Sassuolo Ch F: Jesper de Jong def. Daniel Altmaier [4] 7-6(5), 6-1 Match Stats
📸 ATP official website
Altmaier had his moments until the part where he should have served for the first set, but de Jong steadily turned it around thanks to his point construction execution as it seemed like both of them were engaged in a drop-shot or some volley festivals in between. This way, the unseeded Dutch player created 12 break points, two times more than Altmaier's 6 throughout both sets despite converting 42% of them compared to Altmaier's 33%, signifying his accuracy and intuitiveness as he built his points.
Furthermore, de Jong also had a more solid service game as he appeared firmer in the second set. Even though both players scored 3 aces, de Jong had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 80%, 46% higher than Altmaier. However, despite both players double-faulting twice, Altmaier's rushed follow-ups in the second set did not help, making it more prone to de Jong's deep attacking, fading the former's second serve winning percentage 7% below the Dutchman as a result.
This marked de Jong's first Challenger-level title for the first time since the Almaty Challenger 2021, continuing his positive trend this season as he rose to 119 live (putting him 19 lines away from the Top 100!). On the other hand, this could be pivotal to Altmaier's rebuilding as he went back to 75 live thanks to his runner-up run, and for the former, the Wimbledon qualification rounds await for the upcoming week.

Italy bans fans from sporting events over coronavirus outbreak
MILAN — All sporting events in Italy will take place without fans present for at least the next month due to the virus outbreak in the country, the Italian government announced on Wednesday.
That will likely see the Italian soccer league resume in full this weekend with the calendar pushed back a week.
Italy is the epicenter of Europe’s coronavirus outbreak. More than 100 people have died and more than 3,000 have been infected with COVID-19.
The Italian government issued a new decree on Wednesday evening, with measures it hopes will help contain the spread of the virus.
All sporting events throughout the country must take place without fans present until April 3. Schools and universities have been ordered to close until March 15.
Premier Giuseppe Conte posted a five-minute video on his Facebook page, reassuring people and saying that the decree was a way of assuring “responsible behavior.”
He said banning crowds at sporting events would help “prevent further opportunities of infection.”
Key games during the period includes Juventus’ Champions League game against Lyon. The second leg of the round-of-16 match is scheduled for March 17 in Turin.
Inter Milan and Roma also have Europa League games scheduled, against Getafe and Sevilla, respectively. Inter played Ludogrets inside an empty stadiu m last week in the previous Europa League round.
The decree also calls into question Italy’s Six Nations rugby match against England in Rome on March 14. That match will either have to go ahead in an empty stadium or be postponed. Italy’s match against Ireland, which was scheduled for March 7, had already been postponed.
In tennis, Italy is set to play South Korea in a Davis Cup qualifier this weekend in Cagliari, Sardinia.
The Italian soccer federation confirmed in a statement that all Serie A and Italian Cup matches would be played without fans for the duration of the decree.
The Italian soccer league’s governing body has yet to release a revised schedule but reports say the six Serie A soccer matches that were postponed last week will now be played this weekend. That includes one of the biggest matches of the season — the Juventus-Inter game, known as the “Derby d’Italia” or Italy’s derby.
Inter’s match against Sampdoria was one of four matches postponed the previous weekend. And the club’s president Steven Zhang is facing disciplinary action for insulting Serie A president Paolo Dal Pino in an Instagram post reacting to the way the Italian league is handling the fallout from the virus outbreak.
Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta also publicly criticized the league but tempers appeared to have cooled by Wednesday.
“Playing in empty stadiums could be the only way to keep the league going until the end in light of the restrictions that the government is rightly indicating,” Marotta said after a meeting at the Serie A headquarters in Rome, but before the decree was announced.
Four Serie A matches went ahead last weekend with fans present as they were taking place in areas that had not been affected by measures to control the outbreak.
A decree on Sunday extended the suspension of all sporting events in Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna until March 8.
The region of Lombardy is the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak and there are further clusters in the other two northern regions.

