Modernizing Mid-Century Homes in Scottsdale: Kitchen and Bathroom Updates
Scottsdale, known for its stunning desert landscapes and rich architectural history, is home to many mid-century modern homes. These properties, with their iconic clean lines, open spaces, and integration with nature, are highly sought after. Updating the kitchens and bathrooms of these homes to meet contemporary needs while preserving their original charm can be a delicate balance. Here's how to modernize mid-century homes with stylish and functional kitchen and bathroom design in Scottsdale and Phoenix, AZ.
Embracing the Mid-Century Aesthetic
Before diving into specific updates, it's essential to understand and embrace the mid-century modern aesthetic. Characterized by simplicity, functionality, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, this style often features:
Clean lines and geometric shapes
Natural materials like wood and stone
Large windows and open floor plans
Minimalist yet functional designs
When updating the kitchen and bathroom or home remodeling in Phoenix and Mesa, AZ, these elements should guide one's design choices.
Kitchen Updates: Balancing Style and Function
Open-Concept Layout
Mid-century homes often feature open floor plans, which can be enhanced by removing non-load-bearing walls to create a more spacious and connected kitchen area. This not only makes the space feel larger but also encourages social interaction.
Natural Materials
Integrating natural materials such as wood, stone, and quartz can maintain the home's original charm. Opt for wooden cabinetry with sleek, flat fronts and consider using quartz countertops for a durable, modern touch. Open shelving with natural wood can add to the aesthetic while providing functional storage.
Modern Appliances
While mid-century homes are all about vintage charm, incorporating modern, energy-efficient appliances is crucial. Stainless steel appliances with clean lines can blend seamlessly with the design. Built-in appliances can also help maintain the kitchen's minimalist look.
Lighting
Proper lighting is essential in modernizing any kitchen. Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to highlight key areas. Pendant lights with geometric shapes or sleek lines can add a contemporary touch while maintaining the mid-century vibe.
Bathroom Updates: Combining Luxury and Practicality
Sleek Fixtures
Replace outdated fixtures with sleek, modern ones. Opt for chrome or matte black finishes to give the bathroom a fresh, contemporary look. Consider wall-mounted faucets and minimalist hardware to enhance the mid-century aesthetic.
Natural Stone and Tiles
Incorporate natural stone or ceramic tiles for flooring and walls. Hexagonal or subway tiles in neutral tones can add a timeless appeal. A statement tile wall in the shower area can be a focal point without overwhelming the space.
Freestanding Bathtub
A freestanding bathtub can serve as a luxurious centerpiece in one’s bathroom. Choose a design with clean lines that complement the mid-century style. Pair it with a modern floor-mounted faucet to complete the look.
Integrated Storage Solutions
Mid-century design values practicality, so integrated storage solutions are a must. Floating vanities with built-in storage can provide ample space without cluttering the bathroom. Open shelving with natural wood accents can also add both functionality and style.
Large Windows and Natural Light
If privacy allows, consider enlarging windows to let in more natural light. Skylights can also be an excellent addition, making the bathroom feel more open and connected to nature.
Modernizing mid-century homes in Scottsdale involves a careful balance between preserving the original charm and incorporating contemporary functionality. By focusing on clean lines, natural materials, and modern fixtures, one can update the kitchen and bathroom to meet today's standards while honoring the timeless mid-century aesthetic. Whether through open-concept layouts, sleek appliances, or natural stone finishes, these updates can transform one's home into a stylish and functional space that reflects its history and modern living needs.

Small Kitchen Floor Tile Ideas
Small Kitchen Tile Ideas: Enhance Your Space
Are you looking to update your small kitchen? One way to transform its appearance is by choosing the right floor tiles. Small kitchens require careful consideration when it comes to flooring options, as they can significantly impact the overall look and feel of the space. In this article, we will explore some creative and practical small kitchen floor tile ideas that can enhance your kitchen’s style and functionality.
Introduction
When it comes to small kitchen design, every element matters, including the flooring. The right choice of floor tiles can make a significant difference in the overall aesthetics and functionality of your kitchen space. Let’s explore some inspiring small kitchen floor tile ideas that can help you transform your kitchen into a stylish and inviting space.
