T20 World Cup - Super 12 - Group 1 - England vs South Africa - Sharjah 

South Africa inflicted the first group stage defeat on England but England out-batted South Africa to deprive them of a place in the semi finals of the T20 World Cup in Sharjah on Friday night.

Making a total of 189, the South Africans needed to beat England while restricting them to 131 to increase their run-rate over Australia.

The South Africans won but failed to win a place in the semi finals with England who had already qualified, finishing on 179 for 8 in the 20 overs.

South Africa will thus be the only team in the Super 12s that recorded four wins for just a solitary loss and did not make it to the semi finals while Australia, the only team that beat them, grabbed the available slot after beating the West Indies with a superior run-rate.

The South Africans also captured some of the finest moments in Saturday's qualifying round match when fast bowler Kagiso Rabada made a dramatic defence of the last 14 runs in the final over as he roped in a hat-trick by taking the wickets of Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and Chris Jordan as his team won by 10 runs.

Three overs prior to his hat-trick, Rabada faced the ignominy of conceding three successive sixes to Liam Livingstone as England turned the tide and fell in line with the asking rate.

England in the process joined Australia in taking the two semi final berths offered in their group 1, with South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Bangladesh being the teams that were knocked out.

Earlier put into bat South Africa made a match-winning 189 for 2 in the 20 overs after they lost opener Reza Hendricks for 2.
