"I don't dislike your house," Lucy argues, and Tim pulls a face. "I don't! It's just so ... plain. There's nothing personal on the walls. It needs some color!"

"OK, so how about this?" Tim reaches for her hands. "If you move in with me, you're right. There's no rent. And we can redecorate. However you want."

"Really?"

"Sure. You did good with this place. It's cozy. Colorful, like you said, with the ..." He gestures at the orange wall.

"Accent wall," Lucy supplies.

"Yeah, that. We can have an accent wall."

Lucy smiles, leaning in to kiss him softly.

FILE: test subject #5847, who also goes by the name of emmilina “emmy” foxx, is a twenty three among the b sector of the facility. they have presented the ability of invisibility , which goes against their outgoing and stubborn behavior. their contract has been ongoing for 6 years.

HISTORY

has always been a kind girl

grew up in a relatively good home ; they weren’t rich or anything but had enough money to live with the essentials

**her younger sister ( who’s literally her best friend ) got into a car accident which ended up leaving her in severe condition and she spent many months in the hospital

^ during that time, emmy was literally so broken & lost. her grades fumbled, she was so lost and worried about her sister

her family life only got worse from the time of her sister’s crash. they were in much dept & barely had enough to scrape by --- which is why she agreed to sign the slade contract. to pay for the hospital bills

LIFE IN SLADE

emmy knew that there was a slim chance she would ever get out so she tried to make the best out of it

was never popular in school before slade & wanted to know what it was like and so that’s exactly what she did. she made friends, was a genuine person and gave people hope

whenever she’d regret going or have a low moment, emmy would remember her sister and remember why she was there

emmilina actually has & always wears the necklace her sister gave her for her birthday. she literally refuses to take it off

Tim repeats the words softly, a soothing litany from where he's kneeling next to Lucy's side of the bed. His hand rests on top of the quilt, palm up and fingers loose in open invitation.

Lucy is sitting against the headboard, breathing hard and staring into an unseen distance. Whatever she was dreaming about, she doesn't need to speak for Tim to see how much it's upset her.

He knows the exact moment his words break through whatever demons she's fighting. Her breathing starts to even out and her gaze focuses on something across the room.

She grabs his hand and holds on tight.

"Because it wouldn't have made it any better." Tim drags a gauze pad carefully across Lucy's forehead. "And making you panic would have made it worse. It still looks worse than it is."

"It looks really bad! You heard the plastic surgeon -" She pushes his hand away, then catches it in her own. tim squeezes her fingers, remembering the look on her face when they'd paged a specialist. An abundance of caution, the ER attending had called it, given how close the gash had landed to her eye. "It's probably going to scar."

"Face wounds do that, Luce. Just think how tough you'll look." She laughs dryly, and Tim brushes a stray hair from her face. "I'm serious. Everyone will know that my fiancee is a badass."

Tim pulls her loose so he can walk, but when she’s got both of her hands wrapped around one of his, he groans loudly and lifts her up. It’s not a great bicep curl, but she’s big enough that he can feel the pull in his arm when her feet leave the ground.

Will/Angie & "I'm not a lot of people's favourite person."

OK, I know this took ages, but in my defense it got wildly out of hand and now it's a whole thing. Happy belated, babes!

“Don’t think so hard over there, Ange. You’re gonna set off the smoke alarm.” Will wipes his hands on a dish towel and hangs it back over the stove handle while Angie rolls her eyes.

“Shut up, Will.” She’s sitting on the couch, head propped up on one hand and feet tucked beside her. There’s no bite behind her words, even the playful sarcasm he's long come to expect.

That’s more telling than anything else, if Will is honest. If Angie’s stopped snarking at him, there’s something serious going on.

“Hey.” Kitchen cleaned up, he joins Angie in the living room. He takes the middle seat, not close enough to crowd her, but close enough that he can reach forward and brush a section of hair back from her shoulder. “What happened today?”

Angie shakes her head. “It’s not a big deal.”

“Must feel like it is though, if it’s got you pouting on my sofa like this.”

“I’m not pouting.”

“Alright,” he gives in, even though they both know she is. “You want to tell me what you’re not-pouting about?”

“It’s nothing. I just said something stupid today. Pissed Ormewood off.”

“Doesn’t seem like he makes that much of a challenge.”

“Yeah, well.” Angie laughs, sharp and bitter, then sighs. “I just … I don’t know. The whole ‘partner’ thing is new for me. Letting people in, you know? Finally thought we might have been getting somewhere with that, and I went and screwed it up.”

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

OK, well first of all, this is a cruel question. I had to go through all 53 fics I wrote last year and pick and choose?

