Can you "ring" + Majestic (the magic hero) please?

There's an old abandoned park on the edge of town. The playground equipment is rusty at best, slowly being overtaken by creeping vines and flourishing greenery. There are a few trails still clear enough for walking, but all of them lead to the worn down gazebo. It sits in the middle of the park, a perfect ring around the man-made structure, completely clear of flora.

Every time you pass it in the evening, you've been tempted to visit, drawn in by a strange desire to explore- but rumors about vagrants and illegal dealings generally hurry you along. Tonight is no exception. You pause, as you always do, eyes tracing the meandering path through the undergrowth to the gazebo, but it's later than your usual jaunt, already fully dark. You should head back, before the single streetlight decides to gutter out.

Movement makes you freeze. Sitting in the exact middle of the gazebo is a... a wizard. Or he looks like one, with the pointed hat and cloaked shoulders. Your lips part, your eyebrows raise, and then you curse when a trails of sparks zips around the man in a circle. His head jerks to the side, clearly looking your way, even if his eyes are covered by fabric wound about his head.

He says something, something quick and sharp, but the words are drowned out by a wave of energy that knocks you clean off your feet.

Animatic development and character changes/design

I really liked the first shot of the spotlight moving across the screen using a smear and felt that it made the film feel alot more dynamic so wanted to use this idea again to bring in some iconograph/ a symbol to break up the rhythm of my shots being static and move towards a transitional section. As previously mentioned I wanted to have the dentist become a fortune teller in the second part of my film, so I needed a transition which would fit with the timing of the poem. I used the dentist in the mouth idea as a gag where he pops out of the hole as I felt like it was a good way to draw attention to him, I then chose to show the dentist along with the narrator to establish them near each other and have the dentist become more significant through size, I felt that this would make a transition to the psychic more clear as the two characters would be used to illustrate the same line of the poem.

When designing the psychic I chose to make them a man as it would be more clear that it is the dentist, however this was tricky as many of the reference images I found were bohemian women. I found some male fortune tellers which I initially used for inspiration along with the bohemian woman look and tried to fuse them together. Below are my reference images.

I came to the character design below and although I wasnt sure why, I didnt like it very much.

I had designed this teller character for the second part of the project but felt it was off and may boarder on being an offensive stereotype as of the religious headwear. I discussed this with Alex in my tutorial and he agreed, suggesting I taking a different route and not to worry too much about him visually being a cliché of a psychic as the crystal ball and tarot cards would be enough to visually communicate these details.

Alex's advice was really helpful here as it gave me the freedom to take a new direction. Knowing the crystal ball and tarot cards were enough I focused on making them look quirky and magical and used wizards, mages and interesting character designs to improve the design. Here are a few of my reference images from my adjustments.

After analysing these character designs I used a lot of details which I liked from them and the previous mood board. A man with a long face and a beard, the Moebius hat, long shaggy robes with symbols on them, hanging jewellery and a serious but blank expression were key details I wanted to include.

Above is my initial sketch of the wizard character, I felt this design was really strong, it would be hard to animate for me in the time which I had but I didnt plan to have it move around much so I went with it. I really like how clearly mystical they are and found them to have a really strong silhouette, their hat with flowing robes from it was my favourite design quirk as it gives them a religious/mystical look without tying them to any real world groups or recognizable belief systems.

I cleaned up the design as seen below and really liked the way it shaped out.
