Animation Night 163 - Yokohama Kaidishi Kikou
Good evening everyone! It's time at last for Animation Night. And what do we have this week... did you guess an OVA from the 1990s? That's always a safe bet with me and sure enough that's what we have tonight: ヨコハマ買い出し紀行 Yokohama Kaidishi Kikou, or in English, Yokohama Shopping Log.
I'm going to keep my writeup tonight brief, because I am fully kvin's homework on this one and I think rather than paraphrase what he wrote, lemme link the article. Here is an introduction to the series...
Nearly 3 decades after it was first published, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou remains the poster child of mono no aware works in otaku media. Vaguely set after a catastrophe that collapsed both the planet’s ecology and human civilization as we knew it, an event that the series has no intention to explain, YKK stars android Alpha as she runs the desolate café that her long-gone master entrusted her with. Her episodic adventures are all about the appreciation of the moment, often with an emphasis on the evocative environments she casually comes across; after all, author Hitoshi Ashinano was inspired to pen this work by his fondness of taking a stroll or riding a motorcycle without a specific goal. Despite being an ode to spontaneity, YKK is also a thoroughly focused work—and the recipient of that focus is the passage of time, as well as how different beings process the ephemerality of things.
The manga is beautiful, and highly influential in establishing a certain genre of gentle post-apocalyptic works like Girl's Last Tour. But tonight we're here to see the OVAs, each of them just an hour, pulling out a selection of favourite episodes from the manga.
These two adaptations, despite coming just a few years apart, come at a point of major historical change: the first part is in the cel era, the second in digital.
For the first, we have director Takashi Anno, veteran of The Hakkenden (AN122) and magical girl anime such as Magical Emi. His characteristic direction style puts a huge emphasis on setting and atmosphere, lingering on quiet moments - something he truly ironed out in Semishigure, which returns to the protagonist of Magical Emi years after the events of the story. Which made him a perfect fit for Yokohama. kVin is full of praise for the colour design, the strength of the layouts, and especially the soundtrack.
The second OVA Quiet Country Café dir. Tomomi Mochizuki takes a radically different approach, skipping forward in the manga and introducing a boldly experimental style:
Though its color design can’t match the exquisite work of the preceding series, it makes up for it with the radically distinct art direction by the late legend Shichiro Kobayashi—best known for the likes of Utena, Gamba, Ashita no Joe 2, Castle of Cagliostro, Beautiful Dreamers, Windy Tales, and unarguably being one of the most important figures in the history of stylized Japanese animation. In contrast to the grounded scenery of the first OVA, Kobayashi’s evokes reality with stark forms, implications of movement, and downright expressionistic paintings. Compared to the gentle embrace of the first series, his work feels like it’s demanding your attention in a more proactive way.
kVin describes the second episode's direction as characterised by more active and layered camerawork and a more 'involved' score - he's particularly taken with the sequence where Alpha returns to her café after the devastating storm that sets the OVA going. He compares it to Mochizuki's direction of the Ghibli film Ocean Waves.
So two approaches to the same material, two different vibes, but it sounds like both should be very strong. Tonight the plan is simple enough: we'll watch both OVAs back to back! (Apologies for the late start, as mentioned I've been having tech problems.)
AN 163 will be going live shortly at twitch.tv/canmom. Both OVAs are pretty short so we'll be watching from about 11pm to 1am UK time. love to see you there nya~

