A Few Firsts
“Oh, I just can’t believe how fast all my babies are growing up…” Jade rolls her eyes.
“I’m going to school dad, not shipping myself off to war or getting married. Emilio’s been going to Hogwarts for a few years now.” She’s trying her hardest to look at anything but her adoptive father, but one glimpse is all she needs. He’s smiling wide with pride, eyes tired and teary, but happy. It’s completely sappy and overdramatic, but it warms Jade’s heart a tiny bit.
“I know. You’ve just grown up so much and now you’re leaving!”
Jade hears a chuckle from behind her and looks up at her papa. “It won’t be for forever, Sammy. They can always come back during the winter and summer breaks.” Diego leans in to give Sam a kiss on the temple and wraps an arm around him, squeezing slightly for a moment. “Jade can also write home every so often, right?”
She shrugs, feigning disinterest. No matter what she says or how she acts, she will miss the presence of both her fathers and her siblings.
“Oh Sammy, look! It’s Macarena!” The family’s attention is turned to a tall woman with two-toned hair. It’s Neon Welkin. She must feel eyes on her because she looks over to them and waves. “I forgot; her daughter Ro is starting this year too. And Laura’s twins,” Diego says as he grins and waves back. Jade scans the crowd of people around Neon and sees Ro, her brother Tiago, and the two who must be the twins: Lore and Thibault.
“I wonder if any of them will be sorted into the same house as Jade or Emilio… That would be nice for them to know at least someone,” Sam says. He has a far-off look in his eyes. His eyes suddenly focus back on her. “You will write and tell us what house you get sorted into as soon as possible, right Jade?”
She averts her eyes and scoffs, shifting her weight to one leg. “Yeah, sure. Whatever.” She doesn’t have to look to know he has a fond smile on his face.
Before she realizes it, Sam is wrapping her up in a tight hug. She tenses in his embrace, still not used to so much affection even after about four years. “Oh, I’m going to miss you so much, Jade.” She sighs and awkwardly pats his back.
“Yeah, yeah, okay Dad. Chill out before you get tears on my jacket,” she huffs. Her older brother Emilio smiles at her. He had to endure this already, about five years ago; now it is Jade’s turn. She should be thankful Sam isn’t as emotional as when they were dropping Emilio off for the first time. Diego had to pry Sam off him.
When Sam pulls back to hold Jade at arm’s length, his eyes are watery again. “Okay. Okay, please stay out of too much trouble and write. And of course, please have fun, Jade. You aren’t a child for long, enjoy it. And don’t forget that Diego and I love you.”
She rolls her eyes and shrugs him off. “Yeah, okay. Love you too; are you done yet?”
Sam nods and pulls away, but Diego immediately replaces the spot in front of Jade. “Remember what I taught you if someone bothers you. Don’t be the person people need defending from, but please help if you see someone who needs it. They will thank you.” He hugs her tightly. “And remember you and your brother always have each other. Protect each other.” He plants a kiss on the top of her head and pulls away. “But again, have fun.”
Her papa’s blindingly charming smile is the last thing she sees before she turns to head onto the train with her brother.
The roar of students chatting in the Great Hall gives Jade a bit of a headache. ‘Why do there have to be so damn many annoying people?’
One kid in her year was particularly annoying. “I don’t even know why my parents bothered sending me here. I’m way better off teaching myself. I bet I already know everything they’re gonna teach the entire first month. Honestly, I’m too good for this school.” ‘Pfft… What a loudmouth.’
Jade rolls her eyes and tries her best to tune him out. He is kind of cute but having so much arrogance in one body will give her a headache.
While Jade is focused on not focusing, the sorting begins. She only pays attention to the grumbling in her stomach and the details of the room for most of it until she is called up.
She crosses her arms in front of her when she sits down and suppresses a shiver when the old hat that goes on everyone else’s heads is placed on her own. “Hmmm now who do we have here?” The disembodied voice sounds like Sam when he doesn’t want to say something in front of other people. “Another Gabehart? Would Ravenclaw suit you? Perhaps not. Oh, but I see you’ve built up many walls; are you afraid someone will hurt you again?” She gasps aloud. ‘What?’
