I think that Dean and Cas' story is truly a love story. From beginning to end, we see endless little storylines and director choices and writing choices and actor choices, we see their bond builds and builds and breaks and builds again and they ultimately have some of the most epic quotes spoken to them or by them, their story to it's core is a story about love, and how It can change even the most heartless of beings. It is also a story of so many beautiful mergings, between heaven and earth, angel and human, we see two supposed opposite beings literally fall in love infinite times over while trying to save each other again and again, and in so many ways, not always good ways, but all in good intention.

An angel of the lord saves the righteous man from hell. This is where they start. And then he continues trying to explain to him why he deserves to be saved. Why he will do it time and time again. And so he does.

They go to purgatory together, and the whole time they are there their whole mission is trying to save one another, even if it meant sacrificing oneself, because the other one is too important for them to lose, to imagine a life without, to deprive them of continuing to live like they deserve.

They always tried to keep the other one safe and close, without knowing truly why that is what they wanted.

The angel rebelled for the human. He kept doing everything for him, and the human did everything for the angel, trusted him, made him his family, and taught him what family truly meant.

They were each other soulmates, which was confusing and took some time for the angel to comprehend since he never had a soul to begin with. Maybe the human made him grow a soul, even if only figuratively, but either way, he couldn't deny the truth once it set in; it was the love he had for this human that changed him, changed everything, the entire course of the universe.

So yeah, Castiel, Angel of the Lord, Celestial being of Heaven and the Divine, let his love change him. And he became other things, like Cas and Huggy Bear and Sunshine. He let the heaven in him fall in love with the earth and never came back to the heartless soulless being he once was. He loved now and was in love, and it was so much it was enough to make him happy.

And Dean loved Cas. He loved him a lot. He saw praying as begging but only prayed to Cas. Only begged Cas to see him and understand he needs him, because love is too big a word, or too small, or too hard to let out of his throat. He let himself be hurt by Cas both physically and emotionally because as much as Cas cared for him, there were times he did not know the best ways to show it. He trusted him time and time again and gave him the benefit of the doubt until he couldn't find it in him anymore to hold against his own anger and lost it. Lost his angel to his anger while he froze in place. But he woke up in time, and prayed again to his angel to come to him, to save himself, because he loved him, he loved him so much that he let his anger die and let himself cry for his love. And Cas came to him and heard his prayer, but not the love that was too scared to be set free.

And then it was time. It was time for Cas to save Dean one last time, and the only way he could do that was by confessing his love and being happy and then abruptly being taken away forever. And he shared it all, everything they never talked about so openly before but always fucking felt and knew was there. Because not only he always loved Dean, he always really saw him, saw it all, and knew it all, but understood better than anyone that this Righteous Man did everything for love and out of love. Cas not only fell in love with the earth or with a human but with the most human aspect of this world, which was love. Dean was love incarnate, and Cas was always in Awe of him

So they loved and loved and lost each other, and it hurt like hell to think they would never have their happy ending.

But Dean and Cas had a fan base. A full on Fandom of people who loved them truly and wanted them to have a happy ending. And the writers aren't the only ones who matter in this story. We changed them too.

In my eyes, and I'm sure that in many of yours as well, Dean and Cas are happy and alive. They are together and in love, like they have always wanted to be, like they deserved to be. And it is good, and sweet, and safe, and sound.

Are there any fanon misconceptions that you hate with a burning passion?

I recently saw someone say that Sam was the emotionally intelligent one + Dean was the most repressed man on the planet and it made my blood boil.

The idea that Sam is "the emotionally intelligent one" makes me chuckle. Watching him interact with 90% of people while paying even slight attention and then reading people perpetually say that makes me go:

There are a lot of fandom things that make me laugh because I think they're just that ridiculous, there are things that slightly irritate me, and there are things that full on annoy me. Examples:

Dean is ruining everyone else's life in the group and all the bad stuff that happens to everybody is his fault. He is forcing everyone around him to stay with him (????????) and is trying to control all of their lives by *looks at notes*. Damn. Sorry. I'm not fluent enough in bullshit to read this. :/

Sam and Dean don't care about anyone except each other.

