deserve great admiration for the work they’ve done to promote cycling and recreation in the Northwest.
The Site Manager Robert Nichols notes that, “our branch options are so much fun because they are such a simple and enjoyable way to get away from it all. A few minutes of pedaling and you can escape the day to day craziness and enter into peaceful wilderness.”
The Routes
The Joseph to Enterprise 12-mile (19.3 km) round-trip runs through open farmland surrounded by the snow-capped Wallowa Mountians. The Minam to Wallowa 26-mile (42 km) round-trip runs through the Wallowa River canyon and includes a lunch break in Wallowa. On each route, riders can expect to see local fauna; I saw osprey, killdeer, deer, and snakes.

Tumblr media
(Minam to Wallawa)
The line was initiated in 1890 by the Oregon Railway Extensions Company as a branch from the Union Pacific mainline from La Grande to Elgin, then extended to Joseph in 1905-1908 by the Oregon Railway & Navigation Company, totaling 63 miles (101 km). The line was intended to move timber from the dense forests of the region, but passenger service was offered as well. Ownership of the line was eventually transferred by consolidation to the Union Pacific Railroad in steps in 1910 and 1936, which operated mixed freight and passenger service until the 1960s (see the image just below) and freight from local timber operations until it was sold as a shortline to Rio Grande Pacific in 1993. In 2003, Elgin to Joseph tracks came under the ownership of the newly formed Wallowa Union Railroad Authority, which currently oversees freight and Eagle Cap excursion trains and, of course, railbikes.

The Vehicles
Tumblr media
While all of the Railriders Cycling sites use a variant of the Railriders aluminum-framed and polyurethane-wheeled concept, Joseph Branch stands out in that they only run two-seater tandem vehicles. Site Manager Robert Nichols described some of the modifications they made to the original design, which are generally found in the nuts-and-bolts details providing increased reliability with decreased maintenance. Robert also notes that, “our retractable seatbelts are really handy, and...our brakes and the placement of where we have the handle works well and is convenient for our guests.”
See the image below of the Joseph to Enterprise guide vehicle, which has been outfitted with electric assist (compare to the vehicles at the Skunk Train). Also of interest is that Railriders Cycling sourced their own wheels. When writing about railbiking in Buffalo Creek, West Virginia, I noted that they had replaced the front wheels with cast-iron Speeder wheels to prevent them from climbing up the tracks and derailing in tight curves. This was accomplished on the Minam to Wallowa route by molding a harder compound of polyurethane (below in orange).

Travel Notes
I visited Joseph as part of a trip through the Northwest, from the Amtrak stop in Pasco, Washington and the neighboring Tri-Cities and inland port on the Columbia River. While Greyhound offers service to Joseph, neither transit nor cycling fit into my tight weekend schedule, so I opted to travel the 292-mile (470 km) round trip by rental car. The scenery along the ride was impressive, through farmlands, forest, high-desert scrub, around the the majestic Nine Canyon Wind Farm, and ultimately along the tracks of the Joseph Branch.
Joseph, formally a city of population 1,081 (what we’d call a hamlet in NY), is at the core of a region rich in outdoor activity, including hiking and horseback riding in the Wallowa Mountains, boating in Wallowa Lake, and fishing and kayaking on local rivers. I also saw rodeo grounds by the start of the railbike tour. The city caters well to visitors and includes art galleries, cafes and beerhalls and was recognized by the New York Times as the Oregon town to “try next.” From experience, I can recommend the Stein Distillery and the Jennings Hotel, which I booked on AirBnB.
6 miles (10 km)  south of Joseph is is the must-see, must-do, must-ride Walowa Lake Tramway aerial cable car 3700 ft (1128 meter) ascent to the top of Mount Howard. Beyond the outdoor restaurant atop one can find paths leading to views of the lake and surrounding mountains, plus joyful creatures looking for treats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in the Tri-Cities, I enjoyed cycling on the paved trails along the Columbia River around Clover Island in Kennewick, Washington. I left the area on the Amtrak Empire Builder to Portland, overlooking the impressive staircase of hydroelectric dams on the  Columbia River.

