Emma had lost count of how many drinks she had about an hour ago. All she knew was that it wasn’t enough. She was drunk but she wasn’t nearly drunk enough to fill the hole in her chest. Emma thought he knew what emptiness was, she thought she knew what loneliness was but it had been nothing like this. She felt as as if she was an exposed wire - something that would go off as soon as it was disturbed. She couldn’t believe how utterly exhausted she felt. Was she simply supposed to burn out this soon? It didn’t feel right. She wanted to feel the anger she had first felt when she had heard ; that one moment of rage that had overshadowed everything else. How dare anyone had harmed her little sister? Ella, who had been so much kinder, brighter - better than her. It was so much better than this numbness that had enveloped her since then. 

The bar was mostly empty by now. It was late and after the attack, people wanted to spend time with their families but Emma couldn’t stand to look at hers. Not when the only person she had cared for was gone. It hit her like a knife every time she thought of it. She gestured to the bartender for another round of drinks, even though the one in front of her wasn’t finished yet when she saw Rita standing there. Emma blinked up at her, taking a moment before she was really able to focus on her. Looking at Rita always hurt but this was something else. She wanted to be cruel, wanted to remind her that she hated her but her voice sounded hollow even to her own ears, “What do you want?”