“How about Gryffindor? You’re definitely not afraid to stand up for yourself.” She thinks to Valerian and how she would do anything to keep him safe. “Oh? Then Hufflepuff wouldn’t be a bad fit either, eh?” Jade thinks about her brother Emilio and her papa, Diego. Would she really fit in there? “Your family is Hufflepuff too, that’s right. Well, either way, I know the perfect place to put you.” And then finally, the hat booms, “SLYTHERIN!” She’s relieved the dirty old hat is being removed from her hair.
She plops down in her seat far away from everyone else and props her elbow up on the table, placing her chin in the palm of her hand.
“Handoris, Narcissus.” ‘Oh… Is that the annoying kid’s name? Hm…’ The second the hat is even close to the boy’s head it shouts “SLYTHERIN!” Oh good god, he’s in her house.
The next person Jade bothers to pay attention to is Lorena Landon and the only reason Jade looked up was because of the disruption in the clapping. ‘A hatstall maybe?’ No, just short of being one. “HUFFLEPUFF!” comes the final decision. Well… alright then. The Hufflepuff table cheers as she stands and calmly walks over to her table.
Her brother Thibault is next. He looks nervous. It doesn’t take half as long for him as it did his sister. Soon after he sits down and the hat is placed on him, the hat shouts out “SLYTHERIN!”
Confusion strikes Jade and she watches the boy, who is obviously terrified, scuttle over to her table. He sits next to no one and refuses to look anyone in the eye. ‘Poor thing, he reminds me of Val… These people will chew him up and spit him out.’
She silently vows to protect him if she ever sees anyone picking on him.
It’s close to the end when Jade recognizes another name. “Welkin, Rocio.”
Her eyebrows raise slightly, and she looks up to see the familiar two-toned hair. ‘I wonder where it’ll put her…’ Ro walks up to the stool, her face looking like it’s made of stone. She has an air of confidence around her that Jade finds interesting. It reminds her of the girl’s mother.
Ro’s sorting is long like Lore’s and Jade wonders what the hat is saying to her. Eventually, a loud “GRYFFINDOR” is heard, and Ro stands with no hint of any change of emotion on her face as she goes to her own table. Hm… It would’ve been nice to at least know someone in her house.
It’s hell to find any of Jade’s classes on the first day. Her first class of the day is potions and she arrives with the general crowd, not wanting to stick out or draw attention to herself. She looks around the classroom and sits as far away from the professor and other students as possible. Students file in, eyes wide and bright as they enter. Any that try to sit even remotely close to her, she gives a deadly glare to. Perhaps she should have been a little more sociable and at least tried to make friends, but it was too early in the morning and the stupid poltergeist had already pissed her off. She was not in the mood to talk to anyone.
By scaring off the less annoying kids, she set herself up to get stuck with one student in particular.
Narcissus, the arrogant prick, strolled in nearly late and went to go sit in one of the two only open seats but the kid sitting there already stuck their nose up at him and snapped at him to go sit next to one of his fellow snakes. Jade had to stop herself from snarling at the kid, but Narcissus just shrugged, claiming that it was their loss, and looked around for another open seat… which happened to be the one next to Jade. His pretty green eyes light up when they land on her. She notices him smile when he sees the empty seat next to her.
She rolls her eyes and shoves her things over so that he has room to sit next to her. She turns and rests her elbow on the table and lays her head on her hand so that she’s turned away from the other Slytherin, clearly trying to indicate that she didn’t want to talk.
“Hey, I’m Narciss the great from Sparrowbourgh, the third to Handoris. You’re Jade right?”
Well, so much for trying to silently tell him she didn’t want to talk. She picks her head up off her hand to look back at him through bored eyes and turns back, putting her head in her hand again without a word.
“I remember you from the Sorting Ceremony. Good thing you were sorted into the same house as me. Better than Gryffindor or boring old Ravenclaw.”
