Let me tell you about FIRE:

I was gonna write a giant essay about how I use fire/Tommy lighting a fire repetitively in my fics, quoting the multiple times, meaning of each, how they interlock with his capability, capacity, libido (life drive not just sex drive), etc...but that's probably overkill XD.

Here's the short version: I do use references to fire or the act of lighting fires (not lighting fires) very deliberately. This was motivated by, and ties into, Tommy also doing the same in the show - and I pay special attention to when he can and can't light those fires, and who he might choose to ask to light a fire. For example, in series, there are times when it's John and Arthur, or even Jeremiah (as it comes to Ruby's pyre, which I'll elaborate on because it was such a powerful scene - from what I've been able to find re European Romani funereal tradition, albeit I coudln't *specifically* find period-references to Angloromani or Irish Traveller ritual, that *should* have been Tommy lighting it. Research does have an interesting split between whether it's necessary to stay to watch a funeral pyre burn til the end (as the fam did with Polly) or whether it's actually more respectful/acceptable to walk away early (turn your back on death to face instead to life)).

Then, to add another layer to this symbolic importance of Fire, when I started researching narrowboats and what daily life was like on narrowboats pre-electricity, I also then discovered how important maintaining the stove/fire in the living quarters was. The stoves were Aga or Aga-style, and they take forever to heat up. Basically, you get them going over hours, and *keep* them going, because if they go out you have ages before you can build the heat up again to something useable. And given you could reasonably freeze to death on the water, in an uninsulated boat, in the north, in the night, in winter, the fire/stove seemed very important.

I don't know how much the Shelbys would have been in the worst case northern-style winter conditions in the midlands, but irrespective, England is cold and living on water is freezing: the idea of the kids needing to permanently tend this dangerous and all-consuming, hungry thing dwelling on the boat really appealed to me for multiple reasons - especially because there's no modulation. Either they'd be freezing in those living quarters, or they'd be walking into a hotter-than-hell situation (not possible to temperature-modulate all that well), and they'd have to consciously *keep that fire burning* in a hotter than hell situation, because the heat of hell, at least, was being alive.

So yeah, a secret: if there's a reference to fire or lighting fires in my fics, there's a weight of thinking behind it even if it seems random.

I cannot reconcile the ending of Endeavour with anything that makes sense. And as much as I love some good old whump, I think it would make a lot more sense if they'd left out the stabbing altogether. In fact, I think it was there solely to facilitate Morse collapsing before the ad break to ensure everyone would keep watching to the end.

The timeline doesn't make sense.

Morse collapses, then the next shot is a 5 second pan across him in a hospital bed in a rather nice hospital room. This isn't being stitched up by DeBryn in the morgue and on your way. This implies some kind of recovery time. This is also backed up by Win in the very next scene saying how she was glad he was back up on his feet and that they were all very worried. There's no real indication of how much time has passed but we're not talking hours, this is days or maybe even weeks after the stabbing.

So why is Morse then explaining to Fred what happened in the pub? How does this make sense? How could Morse spend a not insignificant amount of time recovering and Thursday doesn't visit him. Doesn't talk to him? Doesn't ask what happened? Doesn't even attempt to go after whoever STABBED Morse? "Oh dear, my bagman got stabbed, that's a shame. I'll speak to him at some point about it."

Did Morse lie? Tell a different story and now he's fessing up? Did they know it was Lott but Thursday just didn't know the whole truth? Although Thursday's questions imply that he didn't know about Morse going out there at all.

Honestly, with great regret I have to confess, this whole bit would have worked much better if either a) the pub scene was actually a bedside scene in the hospital or b) The stabbing didn't happen. Lott could have knocked Morse down instead and got a couple of good kicks in and left it at that. No collapse, no weird timeline, the pub conversation happens shortly afterwards.

If I've missed something or someone has a good headcanon to explain this, please let me know!

Im watching a documentary on the Dinaledi Chamber (an archeological site in a very hard to access cavern) and I AM crying about humanity and our homo cousins and how love is not exclusive to humans

But ALSO the main researcher just decided he HAD to see the chamber in person, despite being not optimally fit or sized for it, and you can sort of feel the support caving team is having a Very Stressfull Time Right Now, in a "What Kind of White Nonsense Is This" type of way.

It's funny how clearly uninformed a lot of criticism of Mozilla and its browser Firefox is. Like people say "it's just another corporation, out to make profit, just like Google." And that ordinary users promoting Firefox are just giving them free advertising.

It's in basically any post criticizing Mozilla, including on this site. Like using tumblr search I quickly found a post that was largely positive, but argued that Mozilla operates "under capitalist incentives" And outside tumblr I found a blog post out on the interwebs that criticized Mozilla and outright wondered "I don't know if Mozilla's business model ever made sense, it makes a lot more sense if it's something closer to a nonprofit rather than a commercial entity."

Well, let's research the Mozilla Corporation, see what that business model actually is. Let's begin that research by going to the wikipedia article, and read the two introductory paragraphs. And it turns out that it's "a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation", which is a non-profit.

"The Mozilla Foundation will ultimately control the activities of the Mozilla Corporation and will retain its 100 percent ownership of the new subsidiary. Any profits made by the Mozilla Corporation will be invested back into the Mozilla project. There will be no shareholders, no stock options will be issued and no dividends will be paid. The Mozilla Corporation will not be floating on the stock market and it will be impossible for any company to take over or buy a stake in the subsidiary."

Turns out that it is not just "closer to a non-profit", it is literally a non-profit. Turns out you only needed two paragraphs on wikipedia to learn that, the most basic online research possible, which basically every post I found criticizing Mozilla failed to do.

This is entirely different from any other entity calling itself corporation, which is all about creating profit or money for its shareholders, the "capitalist incentives" spoken about earlier.

If you read further into that article, you will learn that the Mozilla corporation literally only exists separate from the foundation for tax and legal purposes, but it's still a non-profit operation.

This makes it reasonably immune from the enshittification process I've written about before. there is no incentive to fuck over the experience for end users for the sake of shareholder profits, like what tumblr is doing right now.

It means that Firefox is an exemption to the rule that "if something is free, you are the product", because there is no product to produce profits for shareholders, it's a charitable endeavour for a free and open internet, as laid out in the Mozilla manifesto.

This doesn't mean non-profits make corruption impossible, there is plenty of corruption in non-profit foundations. But unlike actual capitalist corporations, it doesn't have the greed and corruption built in. And if you are going to criticize Mozilla and Firefox, which it does sometimes deserve, you should have your basic facts straight before doing so, if you expect me to take you seriously.

... who's scared of becoming a father one day because he has no idea how to do it well

... who catches himself staring at you over and over again as you hold your newest family member close, their little body cradled into yours with so much love that it put a stop to all of his worries

... who's now enamoured not just by you, but by the wonderful home and family that you built together <3