Day 287: Saturday October 14, 2017 - “Wow-Wallowa”
I had three destinations on my checklist starting the day - Joseph, OR, Hells Canyon, and if possible, land in Bend.   An ambitious ramble plan that would circle the state or Oregon and take me through some beautiful new roads.   A long day of driving indeed but not a single interstate.... and I got it all > Fall color, mountain snows, slippery roads, twisty-turny-videogame-esque roads, wildlife, and even a car camp.   The world outside my windshield - doing what makes me feel strong.
Rolled into Oregon about 10 minutes into my drive and headed down South then East crossing over the Blue Mountains.  Beautiful blue sky day, but it was obvious that over night a big ole wet snow had fallen up there.  A beautiful fun winter drive through the Blues to start my Saturday out looking for Joseph.   Found and followed the Wallowa River as it cut through some farm country, then a river canyon that I imagine must have had great fishing as each little village had a fly fishing shop.  When I popped out around Enterprise, the big snowy mountains up above declared that this was the sacred valley of the Nez Perce Indians that had been so helpful to Lewis & Clark....   felt like stepping back into history by the time I rolled into the small artsy town named after Chief Joseph.  Found a little coffee shop and camped out for a couple hours to get some work done.   The trees were all red and yellow, and snow on the ground, and bronze statues that they are known for literally on every corner.  South of the artsy small village was the old Indian burial ground where Chief Joseph was buried.   The peaceful friendly Indians were at least done right by a community here that respected their legacy and past by keeping it all local and small.   So much history to understand and reconcile at the top of Wallowa Lake. I was honored to have come to visit and spend the morning here.  I had come here hoping to ride the Tram to the top of the sacred mountain, but it was closed for the season so after exploring around, I was back on the road.
I could go East, I could go West - it was all up to me to decide.   I knew shooting for Hell’s Canyon would make for a long day....headed in the wrong direction!   But I scoped out a tiny town down at the mount called Oxbow.  I wondered if I could get down there and my map app said I could follow a National Forest Road 39 up and over the mountains.  I wondered if my little Hyundai rental the gumption to pull it off, but I figured if not I could always turn around and come back to Joseph having tried.....    It took a little over two hours of fun two handed driving but I was up and over and looking down into Hell’s Canyon.  Score.  I made it through this adventurous, rough, snowy, colorful, back road.  Lucky with no service, that I had no issues - I didnt come across many other turkeys out there with the same plan.  I wouldve been on my own for awhile - now thatd be a story to tell.
Once at Oxbow, I found the Snake all swollen and slow moving....  not exactly what I envsioned of Hell’s Canyon.   But there was a sign about a dam about 23 miles on down the road... except my map app didnt even show a road there at all.   So again, I was off on down that road on the Idaho side assuming I could turn back at any point.  As the sun set on the east face of the canyon, and the sky turned red, i wound my way on down the road to find the dam, and the information center down on the Snake where all the rafters and jet boats setout for heavy fast adventure in America’s Deepest Canyon. I set my eye balls on it with the intention to come back some day on a rafting trip.  Seeing those big lava rocked walls, oh yea, I’ll be back.  As the sun-set, I was already a long way from where Id started - crossing over two mountain ranges (Blue and Wallowa) to find myself at the end of the road in Hell’s Canyon.  But now the trip back started.   I etched myself a path best I could with no service from Oxbow back to Bend on a road that would cut me straight through the center of Oregon, and I set out to see how far I could get.
80% of the days drive along 500 miles of winding roads was with no cell service, and no cruise control. Fun!  But also exhausting.   It was some long lonely stretch of roads as I crossed over towns Myron had told me about- I wished I could see them in the day time.  John Day, Halfway, Baker City, Prairie City, Mitchell, Fossil.   Saw a lot of country through my high beams - saw more wildlife than I saw other cars.  Felt like I had central Oregon mostly all to myself this Saturday night.  Plenty of good time for reflection and sense making, planning and unplanning.I really missed AC as I wound my way back to cell service rolling into Bend about 1am.   That was a good long full day of rambling, but I was setup now to catch my flight tomorrow within striking distance of PDX leaving some beautiful road left for me in the morning.  Only thing left to do now was to catch some sleep - no sense getting a hotel for 6 hours, even if it was only 30 degrees.  Pulled into WalMart on this 9 dog night and took my coldest night of car camp.   Putting passions ahead of comfort.   At least I was feeling accomplished with my ramble, and with deep sigh, feeling sigh, I called it a day rolling into the next.
