Daichi- sometimes its okay to take breaks and enjoy yourself!! I know you are the reliable friend and i know you love to think your life has linear direction but baby!! You are young!! Enjoy yourself and go fucking crazy every once in a while!! you dont need to be mature 24/7!!

Suga- bro as a suga kinnie im so fucking sorry. You know you’re hot- im so glad you do, but start treating yourself like it!! Its one thing to be sweet to everyone and lift them up but another to do it in place of caring for yourself! Its unsexy to neglect your own needs. Drink some water. I love u.

Asahi- are you in therapy? No? Maybe you should look into that… please stop being afraid of taking up space. U are an angel and everything you say is 100% worthy, interesting and valid. Its alright to be anxious and stay inside sometimes too- do what makes YOU happy, but take care of yourself too okay

Noya- YES i love ur energy but PLEASE STOP NEGLECTING RESPONSIBILITY!!! I mean this from a place of sweetness in my HEART i love you so much and i know youre gonna regret not making that phonecall/doing that essay in the long run. The sooner you do it the sooner its over.

Tanaka- being the comic relief friend is not a full time job my love. Its okay to have your off days- if you were happy 24/7 you would be a robot. Are u a robot? No u arent. I love u. Also please drink some water

Ennoshita- yes i know gifted kid burnout shit is hard i know but do you know how proud everyone is of you? Sometimes you need to take a little step back from life and just inhale, and then exhale again. You dont have to be productive to be successful. I love u

Kageyama- stop clenching your jaw/ tensing your eyebrows right now. Also relax your shoulders. You arent going anywhere bby. I know you hate it when people look at you, but it doesnt always mean theyre out to get you. You are loved, and you have the potential to be loved by everyone- rbf or not

Hinata- i think nows the time you start to stand up for yourself when people call you annoying/ ignore your ideas. I know you just wanna do what makes everyone happy ,and you dont mind when people use you as the butt of the joke, but you deserve sm more than that. Also have a good cry every once in a while

Tsukki- bro its okay to show emotion do you know that? I rlly hope you know that. I know you were raised in an environment that stunted that for you. Now its okay to breathe and its okay to love and its okay to cry. You dont have to feel guilty for it. You dont have a limited stock of tears. I know you like to be chill all the time but youre neglecting ur emotional needs bb

Yamaguchi- you need to look at yourself and say im proud of you. Also, stop comparing yourself to your friends. I know you feel like you’ll always be behind your peers because of your younger years but the only person you need to focus on is you. You’re the only person you’ve got for the rest of your life- so love yourself <3

Kuroo- i know you love to pick your friends up, i really do. You’re an angel and youre the friend everyone loves and needs. But you run away from your own issues way too much. You probably have like 3538 hobbies and thats great!! But you need a self care day, and maybe to confront your demons so they dont outrun you. Love u

kenma - open your curtains and let some sunlight in. also drink water. The sanctity of your bed s lovely, i know, but its okay to sit outside and just take in your surroundings every once in a while. Its also okay to have “childish” hobbies. Stuffed animals? Animal crossing? Thats fucking hot babe dont feel embarrassed for it

Lev- write things down. Literally make reminders on your phone and stop being late to everything. I know you dont mean it and i know you hate taking responsibility for your actions but PLEASE itll save you sm stress. Also stop feeling bad because you lack common sense. Its sexy.

Bokuto- validation from friends is really fun but sometimes its even better to validate yourself!! Instead of asking what people would think of you, look in the mirror and tell yourself you are a fucking hot bitch. also , never stop validating your friends. They love it, even if they pretend they dont

Akaashi- the weight of the world is not yours to bear my love. I love the way you romanticise the little things in life like books and music, but remember that its okay to have lazy days too. You dont always have to be aesthetically pleasing to survive. Also, accept affection from your friends. They adore you.

Konoha- bb u need to breathe. You dont have a time limit to do everything on your bucketlist. You dont have to go out every night to have a good social life. You constantly feel like you need to have the cookie cutter teenage life, ad beat yourself up when you miss the mark. But honestly? Noone has that life. Its a societal construct. Work at ur own pace

Oikawa- go to therapy. I dont know how many times you need to hear this but you dont need to be perfect all the time. I know you dont believe me but im so serious. Also, not everyones out to hurt you. You dont need to prove youre better than people- theres room at the top for everyone. Just prove that you’re good enough for yourself

Iwa- showing affection doesnt make you weak!! Also, you should take up a hobby to deal with those anger issues you may or may not have. You bottle your emotions up then act surprised when they explode. This is not healthy behaviour bb, remember that you are loved even if you show love through eye-rolls and playful smacking

Mattsun- first of all if you kin mattsun DM me immediately and ill sort the wedding. Second of all, your life isnt gonna write itself bb. I know you love to “go with the flow of things” but sometimes you gotta steer the wheel yourself to get that perfect life youre trying to manifest. Also, please dont do drugs. I know you want to, but please dont. I love u

Makki- stop joking about yur unresolved traumas and face them like a bad bitch, i know your cool, i know your hot and i know your fashion sense is off the fucking charts but oh my GOD you need to confront your issues ASAP before they throw you into a breakdown

Kunimi- i know you thought you’d be dead by now and you’re living life on autopilot bc you have no idea what to do with it but babe. You made it this far. Look at you. Im so proud of you and you should be so proud of you too. Youve got this more than anyone. Dont give up now and stay safe

Futakuchi- you are so sexy i know but you are literally 1 step away from turning into a train wreck. I know adrenaline is hot and i know you like to pretend you dont care about life but oh my god. Please dont text your ex. Please dont do that dangerous thing that could get you in trouble. breATHE BABE

Aone - you are a strong believer that a hug from this man could cure your depression. Me too. Maybe invest in a djungelsnog bear from ikea. Surround yourself with stuffed animals and soft things and never stop being kind to people.

Koganegawa- never stop trying to befriend people!! If people think you’re weird for it then that just shows how close minded they are. You are so approachable and people appreciate you so much. Also, the most trustworthy person in the world. Treat yourself to chicken nuggets every once in a while.

Ushijima- its okay to take breaks. Yes you’re deadset on your goals and yes you’re successful as hell, but sometimes a night off with a friend or family is all you need. You close yourself off and noone really knows what to say to you bc of it. Its okay to share your personality- it doesnt make you weak

Tendou- people who look at you weird are cowards. Youre hot. You show support to your friends to make up for the lack of support people showed you when you were younger. I know you think you’ve never moved on from your past but i swear you have. Such a cool person. I love u

Semi- add my number and date me. Tumblr 2014 is your comfort zone and you probably developed serious issues cus of it. Please stop romanticising your sadness and going back to that time period everytime you need a coping mechanism.