Every bad feeling Cas has ever felt is Dean's fault.

Every bad feeling Sam has ever felt is Dean's fault.

Jack should be treated like a regular human three year old. He is fully entitled to kill people when he is upset and must be instantly forgiven because he can't help himself. Doing anything to stop him from hurting others might hurt his feefees and is therefore abuse and is worse than murder will ever be.

Dean has trust issues. What? Noooo hahah this definitely isn't Sam's grossly manipulative propaganda. 😒

Sam has no agency.

Sam consistently hates John and never wants to be a hunter at any point ever. He always wanted a normal life. (see: #sam the hunter and #we probably have a lot more in common than just about anyone)

Sam is well-adjusted.

#Sam Knows. No he doesn't.

Castiel is making it perpetually clear to Dean at all times that he is totally sickeningly in love with him and Dean is just stupid and oblivious.

Dean just wanted Cas to be useful.

Summary:

So what if Dean Winchester is a male Omega? He’s as big as most Alphas, as fast as most Alphas, and he’s a seasoned fighter. He can take his Alpha friend Benny in four out of five practice matches. But the stupid UWFC (Ultimate Were Fighting Championship) rules state that fighters have to compete not only in their weight class, but also within their primary and subgender.

That’s just genderist, Dean says to anyone who will listen, and Benny mostly agrees.

And Dean works hard Monday through Friday as a teacher at a progressive Charter School, the Zevon Academy, helping young weres of all designations to understand not only English and Literature, but also were biology and Healthy Were Sexuality.

He’s got a great life. He’s got friends. He’s got the occasional Omega or Beta hook-up or heck, even the occasional Alpha female. Dean doesn’t date Alpha males. But life is good, right?

Why can’t an Alpha male be a ballet dancer and a musician? Yes, Cas is not as big or tall as a lot of Alphas, and he’s certainly not aggressive. He had enough of that growing up, thank you, and decided he’s above that.

It’s just a terrible shame that a freak accident and questionable medical treatment ended his career, and then accusations of sexual harassment of an Omega male ended his second career.

But thanks to Gabe, he has a brand new job as a teacher in the Performing Arts track at a school called the Zevon Academy, teaching dance. There are sure to be some Beta males at the school that he can befriend, or date. After all, Omegas are out of the question. But his life is good, right?

That leaves Dean and Milton. Dean holds out his hand because he’s trying to be a Team player, he really is. Milton looks at it as though he’s never seen a hand before, but takes it in a brief, warm clasp that shoots an electric spark up Dean’s arm. Also, damn. Dean can’t smell any pheromones coming from the other man, so he can’t tell the dude’s secondary gender. He doesn’t know if Milton is using blockers, but it doesn’t matter. His posture is suddenly rigid with tension. Did he have the same electric zap?

Then the guy opens his mouth, and the moment dissolves. “Did the principal say Dr. Winchester?” Milton tilts his head to the side like a confused bird.

“Yeah, Dr. Winchester. Why?”

Milton turns his cobalt blue eyes on Dean. He scans them over Dean’s heavily-muscled shoulders and arms that are covered in a worn band t-shirt, his trim hips and bowed legs wrapped in faded blue jeans, and nods. “Physical Education.”

Dean blinks. “What? What part of the phrase Liberal Arts Team Lead makes you think Physical Education?” Electricity be damned, this guy’s just weird.

Milton’s eyes widen. “Oh, uhm, well, it’s not an uncommon degree for an Alpha, after all. I’m not sure why you’re so–”

Dean holds up a hand. “One, that’s an incredibly intrusive, genderist assumption. And B, Liberal Arts, buddy. Now, if you’re done making assumptions, follow me. I need to get my ID badge and lock my classroom.”

Milton just stares, and says nothing. Dean turns, and walks down the long hall from the conference room to his wing of the school, and hears steady footfalls behind him.

As someone who has just (as in literally like five minutes ago) finished the entirety of Supernatural for the first time ever and is currently completely emotionally wrecked and ruined-

I need to talk about The Love Confession in episode 18.