I feel like the obvious answer would be Like I Still Look at You, but I'm not considering it for 2023 wrapup, because even though I posted it in 2023, most of the writing was done before then. Seriously, when I tell you I worked on that fic for over a year, I mean it.

All of that said, especially when I consider the "regardless of kudos/hits" part, I've got it down to a top three. I did a lot of writing for Mythic Quest last year, which is ... not a huge fandom, especially considering some of the other sandboxes I've played in, so some of those fics aren't going to win any sort of statistical metric, no matter how much I love them (which is a lot -- I love them a lot).

Everything's Gonna be Better (on the West Coast): this is inspired by one of my favorite songs, and it's so exciting when the fic I write comes out exactly the way it looked in my head. Reading it back over, I don't think I would change a thing.

We Do Nice: I wrote this in one sitting, on Christmas Day, thinking about how much I love the Christmas episode of MQ. The characterization feels so spot on for who Ian and Poppy are, and I'm especially proud of it because it reads exactly like a scene I could see in an episode of the show.

Everything Else is Semantics: Again, inspired so completely by one of my favorite moments in canon (if you've seen MQ, or honestly if you've heard me get riled up about it, you probably know the one), and I just took the energy and ran with it. It's light, it's goofy, and it incorporates some of my favorite running gags from canon. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and not better than admitting that I reread it pretty often.

3. list the top five books you read this year Oooh, making me get a head start on the reading wrap-up, I see! This was a GOOD year for five-star reads, but I narrowed my top five down to these, in no particular order:

In Five Years by Rebecca Searle

The Last Flight by Julie Clark

You and Me on Vacation (aka The People We Meet on Vacation) by Emily Henry

Sink or Sell by Margaret Rose

Bear With Me Now by Katie Shephard

All five stars, all incredible, and all books I recommend without hesitation. Stay tuned for the full breakdown on why, hopefully some time by mid-January. (Honorable mention to Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren, which is probably the fastest read of my year, and absolutely fantastic. But it was narrowly edged off of the top five just by how much time I've spent thinking about the others since I finished reading them).

10. your personal song of the year Ask Apple Music and it's Last Night, by Morgan Wallen. Which is a great song, and I know I listened to it endlessly.

That said, in terms of songs with a personal connection, I'm gonna go with Hating Stuff by Ian McConnell. It's not a song I discovered this year, and maybe not even the best song I listened to all year. But it sticks out because I've tried to make a point of finding more little things to appreciate, instead of always dwelling on the things that frustrate me. Enjoy this bit, probably my favorite set of lyrics from it:

16. did you manage to stick to your new year's resolutions this year? Nope! Here's the thing: I don't make them. I don't like feeling like I have to wait around for January to make changes in my life, and I don't like the pressure that comes with feeling like I "failed" if I didn't stick to something all year. I've tried some things to improve my life this year. Some of them worked, and I have kept/will keep using them. Others didn't, and that's OK too.

For the fanfiction writing asks: 14, 23, 47, 71

14. Favorite place to write? Oooooh ... I'm comfiest when I write on my couch, sitting in front of a TV tray with my laptop. But I do my best writing at work, either standing at the front desk or sitting in front of my computer in the back office.

23. Is writing the beginning, middle or end of the story the easiest? Hardest? OK, endings are DEFINITELY the hardest part. Trying to get the story tied down, and still find something nice and poignant to close out on is the worst part of writing for me (except titles and summaries, obviously).

Easiest varies fic to fic, if I'm being honest. Most of the time, I start out with a super clear vision of one or two scenes, then build the rest of the plot around that. Sometimes it lends itself really neatly to a creative, fun opening line, but sometimes I spend hours staring at the blank page before I throw something down to noodle at later.

47. Is there a trope that you've written before but are now sick of? Not that I can think of? The closest I can come up with is maybe the specific variation of "only one bed" where the hotel has a Magical System Error and changes the reservation from two beds to one. Even that isn't so bad; I'm just really particular about how it comes together, because my professional knowledge bogs me down in the little details.

71. Do you have a fic you wish got more love? Maybe? Most of the time I'm pretty good about writing for myself, and letting anyone else who likes it just be a fun bonus. That said, it's been an adjustment as I move from Chenford (a pretty sizeable fandom) to some of the smaller fandoms I've written for lately. The feedback has all been positive, but there's less of it. I know why, and I understand why it works that way, but sometimes it's hard to remind myself that, say, my Will Trent or MQ fics aren't "worse" just because they have so many fewer hits/kudos than Chenford writing.