Goshiki- ik you have a praise kink but you need to praise urself baby. You are doing a good job!! Your hard work is enough, even if it doesnt pay off! Youre so resilient and you try so hard, it makes you the best person to be around. You have nothing to prove to anyone, i swear

Atsumu- stop trying to be funny it doesnt work no im jk. Who cares if people dont like you? Who cares if you embarrass yourself in public/? YOU SHOULDNT. You dont have to be a pillar of friendship or reliability for everyone, and you dont have to wear a happy mask all the time. Let yourself fall down sometimes

Osamu- you like to be taken care of and you deserve it so much. Sometimes you have no motivation for anything at all and thats okay!! People grow at different rates- let your independence guide you to where you need to be. Dont take shit from anyone

Kita- your soul is literally like a lake on a summers day. You are so kind, so patient, so peaceful and so supportive… to everyone but yourself. You need to treat yourself like you treat everyone else, and stop letting people walk all over you because you see the good in them smh

Suna- its okay to be soft. Being soft is strong as hell sometimes babe. You love to laugh at your friends and act unbothered about things concerning you, but sometimes you cry in the middle of the night. Thats cool. Thats fine. Do something that thrills you- like a rollercoaster or going out at night. Feel that dopamine rush baby 😎

Terushima- let down your walls babe. I know youre flirty and hot, but you also wanna be held and thats cool too. Also maybe make a to do list. Having fun is all you need, but sometimes you want a deep talk at 2am on a rooftop. You are complex. That is okay. That is hot

Sakusa- you overthink everything and worry that what you said or did to someone wasnt enough, or was hurtful in any way. People love you for how you are- quirks and everything. You excite hot energy and like to do things alone. Thats hot. Who cares if you get judged?

I would like to preface that I think my mutuals could pull just about anyone, BUT, I'm gonna choose one for them (most likely not their selfship, because that's too easy, and I want to be dIfFeReNt). All characters are aged up.

Also these are the mutuals I can recall, and if I miss on a mutual, please don't be sad.

@toshiswife -- ME ME ME my person! LOL jk, I would say she could pull Daichi. They're both responsible, level-headed, and I think her no-nonsense personality would match well with Daichi's drive. Plus, who doesn't love a man with THIGHS.

@shokami -- hi hubs, also with me, I'm collecting a harem. I think you could pull Sugawara. I think he matches well with you, because he's just like me, but much better. He's caring and kind, but not a doormat, and he can give you all the love you deserve. (Did I say Sugawara is like me?)

@bb-kawa -- hi 😘. You deserve someone you can be soft around--me. Lol anyway, but she could pull someone like Matsukawa. He's fairly chill, sarcastic, and can entertain you. Plus, he has a constant stream of income--funerals ain't going out of business lol.

@ahtsuwu -- you're my wife, no one else's 😡. Lol, but if I had to say--you could pull Ennoshita. He's responsible, he's BEEFY, he's kind, and UGH, HE'S A PHYSICAL THERAPIST. He deserves some FUCKING LOVE.

@larkspyrr -- oh boy. You could pull Zhongli, because uhh, how can he NOT LOVE YOU? You exude exhausted woman energy in the best way, because you always manage to get through things. Oh and he needs a sugar mommy and a pet, since Azhdaha isn't able to fit at home.

@hopelesshawks -- could pull Thoma. He would do anything to make you happy and fulfilled. He is perfect, and I can't take you away from him 😔. I mean, he's a house husband, he's so kind, and he's like...fuylvgkx amazing.

@002opdestiny -- hmmm. Ganyu. She's smart and dependable, but she's also sensitive enough to understand your needs. She's not intimidating, and she would absolutely be taken aback by your energy, in a good way. She is really shy about her feelings, but she'll feed you well, and you'll be good.

@katsupeach -- you could pull Kuroo. I'm going off the rules for this one, because I wish you could see how wonderful you are, and that any guy would be lucky to have you.

@danibby -- you could pull Itadori. He would absolutely appreciate you, and I think he'd fall for your kind personality. And I think he'd appreciate that you both look out for each other, even if he doesn't want to admit it.

@kentoangel -- you could pull Uzui. I mean, have you seen him? Uhh, he likes confident, pretty women, and you love to hype yourself up (AS YOU SHOULD), and you both can be a FABULOUS, FLAMBOYANT...Uhh quintuple? Plus his wives are hot, I mean HELLO?

Tanaka can BAKE Bro

He learned from Saeko obviously

World famous lemon bars and peanut butter squares

They’ve actually won competitions

Daichi is a doggo dad!!! I REPEAT!

He has a corgi named Mochi, and a pug named tofu.

Yes the third years bully him for his name choices, why do you ask?

Nekoma is Karasuno’s crutch, and vice versa.

These bbs will deadass go down swinging for each other. It doesn’t matter if they have a close bond with the player or not, they will defend them to the grave.

Hinata thinks toilet paper should face outward.

Kageyama completely agrees, but only disagrees to fuck with him

Same thing with cereal before milk.

Kageyama’s favorite drink isn’t milk!!! It’s warm chai!

When the team learned this, they always made sure to get the setter one whenever they were at a coffee shop.

Tsukki can play drums. That’s it. That’s the post.

SPEAKING OF MUSIC-

Behold my favorite Haikyuu headcannon.

Tadashi Yamaguchi can s i n g.

He takes lessons, practices all the time, is in concerts and showcases all over the place.

The second he musters the courage to talk about a song that he’s making good progress on, the team asked when his next concert was, because you bet your sweet ass they all simultaneously thought to go. Daichi didn’t even have to make it requirement.

Ennoshita is so fucking good at chess. Even Tsukki can’t beat him.

Noya collects keychains!!

He always asks his teammates to get him one whenever they travel.

Eventually, they all just did it by default to surprise him.

Suga introduced the team to meditation.

Asahi falls asleep most times

Noya and Hinata find it the least beneficial because they are awful at clearing their minds.

“Dude when I tried to clear my mind, I immediately thought ’do penguins have knees’?”

“I heard about four songs at the same time and could see through the eyes of someone making a painting.”

Speaking of Asahiiii :)

The team comes to him with uniform troubles!

He’s sewn loose ends, hemmed calf length shorts, tied off loose threads, repaired broken seams. Etc.

Kinoshita leads locker room: the musical at every single game.

It totally boosts the team’s morale and it’s like the dumbest songs ever

I mean like Take on Me, Bohemian Rhapsody, or Careless Whisperer, YES THEY MAKE THE SAXOPHONE NOISES WITH THEIR MOUTHS WHO DO YOU THINK THEY ARE??

Narita is a fucking s h a r k at board games.

Is the reigning champion of every single game. Every. Single. Game

Yachi likes to try and teach the boys how to use a camera.

It helps her share her passion for photography

And for the love of god some of these boys need another hobby.

The only ones who retain what she tells them are the third years and occasionally Tanaka.

Daichi takes KILLER photos dude.

Kiyoko, being the true girl boss she is, loves to surprise the team with treats every now and then.

She’ll bring homemade baked goods, little handmade goodie bags, or will buy the team pizza with her own money before they have a big game.

“Do your best!”

Good ol’ coach Ukai.

He’s ensured that he has crates upon crates of yogurt drinks, Gari-Gari Kun Popsicles and meat buns on every single delivery truck that comes to his store.

His boys make him so happy, why shouldn’t he return the favor?

Takeda takes music requests while he’s driving.

Sometimes the team will bump to banging oldies, courtesy of coach Ukai, throwbacks, courtesy of the third years, or well known songs, courtesy of Kinoshita, because he really really loves leading Karasuno: the musical.

Angsty hcs

Yamaguchi constantly considers quitting the team bc he’s insecure in his progression

Whenever this happens, Tanaka will bring him homemade peanut butter squares, watch Disney movies with him, and talk his ear off about how proud he is.

I like to think they have a lil bond. So like Yams will deadass just send him a sad face, their established code (courtesy of Tanaka), and the second year is already asking Saeko to pack him a bag as he leaps into the kitchen to make peanut butter squares.

“Code Pinch” is what they use, so their parents don’t know of their plans. But the second Tanaka frantically says those words, Saeko drops whatever activity she’s doing without hesitation.