I went to sleep thinking about Chief Joseph and reading up on the Nez Perce some more.  I really liked that tiny town Joseph and the vibe left over there.  I liked that big statue of him there in the center of town with a quote at his feet about a man being free - “Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to talk, think and act for myself — and I will obey every law or submit to the penalty.”   Amen.
Song: Steeldrivers / Chris Stapleton - Where Rainbows Never Die
Quote: “Whenever the white man treats the Indian as they treat each other, then we shall have no more wars. We shall all be alike, brothers of one father and one mother with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the Earth.” ― Chief Joseph

To Idaho or Bust. August 6-7, 2020
The only thing that hadn’t been cancelled with this COVID pandemic so far is the Salmon River rafting trip we’d booked last winter. We were at a Music Makes a Difference event, and a favorite duo of ours, Moors and McCumber we’re performing. We’d been introduced to them at a similar event, hosted by my high school pal Bill Zorr a few years before. Not only did we enjoy their performance, we heard about some trips that they a part of with a group of their fans. Bill was supposed to travel to Ireland with them next month for example! But we also learned they were part of a rafting trip deal in Idaho and had two slots left. The dates worked perfectly for our summer plans so we booked it the next day. Combining music with a multi-day River adventure - what’s not to love?
Since our original 2020 plan included climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in September, we were going to spend 10 days this August with our hiking group in Colorado to get some altitude training in. The rafting trip fit perfectly, so we’d planned to drive to Idaho (in our new SUV that hasn’t yet arrived) and then meet the hiking group in Colorado. Since Tanzania has been pushed off until 2021, we also pushed off the Colorado portion of the trip.
The outfitter, Middle Fork River Expeditions, sent assurance of the COVID precautions they’d put into place, so we booked tickets to Boise on Delta Airlines, using the credits from the April trip to Vegas that had been cancelled.
We left Madison for Boise early Thursday morning, with a couple hour stopover in MSP. We hadn’t been there in awhile and walked our usual loops, marveling at the changes in shops and services. Many gates were closed for renovations during this slack time. But it was eerie how empty the place was, knowing how it should have been bustling with travelers on this Thursday morning in August! Jeff looked at me and asked if we were doing the right thing by traveling. Time will tell.
Easy flight to Boise. The plane only seemed to be half full and we got an upgrade to First Class. Picked up our rental Mitsubishi SUV from Enterprise and before I had the Apple Car Play hooked up we were climbing out of Boise. Easy route, but when 120 miles takes 3 hours that tells you we were up and over a few passes on our way to Stanley. Beautiful drive with ok traffic. The scenery reminded me of bicycling through Washington State - dry, with sage brush on one side of the pass, and tall pines on the other. We passed through several large areas that had burned previously. Ugly and scary, yet the rebirth of the forest is beautiful. We arrived in Stanley about 4pm.
I’d checked out Stanley via google map satellite view, and had expected more of a town. We drove right to our hotel, Mountain Village Resort without realizing we’d bypassed the whole town! We checked in, got settled, then headed to the bar/restaurant for dinner. There we found our favorite Deschutes Brewery “Black Butte Porter,” and a yummy looking menu. As has been our experience now in Northern WI and MN, we found the waitstaff are all wearing masks as are most of the clientele except for when they’re eating or drinking. Has become the norm, and I think that’s great.
After dinner, we walked to explore town, and poked around an outfitters shop and scoped out a few different restaurants- looks like some great options. We saw a guy with packs on his bike (Doug), and stopped and chatted with him a bit. He was quite a character- has done a lot of bike touring all over the world. Just a free spirit that kind of goes with the wind, although he is caretaker for his 92 year old father but his brother is on duty this summer.
Town seemed to have more than its share of free spirits, but also several vacationing families, and young and older couples. The summer help seems to be college-aged kids, not necessarily those on the fringe though as most of them are decked out in Lululemon, and other brand name and not cheap sportswear.
There was a band setting up for a street dance, but we were tired so we strolled back to our hotel.