Light-Colored Tiles for a Spacious Feel
In a small kitchen, light-colored tiles can create an illusion of space and make the area feel more open and airy. Opt for tiles in shades of white, beige, or light gray. These colors reflect light and create a sense of expansiveness, making your small kitchen appear larger than it actually is. Light-colored tiles also provide a neutral backdrop, allowing you to experiment with different decor styles and colors.
Patterned Tiles to Add Visual Interest
If you want to add a touch of personality and visual interest to your small kitchen, consider using patterned tiles. Geometric patterns, intricate designs, or bold motifs can inject character into your kitchen floor. Opt for patterns that complement your overall kitchen theme and color scheme. Patterned tiles can be used as an accent in the entire kitchen or as a focal point in specific areas, such as the kitchen island or dining nook.
Subway Tiles for a Classic Look
Subway tiles are a timeless choice that works well in both small and large kitchens. These rectangular tiles, usually in white or light colors, create a clean and classic look. The uniformity of subway tiles can make your small kitchen appear more organized and visually appealing. Additionally, the reflective surface of subway tiles can enhance the natural light in your kitchen, making it feel brighter and more spacious.
Mosaic Tiles for a Unique Design
For those seeking a unique and artistic touch, mosaic tiles are an excellent option. Mosaic tiles come in various materials, including glass, ceramic, and natural stone. Their small size allows for intricate designs and patterns that can add a striking visual element to your kitchen floor. Mosaic tiles are especially effective when used as a border or a decorative centerpiece within a larger tiled area.
Large Format Tiles for a Seamless Look
If you prefer a clean and seamless appearance, consider using large format tiles in your small kitchen. These oversized tiles minimize grout lines, creating a smoother and more streamlined surface. Large format tiles can visually enlarge your kitchen space and provide a modern and sophisticated look. Choose neutral or light colors to maintain a sense of openness and continuity.
Geometric Tiles for Modern Charm
For a contemporary and trendy look, opt for geometric tiles in your small kitchen. Geometric patterns, such as hexagons or triangles, can add a touch of modern charm and visual intrigue. Mix and match different geometric tile shapes and colors to create a unique and eye-catching design. Geometric tiles work well as a focal point, such as a kitchen backsplash or an area rug-like pattern on the floor.
Hexagonal Tiles for a Contemporary Touch
Hexagonal tiles are a popular choice for adding a contemporary touch to small kitchen floors. Their unique shape creates an interesting visual effect, making them stand out from traditional square or rectangular tiles. Hexagonal tiles can be arranged in various patterns, including honeycomb or staggered layouts, to create a distinctive look. Choose hexagonal tiles in bold colors or natural stone finishes to suit your kitchen’s style.
Checkerboard Tiles for a Retro Vibe
If you’re a fan of retro aesthetics, checkerboard tiles can evoke a sense of nostalgia and vintage charm in your small kitchen. The classic black and white checkerboard pattern is a timeless choice that adds a playful and stylish element to the floor. You can also explore other color combinations, such as gray and white or pastel hues, to create a retro-inspired look that complements your kitchen decor.
Wood-Look Tiles for Warmth and Durability
Wood flooring is a popular choice for kitchens due to its warmth and natural appeal. However, real wood may not be the most practical option for small kitchens due to its susceptibility to moisture and stains. A great alternative is wood-look tiles, which mimic the appearance of real wood while offering the durability and moisture resistance of tiles. Choose wood-look tiles in various shades and textures to achieve the desired aesthetic for your kitchen.
Natural Stone Tiles for Timeless Elegance
For a touch of timeless elegance, natural stone tiles are an excellent choice for small kitchen floors. Options like marble, travertine, or slate can add a luxurious and sophisticated feel to your kitchen. Natural stone tiles are available in various colors and finishes, allowing you to select the perfect match for your kitchen style. Keep in mind that natural stone requires regular maintenance and sealing to preserve its beauty.
Porcelain Tiles for Easy Maintenance
When it comes to practicality and ease of maintenance, porcelain tiles are a top choice for small kitchen floors. Porcelain tiles are durable, stain-resistant, and require minimal upkeep. They come in a wide range of styles, including various colors, patterns, and textures. You can find porcelain tiles that resemble natural stone, concrete, or even wood, providing versatile options to suit your kitchen’s design.
