I just watched Ender's Game (2013)

Off to the field for two weeks tomorrow so I figured I’d do a hasty book post before shutting my eyes. Zero books were finished in February due to the big tempo at work, in the field, at home, and being on course myself. During the duration of March I was able to get the 3 books pictured down range. They included: 1. Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card; 2. Drunk - How we Sipped, Danced, and stumbled our way into Civilization by Edward Slingerland; and 3. The 33 Strategies of War by Robert Greene. With all my field time in the next month I don’t foresee any real reading taking place in April. A complaint I noticed I have about a lot of SFF TV/Movies is that at some point a character Does Magic/Science to the problem and it goes away. I just finished The Umbrella Academy S3 and I've been overhearing Stranger Things while I'm sewing and there's a lot of yelling and shooting beams of energy. Basically any time Viktor uses his power, for example.

Books also have yelling and beams but books can more easily spend the time to justify why the beam works. Gregan and other very hard sci-fi does this, even if it requires putting homework questions at the end of each chapter, but even softer stories like The Locked Tomb, Dune, hell, Xenocide EndersGame spend a while going into the physics and metaphysics underpinning the big trick, and even if the metaphysics of Xenocide is stupendously stupid, it's still there.

Some of this is just down to book length, even a short book is longer than a long movie, and it's less jarring to switch from the concrete narrative to the abstract concept space in a book. This distinction even shows up in books vs movie adaptations. Adaptations rarely have the time to set up these rules and limitations as thoroughly as a book.

Books can of course just as easily throw out magic powers that solve problems, but they're much more well suited to avoid that pitfall. As a contrast, you don't have to really understand anything about the Force to get what happens in the prequel and mainline Star Wars movies, swordfighting, romance, and political and military power is pretty much all you need to get you there.