She slowly puts her arm down and looks him in the eye. She freezes when she takes a second to actually look at him. His eyes practically glow and-… is that eyeshadow? She blinks to shake herself out of it and fixes him with a bored stare. “What’s wrong with Ravenclaws?”
“Well, they’re pretty much all introverted, stuck up, know-it-alls. Not to mention how booooring they all are. Do they really have to be such sticklers for rules?”
She glares at him and straightens her back a little, setting her shoulders. “My dad’s a Ravenclaw.”
He shrugs like it’s nothing. “He’s from another generation. Like my cousins. They’re cooler.” Jade snorts at his nonchalant response and props her head upon her hand again.
Professor Slughorn chooses that moment to start class and Jade couldn’t be happier because it means that she’ll have a break from Narciss’ incessant talking.
“Merlin, this class sucks. The professor can’t teach worth anything. Even the textbooks are old and useless.”
Jade wants to scream.
Unfortunately for Jade, Narciss shares many of Jade’s classes with her. And in every single class they share, Narciss hogs the seat next to her. It seems he’s immune to her glaring and waspish comments.
She’s in the middle of explaining it to her brother when he interjects, the moron, with, “Well maybe the little guy likes you. I would not be surprised.”
She scoffs. “Why would he like me? He barely even knows me.”
Emilio’s amber eyes sparkle with something she can’t quite put her finger on. “Could be love at first sight, tonta. You never know, you could meet your soulmate anytime and anywhere.”
“You sound like Papa, viejo,” she snaps. He chuckles warmly.
“You’ll understand someday, Princesa.”
At hearing the silly nickname, she slaps his arm. “¡Cállate!” The Hufflepuff’s laughter is heard down the hall.
“Hello there, Beautiful…” coos Narcissus, which prompts Jade to roll her eyes.
“What do you want now?” Jade fixes him with a death glare. He only smiles brightly, which Jade thinks makes him look arrogant.
“Just to see how the most gorgeous girl in school is doing.”
She scoffs and shoves him away from her. “Well I was doing fine until you showed up.”
There’s a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. “And now you’re doing much better? I’m not surprised, I can brighten anyone’s day.”
“Oh fuck off.” She punches his shoulder somewhat lightly and takes a sharp right to try to ditch him.
Later that day Jade finds herself sitting alone near the end of the table in the Great Hall. The closer to the doors, the faster she can leave and avoid the crowd. As she’s lifting a bite of her food to her mouth, surprise, surprise, Narcissus sits down in front of her. “Having a nice dinner, Princess?”
She sends him a dirty look. “Don’t make me throw something at you. I think I may have just lost my appetite.” She sets the food down and gets up. It’s as she’s getting up when a small explosion goes off a little way down the table, not far from her. She freezes in fear and for a second all she sees is the ruble of her old house. Her eyes dart over to where the sound originated.
A Slytherin boy’s soup exploded in his face. At least that was all that it was… Jade hears snickering and whips her head around to see who may have been the cause of that.
It’s a few first-year boys, trying and failing to look inconspicuous. Enraged that they were able to make her so afraid for those few seconds, she marches up to them, eyes aflame.
“Hey. Hey idiots.” She snarls. They all glance up at her in confusion. She can’t wait to wipe the stupid expression off each of their stupid faces. “What the hell was that about?”
One of them snorts and leans back in his seat, seeming at ease despite how clearly upset she is. It makes her blood boil. “We were just teaching the snake a lesson. Run along, go finish your dinner little girl.”
Something inside Jade snaps and she rips the boy out of his seat by his tie. “Listen up, you stupid fucker, because I’m only saying this once. You pull that shit again? And I’m twisting your weak little twig of an arm until it breaks. You got that?” The kids still sitting are scared shitless but the one in her grasp still looks smug.
“Oh yeah? You wouldn’t dare. I bet you don’t even know how to break-” Jade takes that as an opportunity to slug him as hard as she can, square in the nose. He lets out a high-pitched whimper upon impact and she throws him back down.
“Have fun dealing with a broken nose, asshole.”
She turns on her heel and sits down heavily into her seat from before. Narcissus is looking at her funny.