Ennoshita regrets having formerly left the team, because he felt so bad for letting the team down in the past.

Tsukishima is super stoic, as we all know. The only people he confides in are Bokuto and Kuroo.

He knows Yamaguchi has many issues of his own, so he feels it’s unfair for him to dump more on him.

One night during their blocking training, Tsukishima was totally spaced out and the two noticed, so they took him into a little supply room.

They sat in a circle in silence, both resting a hand somewhere on his body (I would say kuroo on the knee, Bokuto on the shoulder), until he finally talked to them about what happened.

They def do a two man hug when beanpole started to cry. And like mans sobbed bc he hadn’t cried in like 10 years.

Bokuto would just sing to them super softly until Tsukki stops crying.

And it just so happened to be his favorite Disney song which only made him cry more

Narita and Kinoshita are called “side pieces” by other teams.

As soon as they got to nationals, someone from an unknown team made a snide comment to Tanaka along the lines of “try not to kill your captain again, buzz cut.”

This absolutely triggered a PTSD episode in Tanaka and flattened his mood.

Our resident bad boy deadass teared up at the thought of it happening to anyone else. (OUCH POOR BABY I LUB HIM SO MUCH WHY HURT HIM EVER)

While Daichi went straight to him to help him, the random dude was faced with two scary teams.

Karasuno, and Nekoma.

Kuroo glares straight into this man’s soul and-

“You say anything like that to him again, and there’ll be stumps where your feet should be. Got it?”

I deadass think that bc of the way they’re drawn that Nishinoya bites his nails.

It’s not even a nerves thing, or a bad habit, it’s a mental thing.

Something tells him he has to do it.

Is so insecure about it, and constantly wishes to wrap his fingers before matches.

Every time Kageyama lashes out at a teammate, he goes home and cries.

And Tsukishima’s snarky ass comments don’t help either

He doesn’t ever want to be king again

Sugawara goes through random depressive episodes.

Like the super bad ones where all you can do is lay in bed for a few days and can’t feel anything but static.

Does he have someone to help him? Most times it’s Daichi, who will just come over and be this mf’s servant.

He will carry Suga if he has to. Mans has to get up and eat, drink and pee.

He does it without hesitation though. He never complains.

When Daichi isn’t there, or he can’t even muster the strength/courage to tell his friend, he goes through it alone and tries his damndest to go through the cycle he does with Daichi.

Sometimes he does it, most times he fails. He only gets relief when Asahi notices he isn’t at practice and immediately races to his house after it’s over.

When Hinata’s adrenaline runs out on the bus, his panic disorder kicks in.

The kid is intimidated by height and power. Literally he has to have panic disorder

He has the type of panic attacks where he can only squeeze his eyes shut and choke as tears leak from his eyes.

He also vibrates really badly, which alerts whoever is sitting behind him about the attack. It’s usually Tsukishima and Yamaguchi.

When it happens, Tadashi taps Tsukishima lightly, getting the mid blocker’s attention. He then wordlessly points to Hinata with a sympathetic look.

Tsukki nods and does the same to Kageyama, minus the sympathetic look.

You can see the heartbreak in the setter’s eyes as he somberly nods. He wordlessly places a hand on Hinata’s knee, alerting his presence.

“I’m gonna hug you. I know you can’t reply, but if you don’t want me to, find a way to give me a sign.”

If he can’t stand being touched at that point, Hinata will viciously slap his thigh.

If he can, he doesn’t do anything and lets Kageyama wrap him up and pull him into his lap. He whispers sweet nothing into the bb’s ear.

“Listen to me. Listen to my heartbeat. It’s only us.”

If that doesn’t work, Kageyama holds up a peace sign behind him to alert the two in the seat that he needs help. The two immediately rise to their feet without hesitation or protest.

Tsukishima quiets down the bus entirely and tells the coaches, as Yamaguchi takes Hinata into his lap and sings You Are My Sunshine and A Spoonful off Sugar. (Okay fucking ouch that one hurt more than Tanaka’s.)

Asahi constantly wishes he had a partner, and thinks he doesn’t because he’s unlovable.

He deadass has a playlist called “lonely hearts club”. And one of the songs on there is Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof

Daichi is overwhelmed by everyone coming to him with issues, but he never lets it show.

His coaches are the only ones who check in with him

Absolutely in stitches when it happens, like bb is just so overwhelmed that he cries and cries. Ukai wraps him in a super tight hug as he continuously whispers to him that “it’s all okay.”

Coach Ukai? Yeah he’s in awful debt.

He won’t ever tell the team, or Takeda. He doesn’t want to owe more money, or be seen as incapable of surviving on his own.

Takeda gets burnt out very easily

Ukai actually takes some time to help him grade!!

They put on a calming playlist and work together.

Takeda handles the essay questions and Ukai takes the multiple choice, since he has no fucking idea what he’s looking at.

Yachi really wants to be an actress, but her anxiety completely fucks up her auditions.

Oh yeah the team 100% puts on little skits amongst themselves.

Oh yeah it’s 100% for her

Kiyoko is so afraid of graduating.

She’s worried that she’s going to lose herself without having a group of rambunctious boys to take care of.

She’s also scared she won’t be able to make the same bond with others that she did with the team and the coaches.

Before and After Rituals

a/n: hi I hope yall like Imma make this a series with the schools so mauh <3

pairings: karasuno x reader

warning: I’m pretty sure this is all clean if not feel free to say something.

summary: the boy’s before and after game things that they do with you

Daichi Sawamura

the night before a game you always go over to his house with some meat buns and either stay for a while or spend the night

he always holds onto you in some way

it calms him down

its not anything big but it gives him a good sense of peace and quiet before chaos

after his game you always wait for him outside the gym, win or lose

he goes with his team back to the school and you meet him there too

you either go to his house or yours and one of you spends the night just to calm down his head

you always get snacks and even if he tells you to not get to much junk you always get to much and he doesn’t stop you

if he won then you talk about the next match and his thoughts on the team

he’ll also spin you around when he sees you outside the gym

idk he loves doing it

if he lost than he’ll start on things he needs to do better on and you’ll try and cheer him up with some corny jokes and kithes.

Sugawara Koshi

all the morning before the game you two are attached at the hip.

everyone is just used to you “sneaking” onto the bus to drive with them

in reality him trying and failing horribly to cover you with his jacket and coach just giving up on it

constant quiet giggles at first as you try and calm his nerves

then around the end its more quiet and serious as he focuses a little more

after the game he naps on you the whole way home

if he wins you get to listen to his rambling about some idea he had on signals he could use or a set up he wants to try

he could literally talk for hours on what he was thinking wall watching and playing its so adorable

if he loses then theres a aura of sadness in the bus and if its bad enough he’ll muffle his small sniffs into your shoulder

that hasn’t happen except for date tech and sejioh though and your happy for that

you always sleep over after the game

Asahi Azumane

before the game welcome to teddy bear time

noya constant teasing for a week straight since the big dork is constantly on you freaking out

normally its not to bad and a lot of it is just of how scare he is that his spikes will get blocked a lot and the comments he’s sure to receive about his looks when he gets there

when game day does come you always kiss his cheek and hold his face to tell him good luck

def earning gags from tssuki but you didn’t hear it from me

after the game its like teddy bear time x10

win or lose you get a new weighted blanket for a couple of days

if he wins its a more happy blanket yes but he’s so exhausted that he just falls asleep on you the minute you meet him at his house after they left for the bus

