Summary:

April 1940, On a French battlefield, Hob Gadling doubts his will to persevere in being alive for the second time of his existence. He swallows morphine in the hope to soothe his horror-scarified mind, and summons a mirage of the stranger who occupied his thoughts as the patron of his immortality. In a Japanese psychiatric ward, Delirium of the Endless is alerted by Dream's irruption in her realm, who she found missing when she sought his company on her quest for the Prodigal. Disappointment overcomes her as she finds it was but an image of her brother conjured by a mortal, and so it does Hob when her eruption dismisses the vision. Delirium will not resign herself to her exponential loss of brothers however, neither will Hob Gadling withhold his help from any entity in distress, whether the stranger or his younger sister ; they just might hold the potential to liberate Morpheus between their four hands ...

Emotions, Walls, & Souls

You ever wake up one day and everything inside of you feels different? The way your skin crawls at something that didn’t have the same effect before, the way your ears process certain words you’ve heard before, the way your nose reacts to the same smell of your home as if it were something new...Even the way your heart beats for someone you had already known. Emotions are a son of a bitch. One day some can simply be your friend and the next? Well, I think you get the point. If you’re anything like me, I try to stray away from my emotions. I really try to just leave that shit on the back burner. I never try to have feelings for someone, and I guess you never really do. The difference between me and you? I block it off. I deny it. I fight it. I allow myself to believe that no one can break down the walls that I’ve built around myself. The home with a warm fire that I’ve build around my heart. Around my soul. I don’t want to let anyone in. That’s how people hurt you. And I? Well I don’t deal with pain very well. If you’re one of the people that can relate to me, then I guess you know exactly how I feel. One of the problems with having walls is that when they start to crumble, sometimes it happens so fast you don’t know how to stop it. It’s like have the iconic duo of the angel and demon on your shoulders. The angel is soft and gentle. Reassuring. Comforting. Telling you just to take it one day at a time and slowly patch it up. But the demon? He’s a persistent motherfucker. “Let's just grab a wrecking ball and knock the whole wall down! It’s already broken, why fix it?” He says. “Let it all come in”, he says. “Stop fighting and give up”, he says. Some of us can be calm and take the advice of an angel. However, some of us tend to give in to the demon, because he had been our friend for so long, we seem to think that he has all the answers. It’s like being lost within your conscious. When you no longer have the right answers, you put your mind into auto-pilot. Not even caring about what the worst that could happen is. Just as easy as the flip of the switch. Just...Turn. It. Off. The weakest thing about me is my soul, and as much as I wish I could live without it, I can’t.
