EFT, The Healing Codes and Mindfulness
On Wednesday I popped along to a locally organised group to hear talks on EFT (the emotional freedom technique) from a local practitioner and mindfulness meditation from a senior lecturer at a nearby university.
The emotional freedom technique is a therapeutic approach that has been gathering international recognition over the past few years. It was accepted as an effective therapy by the American Psychological Association this year after numerous scientific research paper demonstrated its effectiveness for a range of issues such as anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress disorder.
It all started when a clinical psychologist called Roger Callahan began learning about acupuncture and traditional Eastern approaches in his quest to provide relief for his patients. The story goes that he had a client Mary who had a water phobia and said thinking about water made her feel sick to her stomach. So he tried tapping on the meridian point under her eye that relates to the stomach and she exclaimed that she had no fear. Callahan went on to diligently identify tapping sequences for many issues to create Thought Field Therapy, but his training supposedly cost £100k to learn which limited his work to the very few. As far as I understand it, a chap called Gary Craig attended and believed it was something everyone should know. He generalised the approach into one tapping sequence and ‘gave’ it to the world free via the web in Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). I first learnt it in 2007, following up with further training last year and this, so I was keen to hear from another practitioner.
The speaker J started with a brief description of how EFT may work in relation to stress. But he was keen to share a new approach he had recently started using with clients called The Healing Codes. I'd never heard of it before so was curious.
He described the Healing Codes and it sounded a little crazy. He demo’d it and it looked strange. Afterwards, the recipient said that she no longer felt stressed about that issue. Then we were asked to get into pairs and try it ourselves. I felt resistance; I think due to the references to God, although the speaker had assured us we could use whichever word we chose. It involved saying a prayer out loud, a bit like the command statement in theta healing. It’s strange that after all the things I’ve tried and the weird experiences I’ve had, that I still find myself sometimes thinking “I'm not sure I want to do this” and coming up against discomfort. But I nudged myself into it.
First my partner stated what his worry/issue was, then he said the prayer statement out loud, then he had to think of someone he loved and hold onto that feeling of love in his heart area throughout the healing. As practitioner, I had to focus on sending love to him through my hands; holding my hands in a particular shape over his eyes, then neck, temple and jaw. As I started into it though, it felt very similar to Reiki and my partner’s head started to drop as he went into a meditative state. It felt wonderful and afterwards he said that he didn’t feel concerned about the issue in the same way. We swapped and that was my experience also.
At the pub afterwards, the practitioner told me that The Healing Codes came from Dr Alex Lloyd. He had discovered the approach when on a plane. He had prayed for help for his wife who was deeply depressed. He felt the ‘codes’ ‘coming to him’, capturing them on paper and by the end of the journey he had an approach which did go on to help his wife to wellness. So his experience is described in terms of prayer and is similar in experience to descriptions of channeling.
Let me briefly share thoughts too from the second talk on mindfulness meditation. The speaker, a senior lecturer, said she had been asked to supervise someone’s PhD on the impact of mindfulness meditation so thought she would experience it herself. She went on a week long residential course that she described as the most transformative experience of her life and now teaches it professionally. As an academic lecturer by trade, she described some of the neurological research on mindfulness e.g. increased brain coherence (both hemispheres in tune with each other) and an increase in mass of the left prefrontal cortex (I think!) from regular practice. Also the reduction in the stress hormones in the blood.
The speaker was great; but what I found interesting was her enthusiasm to show that mindfulness was 'scientific'. The implication that certain therapies are more 'scientific' is common and suggests that they're more effective or valuable than other approaches,to be demoted in comparison. And yet, Jon Kabat-Zinn is credited with introducing mindfulness here and he studied eastern approaches in spiritual settings. He demonstrated its effectiveness and then the science sought to explain it. Without his pioneering, science may have continued to reject it but now it is available on the NHS in the UK. It's odd sometimes that you need to show something on an EEG machine before it will be given airspace or consideration. It makes me wonder what other, perhaps more powerful approaches are already out there, condemned to the shadows for want of the right technology.