plus a bunch of random ‘holy crap wait i did that?!”’s to himself throughout the day

if he loses he cries a little, blaming himself for the entire thing

you always tell him that its not his fault and that he did his best

he’s honestly so pessimistic the night after and your one it telling him that he needs to remember how it feels but not let it bring him down

you bring him up with those comments and he’s so grateful for it

Nishinoya Yuu

every time the day before a game he likes to go somewhere with you

weather it be the park, the arcade, an ice cream shop

a freaking pet shop (yes you almost got a pet that day)

he finds it relaxing to see you having a nice time with him and every time he always makes sure its a place to make you smile

after the game he’s a koala on you, win or lose

the only real difference is happy koala or sad koala

happy koala is randomly kissing you and laughing, nuzzling into you while Tanaka either gags or whines about how single he feels

so before the game its MAJOR sucking up to you

literally after a while you’ll get more used to it and get what kinds of attention he wants but like at first its just a lot of complements and stares and draping

no one even understands why he’s sucking up to you other than him, you (after a little), and ennoshita

he just wants you to return the energy

after the game all depends on winning or loosing

alright this boy before the game is normally fairly daily ngl

you get normal bouncy sunshine that will follow you anywhere and everywhere all the time

but the night before you get meditation mode where he sets out his game stuff and sits there for like half an hour

first time this happened you got scared for him cause he never sits still that long

NEVER

now though you just sorta hang on his bed watching him cause its cute

after the game is the biggest depending there is out of the rest

if he wins he is bouncing of the walls after a little nap

when you finally get him home he’ll have you throw the ball back and forth for like an hour before you call it and make him lay down or eat or something

if he loses its like he lost all his energy for a little while

he tries to fall asleep but cant due to a replay of something he did wrong

you always run your hand through his hair and try to calm him down

calm down as in cheer up not energy

at least until someone says something (usually tanaka) that gets him on another energy high to beat them next time

you always sleep over though it just happens so often that it became normal

Tssukishima Kei

before is fairly normal im ngl

he doesn’t do to much out of the ordinary

I like to think he’s a heck tone more affectionate in private

his before game time isn’t anything special though

he does come with you to the store to get snacks with yamaguchi more often tho so

thats something

after a game is really calm and slow

once again I think he’s a lot more affectionate in private so you lay on him while hes on his phone to calm down

half the time its calming you down since you were freaking out more than him

but same difference

this is what happens win or lose though

like if they lose and he tried he might lay on you instead but its normally just like that

honestly thinking of him being more affectionate in private just makes me fall for him ahhhhhh hate this but anyways

this boy good lord

so before a game he literally shaking

like he was fine the whole week but the day before he’s slowly freaking out more and more

tssuki will laugh at him while your trying your best to talk him out of his up coming panic attack that might come

a good light smack on his back and a cheek kiss is good enough to get him distracted fro thinking to much though

after a game is always the same thing unless he screwed up a serve really bad

you two always go to the store and gets some snacks and them go to his house and just talk about anything ad everything

if he wins its normally about the game but when he loses you bring up random things to cheer him up

if he messed up he’ll get quiet and just lay on you for hours

but you know that if you can get something about his amazing improvement he’ll eventually brighten up

Nishinoya’s words are cut off by the door to Tanaka’s room sliding open, Ennoshita entering carrying a box of snacks. Tiredly, his gaze hops from Noya to Tanaka, back and forth, before he sighs.

Tanaka opens his mouth, but Ennoshita holds up a hand. “I don’t want to know. I really, really don’t.”

Noya pouts, then collapses dramatically across Tanaka’s lap. “Do you want me to be alone forever, Ennoshita? Are you against my happiness?”

Ennoshita stares him down. “I don’t want to know.”

“Wait! You’ve had a boyfriend before!” Tanaka shouts and Ennoshita feels his will to live slip away like sand through a sieve. “You’re perfect!”

Noya’s eyes go wide. “You’ve had a boyfriend and you didn’t tell me!? I thought we were friends! I’m trying to score my first boyfriend and you don’t even offer me advice!”

Ennoshita sits heavily, pulling out his homework under the hopeful delusion that maybe, just maybe, he’ll be able to drag their attention back to the assignments due tomorrow. “Yes. I went on three dates with a guy. We were never boyfriends. We never even held hands. Noya, I don’t have advice for you, and even if I did, if I gave it to you, you’d never listen to it.”

Noya gasps, hurt crossing his face and it’s just genuine enough that Ennoshita almost feels bad about it. “I’m not like that!”

Ennoshita raises a brow, but sighs. “Fine. You’re trying to score a date with Asahi, right?”

“Yep! He’s the coolest loser I know!”

“Right.” Ennoshita blinks, then shakes his head. “Don’t say that. People don’t like being insulted. Also, Asahi’s not one for grand gestures. He’s too nervous for that. Don’t ask him out in front of people, or with loud noises or anything. You’ll make him uncomfortable, and that’s not what you want him to feel when you ask him out.”

“Got it! I just gotta be quiet!” Noya shouts, and Ennoshita does not feel the need to send up a prayer for Asahi because quiet is definitely a weapon in Noya’s arsenal.

“Right. Noya. Maybe you should write him a letter?”

Noya looks a bit offended. “That’s a coward’s move. I’ll tell him straight up.”

“Asahi’s a coward, Noya. He’ll appreciate a coward’s move.”

Noya considers this for all of three seconds. “Nah. He’s not a coward. He just has a glass heart.”

Ennoshita takes a deep, deep breath.

Ennoshita’s headache is all for not - Asahi, in a show of bravery, asks Noya out before Noya can ask him. Noya, of course, is completely enamoured and wastes no time telling Ennoshita that he should have had more faith in him.

In fact, he moves so quick to chastise Ennoshita that he forgets to tell Asahi yes, and nearly sends the poor man into a panic anyways.

his love language is physical touch

after every one of his games, the first thing he does when he sees you is tackles you to the ground in a hug

the day he walks beside you without holding your hand is the he is kidnapped and replaced with a clone

and he’d always place a kiss on the tip of your nose and vice versa before you went your separate ways on the walk home

and one time he caught a flu and (because he loved you so much) he wouldn’t go within 10 feet of you for like a week

and that was the hardest week of his life

he almost had a meltdown on day 3

HOW WAS HE SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE WITHOUT HIS GOODBYE KISSES?!

but don’t worry because as soon as his flu subsided, he gave you enough hugs and kisses to compensate for the whole week he missed

Tobio Kageyama

his love language is word of affirmation

honestly, whenever you compliment his volleyball skills (even if it sounds really amateur) it makes his heart go 💖💞💕💓

not that he’d even admit it though

and recently, he’s been trying to compliment you more because some how he came to the conclusion that he wasn’t being nice enough to you and that you’d leave him for Oikawa if he didn’t step up his game

he likes compliments and feeling worthy as much as the next person but..

sometimes it makes him kinda flustered and self-conscious

anyway, he thinks that actions speak louder than words

before a game, rather than verbally encouraging him, he prefers it when you play with his fingers or give him a massage

that relaxes him ten times more than words ever could

and he might not act like it in front of his friends - but he spends most of his day looking forward to 9 o’clock when y’all can both be together and cuddle in bed ^^

also, before a big game you make it your mission to wake up especially early , find Asahi and do his hair

firstly, you do it better than he ever could

secondly, the feeling of your fingers gently massaging his scalp and lacing his hair in between them just made him so calm

and in those moments he would just look up at you with admiration in his eyes and wonder what he ever did to deserve you

Koshi Sugawara

his love language is quality time

this man actually gets physical withdrawal symptoms when he is away from you for too long

and his teammates know symptoms off by heart and the order they appear in so they can identify when Suga is going through YNWF ( Y/N withdrawal fever ):

The first sign of YNWF; excessive lip biting, lip dryness and generally poor lip condition - this is due to the fact that (Y/N) is the one that always reminds Suga to put on lip balm

The second sign of YNWF; becoming lenient and overly nice to the first years - since (Y/N) isn’t here, he has nobody to be nice to. So he is nice to the children.