Friday we were up early and dressed to hike, before heading to the Stanley Baking Company in search of breakfast. The morning was cool, but the sun warmed things up quickly. The view of the morning light on the Sawtooth mountains was beautiful, highlighting a few patches of snow remaining in the saddles. The cafe was very popular so it took awhile to order, but we each had an oatmeal pancake, egg and bacon. And it was so yummy! While we waited, we studied the hiking maps we’d collected last night and chose a trail over the 20+ options within a 20 minute drive.
We’d heard Redfish Lake was beautiful, but the number of people recommending it told us it might be crowded, so we opted for the Alice Lake trail. We turned off Highway 75 and drove two miles down a dusty gravel road. We were surprised to find a full campground and jam packed trailhead parking at the end of the road! We found a spot and hit the trail, a little dismayed by the number of people at first. We saw as many hiking out as in ... most with full packs backpacking for multiple days. We walked along the shore of the gorgeous alpine green Pettit Lake. It was as smooth as glass and reflected the surrounding mountain.
We didn’t get started until 10am, and after about two miles, we realized we hadn’t seen anyone in awhile, and although we were following a trail (or trails), we later learned that we’d missed the river crossing ... confirmed when the official trail crossed back and became wide again. Our bivouacking portion was fun, scrambling over boulder fields, climbing over or ducking under fallen trees, but it slowed us down. We started doing the math and realized we didn’t have time to do the whole 12-mile out and back to Alice Lake. We climbed a few switchbacks and reached 7700 ft elevation and had a great view before we turned back. This time we crossed the creek and made much better time on the way back. Beautiful day and we felt great!
Back in the car, we decided to check out Redfish Lake on our way back. It was a zoo! Not much social distancing going on - crowded beach, lots of boats on the lake. Messed with our mojo and we couldn’t get out of there fast enough! We drove back to Stanley and it seemed a little crazy too - August Friday afternoon traffic jam.
Back to our hotel for shower and nap, before walking back to town for dinner. We had an awesome and relaxing meal on the patio of the Stanley Supper Club.
At 8:30pm we drove to the Middle Fork River Expedition warehouse to meet our guide and fellow travelers. Seems like a great group and we’re excited to get going in the morning! They gave us our waterproof bags to pack our gear, so we headed back to do that. Ample space in the bag - should have brought my pillow!

Chatsworth Estate Holiday Cottages review: A cosy cottage with stately allure
Hide away deep in the rural belly of the Chatsworth Estate
Waking up to languorous views over the silent Calton Lees valley, air so fresh you can almost drink it, is the norm at Pingle Cottage (sleeps 4) and the adjacent Rye Croft Cottage (sleeps 6). Twenty-five holiday rentals make up Chatsworth Estate Holiday Cottages overall, but just nine are in the Chatsworth Collection. Each property is unique, yet united by their welcoming Prussian blue doors, at which you can turn the key of your very own sandstone sanctuary and enjoy complete privacy and seclusion on one of Britain’s most prestigious, now public estates.
Every property on the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s estate features a distinctive Prussian blue paint shade, because the present Duke prefers the colour to the previous green

The Chatsworth Estate in the Peak District has been the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and home of the Cavendish family for almost 500 years, so its walls and fields are bursting with stories of feud, friendship, boom and bust. Visiting the estate today gives you a sense of how these vast, historic English estates fit into a modern world. Today the estate plays an important role as an employer, encompassing 120 tenanted farms, as well as a place of recreation, where visitors are mostly free to wander and explore wherever they please.
Chatsworth Estate Holiday Cottages is one of the estate’s most exciting enterprises. Each barn, cottage and farmhouse has been thoughtfully and generously renovated, and this is evident in both great and small ways. The log burner at the centre of the living space in Pingle is a force to be reckoned with – no sub-zero temperature drop outside will intrude on your stay with this flame-thrower around. If this wasn’t enough, your toes are guaranteed to be toasty thanks to underfloor heating that make the natural materials more than bearable. Wooden floors, exposed stone walls and beams and what are most probably original flagstone steps all give the barn its character, while original and well-chosen artworks, fabrics and comfortable but quirky furniture give it timeless style. It was obviously a much-loved project and it shows.
