History of the World of Navos

Planet Marmund. Many a species live on this ball. The ones we're going to talk about are the Navos. Originating on the eastern side of the continent of Navalos, this humanoid species spread itself far and wide across the many lands of Marmund. One of the first areas found and inhabited by Navos is now known as Ora-Do or, as most know it as, the Crested Region.

Dating is key here. The founding of the city of Ophi is used as a baseline. Every year prior to Ophi's founding is labeled "before settlement" or BES. and every year after is labeled "post settlement" or POS. The oldest city in Ora-Do was Dagim, founded around the year 1000 BES on the east side of the Crested Mountains, named so for their glamorous and angelic peaks. As Dagim grew, travelers would venture out to find more arable land to feed the growing city. In 898 BES, the Fallen Valley, a rift between the Crested Mountains, was found. This allowed access in the more fertile and arable western side of the mountains. In rapid succession, new towns were founded. In the south, Souem, Souop, and Vashar were established between 850 and 700 BES. However, the mighty Ophia River, named after the god of water, cut off Souop and Vashar, leaving Souem to grow on its own. A year after Vashar's founding, Cashom was built as a minor trading post to the south. In the near century that followed, those living on the west side of the mountains, later dubbed "Tavaners"(those who leave), and those who remained on the east side, later dubbed "Remani"(unmoving) began to grow apart in their cultures and religions. In fact, each town had their own unique blend of Tavaner and Reman culture. Dagim remained the largest settlement, already at 100,000 navoks. However, records of Dagim prior to 906 POS remain scarce and hard to find.

After many attempts and failures, the Embe River, named after the daughter of Ophia, was crossed in 600 BES. Shortly after, a village was formed: Emba. After trekking north, Tavaners founded Enda in 590 BES. In 541 BES, after upheavals in Emba and Souem resulted in their ruling masters being killed, refugees fleeing north founded the sanctuary of Crasol. For some time, these settlements were left to grow and prosper on their own. By the time of Sagol Island being discovered in 513 BES, Crasol had a population of 80,000, followed by Souem's 76,000, Emba's 72,000, Enda's 63,000, Souop's 15,000, Vashar's 9,000, and Cashom's 3,000. Three years later, in 510 BES, a major event changed the face of Ora-Do forever.

Dagim, with its mighty population of 569,000 navoks and strong economy, left no room for opportunity for one nav named Golar Gagamite. Not much is known about Golar prior to 510 BES. It is estimated that he was roughly 30 when he traveled to the western side of the Crests with a small army of knights. The first town he came across was Souem. Due to the pacifist nature of its council at that point, Golar took over the town and forcibly enlisted much of its populace into his army. This army went north and conquered the northern 3 towns and the many minor villages that sat between them. After brutally slaughtering any resistance, Golar proclaimed himself "King of the Tavaners". His kingdom became known as "Tavania" or the Crested Kingdom, starting the Royal Period.

Reigning until 472 BES, Golar I, or Golar the Brutal, was succeeded by his roughly 20 year old son, Bechord I. It was Bechord I that centralized the kingdom and united the different towns and villages under the Gagamite House. After Bechord's death in 450 BES, the crown went to:

Mazor I (360-300 BES)

Mazor II (300-293 BES)

Golar III (288-286 BES)

Due to Mazor I and II failing to produce any heirs, the crown went Golar III, grandson of Golar II. Already married to a nava named Mefo and step-father to two navs, Golar III died only 2 years into his reign, ending the House of Golar. The first born son of Mefo, a peasant named Patorsol, seized the throne for himself in 286 BES, beginning the House of Pator.

Patorsol IV (212-210 BES)

The rapid deaths of Patorsol III and IV allowed Mehco, neglected son of Patorsol I, to take the throne.

Patorsol VI (178-165 BES)

Patorsol VI, son of Mecho I and cousin of Patorsol V, was brutal and deeply unpopular. Several knights banded together and overthrew him in 165 BES, the battle that followed resulting in his death. 10 years of violence broke out as different towns and villages vied for the throne. Reko Decom, husband of Patorsol I's wife, Magio, managed to install his son, Mago Reka, to the throne by some clever diplomacy in 155 BES. The House of Reka was firmly established by 150 BES.