Ceramic Tiles for Versatility
Ceramic tiles are another versatile option for small kitchen floors. They are available in an extensive range of colors, sizes, and finishes, allowing you to customize your kitchen floor according to your preferences. Ceramic tiles are known for their durability and affordability, making them an excellent choice for budget-conscious homeowners. From glossy to matte finishes, ceramic tiles offer endless possibilities for creating your desired kitchen look.
Tips for Choosing the Right Tile Size
Choosing the right tile size is crucial when it comes to small kitchen floors. Here are some tips to consider:
Opt for smaller tiles: Smaller tiles, such as 2×2 or 4×4 inches, can create the illusion of a larger space by reducing the number of grout lines.
Consider larger tiles for fewer grout lines: If you prefer larger tiles, choose sizes like 12×12 or 18×18 inches to minimize the appearance of grout lines.
Use diagonal patterns: Installing tiles diagonally can make your kitchen appear wider and more open.
Play with tile orientation: Experiment with different tile orientations, such as herringbone or basketweave patterns, to add visual interest and dimension.
Conclusion
Choosing the right floor tiles for your small kitchen can make a significant impact on its overall appearance and functionality. From light-colored tiles for a spacious feel to patterned tiles for visual interest, there are numerous options to suit your style preferences. Consider factors such as durability, maintenance, and the overall aesthetic of your kitchen when making your tile selection. With careful planning and creative choices, you can transform your small kitchen into a beautiful and functional space.

Considerations for Bathroom Tile Selection in a Small Bathroom Remodel
Introduction
Selecting the right tiles for your small bathroom remodel is crucial for creating a visually appealing and functional space. In this article, we will discuss the key considerations to keep in mind when choosing bathroom tiles for a small bathroom remodel, ensuring that your design not only maximises space but also reflects your personal style.
Size and Scale
In a small bathroom, the size and scale of the tiles play a significant role in creating the illusion of a larger space. Opt for smaller tiles, such as mosaic or subway tiles, as they can make the room appear more spacious. Larger tiles can overwhelm the visual aesthetics and make the bathroom feel cramped. Additionally, consider using the same tile on both the floor and walls to create a cohesive and uninterrupted look, which can visually expand the space.
Colour and Tone
Colour and tone choices have a profound impact on the overall atmosphere of your small bathroom. Lighter colours, such as whites, pastels, and neutrals, reflect more light and create an airy and open feeling. This can help to visually enlarge the space. On the other hand, darker colours can add depth and create a cosy ambiance but may make the room feel smaller. Consider incorporating a pop of colour or patterned tiles as accents to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Texture and Finish
The texture and finish of bathroom tiles not only affect the visual aesthetics but also contribute to the overall functionality and safety. In a small bathroom, opt for tiles with a slip-resistant or matte finish to minimise the risk of accidents, especially in areas prone to water splashes. Textured tiles can also add depth and visual appeal, but be mindful of the texture's scale so it doesn't overpower the limited space.
Grout Lines and Patterns
The choice of grout lines and tile patterns can significantly impact the visual perception of a small bathroom. Select a grout colour that matches or closely complements the tile colour to create a seamless and unified look. Choosing a grout colour that contrasts too much with the tiles can create a visually busy and cluttered appearance. When it comes to patterns, simple and minimalistic designs work best in small bathrooms. Consider straight or diagonal layouts to elongate the space, or opt for vertical patterns to create an illusion of height.
Conclusion
When remodelling a small bathroom, thoughtful consideration of tile selection is essential to maximise space and create an aesthetically pleasing environment. By carefully choosing the size, colour, texture, and patterns of bathroom tiles, you can transform your small bathroom into a stylish and functional retreat that feels more spacious and visually appealing.

Matte Black Kitchen Design Ideas 2023
If you want to make a bold statement in your kitchen space, then a matte black color scheme is the way to go. However, you must keep in mind that it will make the room darker so you need to have ample natural light in your space.
The color is also not easy to maintain so you need to consider your personal necessities. Thankfully, you can easily find thousands of kitchen design ideas in this color that will help you create the perfect kitchen for your home.
Daring and Stylish
If you’re looking to make a bold style statement in your kitchen, consider going for matte black. It’s a great way to add an edge to your design and make your space look sophisticated and elegant.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that matte black can make a room feel gloomy, so you need to balance the dark color with lots of light. You can also try using contrasting colors to balance the dark tone in your kitchen.