Milan residents banned from Juventus vs AC Milan Italian Cup semifinal due to coronavirus threat
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/milan-residents-banned-from-juventus-vs-ac-milan-italian-cup-semifinal-due-to-coronavirus-threat/
Milan residents banned from Juventus vs AC Milan Italian Cup semifinal due to coronavirus threat
Residents of Milan will not be allowed to attend the Italian Cup semifinal match between Juventus and AC Milan on Wednesday at Allianz Stadium in Turin as part of anti-coronavirus precautions being taken.
The second leg of the semifinals will be off limits to residents of the regions of Lombardy, which contains Milan, and Emilia Romagna and Veneto, plus the provinces of Pesaro, Urbino and Savona – the areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 virus.
Juventus made the announcement on Monday, asking fans to show up early so their identification cards can be checked carefully.
The first leg ended 1-1.
No such ban has yet been put in place for the other semifinal match between Napoli and Inter Milan at San Paolo Stadium in southern Italy.
A total of 10 Serie A matches in Italy have been postponed over the past two weekends because of the coronavirus.
Lombardy has been the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak, registering the first positive test of the northern cluster and now counting 984 of Italy’s 1,694 cases.
Meanwhile, German media reported that a local soccer fan is suspected of infecting people in Salzburg with the virus while traveling there for last week’s Salzburg-Eintracht Frankfurt game in the Europa League. It was unclear if the person actually attended the game, which was postponed for 24 hours because of bad weather.
Also, the International Biathlon Union announced that a World Cup in the Czech Republic will take place without spectators. The races in Nove Mesto, due to run from Thursday through Sunday, would likely have attracted 100,000 people.
Five-time Olympic gold medalist Martin Fourcade questioned why spectators were banned without similar restrictions for athletes and teams, “in spite of the fact we were all in Italy less than 14 days ago” at the world championships.
In Switzerland, where the federal government has prohibited events of more than 1,000 people, the ice hockey league decided on Monday to suspend play for two weeks. Playoffs were to begin in the top two divisions this weekend. The 24 clubs agreed at an emergency meeting to suspend all games until the current federal order expires on March 15.
In tennis, the Kunming Open in Anning, China, scheduled for April 27-May 3 was canceled. Another WTA tournament scheduled for earlier in April in Xi’an, China, had already been canceled.
Baseball’s final qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympics was postponed from April to June in Taiwan; while MotoGP organizers canceled the first two races of their season in Qatar and Thailand because of travel restrictions introduced amid the virus outbreak.
The International Ski Federation said it will wait until Friday before deciding if the World Cup finals in Cortina d’Ampezzo – in the hard-hit Veneto region – could go forward or not.
The Six Nations said the scheduled fixtures in its remaining two rounds this month will go ahead, including Italy’s match against England in Rome on March 14. However, the equivalent women’s and under-20 fixtures in Italy may be relocated.
Italy’s visit to Ireland this Saturday is the only match which has been postponed because of the virus.

De Jong then started the second set firmer than the first, as his well-anticipated working volley to Altmaier's drop shot created his latest break points (in between some other touches of gold) before breaking early to 1-0, where he immediately consolidated to 2-0 afterward. He then casually answered Altmaier's drop shot with a forehand volley slide once again to start the third game, dominating his way to double the break (3-0) before he strengthened his lead to 4-0.
The German fourth seed had his chances, opening the game after he held his serves (4-1) with a rare forehand winner before having 2 break points, but de Jong saved them before scoring a crucial volley for his game point, having a massive hold to 5-1, which became the longest game of the set. Subsequently, a deeply shanked forehand winner from the unseeded Dutch, which turned out to be on the line, secured his one-point lead before Altmaier's +1 forehand errors created his match point, which was immediately converted to serve the second-set breadstick (6-1) for the championship.