Pingle cottage was a spacious living area centred around its secret weapon, an impressively effective log burner
All of the Chatsworth Estate Holiday Cottages are fully equipped with everything you will need to hunker down for a long weekend of complete peace and quiet. But if the weather is good, nature calls. Grab the well-thumbed OS map from the bookshelf and lace your boots.

To reach Chatsworth House from Pingle, follow the tinkling tributary down the dirt drive (the cottage’s only car access, so 4x4s are advised). It will deposit you in the lush green basin of the River Derwent, where nestled in its crook is the golden egg of Chatsworth House. It really is that easy. A whole day can easily be spent here. As part of your cottage rental, you’ll receive one complimentary ticket to the house and gardens. Even better, during winter, guests staying on the estate can take the limited availability opportunity to go behind the scenes of this great house and learn more of its ‘Secrets and Surprises’, with a series of private guided tours of this name running during January and February.
READ MORE: Secrets and surprises: Special tours of Chatsworth House
Exploring beyond the gilded heart of the 350,000-acre estate, however, is a must. Climb up behind Chatsworth House to Hunting Tower (sleeps 4), another holiday let, with arguably the best views of the lot: you can even glimpse Chatsworth itself just below the lip of its 400-foot clifftop perch. Continuing through Stand Wood and in between Emperor lake and Swiss Lake, you’ll happen across Swiss Cottage (sleeps 6) in an enviably secluded wood. It almost looks as if it has made out of gingerbread, and Hansel and Gretel might run out of the door at any moment. One of the 6th Duke of Devonshire’s home improvements, it was designed to be an ‘eye-catcher’, admired on carriage rides or walks around the estate.
Beyond the wood is a stretch of wild moorland. A good day’s romp with panoramic views can be had between Robin Hood and Hob Hurst’s House. Continue on down the road to the Devonshire Arms at Beeley, a small honey-coloured village, to refuel. The Chatsworth Estate’s longstanding influence means that you feel very much a part of the community there. Though many locals frequent The Devonshire Arms, those staying at the rented properties surrounding it all flock here for food too. Not surprising, really: Generous portions, rich flavours and classic desserts are just what you need after a long, bracing walk. To sweeten the deal, when cottage guests dine at the hotels or inns in The Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants Collection (for example The Cavendish Hotel, Baslow or The Devonshire Arms at Beeley or Pilsley, they receive a 10 per cent discount on food and beverages). A short walk through an orchard leads you home from Beeley. Or you can stock up on groceries at the farm shop in Pilsley and cook up a locally-sourced storm in the evening. You can get Chatsworth meat, poultry and game here, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, or arrange for a hamper of essentials (bread, milk, cakes and bakes) to be waiting in your cottage on your arrival day.
Rest and recuperate at the friendly Devonshire Arms at Beeley
For those lucky enough to stay longer than a couple of days, it’s worth venturing to the nearby Derbyshire Dales to explore a different kind of valley. Lathkill Dale, for example, bears the scars of its industrial past with grace and makes for a varied walk, plunging deep into the river’s other-wordy undergrowth, once worked in daily by miners, before climbing steeply back onto immaculate pastures. Buxton and Bakewell are also in the vicinity and well worth a visit, if only to try an authentic cherry and almond tart of the same name.
As the sun disappears behind the forest on the hill and you enclose yourselves inside Pingle for another night, the sound of the resident Tawny Owl will whit-woo you to sleep where you’ll dream of unspoilt pastoral life – only to find it’s a reality when you awake the next morning.
You can browse all of the Chatsworth Estate Cottages Cottages on their website. Their collection grows every year: Dunsa Cottage and Bubnell Barn are the newest additions, available to rent from 24 April and beyond.

Even so, if it really is only been a couple several hours or if you at any time have an additional incident, here is what you should really do the following time from the begin.
First, take a search all-around and establish if you or everyone, are damage. If so, taking actions like seeking to stop further more harm or decline of blood are the most significant thing you can do. Even if some other driver induced you to be hurt, it really is just great manners to assist the other driver if they are damage. They may possibly even be so thankful that they acknowledge their fault to you. The worst thing you can do is get indignant or begin a combat.