Another bold way to update your kitchen is by adding a textured backsplash. You can use a variety of different backsplash tiles, from a simple subway tile to a mosaic or a herringbone pattern.
Natural stone countertops, wood cabinets and storage, and metal accents will continue to be big trends in 2023. It’s expected that natural and decorative stones like granite, quartzite, and marble will remain popular.
Sleek and Modern
Whether you’re looking to create a sleek and modern atmosphere in your kitchen space or simply want to add an element of drama, a matte black color scheme is ideal. This hue is highly versatile and can be used to accent light cabinetry or even as a base color in a monochromatic design scheme.
The dark color is also a great choice for appliances, as it can easily blend in with stainless steel designs. Plus, you can opt for a single matte black appliance for a more minimalist look that still packs a punch.
Matte finishes are also less prone to finger marks than glossy ones, so they are a great option for busy kitchens that require minimal care. And, they can help you achieve a sleek and modern look without the need for extensive remodels.
Industrial
An industrial atmosphere can be achieved in your kitchen space with a matte black color scheme. This will not only create a sophisticated look, but it will also make the space feel more open and spacious.
This type of design focuses on raw and weathered materials, like brick, steel and timber. These are innately durable and their exterior appearance conveys that, giving this style its solidity.
Another way to achieve a kitchen with an industrial theme is through the use of large window frames, which will allow natural light to flood the room. The oversized window frames will visually enlarge the space and make it appear more spacious.
This style is also perfect for a small apartment or a bachelor pad, as it will give the space a very stylish feel without compromising on comfort. It also makes a great choice for people who want to add some personality to their kitchen without going too crazy.
Luxury Look
Black is one of the hottest colors and finishes in kitchen design right now. It’s also a great way to add class and sophistication to your space.
The key to creating a luxury look in your kitchen is to find the right balance between dark features and light neutrals. The matte black cabinetry in the featured photo, for example, is balanced by huge glass windows that invite a lot of natural light into the space.
But if you have a smaller space or don’t want to commit to a total matte black kitchen, a few subtle accents are all that’s necessary.
Instead of painting your countertops and backsplash a solid matte black, paint them light gray to lighten the overall appearance of the space.
You can also choose a different color for your cabinets or counters, and then use black hardware to make a bold statement. Knobs, pulls, and cup drawer pulls are a smart way to add the drama that this finish is known for without going overboard.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a kitchen remodeling project take?
The work should take about three weeks once the cabinets are made. However, custom cabinet design and manufacturing can take up to months. The entire process can take many months from start to finish.
What’s the first step to renovate a kitchen?
Because every kitchen renovation project is unique, there is no single answer. It is essential to have a clear understanding of your unique goals and needs before designing a new kitchen.
This may involve meeting with a professional designer or architect to discuss your ideas, taking measurements of your current kitchen space, and/or creating a mood board or inspiration folder with images of kitchens that appeal to you.
Once you have a clear idea of what you want, you can start to plan your budget and get estimates from potential contractors. To avoid stress and keep your kitchen renovation on schedule, it is essential to create a timeline.
If you are working with a professional chef or architect, they will likely be the ones leading the design planning process. But it is still important that you clearly define your goals and requirements from the beginning. This will ensure that your final design is in line with your expectations, and that you are satisfied with the end result.
It is important to measure the kitchen space including its total square footage, as well the dimensions of individual areas such cabinets, countertops, appliances, windows, doors, and windows. It’s a good idea if you note any existing structural elements such as load-bearing walls and support beams that cannot be removed. If possible, it can be helpful to create a floor plan layout so that you can visualize how the new design will come together.
An inspiration folder or mood board is a great way to narrow down your ideas for kitchen design. Pinterest is a great resource for images of kitchens that you like, so take some time to browse there. You can also tear out pages from magazines, collect fabric swatches or paint chips, and save any other visual elements that inspire you. This will provide you with valuable information as you begin to plan your renovation.
Once you have a clear idea of how your new kitchen should look, it’s time for you to begin thinking about the timeline and budget. How much do you have to invest in this project? What are your must haves and nice-to-haves in a renovation? When do you need the renovation to be completed? These questions will help guide you through the planning process.
