Frollo review-Musical edition
Part 3 of my 'NDdP musical reviews'.Now it's Dom Claude Frollo's turn.
Just like in my previous reviews,i'll only be talking about the original casts.
Please keep in mind that these are only my opinions.
Let's go.
Daniel Lavoie (original French and English production)
Tumblr media
Personally i adore Daniel. His voice is amazing, his vocal control is godly and he himself is just amazing.Although he lacks stage presence and is a bit stiff,he's also one of my favourite Frollos. His powerful voice and emotion it caries makes up for his lack of visual performance. When it comes down to visal acting,Daniel certainly acts more with his face-especially his eyes. His eyes portray his emotions perfectly.Frollo's lust, his inner conflict and his mini-mental breakdown when Esmeralda rejects him.All of it can be seen in Lavoie's eyes.Too bad the rest of his body was so stiff.Everything that i've said about the French version can also be said about the English version.
2. Vittorio Matteucci (original Italian production)
Tumblr media
Ah,Vittorio. One of the best,if not the best Frollo out there.Vittorio's Frollo has it all: stage presence, voice, vocal control, amazing and convincing acting.Italian version of Frollo was full of passion and overall insanity. And i loved it!You could tell that Matteucci put a lot of effort into his performance, both visually and vocally.Even though i prefer Daniel's voice,Vittorio's voice was also amazing to listen to.It caried a lot of emotion in it.His facial expressions were also very hilarious and exaggerated, but always on point and perfect for the scene in which he's in.Also,i really like his makeup (even though it makes him look like he just came out of an old cartoon or comic book). They tried their best to make him look older and unattractive, but i myself feel like it somehow makes him even more visually appealing (same as Daniel's makeup)...
3. Enrique Sequero (original Spanish production)
Tumblr media
(The quality is bad,sorry😔)
I liked Enrique's performance. He has an amazing voice that displays a sea of different emotions. My personal favourite numbers of his are "Belle" and "Me vas a destruir" ("Tu vas me détruire" in French).Just like with the Spanish Quasimodo and Esmeralda,i couldn't find any visuals of Sequero's performance either. However,i'd like to compliment the Spanish production for being bold enough to make Frollo bald (no pun intended). It makes him the closest to the book version of Frollo (appearance wise)...Even though Hugo's Frollo wasn't complitely bald but rather balding.
4. Александр Маракулин (original Russian production)
Tumblr media
(Ignore the rose😅)
There is little to be said about Маракулин's performance, except that it was fantastic. His voice, his facial expressions, his vocal control, his stage presence, his emotions...I loved it.I also really like his makeup. It's not as extreme and cartoony as Vittorio's,but it's also not as unnoticable as Daniel's or Enrique's.

One lovely detail in Madrid 2004. This is the transition between the end of Gus’ scene and ‘Skimbleshanks’.
Rumpelteazer’s reaction to Gus as he leaves makes her seem like the chief mourner - or rather, like a child just realising the meaning of loss. Deuteronomy sings the opening line of Skimbleshanks’ song as if it’s a ‘here, this will cheer you up’. It’s often Rumpelteazer who does this - sometimes Victoria or Jemima - but this is one of the best views we have of it!
(Description/discussion under the cut.)
Update: it worked!
She comes forward toward the end and she and Jellylorum frame Gus as he sings his final lines - but Jellylorum is standing and sure of herself, and Rumpelteazer is small, on all fours, and lifting her paw and curving her body in a way that suggests uncertainty, even distress, very different to her physicality when she’s busy being one half of the chaos duo.
Her grief makes Deuteronomy stand up and come forward to comfort her, and then suggest Skimbleshanks. Of course that works and she picks up on it - and Pouncival spins with excitement as well, as the mood changes for everybody.
It’s a neat way to handle that transition between the pathos of Gus and Skimbleshanks’... well, for lack of a better word, jollity. But it’s fascinating that it’s Rumpelteazer who’s chosen for it, and not a more obvious choice like Victoria or Jemima or Jellylorum.
I didn’t include Mungojerrie’s reaction in this gifset since we only see it in wideshot and the resolution is very low on these VOBs. He shows a similar young and uncertain demeanour - but he isn’t worried about Gus. He’s just focussed on Rumpelteazer - lifting his forepaw and putting it down, unsure about whether to move forward to her. You can see it in (slightly) lower res on youtube. (Suggesting that he doesn’t share the same relationship with Gus - or just isn’t as close, or hasn’t yet realised what she’s realising about dementia/death/loss?)
(But I might have to gif that after all because one thing I noticed just in fetching that timestamp: Tugger standing near him and exchanging a look with him as the mood changes. There’s a few other moments in this production between those two where Mungojerrie seems to be admiring him or trying to get him to engage/play, so that looks to me like a moment of ‘okay, fine, I will stand next to you and make sure you’re okay while still pretending I don’t care’. Tugger, you softie.)

In which Munkustrap is (temporarily) proud of his boys, Mungojerrie is tiny, and Tumblebrutus loses his hat.
Madrid 2004: Jack Rebaldi as Munkustrap. The line is: Hugo Riveros Delporte as Mungojerrie, Andrés Pérez Lopez as Pouncival, Santiago Cano as Coricopat, Enrique Sequero as Gus, Pepe Muñoz as Plato, Juan Carlos Verdú as Tumblebrutus.)

If you don’t know qué es un gato jellicle, Jack Rebaldi’s Munkustrap and his beautiful face are appalled and disappointed in you.
(Madrid 2004 - also, Enrique Sequero as Gus)

Some quality bleps in the Madrid production. Thanks Tugger, Mistoffelees, and of course the grand master of the playful blep, Munkustrap himself.
.... now there seems to be somebody missing... if only I could figure out who... hmmmmmmmm....
@uppastthejelliclemoon made a list of which cats have the best bleps but clearly omitted some important points. See also the Bleps of the John-Tugger.
Edu del Prado as Rum Tum Tugger, Jack Rebaldi as Munkustrap, Victor Ullate Roche as Mistoffelees, Javier Toca Juara as Alonzo / Rumpus Cat, Enrique Sequero as Growltiger, Laura Rodríguez as Cassandra, Gorane Markinez as Griddlebone, Pedro Ruy-Blas as Deuteronomy, Alberto Sánchez as Skimbleshanks.