After the death of Mago III the Wonderful, a cousin of his, Reka Do I, quickly took over the royal palace and installed himself as king.

Reka Do I (53-31 BES, faux regent from 49-31 BES)

Reka Do II (49-31 BES)

In 49 BES, due to unpopular taxes, he 'abdicated' in favor of his son, Reka Do II, while still remaining in power due to his son's age. After some time of this, both were removed and killed by Mago Reka V, much to the joy of the population.

Mago IV (11-8 BES)

Mago Reka VI (8-6 BES)

Mago V (6-5 BES)

Mago Reka VIII (4-1 BES)

Mago VI (1 BES to 0.S.)

Mago VI, knowing his dynasty to be unpopular even at age 6, had ordered a conquest of Souop, Vashar, Cashom, and their villages. A year later, he christened the new city of Ophi, which he declared to be his capital. Many nobles, most from prior royal houses, didn't want the young Mago to continue his rule. After the king moved into Ophi, these nobles attempted to overthrow him, leading to a centuries long civil war known as the Ophi Chaos where different members of prior and new royal houses declared themselves king. I'll later write down the chaotic list of kings at a later date.

Mago Rex IV, whose reign began in 897 POS, was very quickly becoming unpopular. His house, the House of Meomai, had managed to stabilize the kingdom since 860 POS. However, Mago Rex IV was proving to be distasteful even at age 17. Since the start of the Chaos in 0.S., a republican faction had began to grow within the kingdom. By 905 POS, it was so large that any protests swept aside the police without much effort. Illegal elections saw republican navs elected into council positions within the major cities and towns. Quickly, the councils presented the palace with an ultimatum: step down or face war. Mago Reka IV refused at first, but his guards quickly arrested him and answered the councils' demand. Mago Reka IV was forcibly deposed and lived till 927 POS. The councils met in Ophi where a new document was created called "The Confedaris". In 906 POS, the Crested Confederacy was declared, ending the Ophi Chaos and the larger Royal Period.

* What do you like to do? Write, draw poorly, graphic design (my job, which I mostly enjoy), do taekwondo, run, drink wine, cook, eat, binge watch all the things, snuggle, think about Damien Nazario

* What don’t you like to do? Clean, organize, plan, make phone calls, pay bills, talk to strangers

* Favourite season? Summer. Winters here are just stupid. Fall is just early winter. Spring is just late winter.

* Favourite song? Right now I’m obsessed with “Bad Luck Again” by Rural Alberta Advantage. It’s not my all-time favourite or anything but I generally just obsess about one song at a time and play it to death.

* Favourite colour? I really like bright shades of green but I also dig royal blue and fuchsia pretty hard.

* Favourite book/film? I don’t have all-time faves for either of those but the last book that I got kinda obsessed with and read four times before it had to go back to the library was The Kiss Quotient...it’s friggin’ adorable and features a lovable autistic lady who gets to have a lot of great sex with a Daniel Henney lookalike, so, yeah. Movies...hmm. I don’t watch a lot of movies because they strain my attention span. Oh but I watched Solo recently and that was great! Always been a big Star Wars fan.

* If you could choose one thing about yourself that you love, what is it? I’m jealous of @barbaravalentino‘s answer of loving her lips because I have a tiny anime mouth lol. Hmmm what’s rad about me though...I’m surprisingly physically strong for a small woman and it makes me happy. Getting complimented on it is my favourite thing.

* If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why? I have a hard time imagining living anywhere other than where I am, horrible winter weather and all. I have lived in a couple other countries and while it was a good experience, it was also a relief to get back to Canada. I wouldn’t mind living in BC rather than Alberta but I won’t actually move because my husband and I like being close to our families.