If you plan to renovate your kitchen yourself, consider the cost for materials, appliances, cabinets and countertops. You’ll also want to consider the time it will take to complete the project and any potential disruptions to your daily routine. If you’re hiring a contractor to handle the renovation, they will likely provide you with a detailed estimate that includes all necessary costs and a timeline for completion.
Creating a timeline for your kitchen renovation is key to staying on track and avoiding any stressful surprises. Once you have a clear idea of when each phase should occur, it is possible to start putting together a detailed schedule. In case of unexpected delays, be flexible with your timeline.
This guide will help you to create a clear plan for your next kitchen renovation. This will help ensure that the final result is everything you’ve been dreaming of and that the process runs smoothly from start to finish.
Which kitchen layout is the most efficient?
If you have the space, an L-shaped Kitchen with an Island is the best.
What should you do first when remodeling your kitchen?
This question is not easy to answer because everyone has different priorities. Consider the space’s layout, what appliances you need, how many cabinets you need, and your storage needs.
After you’ve chosen your must-haves you can take a look at other kitchen designs to get an idea of the options. It is a good idea not to rush into buying big-ticket items, such as cabinets or appliances, and then move on to the small details, like light fixtures and paint colors.
It is important to take things one by one so that your kitchen remodel goes exactly as you planned.
What should I do when I’m planning a kitchen remodel?
Whether you’re remodelling an existing space or designing a dream kitchen from scratch, there are plenty of decisions.
Spend some time online looking for inspiration before you start. Look online for inspiration photos. Take down ideas for design. With a pen, paper and a pencil, draw out where each element will be located.
Think about what you could do to improve these spaces. What could you make better? What would you do differently? Ask someone who is an expert in your field to help you get creative.
Once you’ve figured out what you want to accomplish, it’s time to start. Start with the basics. Get rid of all unnecessary clutter. Get rid of appliances that you don’t use often. Replace old fixtures by newer ones.
Next, take a look at areas of your kitchen that are too small. This could mean looking for places that don’t have enough storage or countertop space. These are the places you should maximize. These spots could be turned into wine cellars, or pantries.
Lighting is an important consideration. Is there an area that could be lit brighter? Perhaps a wall light would brighten a dark corner.
Once you have compiled your list of improvements, the fun begins: implementing them.
Don’t worry if it’s not easy at first. Don’t stop working until it is all figured out. You will never be satisfied unless you love using it every day.
If I’m looking for a new kitchen, where do I start?
It would be best to start by creating a list of your wants and needs. This will make it easier to communicate with potential contractors, remodelers, or kitchen designers.
Budget: How much will you spend on your new kitchen in the next year?
Size: What is your kitchen’s size? What size kitchen do you need?
Layout: How do you arrange your kitchen? Will you need to change the layout of your kitchen?
– Appliances: Which appliances would you like in your new kitchen?
– Storage – How will you store all your food, supplies and equipment in your new kitchen?
Style: What kind of kitchen style do you prefer? Traditional, contemporary, rustic, etc.
– Colors: What colours do you want in your new kitchen?
Now you are ready to start planning your new kitchen.

How To
These are the 8 Steps to Kitchen Remodeling For Beginners
These steps should be followed to start a DFY project with Beginners:
Remodeling your kitchen involves three steps. First, you need to decide whether you want an entire kitchen renovation or just replacing fixtures and appliances. The second step is to determine what type of kitchen design best suits your lifestyle. Third, choose between a DIY project or hiring professionals to complete the job.
The next step is to choose the type of kitchen that you want. Do you want a traditional kitchen with cabinets, countertops, and appliances? Perhaps you prefer modern designs that have minimal storage and sleek lines. Are you interested in installing a large island or adding a breakfast bar? Once you’ve chosen the layout, material and finish you want, it’s time to find a professional contractor who will help you install it.
Although the kitchen is the heart and soul of every home it is often overwhelming for homeowners because of the many decisions that they have to make before they begin their project. There are easy ways for homeowners to get started.
Decide if You Want to Renovate or Replace – The first step is to determine whether you want to complete a kitchen renovation or replace some of the appliances and fixtures. You will need to consider the costs of deconstruction, new countertops, cabinets, flooring, lighting, and appliances if you plan to completely gut the space.
Determine Your Budget – The first thing you should do is calculate how much you can spend on your kitchen remodel. This includes everything from the cost of labor and supplies to the amount you can afford.