Because holy shit.

I mean holy shit.

You see the Destiel meme trending on Tumblr you think haha I can't wait to see this scene and cry over losing him and be upset over him saying his infamous 'I love you.'

But no.

No one readies you for the fact that if you DIDN'T watch the show as a Destiel fan.. you could not POSSIBLY escape this love confession scene either.

That shit swallows you whole like the Empty swallows Cas.

(FROM THE TRANSCRIPT, AND I QUOTE)

CASTIEL I know. I know how you see yourself, Dean. You see yourself the same way our enemies see you. You're destructive, and you're angry, and you're broken. You're "daddy's blunt instrument." And you think that hate and anger, that's... That's what drives you, that's who you are. It's not. And everyone who knows you see it. Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love. You raised your little brother for love. You fought for this whole world for love. That is who you are. You're the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. (he smiles, crying now) You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell... Dean inhales, ready to argue, but Castiel confesses before he can.

CASTIEL I love you. (he smiles)

DEAN Don't do this, Cas.

"I know."

He knows Dean better than anyone else in the world. Sam knows his brother, but he can't see him the same way Cas can. He can't bring himself to.

Dean wants that agony. Needs anyone who loves him to see all of his fucked up, rotten self.

Castiel has seen his soul. Castiel saw him dark and bloodied in Hell and still, he raised him and marked his muddied soul with his pure touch.

"You're destructive, and you're angry, and you're broken."

He admits Dean's faults to him.

I see you for all of your darkness and I love you despite.

"And you think that hate and anger, that's... That's what drives you, that's who you are. It's not."

Dean's prayer to Cas in Purgatory.

Dean's greatest source of pain, the reason he hates himself so much.

'Daddy's blunt little instrument.' It's his father's anger. The anger that was taken out on children. On him and his little brother. The anger that he fought to protect his brother from all those years as they grew up.

"And everyone who knows you see it. Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love. You raised your little brother for love. You fought for this whole world for love."

Cas sees him.

Cas knows him.

Cas understands him.

Every time Dean defended Sam against Heaven, Hell, Lucifer and God and Death and every other being that wanted to hurt his little brother.

Every time he'd tell them 'No. That is not the boy I raised. I raised my little brother to help people. To love people. Not to destroy them. Never to destroy them.'

And every time Sam looked him in the eyes and proved him right, time and time again.

Fuck God, fuck Death- if they want his little brother? If they want the world he's lived to help? They'll have to go through him.

"That is who you are. You're the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know."

Cas looks at Dean and he sees the most caring man on Earth.

He sees all that sadness and all that fury, and all that grief and all that heartbreak- because Dean never stops caring. Not once. For every single person on Earth. In Heaven. In Hell. In Purgatory. Deserving or not, Dean will not stand by and feel nothing.

And Cas loves him for it.

Cas will die a happy man, just knowing he was loved by Dean Winchester.

Cas will die happy just knowing that he made Dean feel something, and that he has saved him. That he has changed him. He dies happy only after he makes Dean hear that he is loved. That all of it, everything he has ever done, has meant something to someone. To Cas.

And then...

"Why does this sound like a goodbye?"

Don't let this be a goodbye.

Why are you letting me go like this?

Why are you letting go?

If you feel all of that, why are you still leaving?

And finally;

"I love you."

I absolutely *love* the parallels between Dean and Cas' "I need you" and Sam and Gabriel's "I need you."

Dean and Castiel's:

Cas is being controlled by Heaven, well Naomi, and he's physically hurting Dean to get the angel tablet. At this point Dean's on his knees and begging Cas, trying to reason with him.

"Cas. Cas. I know you're in there. I know you can hear me. Cas...It's me. We're family. We need you. I need you."

The simple "I need you" is what pulled Cas out and allowed him to regain control.

The simple "I need you" that was originally scripted as "I love you."

Like, even though the words changed, we can still see it and feel it. Subtle subtext or not. Nothing's subtle about supernatural. They knew what they were doing even when they claim that they didn't.