* What is your dream job? Bigshot creative boss lady. Like what I do now but with more staff under me so I don’t have to do the shitty parts that I don’t like (and have more money)

* List three things that make you unique: I’m resistant to living life by the rules...never went to university/college and am doing the entrepreneur thing even though it’s fucking terrifying every day and statistically is a horrible idea. Umm...I’m highly intelligent but not like to a freaky degree, so not that unique I guess, but it’s kind of my defining characteristic. You want three??? Jesus, umm. OK, I have an extremely sensitive sense of taste and smell. Not the coolest superpower, but helps me look cool at a wine tasting. I grew up extremely picky because of it but eventually trained myself to tolerate unpleasant things by just kind of switching off my feelings about it. I think of it like looking at an ugly painting...I know it’s ugly but I can still look at it. So that’s the story of why I can eat like a garbage disposal no matter what garbage you serve me 😅

Leveraging an MBA for career advancement

Hope Sanderson had attended dozens of quarterly review meetings throughout her decade working in Canada’s energy sector—but this one was different. It was 2002 and she remembers listening while TransCanada Pipelines executives delivered corporate financial information, such as price to equity ratios, internal rates of return and investment strategies. Typically, these presentations “went right over my head,” says Sanderson, an Indigenous woman who completed an undergraduate degree in political science with a specialization in Indigenous self-government before diving into the industry. She usually left quarterly meetings with only a general sense of whether the company was doing well or not, but in that meeting, for the first time, it was like a lightbulb went on.

“I sat down and went, ‘Wow! I understand this stuff now!’” she recalls. In that moment, Sanderson knew that her Royal Roads University MBA, which she started in 2001 and would graduate from in 2003, was making a difference.

The program offers a combination of structured online courses and on-campus residences that can be completed in 31 months or an accelerated program in 18 months, with specializations like management consulting and leadership.

The specializations are part of what attracted Ben Chung to Royal Roads. After leaving the non-profit sector and entering the private sector, he realized he was a “pretty small fish in a large pond.” In an effort to set himself apart and better understand “how things work,” he began looking into MBA programs. At the time, he was working with IBM, and his job required a lot of travel, so the remote learning appealed to him—and an international business specialization felt like it would give him an added edge. (Both Sanderson and Chung completed their MBAs while working full time.)

Now a talent acquisition manager with IBM, Chung says that overall, having an MBA sends the message to employers that a candidate has critical thinking skills, more business acumen and potentially the ability to look at issues from a more global perspective.

“To be honest, most MBA programs have similar curriculums, but it’s about the environment and the context in which you learn it, so having a more global approach, having different faculty that have a very different background and also global experiences, that was something that I appreciated,” says Chung, who did the accelerated 18 month program and graduated in 2017. He says that his MBA gave him the confidence and ability to present more effectively in meetings with IBM executives or major clients, both in Canada and around the world.

Chung specifically remembers travelling to Korea and China for his International Business specialization. Speaking with executives there about how they run their businesses and approach the local markets, something clicked for Chung. He realized that up until earning his MBA, his education had been focussed on a North American way of thinking, whereas now, he was learning how to operate a business on an international scale—skills that opened up opportunities, like being selected for an IBM program to do pro-bono consulting in India, which he completed in 2018. “Without the MBA, I don’t think I would’ve been chosen for that,” he says.

For Sanderson, an MBA enabled her to reach her goal of being a better senior leader. “We weren’t an executive MBA, that was one of the things I liked about it, because an EMBA is abbreviated, and I didn’t want to abbreviate my education. I wanted as much as I could get out of it,” she says. Less than four years after graduating from Royal Roads, Sanderson was able to double her salary and noticed a significant difference in her high-level business abilities.

She recalls working as the CEO of the RCMP Foundation. The national charity didn’t have a CFO at the time, so she was responsible for creating, presenting and explaining financial statements to the board, working with auditors if those statements were challenged and doing senior level accounting—similar to the type of financial statements that once went over her head during quarterly meetings earlier in her career. After preparing her first set of board documents for presentation, she realized that without an MBA, she wouldn’t have been able to do that job—or at least do it at the same level. “[An MBA] really enhanced my skillset dramatically, and it opened doors I wouldn’t have otherwise had,” she says.