The third phase of YNWF - and probably the most dangerous; mood swings. He goes from fanon to canon Suga real quick.

The fourth and final phase of YNWF; denial.

Daichi Sawamura

every second he spends with you, he has his hands on you

and he’ll immediately back off if you are even slightly uncomfortable with it

it makes him feel like he is protecting you (especially in front of Tanaka)

but with you, oh, the baby tries his damn best to be an ideal boyfriend.

it’s so cute and endearing, cause you see how he kinda gets around you.

“GWAH-!” hinata once again receives too late and gets another ball to the face.

“wha- sugawara-san- i-” kageyama stutters on his words.

“OH HE IS!” tanaka and nishinoya bounce around him. “TOBIUO’S ALL GROWN UP! HE’S A BIG BOY!”

they tackle him in a hug, and hinata follows after, leaping in and cheering for kageyama. yamaguchi and ennoshita pull asahi in a bit quite harshly, and the ace accidentally tugs both daichi and sugawara along. tsukishima tries to sass about how the great king has his own queen now, but sugawara shushes him and yanks him onto the pile of screaming volleyball boys.

amongst all the screaming, the laughter, the teasing, and the shouts of pain because BOKE HINATA BOKE YOUR FOOT IS IN MY FACE-

“hello?”

they all turn to you, standing at the gym gates with an eco-bag full of milk cartons.

god damn, you look like an angel to kageyama. (and it’s not just because you’re holding a load of his favorite drink.)

“kageyama-kun, is that her?”

kageyama smiles. it comes to him genuinely. it’s like once he sees you, the weight on his chest is gone. (quite literally, because the team takes this as their cue to scramble their way off kageyama).

“yeah. that’s my girl.”

“hi bubs!” you grin and hold out the eco-bag. “i got you some refreshments.”

“hi babe,” he sits up and takes the bag from your hands, and presses a kiss to your knuckles. “you didn’t have to get me these.”

“it was on sale, anyways,” you turn red at his public display of affection.

hinata makes his way to you, stars in his eyes as he shakes your hand. “hello! i’m hinata-kun, nice to meet you, kageyama’s girlfriend!”

you smile back and eagerly shake his hand. “i’m y/n, nice to meet you all!”

nishinoya and tanaka are in tears. they kneel down in front of kageyama, who turns horribly red.

“KAGEYAMA-SENPAI!!” they wail. “WE DIDN’T THINK YOU’D GET A GIRLFRIEND BEFORE US! AND YOU TREAT EACH OTHER SO WELL! YOU HAVE OUR RESPECT KAGEYAMA-SENPAI”

“s-senpai?!” kageyama’s eyes widen. “get-get off the damn floor! the both of you being single has nothing to tdo with me! the two of you are just idiots!”

he turns to you, his cheeks burning. “t-that’s noya-san and t-tanaka-san, they’re just jealous... that i.... have such a lovely and supporting girlfriend.”

your heart melts at his words.

meanwhile, sugawara-san hoots and claps for his first-year setter. “kageyama-kun, nice!”

kageyama turns impossibly redder. “i’m s-sorry about them, babe.”

you laugh shyly, and brush a hand through his hair to calm him down. “bubs, they’re just happy for you. i’m happy for you too, you’ve always done your best to make me smile.”

hinata pipes up before kageyama can react. “he really has been trying, y/n-chan! he wanted to impress you with his tosses earlier! he wouldn’t stop being so nervous abou-”

a volleyball collides with his face. needless to say this story ends nearly quite the way it began, only with our precious blueberry boy smiling just a little bit brighter.

okay, this dude has a big bro. he was taught how to treat a lady.

before tsukishima can answer, yamaguchi pipes up.

tsukishima chokes on his food and turns to yamaguchi. yamaguchi’s eyes widen and he whispers a sorry before the first-years and second-years let out a collective scream of suprise.

guess it’s too late to tell him to shut up.

“TSUKISHIMA-KUN YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND?” hinata screams. Kageyama spits out his water.

“tsukishima, why didn’t you tell us?” nishinoya karate-chops him on the head. “what is she like? tell us! tell us! T E L L U S”

“i don’t have to tell any of you airheads anything,” he grumbles, trying to will himself not to blush.

“if you won’t tell us, we’ll just ask yamaguchi! yama-yama! is tsukishima a simp?”

yamaguchi turns red and stutters. “i-i-i can’t tell you anything! ju-ju-just ask her, she’s coming over today- oh no! oh, no, no, no, no, no, no!” he buries his face in his hands.“i spoiled the suprise! y/n-san’s gonna be saaaaaaad!”

tsukishima rolls his eyes. “yamaguchi, urusai. i can always just pretend i’m surprised.”

everyone falls silent.

yamaguchi feels tears of joy. “tsukishima... you would do that for y/n-san?”

tsukishima furrows his eyebrows. “yeah. i wouldn’t wanna get shortcake’s effort to go to waste-”

there’s a knock on the gym doors. yamaguchi aggressively shushes everyone, then pushes his best friend a little too harshly to open the door.

“who is it- shortcake?”

he tries his best to pretend he’s shocked, but he’s met face-to-face with a dinosaur plushie just as tall as he is.

“surprise!” you smile, placing the stuffed animal down and hold your arms out.

tsukishima really is surprised. his features soften as the corner of his lips quirk up.

“shortcake,” he pulls you in for a hug. “what’s all this?”

“congrats on your win! you were fire!” you grin.

“you don’t have to say that. it’s fine. but thank you for the gifts.”

“Y/N-SAAAAAN!”

“yama-yama!” you run to your friend and bear hug him. “i saw you too! you were badass!”

“b-badass??” he blushes. “pshaw, no, i just stayed on the court for a while-”

A pencil dangled between two of your fingers, gently swinging back and forth as you tapped the eraser’s tip against your chin in thought. Looking over Hinata’s shoulder at the worksheet laying on the table, you extended your hand and made a neat scrawl on the page. “That’s good translating, Hinata! However,” you dragged your pencil across the surface, marking a line and arrow to point at a space near the beginning of his sentence, “keep in mind that although gerunds look like verbs, they act as nouns. So, this word should go here.”

Yachi, who was seated to your right, nodded in agreement. “I looked through his notes doodles, and it looked like they were going over gerunds in class!”

With narrowed eyes, Hinata scanned the page, muttering the sentence underneath his breath. Suddenly, his hazel eyes lit up in understanding and his lips morphed into a round “O.” “Ohhhh, that make a lot more sense! Thanks, (y/n), you’re a big help, especially in English! Also, look, guys!”

He rummaged through his cluttered backpack and fished out a slightly wrinkled sheet of paper with a red “14/50” marked on the top right corner. Holding it up proudly, he declared, “I got a better score than last time! By nine points!”