Choose your Layout – Once you’ve decided how much you can afford, the next step will be to choose where you want to install your new kitchen. There are several different layouts, including open concept, peninsula, galley, L-shape, U-shape, and corner. Each layout has pros and cons. It is crucial to find the one that meets your needs.
Choose Your Materials – Now it’s time to choose your materials. This covers everything from cabinets and countertops, to flooring and lighting. There are many options so it is crucial to research and find the material that suits your needs.
Hire Professionals – Finally, once you’ve selected your materials, you’ll want to find a professional specializing in kitchen construction. A reliable contractor will make sure that everything runs smoothly, right from design to installation. They will provide support services to ensure that there are no problems.
Enjoy! Congratulations! You have reached the end of your kitchen remodel process. Enjoy it! If you love your new kitchen, you won’t mind spending hours cooking delicious meals. If you aren’t sure about the layout of your new kitchen, don’t be afraid to take some time to experience it. You’ll be able to judge if your remodel was worthwhile.

Lovely, Bergdorf House rustic chalet in Interlaken, Switzerland, built in 1897 and recently refurbished. Owners Mirko and Stephane enjoy entertaining all summer long in their gorgeous home.
The enclosed porch makes a cozy office for Mirko.
Isn’t this a lovely room? When it was renovated, they saved a lot of the original charm.
Interesting contemporary feature on the fireplace.
The dining room is set up to host friends and there’s an enlarged photo of the former serving staff.
The remodeled kitchen has open shelving and metal counters and cabinetry, but the dark walls, subway tile, and cozy lighting give it a vintage feel.
The stairs are original.
All the bedrooms were redecorated. The couple hosts a costume party in summer and also turns the home into a bed & breakfast.
Lovely room and a terrace with a view. This room has a sink and the wood walls were painted gray.
I like this room the best with it’s cool blue flamingo.
Main bath with a new sink and subway tile.

For $595,000, a modern two-bedroom Berkshires getaway
Marni Elyse Katz – Globe Correspondent
March 25, 2021 1:28 pm
If you’re looking for a very manageable, absolutely adorable Berkshires hideaway that doesn’t need even a finishing touch, we’ve found it. Bonus: the inky black/green battenboard exterior siding changes color depending on how the sun hits it.
This 880-square foot ranch house with full basement, built in 1960, sits on 1.9 wooded acres beside Prospect Lake in rural Egremont, population 1,100. The current owner spent the months during lockdown last year lovingly renovating the two-bedroom, one-bath inside and out and will even sell you the furnishings.
A simple but well-proportioned brick fireplace done in a sooty shade anchors the great room, which is lined in warm white vertical paneling. Black window frames solidify the farmhouse feel, as do the solid white oak floors. Double sliders lead to a refurbished deck that stretches the length of the house.
On the other side of the room, a dining space with a niche just waiting for a built-in sideboard can accommodate a full-size table below the George Nelson pendant light. Shoe shelves and coat hooks tuck efficiently into a shallow corner, creating a serviceable entryway.
A small hall with open shelves for extra storage leads to two bedrooms and a newly enlarged bath with classic white subway tiles and a black penny tile floor, a walk-in shower with a fixed glass panel, and a pedestal sink.
The new kitchen with bright white IKEA cabinetry, Imperial Danby stone counters, and stainless-steel appliances is at the end of the house. A glossy green, stacked vertical tile backsplash reaches one-third of the way up the wall around a large window that frames the wooded view. There’s even space for a café table in front of the slider.
Christian Deckert of Berkshire Property Agents listed 76 Prospect Lake Road in Egremont for $595,000 on March 18. Additional amenities include new heating and central air conditioning, fiber high-speed Internet and cell service, and a detached two-car garage. Finally, the lake’s kayak launch is just a stroll away, and Catamount Ski Area is a seven-minute drive.
See more photos of the property below:

Verbank House in Dutchess County, NY
Sep 15, 2020
Verbank House
Architect: Jill Porter
Location: New York State, USA
Problem: How can we transform a colonial 80’s home into a modern farmhouse?
Exterior Solution: A new entry porch/roof, coupled with new board and batten siding, black windows, and modern lighting, give the home a crisp, modern farmhouse feel.
Interior Solution: Staying true to the rural roots of Dutchess County, the interior invokes a farmhouse feel without relying on nostalgia. Rather, design choices draw from a palette of modern and bold materials.
