Everlasting Serenade
Kim dokja x reader
fluff
kim dokja being your boyfriend..
At the onset of their relationship, Dokja's walls are high and impenetrable, a result of his past trauma. However, as he grows closer to the reader, he gradually learns to let down his guard, allowing them to see the vulnerable parts of himself. Their unwavering support and understanding become catalysts for Dokja's emotional growth, enabling him to become a more open and communicative partner.
Throughout the story, Dokja's commitment to the reader is evident in the sacrifices he makes. He puts their safety and well-being above all else, often taking on burdens and risks to protect them from harm. In the face of danger, Dokja's protective instincts kick in, driving him to devise strategic plans and make difficult decisions to ensure their survival.
As the reader's own role within the story evolves, Dokja embraces their individual growth. He recognizes their strengths and aspirations, providing unwavering support as they navigate their own path. Dokja becomes their confidant, offering guidance and a listening ear during moments of doubt or self-discovery.
Their relationship is not without its challenges. The immense pressure and life-or-death situations they encounter take a toll on both Dokja and the reader. They face moments of doubt, frustration, and even disagreements, but it is through open and honest communication that they navigate these obstacles. They learn to lean on each other, finding solace and strength in their shared connection.
In moments of respite, Dokja and the reader cherish the small joys they can find amidst the chaos. A stolen moment of laughter, a gentle touch, or a heartfelt conversation become precious reminders of the love they share. These quiet interludes provide a reprieve from the hardships they face and reinforce their bond, grounding them in the present moment.
As the story nears its climax, Dokja's growth as a boyfriend becomes palpable. He recognizes that the reader is not just a passive character in his story but a fully realized individual with their own desires and agency. Dokja learns to trust the reader's choices, allowing them to shape their own destiny, even if it means facing uncertainty and danger.
In the end, Dokja's transformation into an exceptional boyfriend is rooted in his unwavering commitment to the reader's happiness and well-being. Together, they weather the storms of the story, emerging stronger and more resilient. Their love becomes a beacon of hope amidst the chaos, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, a genuine and nurturing connection can thrive.

ORV Characters Ranked by Least to Most Likely to Commit White Collar Crime
You guys said you wanted my ORV takes, and I try not to say things unsolicited, so I'll drop the good meta-analysis and literary criticism that I'm known for. For comedy purposes please pretend that ORV is American.
Omniscent Reader's Viewpoint characters broken down by likelihood to commit white collar crime, least to most:
Lee Hyeonseong: he's convinced that he's never committed a crime in his life. Intentionally, of course not. Unintentionally, he takes shopping for groceries extremely seriously, and is sometimes so wrapped up in the fruit inspection experience that he'll leave without paying. Due to his innocent face, bulk, and sheer confidence, he's never caught. In an economically thrifty maneuver, KDJ always sends him on snack runs for parties and texts him math problems while he's there. He insists it's like couponing. It's not couponing.
Jeong Huiwon: similarly, of course she would never choose to commit a crime. Also similarly, when KDJ says, 'Hey, wanna commit a crime?' she always participates. Since the crime is normally targeted at rich people, KDJ can usually morally justify it to her. She calls this harm reduction. It's not harm reduction.
Lee Jihye: would love to commit a crime in theory, almost never in practice. She has an idealized image in her mind of the ideal high school experience and it involves grand theft auto. However, the worst she ever gets is breaking & entering and trespassing, mostly because she didn't stop to wonder if the building was abandoned or not. She can't even shoplift from Claire's.
Shin Yuseung: the kind of kid who sets the dissection frogs in the school laboratory free. Looks up illegal exotic animal trading on the deepweb and sighs in longing. But exotic pet trading isn't very Animal Rights of her, so she just leaks information to the CIA and busts the rings. Lee Gilyeong convinces her to track down shady sellers on Craigslist and bust their kneecaps. Neither of them view this as significantly different from the dissection frog liberation. KDJ gets her a rescued exotic cat for her birthday as a reward.
Lee Gilyeong: self-explanatory.