“That’s still an F,” Tsukishima pointed out, eyes glued to the pages of the book he was reading. Yamaguchi and Kageyama tried to stifle their snickers.

“Y-You’re not even looking!” Hinata defended. The ginger was met with a shrug. “I don’t need to see the score to know you failed.”

Before any fighting could break out, however, the door swung open, revealing the remaining third-years. Bags of snacks in their arms, the four of them stepped in. “We’re back! Your parent/guardian let us in, (y/n),” Sugawara announced, setting his bag down on the table. The rest followed suit and set the goodies down. Rummaging through one of the bags, Daichi pulled out a meat bun.

“Hinata, here’s your meat bun,” he said, handing the snack to the excited first-year, who had long-forgotten Tsukishima’s snide remark about his lack of intellectual aptitude. Kiyoko offered Kageyama his milk, the slight brush of their hands being enough to stir Noya and Tanaka into an envious craze. Asahi tried to settle them down, nervously reminding them that they needed to act respectful in your home, especially after your family had agreed to let you all study there. You stifled a giggle as Sugawara and Daichi joined in, scolding their underclassmen for their poor behavior and threatening them with a time-out.

With an exasperated sigh, Sugawara took a seat next to you on the mat. “Ah, I can’t help but worry about how Ennoshita’s going to handle both of them on his own.”

Giving a sidelong glance to the second-year, who was now forcing Noya and Tanaka to complete timed practice problems, your lips formed a small smile. “Looks like he does a pretty good job at it, though.”

Sugawara let out an amused huff. “Guess I’m worried over nothing. Oh, also,” he dug into the plastic bag in front of him, taking out your favorite snack and offering it to you. “Here you go.”

“Oh, thank you, Suga, I didn’t even ask for this…” you flashed him a grateful smile and took the package from his hands, suppressing the blush that threatened to overcome your cheeks as your fingertips brushed. He gave a sheepish smile and glanced to the side in response, giving the back of his neck an anxious rub.

“Ah, it’s the least I could do to thank you for letting us all come over to study. It’s really helpful. I appreciate it, (y/n).”

“It’s not much, really. I’m more than glad to help you all (read: Hinata, Kageyama, Tanaka, and Noya) out with English and offer my place. Having everyone together makes it easier. They need to pass these exams so you all get to play.”

Your offer to help the team with their studies may have seemed a simple gesture as both their friend and co-manager. On the inside, however, you really were more than happy to have everyone over for whatever reason. It left you with a feeling of awe. The last thing you would’ve expected 3 months ago was to be sitting in your new home in Japan, surrounded by a group of people who accepted you despite your poor Japanese and late appearance to Karasuno. Just 4 months ago, after you learned about your parent/guardian’s job transfer to Japan, you were left feeling an array of mixed feelings:

Anxiety – a whole new country? With a language you could barely even speak or understand? How was that going to work? Could you even make friends at school? God knows how long it took you to make the friends you have now.

Disappointment – you were looking forward to graduating high school with the friends you’ve made throughout the past few years. Having to say goodbye would be difficult, and you’d miss them.

Yet, you felt a sliver of hopefulness – new experiences were waiting for you. You had the opportunity to lead a new life in a foreign place. It filled you both with fear and exhilaration.

On the night before your first day at Karasuno, you could barely sleep after spending hours religiously practicing how to introduce yourself in Japanese. Having to introduce yourself to the class and speaking with your new classmates was inevitable, after all. And so the next day, you found yourself standing in front of the classroom, trying to suppress the nervous shudder that threatened to rack your body and ignore the prickles of sweat on your palms. Despite how much you mentally recited your introduction that morning, your current situation left your mind blank, unable to conjure any words. Fueled by the awkward silence, the numerous gazes focused on you, and the growing pit of anxiety in your stomach, what came out was a quiet, jumbled form of what you intended to say.

“Hello, (y/n) (l/n). I’m (insert your original country name here). I can’t Japanese, but I hope friends. Everyone, nice to meet,” you bowed, both in respect and so that you could hide your face, which was red from embarrassment. You knew you messed up, but you pretended otherwise, hoping that nobody would point out your mistake.

You straightened up after a few moments of silence, registering the confused looks of your new classmates and feeling another stab of shame. In response to your introduction, the teacher raised her eyebrows and blinked in confusion. Then her eyes warmed, and she offered you a smile as she spoke up. “Class, this is (l/n) (y/n). She recently moved here from (insert OG country here). She’s still learning Japanese; however, her English is perfect, so I’m sure you can all learn something from each other. Please make her feel welcome. Your seat is over there, (l/n).”

Shoulders sagging, you made your way to your desk, avoiding eye contact despite the pairs of eyes that followed you to your seat. Focusing on the lecture was a struggle. Not only could you barely understand anything the teacher was saying; worries about how the rest of the day would go also flooded your mind. This was only the morning; how could you navigate your way through the halls? Ask for directions? Would you meet people? Where would you eat lunch? How could you survive?

The remainder of the classes went by gruesomely slow. Too embarrassed from your slip this morning and too shy to meet new people despite wanting to make a friend, you successfully dodged conversation with any of your classmates. You were relieved that finally lunch came by, yet that presented another problem. You weren’t sure where to go, but you were sure that you were going to eat by yourself.

After a few minutes of walking around the hallways, you settled for eating lunch in the classroom. At least it meant you didn’t have to rush to class after the bell rang. Taking a seat, you pulled out your boxed lunch and set it out in front of you. Painfully aware of how alone you must have looked, you pretended to look really interested in your meal (am i the only one or--). You poked it, broke it into pieces, then brought each sliver to your mouth and chewed slowly. If only your family had switched your phone plans earlier, then you could at least spend time scrolling the internet or lament to your friends back home about how your day was going.

Still “engrossed” in your meal, you failed to notice a figure standing in front of your desk. Only after you saw a hand situate itself on the edge of your desk did you look up.

You met the chestnut eyes of a boy. He bore a warm smile that made a small crinkle in his eyes and beauty mark. Strands of grey hair draped naturally in front of his eyes and framed the sides of his face. Despite your unease, his soft features helped to calm your racing heart and mind. He seemed a friendly person; after all, he was able to approach you.

“Hey, you’re (l/n), right? I’m Sugawara Koushi, but you can call me Suga. I’m in your class,” he introduced in pretty darn good English.

‘Man, that means he heard me this morning…’ you thought miserably. Yet, you couldn’t help but feel some relief. Perhaps you hadn’t given others or yourself much of a chance before jumping to the conclusion that you were incapable of meeting new people.

Clearing your throat, you shyly extended a hand to him in greeting. “Yes, I’m (y/n) (l/n). Call me (y/n). It’s nice to meet you, Suga,” you replied hesitantly, finally using the correct words in Japanese that you had been practicing the previous night.

Shaking your hand, his eyes widened in pleasant surprise. “Your Japanese sounds pretty good! You just moved, so you’re still learning, right? How about I help you improve that while you help me with English?”

You were about to nod eagerly in appreciation when you both overheard some snickering across the room. Two boys and a girl sat together, whispering quite loudly and sneaking oh-so-inconspicuous glances over at your desk. Taking notice that they were caught staring, they presumed to loudly munch on their meals and talk about the weather.

Suga only shot them annoyed glare and shook his head before turning his attention back to you. “Sorry, those are my… Friends.” The strain in his voice after saying that last word made you question if they really were on friendly terms.