Sam and Gabriel's:

After Ketch brings Gabriel out of Asmodesus' hands and back into the Winchester's, Gabriel doesn't talk, move, do pretty much anything. He's just kinda stuck in his own head. And you know Sam has to go and give Gabriel one of his famous little pep talks to try and get him back.

"Gabriel, you have to dig yourself out of this hole. Look, I know you think it's safer inside....And this is my life. No matter how many times I tried to fight it, this is what I was put here to do. This is where I make the world a better place. And sure, yeah, hookers in Monte Carlo sounds great, but your family needs you. Jack, your nephew, needs you. The world needs you. We need you. Gabriel, I need you."

The same "I need you" doing the same exact job here. Except for the fact that instead of Gabriel pulling a Cas, he just corrects Sam's words from hookers to porn stars. In my opinion, that's Gabriel's way of trying to hide the fact that he cares just as much as Sam does. Behind the comedy and the jokes he uses as defense mechanisms.

I know just reading words doesn't do any justice, but if you've seen the episode you know what I'm talking about when I say that Sam said it with feelings. And more than just sympathy and 'we need him to help stop Michael' feelings. Ever since Tall Tales, Sam has had *something* for this archangel. It's a shame that the writers never really explored that plot much.

It's-the parallels between the two "I need you"'s is what gets me. Like, they could've just left it with Sam and Gabriel. They could've just left it at "we need you" and everything would've been fine. No need for the "I need you." But no. Because they added it, they made Sam personally care. They made it just as emotionally charged as Dean and Cas' scene. They didn't have to do that. The only explanation I have is the writers knew what the hell they were doing. Once again, nothing is as subtle as you think on this show.

Ao3 ship dynamics that I've learnt over half a year of reading fics for the first time

Drarry (harry potter):

Draco and Harry are both successful, but both of them are like going through it emotionally. Harry is a golden retriever and Draco is a cat in terms of vibes. Draco is obsessed with redeeming himself and Harry is suspicious, at first. Both are possessive.

Harry is successful but emotionally unavailable, he might be slutting it up or is just realising he's queer. Draco is having an awful time (emotionally or financially) but he has a great sense of fashion (leather, lace and billowy shirts). Draco redemption, Harry is wise and empathetic, but possessive. Very smutty.

Both Harry and Draco are having an awful time and find solace in each other. Lots of hurt/comfort.

Steddie (stranger things):

Eddie Munson is Rocky Horror Picture Show levels of queer and Steve finds that extremely hot. Eddie can be a successful musician or just sort of happy in general. Generally smutty, some hurt/comfort.

Steve is having an extremely bad time with his parents, Eddie is one of the few people who understand. Lots of hurt/comfort, drug use or smut.

Steve and Eddie deal with Upside Down trauma or shenanigans, but also being queer in the 80's. Hurt/Comfort all the way down.

Destial (supernatural):

Dean and Castiel deal with their trauma in a 'healthy' way by boning each other and never talking about their feelings. In AU fics, Castiel is generally a lawyer, the son of a priest, a doctor/student or a soldier (higher up the chain than Dean, at least). So much hurt/comfort in these fics. Also smut.

Dean is dealing with trauma about John being a bad parent and looking after Sam. He is also having a hard time acknowledging/reconciling that he is queer. Castiel comes into his life and Dean is feeling some type of way about it. Eventual found family. Hurt/Comfort, very sweet.

Castiel is dealing with being in love with Dean. Forbidden love. Sometimes Dean is a demon or a drunk.

a TFP X Angel! Reader please ~

Like Castiel for the "Supernatural" series. like she's a powerful angel of the Lord and the Heaven and she's been sent to Earth to watch out over the kids of Team Prime and the team NEVER knew about it while the angel reader was dealing with inside threats on her own (like demons, monsters, threats worse than the Decepticons...) without Team Prime knowing, and being the most reserved "human" but fully wisdom they know, and it all revealed when the kids are NOT the kids, but actual demons in disguises who want to attacked the reader and Team Prime witnessed it all, and she beginning to explained what she is after defeating them. i pick Optimus, Ratchet, Arcee and Ultra Magnus. I bet she'll use the quote "Read the bible, Angels are warriors of God, I'm a soldier."