Han Suyeong: she's been pirating media since she was eleven and has never stopped. World-class expert in pirating everything. She's the unsung hero who rips the CDs and games and puts them online. Runs the pirating websites. Has never paid for a webnovel or manwha or manga in her life. Despite this, she insists that pirating books is immoral and that people should support small authors. The FBI knows she exists and has been trying to catch her for years. She brags about this constantly.
Yoo Sangah: has committed tax fraud before, will commit tax fraud tomorrow, is currently committing tax fraud. Embezzles her company's embezzlement. Insists that she's only committing victimless crimes, mainly because she doesn't view business executives as people. Her ability to evade the IRS is mythological and it's how KDJ got a crush on her.
Yoo Junghyeok: does not understand adult life well enough to knowingly commit any sort of white collar crime. He is this high on the list because he enables and helps KDJ in literally everything he does, especially using his clout as an influencer. This is because KDJ has convinced him that these things aren't crimes, and he doesn't understand adult life well enough to figure it out.
Kim Dokja: has done every white collar crime under the sun. I can't emphasize enough how much crime he does. He's currently blackmailing SYS's college tuition out of a US Senator. HSY makes the shell companies and launders so much money with him. Alternates between running a pyramid scheme and a ponzi scheme depending on the month. Started a cult that one time but we don't like to talk about that. Runs the betting ring for YJH's esports games. Fixes the games. YJH does not know he does this, but KDJ splits the profits and Yoo Mia also needs a college tuition so he decides not to think about it too hard. Big into crypto and runs every crypto scam you can possibly think of, which is normally where the the ponzi schemes come in. Steals YJH's identity often. Somehow everything he does is technically legal. The only crime he does not commit is pirating. Exclusively targets the wealthy and ultra-wealthy and has never stolen money from a poor person. Sugar daddies all of his friends and pays all college tuitions. Anonymously yet obviously sponsors huge amounts of money to YJH's Twitch streams, mostly in apology for the ID theft. Would really rather be living a quiet life in a big house with all of his friends, but that big house ain't gonna pay for itself.

I'm about halfway through Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, and I'm really impressed with how it practically bleeds with themes of storytelling and our relationship with stories as humans. There's the obvious stuff, like how the main character's whole shtick is being a reader with "bookmark" and "fourth wall" abilities, but as of about chapter like 240, I've never stopped tangibly feeling how much ORV seems to want to explore the concept of stories (and not just in the sense of the novel's world where stories are like a kind of power, though that is kind of part of it). I ended up having a lot of roving thoughts, so more under the cut
Specifically what I mean by this is that almost every aspect of the world building and the plot has some kind of commentary on how people relate to stories. The constellations, for example, are very clearly kind of meant to be audience stand ins, especially in the beginning. They're watching the stories of our main characters on stream much the same way that we the readers are watching the story of ORV on our devices in the real world, and oftentimes their reactions to the events mimic our reactions from the outside– they cringe when characters do embarrassing things, they ship characters with chemistry, they hold their breath when things gets tense, and feel genuinely sad and heartbroken when bad things happen to the characters in their show. It's through their financial support that some of these stories can continue to be told, kind of the same way that fans' monetary contributions to artists enables their art to continue being made. Kim Dokja even calls out how the tables have turned early on in the series, that he used to be the one watching them through a screen, and now the situation is totally reversed. The constellations also kind of mimic the negative effect that the audience can have on art– sometimes artists have to bend to the will of their supporters even when it goes against their desired direction for their own art because that's what pulls in the money, and the way that incarnations and dokkaebi have to listen to the will of their sponsors feels like a very on the nose parallel for this. ORV sets up both the constellations and Kim Dokja as content consumers who have a love of stories in common in order to make a statement about how loving stories is universal, while simultaneously laying groundwork to make statements about the line between reader and narrative. Another thing that Kim Dokja has in common with the constellations is that both he and they are increasingly brought to the boundary of the fourth wall as the series progresses. In the same way Kim Dokja starts to realize that he IS part of the story now, and that the people he previously just saw as characters are actually real human beings that he has emotional attachments to, the constellations also start becoming characters who appear in the story and impact it directly, rather than being detached observers. This process of becoming a part of the story after being emotionally invested in it is naturally not something that literally happens to people in real life, but readers wanting to insert themselves into a narrative they love is something very human. I mean, fanfiction is incredibly popular because a lot of us humans can't just leave media that we love alone, we keep thinking about it, we want to expand on it, change it, and sometimes even insert ourselves into it. Historically, myths have had many different versions circulate over time, with some cultures borrowing figures from others and literary giants creating characters of their own (or even versions of themselves *cough Dante cough*) to insert into these legends.