Next, make absolutely sure all people is safe from being hurt further more. If you are in the center of site visitors, and you are dizzy, sit down absent from site visitors. If your automobile is a site visitors hazard and you have incident warning devices like flares or triangles, set them out on the highway to warn other drivers and get absent from the car or truck. Enable the law enforcement an other crisis personnel look into the scene with the cars in location and transfer them much more properly at a later point.
3rd, get in touch with the law enforcement. Accident experiences are extremely handy if the law enforcement will do such a report. Enable the law enforcement know you are hurt instantly. Response the law enforcement queries honestly. But if you are dazed or puzzled, let them know you have to have professional medical treatment and solution only what you sense absolutely sure about. Bear in mind, your statements can and will be used against you if you acknowledge fault, and it will be as well late and as well fishy to later say you did not know what you had been saying at the scene. Police know that your ideal recollection is instantly following an incident.
Fourth, get the other driver's information including their names, addresses, driver's license quantities, make and design of their cars, license plate quantities, and their insurance plan enterprise title and plan range. If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses and telephone quantities as perfectly. If the other driver makes any admissions of fault, produce individuals down as perfectly.
Fifth, if you have a digicam on your mobile telephone or in the car or truck and you are not as well hurt, take some photographs of the cars and the scene. If you are unable to do it appropriate absent, do it following you are unveiled from the clinic.
Sixth, if you are damage, receive professional medical treatment. Never decline the ambulance or clinic examination to preserve your insurance plan enterprise income or to be stoic. Acquire your valuables out of your car or truck if you can and get checked out at the clinic. If you are not damage, don't get treatment you don't have to have. Even so, don't forget, following an incident, you may possibly sense a rush of adrenaline that will cause you to only begin emotion symptoms of pain a couple several hours later. If you have a wellbeing system that requires you to receive permission first, get in touch with them and obtain out where by you are permitted to find treatment.
Seventh, get in touch with a great Southern California vehicle incident law firm as quickly as you have had your preliminary treatment, so the Southern California lawyer can collect other significant evidence and stop the insurance plan enterprise from taking edge of you and acquiring such items as recorded statements that you sense good, when a lot of of your symptoms have however to manifest by themselves. A great Southern California vehicle incident law firm can preserve you from earning a wonderful offer of faults and can shoulder substantially of the hassle of knowing what to do about car or truck repairs, car or truck rentals, professional medical treatment, witness statements and the like. If you assume you will preserve income by not obtaining a Southern California lawyer, assume once more. A great Southern California vehicle incident law firm can practically usually receive substantially better settlements, receive reductions of professional medical charges and insurance plan liens and stop you from earning pricey faults. Also, most Southern California vehicle incident lawyers progress expenditures of acquiring law enforcement experiences, professional medical documents and the like and are paid and reimbursed for these expenditures only out of any settlement.
Eight, you will have to have to report the incident to your insurance plan enterprise, but considering that they will want to take a recorded assertion from you, just like any other driver's insurance plan enterprise, it really is great tips to keep a Southern California lawyer first. And if the other driver did not have insurance plan, don't forget that it is your personal insurance plan enterprise that will be your adversary. You will also have to have to report the incident to the Division of Motor Motor vehicles and your Southern California law firm can give you the sort for this.
Ninth, do not agree to settle your assert privately with the person at fault for the incident. This practically never ever is effective out to your edge. Never agree not to get in touch with the law enforcement. Police experiences that establish the fault for an incident are golden. Your settlement to not require the law enforcement only affords an opportunity for the other driver to improve his tale and blame you when the law enforcement will no for a longer period look into the incident.
Tenth, don't pay out a site visitors ticket without a combat if you were not at fault or agree to accept a small payment for your automobile repairs without knowing that the quantity will in simple fact cover the expense of all the repairs.
If you've had a Southern California vehicle incident in Riverside County, San Bernardino County, or in the Coachella Valley, on the Central Coast or in the Imperial Valley or cities such as San Diego, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Orange County, Yorba Linda, Tustin, Lake Forest, Fountain Valley, Rancho Santa Margarita, Newport Seaside, Anaheim, Irvine, Huntington Seaside, Corona del Mar, Laguna Seaside, Santa Ana, Orange, Fullerton, Costa Mesa, or any where in Southern California, we have the expertise and assets to be your Southern California Vehicle Accident Attorney and your Southern CA Vehicle Accident Lawyer.