The next Challenger-level event in line was the Sassuolo Challenger, where both finalists survived their respective semifinal thrillers before making it to this stage. In this regard, fourth seed Daniel Altmaier stunned the first seed Federico Coria 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(3) in an almost 3-hour-30-minute rollercoaster ride, who took on Jesper de Jong, who defeated Martin Klizan 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 after a slow start in the first set. This match turned out to test their range consistency, which became the main issue as they went deep into the first set, which got carried on to set up the second set onwards.
Initially, Altmaier had a solid start to the match as he outhit de Jong's forehand to generate his break point before the latter's backhand errors converted the former's break point to 2-1. Subsequently, Altmaier consolidated his lead with a strong service game hold to 3-1, while de Jong tried to maintain his point construction to keep in touch as marked by his service game holds.
Then came the eighth game, where de Jong fired a drop shot as he capitalized on Altmaier's previous error to generate his break point before breaking back thanks to his casual forehand pass to Altmaier's drop shot (4-4). However, the moment did not stay long as Altmaier's working drop shots generated his initial break point, but his notable working smash (in a similar manner to a specific movie bar the non-existent hug in this match) created another break point before he broke by the end of that game (5-4).
This meant Altmaier earned a chance to serve for the first set, but the unseeded Dutch player started having ideas as he volleyed his way 2 points into the game. It took several more points before de Jong broke back again to 5-5 due to Altmaier's prevalent errors, where he followed with a service game hold (6-5). The tie-breaker then became inevitable, where Altmaier's +1 forehand error to de Jong's deep return set up the latter's set point (6-5 in the tie-breaker), which was immediately converted thanks to an ace for de Jong to take the first set 7-6(5).

Montechiarugolo Ch F: Alexandre Muller [3] def. Francesco Maestrelli 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Maestrelli woke up too late once he ended up being breadsticked in the first set and got broken at the other. The whole flow was in A. Muller's racquet, that even he could not match the French's pace while having a break point, which explained the non-conversion. Somehow, A. Muller's intricate play, including some swift returns and how he drove Maestrelli further off the balance, resulted in his 75% break point conversion rate.
On the other hand, even if Maestrelli scored 3 aces, his 2 double faults did not help in some crucial moments, especially in the first set. The thin margin came from the second serves, where Maestrelli was 1% ahead of A. Muller, who dominated his first serves by winning 82% of his points, inclusive of a lot of unreturned serves in between.
Adding this title to his breakthrough year, this was A. Muller's first Challenger title of the year after finishing as a runner-up in Waco Challenger this February, propelling his rankings to No. 82 per the current state of the live rankings. While this could still be a positive week for Maestrelli, his ability to match the pace could still remain the question along the way.

Jumping back to Montechiarugolo...
Maestrelli tried to raise his game, but A. Muller kept himself solid in this match. The former only had one chance to break, but none of them got converted as A. Muller came back to save them.
To confirm how solid he was in the second set, in the third game, a swift volley return from A. Muller resulted in the creation of his 2 break points before another Maestrelli error giving the former the break (2-1). Since then, he survived the aforementioned break-back attempt and managed to hold his service game (3-1).
Maestrelli was only able to hold 4 service games before A. Muller served for the match. Bar another hiccup, he sealed the title (6-4) perfectly thanks to his closing volley to top it off, securing his first Challenger title of the year after being a runner-up in Waco Challenger last February.

In Montechiarugolo...
Third seed Alexandre Muller kept his breakthrough rolling in the finals by facing Francesco Maestrelli in the finals. A. Muller previously dug deep to defeat Stefano Travaglia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Maestrelli dug even deeper to defeat sixth seed Giulio Zeppieri 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(2). The latter might have taken a toll, which could explain the flow of the first set.
To put it simply, the first set was in A. Muller's racquet. This was visible not only thanks to his aggressive, paced play, where his cross-court forehand pass created his break point prior to A. Muller's conversion at the expense of Maestrelli's double fault (3-1).
Subsequently, after consolidating his service game to 4-1, A. Muller came up with a swift volley return to create another break point before its conversion due to another error from Maestrelli. As a result, A. Muller had the chance to serve for the breadstick, which he served by holding to 15 after an unreturned serve (6-1).