In addition to the very human desire to become a part of the stories we love, ORV also calls out how humans are are kind of enamored with certain themes, and that we show this by having these themes appear in various legends the world over. Realms of death, myths of resurrection, tales of slaying supernatural evils, all of these things are shown to be so universal that constellations sometimes have copyright disputes over them. The fact that the constellations that appear in ORV are so varied is another place where ORV proves to be a love letter to storytelling. The author has such a diverse collection of gods and historical figures that I can't help but see their love for stories as something so strong that it transcended culture and nationality. Furthermore, the fact that constellations obtain their status from how widespread their stories are feeds into the theme of people being stories, which is another interesting angle to look at the relationship between people and stories. ORV has characters literally say "people are stories" out loud, and Han Sooyoung references the philosophy that people only truly die when they've been forgotten, but there isn't a single second where I really stop feeling like this holds true for everyone in the book (and not just because souls being stories and people needing stories to live ends up being part of the worldbuilding). The idea is that our stories give us value, both intrisinsically and extrinsically. ORV represents this literally, as the notoriety of a story actually makes people stronger, and also stories can be used as currency or food to some people. Even on a scale lower than the constellations, the reputations of characters and the rumors of their incredible deeds can increase their value to outsiders, the same way that a person's reputation in the real world can affect their job prospects and social connections (this is a little more obvious and would happen in any story, but I think that the mythologizing of the ORV characters in their own universe is meant to exemplify the effect of a person's stories on their perceived value).
The theme of people being stories also extends to a related but still separate (I think) theme of everyone being the protagonist of their own story. Kim Dokja begins ORV by talking about how much Yoo Sangah feels like a protagonist. She has all the qualities that a main character should have, and Kim Dokja feels like he could never match that, despite the fact that he clearly wants to be a protagonist really badly. He wants to be cool, special, and confident, but it's not until the scenarios start and he starts being able to use skills in a way unique to him that he starts realizing that maybe he can be a protagonist too. And again, this is a theme that ORV just constantly exudes– Kim Dokja often explicitly talks about how everyone is living their own life and being their own person. When he sees Yoo Sangah and Lee Hyunsung for the first time after the intermediate dokkaebi Paul separates them following the golden thrones destruction, he's impressed by their growth while he wasn't looking, and we the audience are reminded that these people learn and progress as the center of their own world. When Kim Dokja is separated from his friends after the Dark Castle arc and hears what they've been up to, he muses about how, even without him, the world continues to turn, scenarios continue to run, and people continue to live. It very much helps that the author of ORV gives every side character a vibrant and memorable personality so that we can better empathize with them as their own people with their own lives, even though they might not get as much screentime. Characters who we do not think to care much about are shown to have significant development while the main character isn't with them. Kim Namwoon matures into a calmer, happier person in the Underworld long after I forgot he existed. Han Myungoh went from bring an insufferable nepotism baby to being a determined and loving father who is willing to be an ally. The author constantly reminds us that Kim Dokja isn't the only one in this world who is a protagonist with a story worth telling, and in a way, it kind of feels like they're also telling the readers that, not only are we the main characters of our lives, but we also can never forget that the people around us are protagonists of their stories as well.
