Reading Project Hail Mary and its driving me up the WALL how its seems so easy for the main character and the alien to establish lanuage communication with each other. Like yes the scene with the numbers and atoms balls makes sense only then its just a hard cut to "over the next several hours we expand our vocubulary to several thosuand words" and then a few chapters later ("several days" + a least a week) theyre talking in short but full sentences about each other's culture, using the word culture. How the hell do you explain the concept of "culture" to a spider made of rock, to the point where you can accurately understand what that word itself means? How do you explain the concepts "bad" and "good" and "sad". What if the "notes" the alien makes are different based on alien tense or alien mood or alien social niceities. What if they have words that have multiple meanings and dont one to one corelate. Mr Weir I know youre a software engineer & scientist by trade but can I at LEAST show you a clip from Star Trek Next Generation S3 EP2 The Ensigns of Command.