Seeking a country getaway from NYC, Jill Porter’ clients were drawn to this rural property as it has beautiful acreage, a pond, and privacy. Verbank House, however, was in dire need of work. Not only was it dowdy and dated, but the home’s interior layout left the kitchen and dining room divorced from the beautiful grounds.
In order to lift this house out of the early 80s, the clients wanted an exterior makeover with a modern farmhouse feel, and a new interior imbued with sunlight and design-rich finishes: bold and elegant materials, colors, and patterns. Mindful of the overall budget, any changes needed to be surgical, as my clients did not want to enlarge or alter the existing footprint of the house.
To complete this transformation, we first considered the proportions and volumes of the front elevation, as the front entry was dwarfed by the long roof. To this end, we broke up the existing roof line with an a new entry porch and gable roof. Although the change was limited to the entry, the new entry proportions changed the complexion of the whole front facade. New board and batten siding, black windows, and vintage lights provided the finishing touches, giving the home a crisp, modern appearance.
The back side of the house was nothing short of awful, due mostly to an ill-conceived addition. Oversized dormers sat on top of a screened-in porch, unusable due to it’s long, skinny proportions. The kitchen had no access to the exterior, nor broad views of the beautiful grounds. And the closest bathroom to the pool and patio required a walk through the screened-in porch, family room, and kitchen — a long trip for wet feet!
Changes to the back facade went hand-in-hand with the changes to the interior layout.
Long arrays of windows and doors were added to the dining room, kitchen, and former screened-in porch (now part of the family room). The new windows and doors firmly establish a relationship between the interior and exterior, frame views of the property, and wash the interior with sunlight. Furthermore, interior spaces were shifted and reconfigured, allowing space for a mudroom, as well as a new bathroom with access to the outdoor patio and pool.
Interior spaces were designed for family living – neither fussy nor precious, but designed with an eye towards color, pattern, and whimsy. Staying true to the rural roots of Dutchess County, the interior invokes a farmhouse feel without relying on nostalgia. Rather, design choices draw from a palette of modern and bold materials.
Kitchen: The focal point of the renovation work, the kitchen is a joyful space marked by rich and natural materials: custom brass hardware and range hood, marble tiles with hand lithographed patterns, gorgeous slabs of Breccia Capraia stone, and white oak furniture. Upper cabinets were completely eliminated to maximize windows and sunlight, and to give the space an airy feel. Where there is upper storage, we opted for open shelving with custom brass supports — not only beautiful, but family friendly, as the open shelves provide easy access to everyday plates and glasses.
Mudroom and bathrooms: A combination of high and low materials (i.e. affordable subway wall tiles with beautiful pattered concrete tiles), each space has it’s own feel, and the patterned floor tiles conceal the mess inevitably left by a family with kids and pets.
Living room bookshelves: Avid readers, my clients needed shelves for the growing library of books. We designed new shelves — almost 13’ long — with custom brass brackets. The brackets were conceived as a folded piece of paper, and function as both bookends (giving structure and order to the long array of books), as well as the bookshelf’s primary form of support.
Working with my clients was a total joy. They presented me with many of the material selections, and together, we composed an interior that feels true to place, yet unique and personal.

Ampersand 2002, 17,000 custom-printed ceramic tiles (12" square). Commissioned by the Toronto Transit Commission for the Sheppard and Leslie Subway Station. Every wall of the new Sheppard/Leslie Subway Station is covered with one of 17,000 custom-printed tiles. The tiles feature the handwriting of different members of the public writing the words "Sheppard" and "Leslie", which is the intersection where the station is located. During the month of May 1997, the public was invited to fill out ballots that were then enlarged and turned into glazed ceramic tiles. 3,500 different ballots were selected and each was made in an edition 5 tiles to create the 17,000 tiles that make up the artwork. The work plays off the dichotomy between community and individuality and is an homage to the unique yet anonymous contribution of those who participated

Kitchen Makeovers - Which One is Right For You?
If you have ever longed to redesign your kitchen, you may have seen the TV show Kitchen Makeovers. The show showcases several talented designers who make kitchens look new. Choosing the right design and materials can make your home more stylish, functional, and comfortable. But how do you know which kitchen makeover is right for you? Here are some ideas. To begin, take time to live with your current kitchen for a few years before making any changes.