In short, ORV uses just about every character and storyline to convey that humans may love to consume the stories of others, but we can't forget that we're also writing our own stories by living them. Humans are made up of the stories they love, the ones they write themselves, and the ones they put a part of themselves into, and I just get the sense that the author has a lot of feelings about stories and how important they are to us as a species in every sentence they write. I'm definitely curious to see how the story ends because I can't imagine how the author will conclude the series when making a statement about this theme seems so important, but anything that would be a satisfying conclusion to the story would really be counterproductive to making that statement. As a reader, I want a definitive "and they lived happily ever after after solving the story's problems," but since the author actually has Kim Dokja muse on how "he never felt satisfied by 'and they lived happily ever after'," I kind of can't imagine that that's how this series will end? Because it doesn't sound like the author was ever completely satisfied with those endings either. But I also don't think ORV is meant to be a tragedy, so I'm excited to see where things go!

Kim Dokja's [Fourth Wall]
Since my post about the [Fourth Wall] offsetting happiness for Kim Dokja is blowing up, here's a theory I had for the skill.
The [Fourth Wall] is a metaphor for depression.
*SPOILERS BELOW*
It numbs you from everything you experience in reality, be it pleasure or especially your pain. Until you feel nothing at all.
There is a scene where KDJ has a hard time being able to grieve his mother because of the skill, and for anyone who has experienced grief, you may understand that there is a certain numbness that follows that just makes it hard for you to even cry. Like it hasn't hit you yet, but for KDJ it will never hit him, because 'that' is a 'skill' that he doesn't turn off.
This wall supports him in his most self-destructive behaviours more than anything in the worldview does. It will call him an idiot while doing it, but the [Fourth Wall] is ultimately KDJ's biggest enabler in his 'self-sacrificial' bullshit.
Depression closes you off from the world. It is a reaction and a result of the negativity that is experienced mentally. It's a wall to hide behind when the world becomes too much to bear, and that wall stays standing even during the good times because mental health in reality isn't something you can just turn on and off.
The [Fourth Wall] can consume Kim Dokja. We've seen it almost happen.
Kim Dokja's special abilities are literally dissociating and depression lol.
+
In case you didn't run into my previous post, here's Chapter 433:
⸢Kim Dok-Ja watched all these happen with a quiet smile.⸥
[‘The 4th Wall’ is gradually getting thicker.]
⸢As if, he was looking at a spectacle happening in the distance.⸥

Kim Dokja is shown sweating and blushing lightly, looking at Yoo Joonghyuk with sparkly eyes. A cartoony face with big eyes and a blush is drawn above him to emphasize his expression. Behind Kim Dokja is Han Sooyoung, smirking with one hand on his shoulder as she says, "gay gay homosexual gay."

enabler kdj only recognizing yandere yjh's obsession w/ him because he's the mc, but is oblivious to anyone else's affection twrds him
"Dokja-ssi..!" a girl that kdj saved said, halting the ongoing small talk. "I got you a gift for saving me!"
kdj takes it and watches the girl run off. hes sus of the gift and when yjh takes it from him he allows it, confused.
yjh giving kdj the same gift(but changed slightly) later when kdj has forgotten about it, and the girl watches from afar, heartbroken.
the group starts to avoid him after a few "accidents" involving people who try to court kdj, and kdj not noticing bc yjh seems to be hanging around him lately
("why tf is this sunfish bastard here?! he should be at the sub scenario to get that one item..!")
ysy tries to clue kdj in on the weird occurrences but kdj is oblivious/misunderstands it and starts taking her words as a joke
("its weird that all those people just disappeared, yeah? surely thats too many to be a coincidence."
"...ysy they all died in scenarios? what do you mean coincidence?"
"they all were going to ask you out, yknow?"
"dont be silly, who would want to ask me out?")
no one can really say anything to him when yjh takes up so much of his time
still enabler kdj so internally, he is giddy at all the time yjh dedicates to him, ans starts pushing to see the limits. he puts himself in dangerous, self-sacrificing scenarios and watches yjh save him each and every time.