“What?” He simply smiles.
“You’re amazing.” The compliment throws her for a loop and makes her brain short circuit. She can feel her stomach fluttering.
“Thanks…”

BACK IN TIME: LONDON FASHION WEEK 2012
Lady Gaga attended London Fashion Week in September 2012 where she was the VIP guest at Philip Treacy’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection at the Royal Courts of Justice, his first London show in 13 years! Big dose of the 80s in his very personal tribute to the global fashion icons Michael Jackson, Alexander McQueen and Isabella Bow.
Gaga had a maximum of four costume changes throughout the night, all styled by Brandon Maxwell. Let’s delve!
Gaga took her front row seat, wearing absolutely stunning strapless bottle green embossed velvet bustier dress with flared skirt from Alexander McQueen’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection.
She styled the look with luxurious gold and black baroque lurex leggings by Emilio Cavallini,...
...a Philip Treacy flower helmet (many of you wrote me it reminded you of the VMA 2009 feather headdress, also made by Treacy) and Christmas Star ring seen on Philip Treacy‘s Spring/Summer 2013 runway, created in collaboration with jeweller Gianluigi Zoccheddu who used Swarovski elements (Swarovski supported Treacy‘s show - both labels have had a long-standing partnership which began when Isabella Blow introduced Philip to Nadja Swarovski in the late 90s).
The bottle green leather lace-up platform ankle booties with almond toe are from Alexander McQueen’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection.
Gaga opened the show with “Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest milliner in the world: Philip Treacy”, wearing Anastasiya mesh bodysuit and leggings from Bebaroque’s Fall/Winter 2012 “Tsarina” collection, inspired by the Russian empire and royal opulence.
Anastasiya, featuring hand embroidered floral appliqué combining boasting petrol toned bugle beads with clear and royal blue tone crystals, is the crown design of the collection.
The floor-length hot-pink burqa is from Undercover by Jun Takahashi Spring/Summer 2003 “Scab” collection. The sheer, all body covering garment was one of the finale numbers of Paris debut fashion show of the cult label. The burqa Gaga wore belonged to Isabella Blow.
Gaga accessorized the look with a pearl tiara from Susan Caplan’s vintage collection, her custom-made Pleaser boots and the aforementioned Philip Treacy Christmas Star ring.
After the show, Gaga was photographed leaving the Royal Courts of Justice wearing one of the looks from the show, and Michael’s iconic glove.
If you were, same as me, growing with Michael’s music, I don’t have to add the cream wool suit jacket covered in white vermicelli beading, with faux pearl covered lapel and armband in square black Swarovski crystals designed by Tompkins & Bush (MJ’s costume designers during 25 years), was worn by Michael back in 1991 for the Oscars.
The look was also crowned with the freshly-debuted Mickey Mouse ear helmet with Swarovski crystals from Philip Treacy’s runway.
She teamed it with custom Pleaser black satin-covered platform boots.
When leaving the after party to return to her hotel, Gaga donned a custom Adrienne Landau fur and cashmere cape with indigo fox tails, worn with a matching silk headscarf. Probably my favourite look of the night.
She accessorized the look with more vintage crystal jewelry from Susan Caplan’s archives, Philip Treacy Christmas Star ring, bespoke Pleaser beige lace-up ankle boots with lace overlay, and neon yellow and pink color block “Cunt” clutch, custom-made by J Maskrey.

You Are My Sunshine
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
/You are my sunshine\
The warmth next to Sam shifts and he groans. He clings to the body next to him and presses his face closer. A low chuckle rumbles below him and he can’t help but smile. “Morning, Sunshine.” Diego presses a kiss to Sam’s fluffy white hair. “How is Mr. Caplan-Gabehart this morning?” Sam’s morning fogged brain takes a second to remember. They’re married now. He lets out a delighted sigh and lifts his head up just enough to look at his husband.
“Wonderful~… And you, Mr. Caplan-Gabehart?” Sam stretches his neck to place a soft kiss on Diego’s lips, to which he receives a sleepy smile.