For Chung, having his MBA has accelerated his career, helping him earn promotions and salary increases more rapidly than some of his peers—a trajectory he also understands from a professional perspective since he works in recruitment. “I can see clearly that if I took a carbon copy of myself without an MBA, I wouldn’t have the same results,” says Chung, now 34.

Now the Senior Director of Indigenous Affairs at Trans Mountain, Sanderson says the MBA program was a catalyst for her career success. “I think a Royal Roads MBA is transformational, I really do.”

Finally I have been able to move past writer’s block to write this seventh part of my blackmadhi series (The Dawn will Come)! This chapter is actually light on Nahyuta and heavy on Rayfa, as Rayfa and Simon bond over some shared experiences. 4470 words.

The dimly lit courthouse was a harsh juxtaposition to the bright sunny outdoors, and as Simon quickly and angrily transitioned from the former to the latter, he couldn’t stop himself from grimacing in pain while his eyes adjusted to his new surroundings. Despite how his vision had momentarily darkened, he kept his feet moving, wanting to put as much distance between himself and that mockery of a court as possible. Vaguely, he thought about stopping and turning around, as Nahyuta would be worried, and would most likely send guards out looking for him if he did not return in a timely manner, but the flashes of memories and the visions of masks prompted him to keep moving his legs.

Sure, he had been able to keep himself grounded enough to finish the trial…though he hated the fact that it was only because Nahyuta was at his side, keeping him tethered to reality. But everything came back to him more and more with every step he took. As he kept replaying what that slimy defendant did – crafty as it was, he would have to admit – he could hear the Phantom’s laugh in his head, consistently getting louder. And when he actually paid attention to the other people crowding the streets looking at him, he could swear that none of them actually had faces.

Before long, he was running.

Somewhere deep down, he still knew he ought to turn around.

He knew he ought to go back to Nahyuta.

Unfortunately, the laughter and the provocative whisperings of a false detective’s voice in his head drowned out those thoughts.

If he just kept moving forward, perhaps he would be able to get away from them.

His running soon became sprinting, and people jumped out of his way before he could barrel into them. Many were clearly afraid; some mothers even clutched onto their young children as Simon went past them. Others whispered to each other, questioning whether or not he was possessed by some feral animal spirit. Gossipy adults wondered how this wild frightening man had become the king-regent’s consort…had he done something to Nahyuta Sahdmadhi to get himself into Nahyuta’s bed?

Simon didn’t care what they said.

Not that he could hear them over the sound of his own shallow breathing and his boots pounding on the pavement.

And of course, he couldn’t hear them over Detective Fulbright.

He wasn’t sure how long he ran for…it was long enough for him to be outside of the center city. In fact, at some point, Simon had detoured off any sort of trails and just ran through some woods and grass. When did that happen? He couldn’t remember…

It was only when he almost ran into water that he finally stopped.

He found himself at a pool with a small waterfall. There were no roads or signs or any sort of indication that people were in the vicinity.

He keeled over a bit at his waist as he fought to catch his breath. When he found himself unable to do so, he ended up dropping down onto the soft grass to lie on his back, stretching his arms over his head. Sweat rolled down his forehead as he struggled to get air back into his lungs. While he wasn’t out of shape by any means, sprinting for that long without realizing exactly what he was doing took a toll on his body. He was so preoccupied with what was happening in his head that he hadn’t noticed until this moment.

It took minutes for his breathing to slightly even out again, and he stared up at the sky with a blank expression on his face. The mist from the waterfall cooled his face a bit; his cheeks were hot and red, and so he found himself thankful for where he ended up.

Though…how exactly was he going to get back?

Simon sat up again, looking for any sort of clues as to where he was or how to get back. Since he had just come from court, he didn’t have his cellphone on his person, and even if he did…he highly doubted that he would receive any sort of signal here. His entire journey was one big blur – he couldn’t remember anything about where he had traveled since the courthouse. His legs had just…worked by themselves as his mind once again conjured up memories and images and sounds that he couldn’t escape from.

Was he ever going to get past this? Would he ever be able to exorcise this particular ghost from his body and soul?

Feeling somewhat defeated, he plopped back down, lying on the cool grass. One arm draped over his eyes to block them from the sun.