(I have no idea what "Supernatural" is or who Castiel is, but I tried my best with what you've told me.)

The entire team has so many questions... 1. What happened to the kids? Where are they? 2. Angels exist? 3. You're an angel?

Optimus was quick to react when the kids were revealed to be demons and had helped you fight them before practically interrogating you. However during the fight it hurt him to do this—not only physically speaking, but emotionally speaking, because part of him thinks that those were still the kids. After learning of angels and the existence of demons, it's honestly all very mind-boggling to him. Depending on what exactly demons strive to do, he may or may not predict there might be a possible alliance between demons and decepticons.

Ratchet was left baffled, and was flipping horrified that the kids suddenly morphed into monsters before you came in and killed them. Like the rest of the team, he's burning with questions, but he doesn't bombard you. When he gets the chance to, he asks you any questions he had that went unanswered.

Arcee nearly suffered a spark-attack when she witnessed the kids morph into hideous demons. She was left near speechless after you killed them, and she was torn between asking whether you were alright, what happened to the kids, or why you killed them, but she luckily recovered enough to ask you all 3 things, expecting an answer right there and then. When you explain what happened to the kids, she's relieved only for a second before the idea that the kids were kidnapped pops into her mind. If they weren't, she'll be relieved, but if they were, she'll be sent into a panic.

Since Ultra Magnus isn't as attached to the kids as everyone else is, he isn't too shaken as he watches you kill the demons, but he was definitely concerned about where those demons came from. He's certainly perplexed by the fact you're an angel at first, but he quickly accepts this as it is, despite still thinking that it's strange.

Morning's Echo ★ BuckMaddie ★ 3K ★ ➢ this is an incest fic. they're only two years apart in age in this one. I think the dynamic was very interesting, and i defo wish this had been longer, let me know more about their past and how they became entangled like this.

The Long Way Home ★ Buck-centric ★ 100K ★ sequel here ★ ➢ during the tsunami, Buck is kidnapped by a sexual trafficking ring and forced into sex work. this is basically his journey from when he's kidnapped to when he's rescued, with some glimpses of how the 118 handles it all, multiple pov's. there's things I love about this fic and things I don't, but ultimately, I would consider it a fave because I really couldn't put it down. I think I read all of it in like... a day or two.

The Way You Did (Once Upon a Dream) ★ Buddie ★ 2K ★ ➢ Sleeping Beauty curse. Buck is in a coma, or in a deep sleep, or however it worked in sleeping beauty, and Eddie has to take it too far to wake him up. the writing is really good, and i am still awaiting a sequel so we can see the aftermath. (rape/noncon)

hurt locker ★ Buddie ★ 77K ★ ➢ I personally don't really consider this a dark!fic per se, but I still think it's emotionally heavy and packs a punch at times. Buck and Eddie are childhood friends, and when Shannon gets pregnant, Buck enlists along with Eddie.

Broken Like Me ★ BuckBobby ★ 15K ★ ➢ Buck and Bobby meet a year before Buck is assigned to the 118, and neither of them have good coping mechanisms. I genuinely really enjoyed this fic, and how it explored their dynamic had they met before Bobby was Buck's boss, and it's take on Buck's 1.0 days.

Eight Drinks a-Roofied ★ Buck-Centric ★ 21K ★ ➢ shows how Buck's gotten roofied eight times. what can I say, it was a fun read for me.

Dean's told that Castiel Novak is his soulmate by Anna (the angel that rescued him from hell in this universe) and he decides to kidnap Castiel so they can meet and thus know they will share a heaven. this is genuienly my favorite dark fic. hands down one of the best i've ever read.

They Think I'm Possessed ★ JohnDean, Wincest ★ 27K ★ ➢ John decides to make Dean a replacement for Mary. Dean becomes Sam's mommy, and John's partner. He's essentially John's housewife and Sam's mother. I don't wanna give anything away but this was literally so well written and I read it all in one sitting, I could not put it down, it was so disturbing and depraved and I loved every second of it.