also do you have any villainess manga recs you have been reading?👀
(rubs my hands mischievously)
My preference for villainess manga is very particular, I mostly enjoy the ojou-sama type more than reencarnations of nice girls!
Okay, first! The shoujo villainess manga!
With One Day Left I'll Break All the Destruction Flags: "Serves You Right!" RTA 24 Hour Record
Alexandra recovers her memories from a previous life 24hours before she's denounced! She learns she's the villainess and only has 24 hours left to fix her future! This was an interesting pick, the protagonist is very interesting and although its very forward in the beginning everything starts to be more complex as the hours pass by.
Also she has rly nice boobs
The One Within the Villainess
Emi, a nice girl, is reincarnated in her favourite character in her VN! The villainess Remilia! Remi however didn't disappear, she existed trapped in her own mind, seeing how Emi lived her life through her body. She came to like her a lot! When Emi is inevitably condemned Remi takes control of her own body once again, the story is about how Remilia takes revenge of everyone that wronged Emi. She even kills various gods, she's amazing.
Some other shoujo mangas that are also interesting!!
The Beloved Daughter of a Crime Family Was Reincarnated as the Daughter of a Gangster in an Otome Game. ~ Highest-Ranking Villain, That Doting is Unnecessary! ~
The Condemned Villainess Goes Back in Time and Aims to Become the Ultimate Villain
Endo and Kobayashi's Live Commentary on the Villainess
(this one had an anime recently!! The girl is a huge tsundere it's cute <3)
Now!!! One of my favourites! Yuri villainess manga!
I'm in Love with the Villainess
(this one will have an anime next season!)
This is everything I want in a villainess manga, OHOHOHO ojou sama tsundere lady with blond hair and ringlets and devoted reincarnated heroine that absolutely loves her! There's also discussions about sexuality, classism and magic tournaments!! their relationship is very cute and i absolutely love them with all my heart <33
The Fed Up Office Lady Wants to Serve the Villainess
This villainess is on the colder side but she's still quite charming!
This one below is on hiatus right now... But the anime comes out soon this year too!
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen Who Will Become the Source of Tragedy Will Devote Herself for the Sake of the People
This one has an interesting setting, it really sit out to me! At first glance it's your typical nice girl villainess manga but with a twist! I really liked it... The found family is strong in this one

Last week was utter hell, with a new class, a new schedule, and my sleep going out of whack. I'm still trying to readjust, and let me explain why I'm mentioning all of this. Almost nothing would have motivated me to get out of my zone and type this post except for Frieren. Frieren is one of my favorite manga series. If you've talked to me about anime/manga before, you would know this. So, ever since it was announced, it has been one of my most anticipated series. To add to that, Keiichirou Saitou was announced as the director. He's a great example of an upcoming new-gen director who has excelled in everything he's been a part of. From the beautiful and abstract EDs he created for The Executioner and Her Way of Life or Boogiepop, to the mesmerizing, dreamlike episodes he directed for Sonny Boy, and the expressive, now very popular Bocchi the Rock. He was a perfect choice as a director for a series like this, and let me tell you, he delivered fully.
Just from a quick glance, you can see how the show looks. Everything is eye-catching, making it almost hard to focus on one particular element because they all just look so good, and no, it's not just the chromatic aberration causing the lack of focus. The various departments responsible for compositing, the background, and the overall color design have done an outstanding job, creating a beautiful and cohesive piece of art. Seeing someone you might consider a less experienced director pulling off such a complete and harmonious experience is incredible. In terms of design, the whole show is aesthetically pleasing. It's not the experimental work you saw in Sonny Boy; it's going in a totally different direction, like a beautiful painting that should be framed on a wall.
It works very well when paired with, you know, how Frieren is as a story. The fantasy world they are in isn't an extremely unique one. You've seen it before; it's fairly typical in that sense. But that's not truly the point. The main focus is showing the day-to-day or year-to-year life of this immortal elf girl, Frieren, and how she views time, how she remembers her past. It's not an incredibly grand adventure, but with the small lens we have on these characters, it feels like a cherished moment, something that should be captured in a photo or painting. It's beautiful in a very simple way. It's not a series made for extremely large moments, I think Frieren has always been focused on a simpler view of life, much like a painting. The smaller details of such a straightforward approach are highlighted so well. The trees in the environment, the squirrels just moving around—there's so much life in each scene. It really all comes together for me like a piece of art.
The consistency lasts through all four episodes, and the staff distribution also seems fairly good, so I expect this to continue throughout the two cours. The pacing itself is perfect. I've really enjoyed how the story has been adapted to animation so far. I believe that nowadays, many anime series have fallen into the pitfalls of adapting things too quickly to capture the interest of newer viewers early on. However, the series composition for Frieren here is excellent.
This writeup might have been shorter than most people were expecting considering how amazing the anime adaptation is and how much I love the source material, but what can really be said about except just praising? I feel like even if you don't like the source material, the anime's execution is almost undeniably good. Additionally, as I said this past week has not been kind to me so my energy is a bit drained, at first I was planning to be more specific in my write up and make points more adhering to the specifics of each episode, but I didn't really have time for that. However, I will do my best to cover every Frieren episode weekly from now on. Make no mistake this is going to be my favorite series from this year.