Colorado. Sept 28 - Oct 3, 2018
Glorious mini-vacation to Colorado. While we’d both been here many times before, it’s been 15+ years since we spent much time in the mountain, and the Colorado Rockies are a particular place where my soul feels at home.
We arrived in Denver early Friday afternoon. It was cloudy and cool and we added layers as we stood outside waiting for our rental car at Enterprise where it seemed they were just randomly assigning whichever car came in, regardless of what you’d reserved! We ended up with a new Subaru Outback, which worked perfectly for our adventure.
We navigated around Denver and headed west on I-70. Much more development over the years, with a Starbucks at every exit ... but other than that, the road hadn’t changed since the days when I’d drive my Saab with the studded snow tires up to the mountains to ski.
After the tunnel, we headed north on Hwy 9 to Hwy 40 - new territory for me and amazing scenery. Near Kremling, there were signs about “fire traffic,” and eventually we passed a camp set up for fire workers... and further down the road we saw the fire in the distance and smelled smoke (learned the next day that ranches had been evacuated and locals were praying for snow to put an end to the smoldering and uncertainty). We passed the “Headwaters of the Colorado River,” where it looked so different than the raging cold river we experienced at the bottom of the Grand Canyon last October! We passed through Steamboat Springs, stopping for Frappes and snacks, then onto Craig. At that point we were pushing daylight, and seeing lots of antelope and deer along the road so we passed through Craig so we’d arrive at our VRBO cabin before dark. We took a few minutes to get settled, then headed slowly back to the Walmart in Craig to load up on groceries for our stay ... careful to avoid the deer on highway!
Jeff’s sister Barb and husband Allan were supposed to join us at the cabin, but a family illness made them cancel their trip.
We got back to the cabin and were baking a pizza when our VRBO owner, Sandra, popped in to ensure all was ok. It was really a fabulous setting. No cell signal or WiFi, which always takes awhile to get used to, but is so relaxing!
SATURDAY
We awoke to a glorious am. At first light, there were mule deer out in front - fun to watch close up, and they knew we were in there! We had breakfast and went out to explore the property with an adventurous hike.
The purpose for this trip was the wedding of grand-nephew Tanner Issacs and Karissa, at the “Y Lazy S Ranch” just north of Craig CO. We arrived early to increase the opportunity to socialize with Jeff’s other sister, Jan and her family ... other than the WIND, it was a perfect day in an ideal setting. Besides the extended family, it was really fun to socialize with Tanners group of friends from a Dude Ranch where he’d worked during college, and others. Karissa is from a ranch in the Craig area, and we learned that many Greek have settled here, and they specialized in raising sheep. The wedding had a cowboy / Greek theme, with gyros for wedding dinner! It was a really fun experience!
SUNDAY
Jan and husband Dave planned on getting an early start for their drive back to MN, so we made a plan on our own (we’ll see them at another wedding in two weeks). We’d asked VRBO owner Sandra about hiking options and she suggested Trappers Lake - her information packet said 1-2 hours drive, Google maps said 2 hours, but a different route than what she’d suggested.
So we set out following her directions, a little scary without any cell service! After about 5 miles, the road turned to gravel (and remained gravel the whole time). But the scenery was out of this world as we followed the Willams Fork river, past beautiful ranches and rolling aspen covered hills.
We entered the Flat Top Wilderness Area (third largest in Colorado, least visited) and crested Ripple Creek Pass at 12,000ft. Trappers Lake is 300 acres, sitting at 9600 ft. In the summer of 2002, over 23,000 acres of the White River and Routt National Forests were burned by the “Big Fish” and “Lost Lake” fires, which we didn’t know - so it really altered the kind of hike we thought we’d be doing, but it was amazing. We saw just two other couples - so having a place like that to ourselves was a little eerie. We hiked about 5.5 miles around the lake, with a good measure of up and down. The affects of the altitude weren’t too bad - just made for a slower pace.
We returned to the cabin via the “google maps” route, further, but still two hours, and only about 15 minutes of gravel road. Since we’d taken the option for the Sirius XM on the car, we were able to listen to the Ryder Cup finish on the drive back to the cabin ... and we arrived safely before dark.