Ninety One Whiskey ★ Destiel ★ 401K ★ ➢ Castiel and Dean are both soldiers in WW2 in the same infantry. Dean is a medic, and if i remember correctly, Castiel is a sergeant. very well written, very slow burn, very good. haven't read it in years though, i just remember it really being good.

Fever Where You Run To ★ JohnDean ★ 3,9K ★ ➢ John gets hit with a lust spell / sex pollen. He either has to fuck it out or die. Dean offers himself up. (John has been having inappropriate thoughts about dean for years at this point, though)

A Tear in the Sky ★ OT4 ★ 27K ★ ➢ Niall Horan is a consultant on cases that need a personal touch, someone to get close to prey and predators alike to discover the truth, and he's eager for the chance to work with old acquaintance Zayn Malik at Station Twelve. His attitude shifts when he discovers what waits for him is more than just three boys caught in the midst of a cult. A tight deadline presses on him to complete his report, yet the more he learns about the unique dynamic between these three, the more he starts to question his own sanity. Professionalism is hard to hold onto as the case and Niall's mind begin to unravel.

Hard to explain this one but it did have a chokehold on me when I first read it as a wee teenager first discovering fanfiction. 10/10!

Dead in Ohio ★ Puckurt ★ 93K ★ ➢ zombie apocalypse. Kurt and Puck are stuck with each other and they fall in love. kinda enemies to lovers but also kinda not. this is a fic that I have not reread in years due to the actor who plays puck. but it's still a good fic and I wanted to include it for that reason.

Here are a couple of some amazing Destiel fics that I've read fairly recently, plus one wip...but it's so worth it!: Fic descriptions from AO3: Parachutes by @chaoticdean 81.6k / Explicit After 15 years, a wedding in Vegas 12 years ago, and half a dozen impulsive decisions (including a matching tattoo they still see daily), Dean and Castiel are getting a divorce.

It's been six months since they've separated, and Dean is still in denial, back in his childhood bedroom at Bobby and Ellen's. On the other side of town, Cas is playing the dangerous games of how-many-shifts-in-the-ED-can-I-pick-up-before-collapsing and will-my-liver-survive-to-see-another-day.

Then Dean gets called in the middle of the night by Sioux Falls General Hospital, telling him his husband’s life is hanging by a thread after getting hit by a car on his way back home.

A coma, serious injuries and several surgeries later, Cas is back home with mandatory presence required to help him with reeducation and monitoring his progress. And against all odds, Dean is the one staying around to help.

The entity of the Empty has managed to hide Cas from Jack, and all he can do, is wait for the entity of the Empty to make a mistake and release its grip on Castiel, which might take at least a century.

Dean, shattered by the fact that he is going to have to live his life without Cas, mourning him for the rest of his days, drowns himself into the unforgiving and painful sea of grief. And as much as he wants to give up on life, he forces to keep going, because he doesn’t want Cas’ sacrifice to be for nothing, even if the simple act of breathing hurts.

Unable to stay in the bunker anymore, haunted by the many memories he shared with Cas, Dean leaves the bunker and ends up buying a house near a lake. The house needs a lot of restoration, but Dean decides to work on it, hoping that if Cas is ever brought back from the Empty, he will have a nice home to come back to, even if Dean is no longer alive.

Lucifer + war

I know that no one wants Lucifer takes, but...

I keep thinking about that funky, exhilarated smile Lucifer dons when Amara attacks Heaven.

For this brief time in season 11, Lucifer feels like Lucifer again.

He has a purpose. He's the impossible hope against The Great Evil, gearing up for the prize fight. He's not even alone. He's with a brother who gray-rock-tolerates him as comrade instead of actively trying to kill him.

For a second, he even starts becoming so used to being part of a team that he forgets who he is. But he's Lucifer, and that means he doesn't have to spare Sam. Hell, why should he want to? He ain't got no feelings! So, he keeps living up to the idea of Lucifer. He's evil, he's cunning, he's strong, he's a warrior...