“Never better, mi amor.” Diego brushes Sam’s hair out of his face so that he can gaze into his wonderful amber eyes that are always so full of love and adoration. “What shall we do on the first official day of our honeymoon?”
Sam yawns and rests his head back down on Diego’s chest. “Hm… I think we should stay in bed all day. What do you say?” Sam tightens the arm that’s slung around Diego’s abdomen and the man laughs.
“Sounds good to me, Sunshine.” He carefully rolls over to face Sam and wraps him up in his arms, kissing him tenderly.
/My only sunshine\
Years later, Sam finds himself taking their six children out for lunch on a hot summer day. Diego was on a dueling tour and he had been away for a few weeks now. Sam sent him letters nearly every day, telling him how much he missed him and what the children were up to.
Emilio, their oldest, is a near-perfect copy of Diego, only with Sam’s eyes and curly hair. Jade is the second oldest and avoids spending too much time with Sam- not that he minds terribly- but will gladly spend the entire day with Valerian Lee, the two as close as cousins. Robin loves helping Sam prepare salves for his patients and various other potions that he uses from day to day. Blair and Jaime are mischievous little rascals and Sam loves them with all his heart. Lane is his oddball but is a sweetheart and he couldn’t be prouder of all his children.
He sits with them in the cozy café and watches each of them interact with a fond smile on his face. Jade rolls her eyes when she sees that Jaime refuses to cut his food into smaller pieces and does it for him. The smirk on his face suggests he was only doing it to tease her. Blair is staring off into space… until Sam realizes he’s just staring at some boy around his age. Sam has to cover his mouth to prevent himself from laughing. Like father like son, they say. Lane is pushing their food away from each other. Nothing can touch on their plate.
“Lane, sweetheart, how did you enjoy Hogwarts this year? What was your favorite class?” They instantly perk up, though it’s subtle. Their eyes widen slightly, and they sit straighter in their chair. “Herbology. Plants are nice…” They have a small, self-satisfied smile on their face, and it fills Samuel with warmth. “I’m sure Uncle Lau will be happy to hear that.”
Sam brings a bite of his sandwich to his mouth when someone comes up to stand next to him. He looks up at the woman standing in front of him. Her grim expression is enough to send dread shivering down his spine. “Can I help you?” he asks timidly.
“Are you Samuel? Diego Caplan’s husband?” Oh no.
“Um… Yes. Why- Is there something wrong?”
She looks around at the children. “Is there a chance we could talk in private?” Sam’s fatherly instincts kick in, his chest instantly puffing out a little.
“Why?” he demands. The woman starts to look uncomfortable.
“It’s a rather… delicate matter. Perhaps just a table away.” He pauses and thinks about that. That shouldn’t be too bad…
He nods and stands up, glancing over his children before he turns. Jade is giving him an unreadable expression, but he can tell she is uneasy. He tries to give her an encouraging smile. He sees Emilio put an encouraging hand on her shoulder as he turns his gaze away. He sits across the woman in a table adjacent to the one his kids are at. He watches her discreetly cast a silencing spell.
“It’s about your husband, Mr. um... Mr. Caplan.” Instantly, he is annoyed. Why can’t she just spit it out? “There was a terrible accident and Diego was hurt. He’s in the hospital... You should be with him.”
Everything in Sam’s world seems to freeze. ‘… terrible accident… hurt… hospital.’ He stares at her in disbelief. He opens his mouth to say something, but words escape him. He looks like a fish out of water, gaping at the air. He looks over to the children, who are talking quietly amongst themselves. What will they say? They’re all so young… He turns back to the woman. Finally, he sucks in a breath and sets his shoulders. Sam tries his best to swallow the lump in his throat.
“Where?”
/You make me happy when skies are grey\
Sam walks down the blindingly white hallways with a growing sense of impending doom and panic is rising in his throat. He doesn’t notice the worried glances other people give him as he passes by. He’s only counting down the seconds until he can see his soulmate again. His husband. His Diego. Finally, the doctor that is guiding him to the room stops beside a door. Sam hesitates. ‘What if it’s worse than they thought? What if it’s irreversible and he’s crippled for life? What if he doesn’t wake up for months?’