(meanwhile the rest of the team feels useless at being unable to save kdj like yjh can)
yjh feels more and more gratified as kdj starts to rely on him more and more. this comes to a breaking point when kdj is affected by the failure in a scenario (yjh did not attend), causing his skills to be turned down/off.
yjh holes kdj in some abandoned building for the duration of the time, where not even the star stream can see them.
when they return to the company building, no one can even utter a worry for kdj before yjh sweeps him away to another scenario.
anyways this was just a blurt. if anyone does anything w this tag me or something please

Merlin had been having dreams for a while—nightmares that surrounded his unconscious. He knew they were somehow connected to a prophecy he'd found about the Dark Lord and the Chosen One. He'd wanted to join in to help fight in the war, but the Old Religion held him at bay, forcing him to wait. Then, on July 31st, 1980, everything went silent. It took eleven months, but he was finally able to join in.

Of course, the transfer kid gets mentioned because transfers are rare, but the news isn’t that exciting. In fact, according to Laura, no one even seems to know his first name. The only thing anyone has really figured out about him is that he’s American. And that’s not exactly hard because he obviously has an accent.
The only thing Derek really knows is that, despite other reports, he seems quiet enough, prefers to work alone, and has the most amazing shade of amber eyes that Derek has ever seen.
Not that he’s looking. Obviously.

Imagine, then, if a young Japanese wizard by the name of Yuuri Katsuki had transferred to Hogwarts to escape his past, just in time to meet a Russian Quidditch player who would blow open the very doors he was trying so desperately to close.
A story of love, magic, and teenagers trying to find themselves.

Hellooo, I live
ORV brainrot hast set it and so I must make it other ppl’s problem.
So, favorite part/scene/ scenario/section of ORV?
There are many to choose from but I must admit I have a special lil place in my heart for the 46th scenario and the whole Kerfuffle surrounding it.
Dude just walks up after 3 years as a squid, proceeds to get knocked out, drugged and locked up. Breaks out and proceeds to act like nothing happened before having to fight/convince his companion not to enforce a slave contract onto him to stop him from killing himself. Only Kim Dokja
But yea, wbu?
-Enabler Anon
HI SO GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU!!!
Ohhhhh yeah the 46th scenario is a good one, it's so cute, funny, and sad at the same time ;-; which is a pretty good description of ORV overall lol
**SPOILERS BELOW**
Dang my soft spot is definitely early in the plot, Main Scenario #5 Disaster of Floods... the unexpected turn of older Shin Yoosung. I think it was one the main events that really hit readers with the concept of endless regressions and waiting in an abyss for thousands of years because older Shin Yoosung was understandably hellbent on ruining everything. And then when Disconnected Film Theory connected both SYS's memories, I wanted to cry at older SYS feeling what younger SYS felt towards KDJ..
But my ultimate favorite would probably be Epilogue 1: The World of Zero. That realization just smacks your face with the completion of the world's endless plot. Like. The KDJ Company won scenarios, crossed realities, and fought apocalyptic monsters and wars all for KDJ to end up on a train lmfao and it hurts sm. The significance of KDJ’s moniker for the 0th YJH...;-; the beginning of all beginnings... I cri. For me, this is the chapter that people really start understanding the infinity loop behind their universe and it’s wild #sadlyfe

characters ask. im gonna ask about only my favs. wei wuxian / han suyeong / mrs coulter. share ur wisdom with us crossy...
i'll do 1 at a time for asks. nothing interesting to say about wei wuxian and idk who mrs coulter is.han suyeong...i havent read orv in 2 years and never finished the novel full stop but
Favourite thing About Them
She causes soooooo many problems 1863 is like look at the unfathomable extent of problems she causes. I really do like that even though she revels in being problematic and cutthroat she really does care a lot and it frustrates people both on the level that she doesn't spare the feelings of others and also that even though she cares she's still willing to do what she knows needs to be done. it was FASCINATING to see what would have happened had she never had a wide range of pushback from the people she cares about and took the lead in every decision and her technique for flattening the star system. i think she fills out the cast soooo well she is just narrative-wise and character-wise the tritagonist of all time
Least Favourite Thing About Them
nothing. she's perfect. my least favourite thing is she should have had a stronger role through the whole novel instead of it gradually building up to core importance
BrOTP
kim dokja :) and the girls in general. and later in the novel yu junghyeok. her unparalleled skill at bouncing off people she is good in every scenario. another thing i dont like is that she should have bounced off more people. bounce her off yu junghyeok's exwife it'll be funny i promise
OTP
JuHanKim is the name i think? In isolation its like they are just friends. but as a unit they both enable each other and make each other worse. whats not to love.