Sure, he was doing a little better due to Nahyuta’s influence and presence, but he had to go back home in a few days, and Nahyuta could not follow him there. Even though he knew Athena would wish to help him as well, Simon didn’t want to burden her with his issues. She certainly was doing more work ever since Apollo left – Wright-dono had utilized her even more and Trucy had found herself a new assistant, so Athena didn’t have the free time she once did.

Really, Simon was just frustrated that he wasn’t able to deal with this himself. Even in a courtroom, where he ought to feel most at ease…he believed that he wouldn’t have been able to handle that defendant without Nahyuta’s hand grasping onto his own.

He sighed.

For another length of time – he truly wasn’t sure how many minutes passed – he just stayed there next to the river, feeling the cool drops of water on his face. Simon was just trying to clear his head of everything…something he always found very difficult to do, but…for some reason, it was a tad easier here. Maybe because of how peaceful it was…

“Hey! Panda head!”

Simon wasn’t one to startle easily, but hearing Rayfa’s loud voice cut through this particular air of serenity was enough to make anyone jump. He shot up quickly, moving so that he was back on his feet hastily, as he scanned the surrounding area for the high priestess. She had emerged from the wooded area behind him, holding onto her staff and smirking up at him like she had just caught him doing something he shouldn’t have been doing.

He wondered for a second how he hadn’t heard the jingling of the rings on her staff before.

“Do you always run away from trials like a madman, panda head?”

“Loop head-hime,” he responded, wasting no time in giving her a nickname to parallel the one she had just delivered onto him. “I have to admit, you are not the royal I was expecting to find me.”

“Braid head is most likely looking for you too, but I had a feeling where you would be, so I came to check up on you personally. You should be honored,” she added, still with that insufferable little smirk on her face.

“And how would you know where I would be?”

“First tell me what happened back there. When I first saw you I didn’t pin you as one who would be so easily rattled, you know. Even barbed head was better able to handle his first trials here, and he had death hanging over him,” she added, causing Simon to frown and narrow his eyes.

“I don’t need to tell you anything,” Simon responded, taking a few steps toward her. “Just take me back. We don’t need Nahyuta worrying about both of us being missing.” He almost growled when the young future queen shook her head and slammed her staff on the ground, knowing that he was not about to get what he wanted without a verbal altercation.

“Not until you tell me,” she insisted.

“Fine, I’ll just go on my own.” Simon had begun to move around Rayfa, but the girl put out her staff to block his path. While he could have easily pushed past it, the move intrigued him, and he turned to her with one eyebrow raised. “Don’t want me to get lost, I take it? Why, Rayfa-hime, I didn’t know you cared,” he teased, a sly smile forming on his lips. Rayfa’s cheeks burned scarlet, and when he spoke again, her voice was much louder.

“I don’t care!” She turned her face away. “Not about you, anyway,” she mumbled. “But Nahyuta wouldn’t want you to wander around by yourself.” When Simon’s expression didn’t change, she yelled again. “Wipe that smirk off your face, panda head!”

“I’ll be sure to let Nahyuta know,” Simon said, causing Rayfa to move to hit his head with her staff. However, he blocked it with his arm, and she huffed angrily.

“He knows how I feel! But…but…that’s not the issue here!” She stomped her foot as her eyes narrowed, simultaneously feeling both embarrassed and angry. “The issue is why you freaked out and ran off after a trial, not even bothering to help with any of the procedures after getting your verdict! Do you always pass the work onto others? That’s pretty selfish if you ask me!” By the time she finished, her expression changed again so it was back to that unbearable grin.

“Nahyuta knows why. That’s enough for me,” Simon said dismissively, turning his face away. He heard Rayfa growl.

“Well it isn’t for me. You better tell me or I’ll…I’ll…I’ll ban you from ever coming into Khura’in again once I take the throne!”

“You’d do that to your brother? Keep his consort away from him? That’s harsh, even for you, Rayfa-hime. If you’re going to bluff, at least make it somewhat believable.”