MONDAY
We were up a little earlier, packed up and headed East. We found a cafe in Steamboat, where we had a second breakfast and then did some shopping at Lights (it’s like their own Wall Drug). We both bought new cowboy boots, along with some fancy contraptions to help get them on and off! I really enjoyed Steamboat and could spend more time there!
We hit the road, stopping for a photo at Rabbit Ears pass. On our way over on Friday, Jeff recalled a family road trip from MN to CA, well, he was 3 so it’s more that he recalls the stories of that road trip, and a photo of them at Rabbit Ears Pass with snow on the ground.
Down to Kremling past the fire zone again, then headed to Granby and the western gate of Rocky Mountain National Park (first visit for us both). We stopped at the visitors center and got intel on hiking for tomorrow, then started the drive to Trail Ridge Road - up and up and up and up. We had the radio tuned to the Brewer-Cub play off game - marveled by the technology that allows us to listen to that in such a remote location! Along the way we saw a coyote jogging along the road, and came upon cars parked along the road and people jumping out with cameras (same scene you’ll see at Yellowstone and Glacier), but this one was an “Elk Jam,” and he was a beauty with a large rack!
We stopped at an Alpine visitors center and took a walk to the lookout (after digging out our puffy jackets, hats and gloves). The temperature went from 80 at the gate to 45 on the top! At 12,000 feet, the climb to the lookout was tough, and the clouds were coming in fast, which means it wasn’t much of a view, but it was awesome just the same.
Back in the car just as the rain started, and we continued a harrowing drive along the ridge line ... sure seemed to me that the CCC could have installed some of those great rock guardrails! Was glad to have Jeff driving and I could just work on breathing. When we got down to the meadow area we saw a few elk. We drove on a stretch of the road where it’s closed from 5p to 7a due to the number of Elk present!
Out of the park and into Estes Park to search out accommodations for the next two nights. We settled for a hotel based on location - could walk to town, and also view and hear the Elk on the adjacent golf course! Let me just say that “bugleing” sounds like a squeaky gate ... not what I’d expected! We got settled and wandered into town. I’d forgotten to pack rain gear and I know how fast the weather changes in the mountains as we saw today!
I found a new rain jacket, and we checked out some other stores and restaurants, settling to eat at Claire’s, which was a really great meal. Stopped at the Safeway for bananas and yogurt so we could get an early start tomorrow.
TUESDAY
We did get up and going early - With a quick stop at Starbucks we were back in the park before my latte cooled. Destination Bear Lake Trailhead (9449 ft); traffic was light, deer were plentiful and the drive was beautiful. From this trailhead, there are multiple choices of hikes for varying abilities. We set off for a tougher one to ditch the crowd that was already forming - mission accomplished and we saw less than 20 people until we got back closer to the trailhead where we intersected with an easier trail.
We did an 8.5 mile loop: Alberta Falls, Mills Lake, Lake Haiyaha, Dream Lake (moose sighting), Emerald Lake and back down to Bear Lake. Total elevation gain of 1628 ft. Beautiful day, great temperature and we had all the right gear with the changing conditions. We had just a little rain, nothing like the day before but I was still glad for my new jacket!
Returned to our hotel about 3pm, and there were many people adjacent to our hotel (I mean in the parking lot outside our window) watching the Elk ... apparently it’s normal for them to take over the golf course at this time of year. There were about 100, and they were in various groups. And the males were strutting about, hollering and chasing off smaller males, and collecting their females into little groups. The greens and tees were all fenced off, as was most of the landscaping. But in front of our room, the fence had been pushed in and a guy was herding his girls onto the practice putting green. It was hysterical.
We showered and headed back to town to celebrate our hike with margaritas and Mexican fare. Then back to watch a little more Elk shenanigans!
WEDNESDAY
All night long we listened to Elk shenanigans ... but by the time we packed up and got ready this am, our little herd has disbanded and moved on to a different part of the golf course.
We drove to Longmont and stopped at our favorites kind of local cafe for breakfast. Then early to the airport to start cleaning out the 400 or so emails we’d each accumulated before flying home.
Awesome adventure!