The first makeover on Kitchen Makeovers shows how to remove wallpaper, paint walls, and create hidden storage. A simple kitchen makeover can change a lot. For example, one show featured a kitchen makeover done by designer Stewart Davis. The kitchen's former layout had a wall between it and the dining room. The renovation removed the wall, added 50 square feet to the kitchen, and changed the color palette. The result is a kitchen that reflects the owner's personality.
Another renovation involves knocking down a wall. Taylor Bahelda, who lives in a home in Louisville, Colorado, had an old kitchen with little storage space and an unattractive layout. She hoped to create a more functional and family-friendly space. Her husband and dad helped her create a design that included new navy cabinets, a larger island, and a table big enough for the entire family to sit around.
Another makeover includes removing an awkward wall and replacing it with an open space. Eliminated the dated cabinets and created an open, welcoming space. New appliances, wood shelves, and bright paint colors all gave the space a modern, spacious look. It's now easier to cook and entertain in the kitchen than ever before. If you have a small kitchen, you can have the same look and feel by using white subway tiles.
For a quick makeover, consider making a few DIY improvements. Then, you'll have a beautiful new kitchen in no time. With just a few dollars, you can brighten up a dark and dingy kitchen. You can even paint your refrigerator blue if you don't have a lot of money to spend. The options are endless and your kitchen will look as beautiful as ever. You can even get a kitchen makeover for less than $500!
One eco-conscious design/build firm, Eco-Home, renovated a Victorian-style rowhouse in Philadelphia. The firm's team connected the kitchen and breakfast room for a more open, more functional space. The new cabinetry gave the kitchen a clean, updated look, and the use of patterned cement floor tiles in the backsplash added color and durability. With these changes, you can now enjoy your kitchen while keeping your budget in mind.
Another simple kitchen makeover idea involves replacing old, small windows with larger ones. Replacing small windows with larger ones is much easier than it seems and can open up your kitchen. There are even 30 easy ways to revamp your kitchen. Make sure you take your time and don't let size intimidate you! You will enjoy your new space! So don't be intimidated if you aren't sure what to do first!
While a kitchen makes the heart of a home, you don't want to sacrifice your home's history. A kitchen makeover can honor both the history of the home and the design. For example, one homeowner chose a retro look, but upgraded it with modern appliances and a functional layout. A kitchen makeover can create a more functional space for the whole family to use. And if you're tired of your current kitchen, try incorporating modern features into your space.
After deciding to go with a more modern design, consider adding an island. The addition of an island is the perfect way to open up your space and display serving pieces. Another kitchen makeover idea is to install a new range hood. An open shelf can help display serving pieces while an enlarged island creates extra storage. Modern appliances and a custom-built range hood make the space look brand new. But if you're unsure about the DIY route, consider hiring a professional for the job.
An older kitchen was too small for the family to live in. Fortunately, the addition at the back of the house gave them the extra space they needed. Despite the lack of space, however, the tiny island hardly served as an eat-in kitchen. The homeowners opted to get a total kitchen makeover to update the space. The new kitchen boasts an open layout with high-performance features and a sleek, modern aesthetic.

Project Overview
The Subject Property
Kitchen Remodel Park Ridge, IL
The fine designers at Regency Home Remodeling know that a city kitchen can be a challenge. So when the owners of this Park Ridge kitchen wanted to create a bright, light space, Regency’s team knew that would mean opening up the space by removing a wall section between the kitchen and dining room, as well as doing a little rearranging of the space.
The dark, enclosed kitchen was brightened up with Regency’s white shaker cabinets that soared to the ceiling, creating extra space where blank soffits once loomed. The removal of the dividing wall allowed the kitchen counterspace to be enlarged with a functional peninsula, with all the counters taking on a contemporary edge with Daltile’s OQ44 quartz countertops, backed by the modern lines of the white subway tile backsplash.
New stainless steel appliances from ABT perfectly accented the clean white look, with storage space expanded by moving the new refrigerator. Modern ceiling can lights replaced the old-fashioned central ceiling fixture, and trendy brushed brass fixtures from Studio 41 completed the transition. The result was a kitchen that would be at home in any modern city setting, all completed within the promised time frame and budget requirements, thanks to Regency’s special factory-pricing arrangement with its suppliers.
