The principle of pulse DC hot welding machine, the principle of precision pulse heating power supply

Making of My Studio Desk
Well, I’ll start by introducing myself, since this is my first post and all. My name is Sabina Kennedy, and I am an artist living in Phoenix Arizona. I’m currently finishing my BFA in sculpture at Arizona State University and I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up.
I like to make jewelry with non-ferrous metals, like silver, copper, brass. But I also enjoy making a lot of things, like welding steel, and drawing and painting, and embroidery. I’m young as frick though, so I have some time to figure it out. I currently work at a flower shop, Camelback Flowershop to be precise. It’s a really nice place. Ive only been there for about a month, but I like it a lot. I want to one day do the designing of the floral arrangements, but that comes with time.
onto the desk. In my final sculpture class the assignment was to make a tool that would help us with developing our studio. I’m fortunate enough to have a studio space already, that’s frankly a mess, but very cute and full of plants and art supplies. I had a desk that someone made for me a while back, but after moving a couple of times, the legs weren’t firmly attached anymore, and therefore wobbled any time I would sand an object. I decided that it needed a re-vamp
Here it is before I started working on it, all set up at my studio space in the ASU sculpture room. It was a pretty table, nice wood, nice colors, but just not stable, everything was attached using bolts underneath, and nothing was measured consistently.
I took the top off of the legs, because it’s a really thick, sturdy, high quality piece of wood, and the legs went to the scrap bin. The wood on those was also really nice, but I had to suppress my Taurian urge to collect and keep everything and let them go.
I decided to use steel for the base of the table. It’s sturdy, fairly inexpensive, and allowed for the design that I was looking for. I did a lot of planning as to the size of everything and how I wanted the design to be. I chose something fairly simple, offering stability, but not being too bulky. I chose 1″ 16ga square tube for the base and got to work.
I got all of my material pre-cut at the metal supply store. My first step was to measure everything, and drill holes into the appropriate tube. These holes would be how I attach the base to the wooden top at the end of the process.
I chose to MIG weld everything together, because it’s the easiest, and honestly it’s so much fun. After this project I want to weld EVERYTHING. The design is simple, it’s basically a three dimensional rectangle, like the ones that you learn about in geometry class. This rectangle is missing the bottom front line however, to allow for my work chair to easily pass under the desk. After getting everything all welded up, I had to sand the piece, to give it some tooth and clean the grease off.
I then used some Rustoleum spray paint to give this baby the life I was looking for. I had to use plastic and tape to make sure each section wasn’t contaminated by the next. I finished everything with a layer of enamel gloss lacquer, to seal the paint and make sure everything stays on for a long time, also to give everything an overall finish.
I’m obsessed with the colors. They’re very fun and cute and will add some nice color to my studio space. I did a bad job about making a mess on the sculpture dock, but hey, it’s my last semester, I need to leave my mark somewhere right? All while I was working on the base, waiting for the paint to dry and such, I was working on the wooden top.
I took the back pieces off of the big piece of wood, I was really lucky that the person who made me the desk originally just screwed everything together. I then sanded the top to a smooth 220 and made sure everything was nice and clean.

I finished the top with a semi-gloss polyurethane coating. I didn’t really know how it worked at first, so I used an entire can of the stuff before realizing that I had to sand the furs that get stiff on the wood once the first coat goes down. So I got another can, a piece of 220 sand paper and an air hose and brushed off the rough bits. I put two more layers of the poly on the top, just because it was looking so pretty, and now it’s perfect.

I’m really happy with how the poly turned out. it’s looking real clean, and I love the semi-gloss finish. It gives it a nice shine without being too much.
The next step in the process was to put it all together. I pre drilled holes for the hardware I bought before finishing the top, lining everything up with the holes I drilled into the base at the beginning.
Nothing too fancy, just some half inch washers and some bolts with a hexagonal head that I’m sure have a specific name that i’m not sure of. But yeah, after I screwed everything in, this baby was done.
Here’s a picture of the table all put together. It’s still in my studio at school right now, probably coming home within the next month or so.
Back to the gist of the project, It was to create something that would develop our studios. I originally wanted to make a jewelers bench, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a jeweler for the rest of my life. I changed my plan to a simple table with add ons. The next step will be to make an extender that clamps onto the table top and has a bench pin for more comfort when cutting sheets of metal out with my hand saw. I also want to make a little rolling cart that holds my hammers and wire spools. Right now everything Is kind of mish-mashed around and it would be really nice to have everything all organized together.
The next part of the project hasn’t started yet, but once it does I’m sure I’ll do a progress post. I also want to show you guys my desk in my studio, with all of my beautiful plants and natural, Arizona sunlight.
The whole process of making this table was a lot of fun. It definitely makes me think that I will spend my adult life making things for people to use. I love art, I love making art, but really I just love making. I was born to be a maker, but of what, I’m not sure yet.