I'm also a huiwon/suyeong truther i KNOW it would just be replicating the dynamic of dokhyeok literally in-novel they point out the parallels of their dynamic but i dont care <3 its a good dynamic <3
nOTP
The thing about her having a fantastic dynamic with everyone she has a moment with is that no dynamic is that bad and no one ever ships her with someone where the dynamic is bad. so like. HARD LIFE BEING PERFECT I GUESS LOLLL
I do think just pairing her off with either kim dokja or yu junghyeok in isolation undermines what makes them so fascinating??
Random Headcanon
She fucked Kim Dokja's mom.
Unpopular Opinion
dokhyeok being the central focus is early novel dynamic i dont understand people who have FINISHED the novel believing she is just a member of the supporting cast...she literally competes with yu junghyeok as his equal in the journey to the west LARP arc ... MORE focus on their trinity when you write your little yaoi metas.

Due to enablers I have more propaganda since the YJH propaganda led to me spiraling off into how Kim Dokja is an autism king as well speech. As per my YJH propaganda I'm gonna do webtoon friendly first then go into full novel spoilers after a lil break!!
The clearest and most obvious point in this man's character is that his hyperfixation of over a decade on the story Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World (or the Apocalypse depending on what you read), which will be called TWS from here on. He has every bit of this story in his brain (literally) and it's over 3000 chapters long. He read this story constantly, always on his phone reading and rereading what was posted, commenting on each chapter, and soapboxing to try and get someone else to read it. He did the soapboxing so much he would be spotted On Sight by other forum users who dogpiled him due to the fact that the story was, by all rights as understood from outside statements, rather mid. He had so cleanly memorized the story that part of his skill, once the apocalypse started, was that he could just quick draw reference the stats of the people from the story and reread it faster for a refresher
TWS is such a strong hyperfixation that whenever he would visit his mum in prison he would just retell to her the story as he was reading it along with his thoughts, feelings, and opinions on the plot and characters. He is regularly described as actually lighting up when talking about the story at all! He discusses TWS so thoroughly that when the apocalypse started his mum was able to navigate the scenarios and other changes cleanly and even plan around ways that would augment the plans she figured her own son and the protagonist of the story (YJH) would conduct to let them do their thing!!
This fixation is also something that absolutely doubles as a coping mechanism (escapism) AND his avoidance of losing things. He already was a reader from a very young age and, when he got upset over a story ending as a kid, his mum taught him "read it again" because it would be different every time. Your understanding would be better, you will notice foreshadowing you missed, you will understand motivations of side characters more, your life scenario will be different and you might view it differently just because YOU have changed. This was something KDJ absolutely took to heart. Afterall, if you just keep rereading and exploring the book's world more and more it's not really ending, you don't have to let it go until you're ready to read soemthing else and put the book down
He also used this reading as a way to figure out how to interact with people (even if he was bad at it) because in real life he was Not Good at talking or socializing. This wasn't Entirely his fault (his mum printing a book from prison about murdering her husband included Dokja so that was a social murder for the young teen) but he also just was generally poor at orienting himself both socially and in the literal directional sense. Its easier to pick apart motivations when you read a wide range of medias and dive into characters to have as a base to pull from
Masking? Oh, social masking? You mean how every time he's in an uncomfy situation he mumbles to himself "I am Yoo Joonghyuk" because thats his comfort character? And his idol in a way even though he loves and hates so much about him? Or do you mean that his biggest and strongest skill post apocalypse is called 4th Wall and is just Masking: The Skill. 4th wall REGULARLY absorbs emotional, mental, and physical shock to keep KDJ stable and functioning in his day to day life post apocalypse!
