Cassius’s hat is battery-powered. a spell is sewn into the inner lining and keeps it floating a set distance above the circlet. it can take some gentle bumping and shaking and settle back into position, but if you yank hard enough it’ll come right off.

Meleo studies monster seeds - wiggly, animal-like mana aggregates that form on dungeon walls. They grow as they feed on the dungeon’s mana, eventually becoming full-fledged monsters. She hopes that, by studying them in a controlled environment, she can find the factors that determine a monster’s final appearance.

Cassius may be slightly misrepresenting the source of the research he’s submitting to the academy.