He even gets to go back to Heaven, where they uneasily accept him as he tries to ape the charisma expected of God's finest. But he learns he's not so good at that part. So, he calls on his brother, Castiel (the more natural leader), to do the soldiering part. (From SPN 11x22 -> LUCIFER: And here I thought I had made real inroads with you guys. Welp, I came here to ask a good-faith favor of you folks, but as you are clearly less than kindly disposed, perhaps you'll, uh, lend an ear to my very own Jiminy Cricket. Hmm? CASTIEL: Hello, brothers. Sisters.)

And then, on the eve of battle, after doing everything they asked of him, Amara rips him away from his brother and his father, and he's brutally untethered after his first bout of security for eons. (Say what you will, I still stand by that Lucifer begrudgingly likes as much as he resents Cas and the security/safety he provides for his loved ones. He likes Gabriel, too.)

And he despairs.

In season 12, he seems to have been waiting for Castiel specifically:

Vince Vincente: Castiel. Took you long enough. Did you bring the rest of the Little Rascals?

Lucifer doesn't even wanna be Lucifer anymore. Playing him last season sucked. He went to war, was hated for it, and then he got horrifically tortured by Amara, and nobody cared.

Lucifer (Vince Vincente): Because it's fun. Because I can. And because being Lucifer? So much Judeo-Christian baggage. But Vince? He's famous. Everybody loves him. And I need love. I had a really jacked childhood.

And Lucifer is frustrated with Cas. As he fights him, his voice is unusually heavy with emotion:

Castiel: You think this is fun? Lucifer (Vince Vincente): Oh, I wouldn't expect you to understand. I was inside you. I know what a weak, duty-bound… Castiel attempts to attack again but he is swiftly knocked aside by Lucifer Lucifer (Vince Vincente): ...pleasureless dullard you are.

This whole scene, Lucifer is appealing to (and usually speaking directly to) Castiel, doing things to try and get a rise out of him and get his attention (killing innocents, beating up Crowley). Like many of the emotionally unhinged characters (Rowena, Crowley, pretty much all the demons), Lucifer is frustrated by Castiel's coping strategy, which is to withdraw and gray-rock him (i.e. "become as uninteresting and unengaged as possible so that the other person loses interest"). Getting a rise out of Cas is its own kind of Holy Grail.

But just like when they were roomies, Castiel won't grace Lucifer with a reaction, which triggers him pretty hard. This scene reads as incredibly emotionally charged, especially for Lucifer. That's because Lucifer wants Castiel to react...just like he wants Chuck to react.

(Everybody loves Cas, and he won't even bask in it. No one loves Lucifer.)

Lucifer doesn't even kill him. His last hit tosses Cas onto a couch, for Christ's sake. Lucifer chooses to take the majority of his violence out on the human and the demon. He says to Cas: "Stick around for the afterparty." He wants to see him hurt post-Sam and Dean deaths, most likely. (That'll surely get a reaction.)

Sam: You and God made up. You forgave him. What would he think? Lucifer (Vince Vincente): I'm not especially interested in his opinion. Dear old dad, he finally apologized for abandoning me. And what's the very next thing he does? [Voice breaks] He ditches me. [Laughs, openly crying] And you, too, by the way. His words, your words, they mean nothing. Don't you get it? This is all meaningless. Heaven, Hell, this world. If it ever meant anything, that moment is past. Nothing down here but a bunch of hopeless distraction addicts, so filled with emptiness, so desperate to fill up the void… they don't mind being served another stale rerun of a rerun of a rerun. You know what my plan is? I don't have one. 

For a half-second, he loved them and wanted their love, too. He had war companions in Sam and Dean. He had a brother in Cas. But Lucifer has gone from being too faithful in The Cause to having no plan at all. And with that, he, too, has fallen to the ultimate SPN bad guy: NIHILISM.

Thus, Jack.

He doesn't go to kill Cas until after Jack is secured. It's as he tells Sam, "I don't need you anymore!" (Because now he has Jack. The thing that will make his life "meaningful.")