HELLO I'M BACK WITH MORE CHRONICLE PAMPHLET TRANSLATIONS
Life has been more chaotic than I expected so that is why I've been MIA but Super Live and Chronicle DVD have summoned me to do more translations! This time it's the cast introduction and a small Q&A! First is the Inners + Chibi Moon! Outers and the rest of the cast will be translated at a later date lol
Disclaimer: there might be some errors and/or grammar mistakes. Enjoy!
Sailor Moon/Super Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino
Riko Tanaka
Q: What do you remember of being selected to be part of the Sailor Moon musicals?
When I heard that I was cast as Sailor Moon, it felt really unbelievable. But then due to corona, I had to wait a year before that news could be shared so it didn't feel very real at all. But finally when i went to costume fitting, I really got the feeling that I have become Sailor Moon.
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
Manipulating thunder like Sailor Jupiter, making them feel so much regret that it'll leave them numb lol. Supreme Thunder!!! And I also yearn to fight with huge items like Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn!
Q: A few words about the character you play.
She is clumsy but also strong, energetic, honest and a very hardworking girl. I will always admire her. I'm really happy to play character who is loved by many people! I will do my best for Sera Myu Fes(Chronicle) as well!!
Born 27th of February, Tokyo
Has appeared in commericials since she was 6 years old, such as Pokemon and others. She was won an ACC from her radio commercial Morinaga in-Jelly. She has also appeared in movies and played the role of a heroine's childhood self. She has been more active as an actress since high school and has appeared in many performances, such as ...from the moonlight ~A Delivery from the Moon~ and others.
Sailor Mercury/Ami Mizuno
Kanon Maekawa
Q: What do you remember of being selected to be part of the Sailor Moon musicals?
It was my stage debut so I was very honored. After the final audition, I went home together with Sailor Jupiter, Kisara Matsumura, who I have been good friends with for a while now and she said that "it would be nice if we could perform together."
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
I love pickled plums, so I would be Sailor Vinegar, protected by acid. With my powers of sour stimulus, I would weaken my enemies taste buds.
Q: A few words about the character you play.
Congratulations on the 30th anniversary! Please keep on loving Ami Mizuno and as for Sailor Mercury who I admire so much, i hope you shine forever. I love you!
Born 23th of February, Osaka

Sailor Mars/Rei Hino
Rei Kobayashi
Q: What do you remember of being selected to be part of the Sailor Moon musicals?
From the very beginning i have loved Sailor Mars and my manager knew that I wanted to play her so when the call came that I got the role, we both screamed with excitement. And when I told my mom and grandma about it, both of them started crying tears of joy which made me very happy. Seeing this made me want to work even harder!
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
At first, I'll try to talk to them and get along with them. Maybe I will find the good points in them, there is a high chance that they will change their mind! But if they keep on doing evil deeds, I will give it right back at them, Evil Spirit, Begone!!
Q: A few words about the character you play.
When I was 4 years old I fell with the canny and cool Rei. And when I found out that we had the same name, I felt it was fate. I love the Rei-chan who has a lot of charms, such as the way she hides her passion, the way she says things clearly and honestly, and the fact that she is kind and cares about her friends! Through the Sailor Moon musicals, and by playing Rei, I have met really wonderful and important friends. I'm really grateful. I will cherish each and every performance with love!

Kisara Matsumura
Q: What do you remember of being selected to be part of the Sailor Moon musicals?
When I heard from my agency that I was cast as Sailor Jupiter, I remember being so surprised and full of joy that i couldn't stop trembling. And when we, the 5 Inner Soldiers, finally met face to face, all of them were those who had left a strong impression on me from the auditions. At the beginning, it was. a bit difficult to communicate due to the tension and corona but now everyone has become irreplaceable friends to me!
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
If I fight, I will fight like in my favorite RPG games and defeat evil! In the game, I can become as strong in mind and body as the Sailor Soldiers. I want to collect the strongest characters from all over the world and defeat evil and protect the world! Or course if possible, i would rather discuss and solve the problem without fighting.
Q: A few words about the character you play.
At first I was very nervous and worried if I could properly play such a cool character as Sailor Jupiter. But soon after, I started to admire her, who is by far the most powerful, the most sweetest and kindest of all. I learned to believe in my friends, to protect and love them. I will also continue on loving Sailor Jupiter so that I can get step by step closer to her.