After that day, you found yourself spending every lunch period with Suga and his other third-year friends Daichi, Asahi, and Shimizu. You initially felt unsure of how to talk to them, but after Sugawara’s efforts to include you in his circle and some reassuring words about being yourself and not letting a small, temporary language barrier hold you back from making friends, you earned a bit of confidence. While you spoke a hybrid of English and Japanese with them, you eventually managed to pick up a lot of Japanese from talking everyday, and after these few months of constant exposure, you were able to hold decent conversations. Additionally, the extra help you sought from the teaching staff allowed you to be able to keep up in class, and your instructors were understanding enough to give you some leniency on your assignments during this adjustment period.

Hanging around your new friends often, it was only a matter of time before you were introduced to the rest of Karasuno’s boys’ volleyball team. It occurred one lunch period three weeks after you first arrived, when Asahi suggested that you join some club activities. You were discouraged, however, considering that it was already halfway through the year, you didn’t know enough Japanese yet to converse with just anyone, and you were a tad shy, which made joining clubs a bit difficult. At that moment, your new friends all made eye contact with each other, then looked at you.

“Why not join our volleyball club?” Suga asked. “Shimizu could always use the help. She’s our only student manager.”

Shimizu nodded in agreement, her blue gaze soft. “Your help would be really appreciated. There’s a lot to this job, so having someone to split the work with would be relieving. You can also help me look for someone to take my place when we graduate.”

Later that day you found yourself in the gym being blocked by Sugawara, who was protecting you from two crazed boys whose collars were held back by Daichi. A ginger-haired boy looked at you with curiosity, excitedly introducing himself as Hinata and pointing out the names of the other members on the court (“This is ‘Bakageyama’ and that guy’s ‘Four-eyed Jerk Face’—").

Upon their release (which was granted only after they promised to behave), Tanaka and Noya dashed over to you, tears in their eyes as they held your hands and expressed their gratitude for your presence. “Oh, (y/n), you kind soul, helping Shimizu with the managerial work. Better yet, now we have two cute girls to support us, this is amazing!”

And that’s how you found yourself sitting with your new friends in your living room and feeling grateful for their vibrant personalities, kindness, and acceptance. You couldn’t have asked for a better batch of friends to end your year with. Though, you were most grateful to Sugawara. If not for him, the last several months of your highschool experience may have gone by miserably, with nothing special to note and no new friends to celebrate with. His gentle, understanding nature had done nothing but support you and make you feel welcome. He helped introduce you to a new, comfortable life you had trouble imagining before your arrival to Japan. He dispelled your doubts and fears, instilling in you a newfound confidence in your abilities. It certainly helped that the team was just as supportive and patient with you.

You could recount the events of the past few months that brought warmth to your heart. These people were growing on you, making you feel like you could be yourself more each day. Daichi provided you a sense of security and leadership. Asahi was empathetic, quick to detect your feelings of uneasiness and asking you if you were okay. Shimizu made sure to make you feel welcome as a friend and fellow manager, even inviting you to a café over the weekend to brainstorm ideas on recruiting a replacement (who you both later discovered to be Yachi) and try out some desserts. Tanaka and Noya tried to teach you all the Japanese curse words they knew, initially lying to you about their meanings so they could see the rest of the team’s reactions when you would blurt things out in the middle of practice (Let’s just say that Daichi, Suga, Ennoshita, and Tsukki knew whose fault this was, and Asahi was real shook hearing a string of curse words from your mouth while you sat there, no ill intent emanating from you whatsoever). Ennoshita gave you a comforting, easygoing presence. Tsukki was… Tsukki (LOL). But he could carry on a conversation, often genuinely interested whenever you talked about the culture back in (other country). And you knew he was soft. Hinata was a burst of energy, and you found his bickering with Tsukishima and Kageyama silly and quite precious. You often stayed with Yachi to toss balls to Kageyama late at night, much to his appreciation. Yachi and Yamaguchi were some of the biggest sweethearts on the team, and all you could think about was needing to protect them.

There was definitely something different in your interactions with Sugawara, though. You found yourself closest to him out of everyone. It may have been because he was the first you talked to, or maybe it was because he was one of the most easygoing people you’ve ever met. That, and you found yourself wanting to get closer to him. You wanted to know more about him.

Sugawara chuckled in response. “I suppose you’re right. We wouldn’t have made it this far without everyone,” he said softly, a tinge of fondness showing in his brown eyes. He proceeded to take out his schoolwork and pen, resting his chin in his palm as he read the words across the page of his assignment. Occasionally, you glanced over at him, admiring the way his eyebrows knit together in concentration, and how his hair brushed his cheeks whenever his head shifted in its position. How the grey tips of lashes kissed his bottom eyelids with each flutter of his chocolate hues. You even took a mental note that his lips, currently pursed in thought, were rather smooth and full in appearance.

A rogue thought about how those lips would feel against your own flitted across your mind. It brought a small pang to your chest, and you had to mentally slap yourself back into reality. You noticed these new feelings were starting to become more prevalent the longer you hung around Sugawara. You consulted your friends back home about it, and in their excitement, they insisted you had a crush on this guy (and demanded photos). Heart palpitations, heat-flooded cheeks, covert glances, and a desire for closeness in all aspects possible? All symptoms of infatuation, your personal love doctors concluded. You recalled when these signs first appeared about a month ago, after he offered to walk you home when practice had gone late into the night. Initially you declined, not wanting him to go out of his way when it was already dark outside. However, after seeing the soft look in his eyes as he declared he wanted to ensure you got home safely and that he didn’t mind the walk, your heart couldn’t help but give in and agree.

It was a tranquil night, accompanied only by the sound of crickets chirping and a cool, whispy breeze. About 15 minutes after having left campus, you were both seated on an aged bench at a small park, snacking on recent convenience store purchases to satisfy your growling stomachs. A comfortable silence settled in the air. The nightly surroundings were illuminated by the gentle glow of several nearby lampposts and stars that burned lightyears away.

Your gaze followed the tracks of a small bug crawling across the sidewalk in front of your feet. It skittered soundlessly against the pavement, eventually disappearing in the security of a bush. A gentle sigh took hold of your attention, and your eyes flickered over to your friend, who was peering up at the star-dusted evening sky.

“Do you know what you’re doing after graduation?” he asked, a hint of wonder in his voice.

You shook your head. “No clue, to be honest. You?”

He pursed his lips and took a sidelong glance at you before focusing back upwards. “Well, I’ve always wanted to be a teacher…”

“Seems fitting. Your Japanese lessons have been really helpful,” you pointed out, smiling.

The tips of his lips curved upwards as well. “Really? I’m glad. You’ve improved a lot, too. You’re a quick learner.”

“Heh, well I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Another comfortable silence fell upon you two before he spoke again. “I was thinking about how to keep in touch with everyone after we left, and how it’s a shame we’re leaving so soon after you arrived. I would’ve liked to know you better, too, but there’s only a few months left...”

His genuine words left a rosy tinge on your cheeks. As you were thinking of a response, you looked down, noticing how close your hand lay next to his. Heartrate quickening, you stammered, “Y-Yeah, I wish we had more time, too.. T-To hang around each other, I mean. But graduation doesn’t have to mean goodbye, right?”

“That’s true... You always know just what to say, you know that, (y/n)?” he turned his gaze on you and held out an extended pinky. “Promise to talk to me after graduating, then?”