He takes a deep breath and takes a step into the room.
Something isn’t right… Sam notices with foreboding that this isn’t a patient room.
Diego is on a cold metal table. Sam’s blood runs cold.
The woman said he was only hurt. That meant he still had time. He had to… He didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye. There must have been a mistake.
The doctor that lead him here puts a hand on Sam’s shoulder and gives him an apology, but Sam can’t hear it. He can’t take his eyes off the cold, motionless form in front of him. Sam thinks back to how he was only a few weeks ago…
Diego’s laughter rings out clear in their house. “No, no, mija. Mira, like this.” He says, adjusting his own stance. “Back a little more… There you go.”
Samuel walks into the room with a small fond smile on his face. Jade looks mildly annoyed, but they all know she doesn’t mind the extra dueling advice. She whips her long black hair behind her and tries the stance again. “So, then I cast it right? Knock them on their ass?” Diego laughs again as Sam scolds her for her language.
“Relax, mi amor. They all go to Hogwarts now, it’s not like they haven’t heard it before.” Jade smiles when she thinks no one is looking. Sam rolls his eyes and walks over to wrap his arms around Diego and give him a kiss on the cheek.
“Either way, dinner is ready. Put the lesson on pause and eat something.” Diego flashes his husband his winning smile and kisses him. “Of course, dear. Anything for you.”
There is no way this is his Diego. His sweet, charming Diego, who comforted him when he was upset about his love letter. Diego, that kissed him and loved him when he couldn’t even love himself. Diego, the man he vowed to love until the end of time… until death do them part. A flood of emotion hits him, and he feels anger and disbelief.
/You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you\
The animagus whips around at the doctor and fixes him with a glare, tears prickling his eyes. “If this is a joke, this isn’t funny,” Sam snarls.
The doctor looks at him with pity and it only succeeds in making his blood boil. “I’m sorry Mr. Caplan. Diego is gone.”
Gone.
The words hit him like a freight train, and he’s left breathless. The word “gone” echoes in his brain. “No… No!” Diego’s radiant smile. “That is not Diego!” ‘Ah, there you are, mi amor. I missed you.’ “Where is he?!” ‘I love you, forever and always, my Sunshine.’ “Where’s my husband?!” Sam screeches, rushing forward to ball his fists up in the doctor’s uniform and shake him until he tells him. “No! No!” Tears that had been building up now overflow and spill down his cheeks. “No…” he whimpers, his grip on the other man’s clothes loosening. He sobs, all the strength in him leaving, and he slips to the floor. ‘My baby, my sweet, sweet husband… Why did you leave me?’
/Please don’t take my sunshine away\

STUDY GUIDE FOR FRONTLINE’S “THE VACCINE WAR”War
Please answer the questions on another piece of paper as thoroughly as possible, and please keep in mind that I am the dumbest person. I will most likely not understand short and vague answers.
1. Why does Jennifer Margulis choose to not fully vaccinate her children? What is her reasoning?
2. Dr. Anthony Fauci and Arthur Caplan talk about their childhood experiences with infectious diseases such as polio. What are their eyewitness accounts of polio and how do they help support the pro-vaccine camp?
3. Who is Dr. Cynthia Cristofani? What is her expertise? What does she say about vaccines? How does her testimony help prove the pro-vaccine argument?
4. Who are Barabara Loe Fisher and J.B. Handley? Why are they critics of vaccines?
5. Who is Eric Fombonne, and what is his expertise? What does he have to say about any possible link between vaccines and autism? What is his (and other experts’) logical appeal about the non-causal relationship between vaccines and autism?
6. Who is Anders Hviid? What did he research, and what did his research prove? What does he have to say about people still believing in a link between vaccines and autism?
7. Who is Vanessa Fontan? What is her story? How and why is it emotionally powerful? How do her story and the images of her in the emergency room create a powerful emotional appeal? How does her story support the need for herd immunity?