So I was really happy that I was able to become a Sailor Soldier with Rei-chan and everyone else! When I'm with the rest of the 5 Sailor Soldiers, I'm just so happy <3 Unlike Minako-chan, I'm far form being a leader, but since she is, I'll do my best to make everyone to able to rely on me!
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
Special Attack!!; Even though we meet for the first time, it feels like we have met before!! And then we become friends ♪ I call this special attack "Becooome my friend"!

Sailor Chibimoon/Chibiusa
Chise Niitsu
Q: What do you remember of being selected to be part of the Sailor Moon musicals?
When I went to the audition for the first time, it was the winter of my last year in kindergarten, so only 6 years old. That audition was for Chibi Chibi and when I was asked what my special skill is, I remember saying it was doing tricks with a ball and I started doing it lol. I was so happy when I passed was chosen to play Chibi Chibi! And now that i'm 12 years old, I'm really excited to play Chibiusa!
Q: If you ever have to fight villains like Sailor Moon and her friends, what would be your fighting style?
When I'm around town, I take notice of the license plates of the cars and phone numbers written on signboards of different shops and create them into mathematic formulas and solve them! I find it very enjoyable. Even in math class, I feel very accomplished when I understand a difficult problem. I once heard that "mathematics is connected to the mysteries of the universe". Because of that, if I were to fight evil, I would like to fight them with mathematics! I would challenge them by giving them complex figures and formula problems!
Q: A few words about the character you play.
My beloved Chibiusa, who I admire since she is adorable, strong and brave. Like Chibiusa, I will never give up no matter how small I am! With these strong feelings, I want to do my very best in singing, dancing, and acting to play Chibiusa on stage to the fullest!

Sera Myu Music Festival 2022 Blu-Ray
Event was held at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Stellar Ball in Tokyo from November 17th – 20th, 2022.
I missed it by less than two weeks since I wasn't in Japan until December of that year. I doubt I would have stood a chance getting tickets.
Can we also talk about how excited I am to have Japanese Blu-Rays being the same region where I live? Makes it so much easier!!!
Back cover of jacket.
Performance booklet and musical performance dice.
Disc set. The performance on Disc 1. Bonus features on Disc 2. I love how all of them are also huge fans of Sailor Moon. Soundtrack for musical on CD 1. Special performances for the different guests on CD 2.
I haven't see a Sera Myu in a while so a lot of the music was new to me even if it had been out for a few years.
Sailor Moon: Riko Tanaka
Sailor Chibi Moon: Chise Niitsu
Riko Tanaka has a great voice.
Sailor Mercury: Kaon Maekawa
Sailor Mars: Rei Kobayashi
I can't be the only amused that the actress' first name is Rei, right?
Sailor Jupiter: Kisara Matsumura
Sailor Venus: Marin Makino
Sailor Uranus: Shinjyu Terada
Sailor Neptune: Ayana Kinoshita
Sailor Pluto: Chisato Minami
Sailor Saturn: Yuzu Ide
Tuxedo Mask: Riona Tatemichi
Princess Snow Kaguya: Sayaka Okamura
Luna: Yune Sakurai
Human Luna: MARISA
I was fortunate to see Riona Tatemichi perform as part of the America Tour for the Super Live in 2019. I really loved seeing the bonus section with the senshi that were also on tour.
Guest Performances varied by date and time:
November 17 Show 1: Akiko Kosaka, ANZA
November 17 Show 2: Akiko Kosaka, ANZA, Toshino Akamine, Misako Iwana, Emi Kuriyama, Akiko Miyazawa
The original Sera Myu cast performed La Solider on the first night. Loved it!

November 18 Show 2: Shu Shiotsuki, Sayaka Fujioka
November 19 Show 1: Reona Hayashi, Samejima, Yui, Kyoko Ninomiya, Mayuka Ida, Yuko Nakanishi