You rolled your eyes playfully and huffed in amusement. Taking your own pinky and intertwining it with his, you nodded. “So long as you keep your end of the promise, too.”

“Of course.”

Sugawara’s voice brought you out of your momentary flashback. “(Y/n)? Can I ask you a question?”

Blinking your previous thoughts away and calming the warmth on your cheeks, you responded, “What’s up?”

He slid his assignment closer to you, pointing at a section he was having trouble with. “Here. I’m not sure if I’m doing this correctly..”

You leaned in, scooching towards him and closing in on the gap between you. Focused on the homework, you failed to notice how the brush of your shoulders made Sugawara’s body stiffen slightly. With your proximity, your scent easily wafted to his nose, and he could observe the closer details of your appearance. The hair tucked behind your ear exposed your cheekbone, looking soft to the touch. Your determined hues scanned the page, and he could visualize your thinking through your small, occasional self-nods. You looked cute and comfortable in the casual hoodie you wore, bringing him a strange, mixed sense of bashfulness and ease. His mind wandered, trying to envision how you would look if you wore any of his jackets, but his thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of your sweet voice and scribbles against paper.

“It sounds great, Suga! I just made a note there on how you can fix it; otherwise, it should be okay,” you gave him a reassuring smile as you slid his work back to him. You, however, didn’t shift back to your original position and instead stayed seated mere inches from the boy. Not that he minded, but…

“O-Oh, alright, thanks!”

It made concentrating during the rest of the study session a little difficult.

Occasionally you did get up, helping mostly the first and second years with some of their English assignments. His eyes would secretly (but c’mon, everyone but Hinata and Kageyama could tell) follow your figure, admiring the way you looked as you interacted happily with the others and did whatever you could to assist them. Yet you always returned to the same spot, near Suga. Close enough that everyone else on the team took notice (if they haven’t already), relayed the information via mental telephone, and secretly agreed to depart a bit earlier than they had anticipated.

“Oh, you guys are leaving already?” you asked everyone as they were packing up their belongings.

They all nodded in response, offering up their reasons for leaving earlier than the original time you set, which ranged from, “My parents wanted me home for dinner” to “My sister’s wasted and locked out of the house, nobody’s home—” (u good der Saeko)

Standing at your doorway, you waved to your friends, sending them off with a “I’ll see you at school!” as they waved back and filed out of your home. Looking over to Suga, who was still standing beside you, you wondered, “Oh, you’re staying?”

“Oh, yeah! I was surprised to see everyone leave so soon, but I was planning to head home in another hour. B-But I can go now if you need me to..!” he answered a bit shakily, waving around his hands in small, bashful gestures.

You shook your head and you waved your hand dismissively. “It’s okay, you’re more than welcome to stay for however long you need to.”

Settled back in the common area, you both tried to resume your schoolwork, but to no avail. Groaning, you leaned back, using your arms to support you from behind. “I’m tired of workingggggg.”

He sighed in agreement, resting an elbow on the table and propping up his head in a closed fist. “Same. Do you want to do something else?”

“Hmm..” you pondered aloud. “Do you want to see my room?”

Shrugging and responding with a “why not?”, you both stood up, leaving the common area to go to your room. You opened the door and stepped inside, Suga closely trailing behind you.

“Welcome to my room. Make yourself cozy,” you insisted as you sat on your bed and pat the spot next to you. He took your offer, taking a seat beside you and looking around your bedroom in curiosity.

“Something about this place really seems like you, (y/n).”

You raised an eyebrow at his comment. “Is it the messy pile of clothes in that basket or the neat desk I cleaned up this morning?”

He chuckled and shook his head. “I suppose you could say those are part of it. I just meant there’s a lot to you that you should feel comfortable sharing with others. People are complex and there’s so many sides to a person we discover along the way. I remember how timid you were in our first weeks of knowing each other, and now you’re getting along great with everyone and work hard to improve everyday. You were able to overcome a stressful repeat of entering highschool, but this time in another country, and adapted just fine! Your kindness and determination is admirable.”

Twiddling with your fingers, you felt a sheepish grin form on your face. “Aha, you’re too kind, Suga. You know I couldn’t have made these friends or adjust so well without your help. I was too worried about talking to anyone until you came up to me, so… Thank you.”

You risked a glance towards the boy, finding his chocolate gaze already set on you. If none of your interactions in the past month had set your heart ablaze, then certainly this moment would take the cake. Sugawara’s eyes flickered downwards briefly in a moment of hesitance, then locked again onto yours with a hint of an undetectable emotion lurking behind those irises. Neither of you could bring up any words to say. The only sounds present were the soft hums of your breathing and the low creak of your bed as you found yourselves shifting your weight in order to inch closer to one another.

His mind flooded with a cacophony of emotions, from crippling nervousness to an allure for risk-taking. He could barely come to terms with the current situation and what might happen. Maybe he was overthinking it. Surely being this close face-to-face with someone who you just happen to like doesn’t automatically mean they like you back and want to kiss you just as much. Perhaps you were just leaning in to rest your head on his shoulder; after all, you did seem tired from the events of today. Or, you were scooting close for a better look at his face so you could point out, “hey, you got a little something on your face.” Perhaps a crumb from the cracker he had earlier?

But when he took note of the way your eyes fluttered shut, eyelashes caressing the tops of your dusted cheeks, his doubts began to waver. Maybe this was the chance he’s been seeking out lately. Once Daichi deciphered Sugawara’s affections for you, eventually the whole team found out and began to silently root for him. Thankfully, despite their blatant attempts to help him out, you hadn’t noticed a thing. It made him wonder whether you were oblivious, or just didn’t like him, or both. However, in this moment, when it appeared as though maybe you returned his feelings, he felt he should—as Tanaka would say—shoot his shot.

A sudden knock on the door sent you both jumping 5 feet away from each other. Frazzled and wide-eyed, you choked out a weak, “H-Hello?” in response to the interruption. The door opened, revealing your parent/guardian, who peeked inside.

“Dinner’s ready. Would you like to stay and have it with us?” they were asking Suga.

Heart still racing from the fear that gripped it, he blinked in surprise. He piped out a polite no thank you, reasoning that he didn’t want to intrude.

“Nonsense, we’re happy to have you. Come soon.”

They closed the door and left, leaving you two in an awkward silence that was soon interrupted by the sound of your cough. “We should, uh, get going…”

Standing up, you reached for the door with Suga in tow. The tension in the air remained between the two of you throughout dinner. Nevertheless, Sugawara was able to leave a good impression on your family by being a good conversationalist, even earning a few laughs from your parent/guardian. It made your heart swell at how natural it was for him to be able to get along with others.

After dinner ended and he packed his things, you stepped outside with him to send him off, closing the door behind you. He was about to salute you with a “thanks for having me over” when you gave him a peck on the cheek so sudden that he didn’t have time to react before you were already making your way back into your house.

“Thanks for coming, Suga! I’ll see you at school! Let me know when you get home!” you exclaimed animatedly, shutting the door quickly to hide your embarrassment from your sudden actions. You leaned your back against it, instantly regretting what you did with tightly shut eyes. ‘Oh gawd how am I gonna face him at school tomorrow dhefjkg.’

But on the other side of the door, Suga stood dumbfounded, hovering a hand over the area your lips had touch. Though highly embarrassed, he felt a rush of elation pass over him like a humongous wave that never stopped crashing against the shores.

He was starting to really think it was a good idea to introduce himself to the cute new girl in class. Nice one, Suga.