Does this man preplan everything? Oh yeah, absolutely. He is spending every waking moment planning for scenarios far into the future, reading and checking his details against TWS and sharing this information with others as needed to keep them successful and, most importantly, alive! He loves these characters come to literal life so much that he dies repeatedly for them to survive because he cannot handle the idea of not getting to the end of the story with all of them alive. He literally corrected his plans so that, when interference did kill one of the characters, he just went to the underworld and brought their soul back so that they could still be alive (in a way that would also work to keep him with the upperhand in the future). Even still, his adaptability is not that great and he does have a few emotional meltdowns in the future over changes that mess up his plans, he's just better at it than YJH
Okay now is me not being able to avoid spoilers so if you havent read the novel to completion go ahead and skip!!!
Homie talks but my boy Kim Dokja is NOT good at communicating, more just trying to talk so that he can wiggle out of conversation and get back to whatever he wants to pick at in his mind or do on his own. He's so bad in fact that when given a literal scenario that is just "talk to your friends" he panics because he doesn't think he will succeed (nor do they expect him to) because he just is bad at communication
Oh and TWS is such a huge part of his life that Sookyung (his mum) hates YJH for essentially taking her son away from her, in her eyes, and when later on the Olympus read fate is read to be that KDJ would be "killed by the one he loves the most" she KNOWS that the one to do it will be YJH once she sees him (although she has killed KDJ herself at this point in a hope that it's her, this family is sooo normal)
Truly is there anything more pure than whole hearted loving without wanting in return? The love a reader has for their precious comfort character? Not expecting anything in return but to have that character happy with love and comfort in their life? Is he projecting with his lack of self worth and investing and living vicariously? Absolutely, but that's also the mental illness (this man is so depressed and anxious and self harm driven)
Speaking of self harm and not being able to handle losing things he cares about! KDJ actively sets up plans and reacts in ways that gets him fr actually killed over and over and over. From the start of the King's Path to The Strongest Sacrifice to, everyone's favorite, The 73rd Demon King, and beyond, this man WILL kill himself instead of letting someone die and he also WILL have a meltdown if he thinks someone has actually died and do everything he can to fix it back because he cannot let go of someone or something he feels he needs as a crutch to keep himself up
I think it says a LOT that 4th wall is literally the embodiment of TWS. It's how he kept himself safe(ish) and living before the apocalypse and, once it started, it became more solid and real. I feel a lot of folks who masked for most of their life know the struggle of "I don't know who I am without this mask and it scares me" as they get to the point of recognizing that they have to look underneath. A dokkaebi, the beings that start the apocalypse in the story, the beings that KDJ manipulates to his needs, being the very thing he needs to get past to see himself means a lot to me. When it talks to him and he threatens to break it because he wants to see his own abilities without it filtering him (cries) it tells him, essentially, "Im keeping you safe you can't look too long it will hurt you"
The 4th wall, being the thing keeping his mind safe, is shown to devour characters from the book (and some people but they come back its fine) and uses them as curators to organize KDJ's thoughts and all the information about his life and TWS in his mind, which is a massive library that is sorted into sections for access as needed. Reading is so core to his being that his mind is a library (also the play on spelling in his name but thats like page one of the book we don't need to cover that)
So not only does TWS take up an incredibly massive part of his mind, since he has been creating charts and statistic references on skills and weaknesses and scenarios since he first found the story after his suicide attempt, but it also is something that he can't ever even let go of, even if it would've helped him fool the people he loves so much into thinking he was still there. At the 51/49 split, the thing that tips everyone off that KDJ isn't actually all there is he literally took his hyperfixating with him into the train. He made an avatar of himself that wasn't autistic and hyperfixated on reading (and on TWS specifically), less neurodivergent, less fiddling with stuff to stim, and everyone picked up that this wasn't their man in the room with them
I would go on but I told myself I would keep this under 2k like last time and honestly so much of him is tied in with YJH that its hard to make it about Just Him
Anyways vote Kim Dokja, I'm begging