“I will!” She stomped again, and Simon rolled his eyes. What a child she was. “How can I be sure you are any good for my brother if you can’t even do your job without freaking out in the middle of a trial like some sort of little kid? You’re lucky braid head was there, or else the criminal might have been able to twist things more in her favor!”

A nerve was struck, and Simon ground his teeth together. She might have been just a teenager, but her accusations weren’t helping his psyche, which already took one large hit today. His mind was clouded and still dealing with the aftermath of what happened in court, so he forgot who exactly he was speaking with. “You don’t know anything about my hellish experiences, so I suggest you watch your tongue.”

“Or what? You have no power here, panda head. And after that embarrassing display, I doubt a great prosecutor like braid head will want you around him at all! He’ll probably ask me to help get you away from him so he won’t have to deal with your nonsense anymore!”

Something snapped in him – perhaps due to the fear that Nahyuta would want to get away from him – and before he knew what he was saying, Simon responded. “Cruelty comes easy to you, I see. Not surprising, given you are a spoiled child who knows little of true loss and hardship. You would make your aunt proud.”

All color drained from Rayfa’s face, and silence passed between them. At first, Simon considered this a victory – he got her to stop speaking and was able to stop the panicked reaction he could feel coming had she continued. But then…

“How…how…” Rayfa’s voice was quiet for a moment as she turned away for a moment, trying to collect herself. But then suddenly, she snapped back, with tears flowing from her narrowed eyes as she gripped tightly onto her staff for support. “How dare you! You accuse me of knowing nothing about you and then you say that without knowing the first thing about me? You…you nincompoop!”

Simon’s short-lived feeling of satisfaction evaporated instantly after she pointed out his hypocrisy. Plus, he didn’t exactly feel big for making a fourteen year old girl cry. “Rayfa-hime, I-”

“And yeah, I might have not been in prison, or whatever, but…but…how would you like to be lied to for your whole life!” She gasped a few times as she became more hysterical, unable to stop herself from yelling. “My mother – no…my aunt, who was supposed to love me was just using me and didn’t care at all and almost let me die!” The priestess wiped at her eyes, but the tears continued. “I loved her, and I thought she was my mother and I thought she loved me, but she didn’t! She just made me do terrible things and used me to stay in power! And you stand there and say I don’t know things like true loss and hardship? How would you like to be betrayed by someone you love so much and then be told you’re just like them, especially when you’re afraid it’s true?”

After she finished, her words devolved into incoherent sobs as she dropped her staff and buried her face in her hands.

Well…he fucked up royally.

Simon watched her uncomfortably for a few seconds, trying to think of what he could possibly say to her to make this right. How could he have been so stupid as to say something so insensitive to a young girl who, it turns out, was more like him than he originally believed?

He was the cruel one here, not her.

Slowly, Simon knelt down so that he was more eye-level with the crying princess. At first, he made a move to reach out and touch her shoulder, but stopped with his arm basically hovering over it. There’s no way she would want any sort of physical comfort from him right now, given that he was the one to get her to this point. He lowered his hand back down to his side.

“I’m…sorry, Rayfa-hime. That was uncalled for and…wrong. The fact that you care so much for Nahyuta shows that you’re nothing like your aunt.” Regardless of his words, she continued to weep into her palms, turning a little bit more away from him. He sighed a bit – not in irritation or exasperation with her; she had every right to be furious with him and hate him. “I should know better than to say something so grievous…especially since I do understand what it feels like. For someone you care about to betray you like that.”

Finally, she looked at him. It was hesitant, and she was still sniffling, but her eyes were widened a bit. “W-What are you talking about, panda head?”

Simon turned his face away to look at the waterfall. “I…had someone who was very close to me. Or at least I thought he was. He made me feel safe even as I was approaching my execution date…I told him things while I was in prison that I hadn’t said to anyone else, because I trusted him. Things about my fears and hopes…” He swallowed, feeling his throat begin to tighten as the memories resurfaced in his mind. Despite how painful they were, however, he pressed on. He owed her that much. “But…it was all a lie, I soon found out. He wasn’t the person he said he was. Hell, the person he claimed to be was dead all along, and he was using me just as your aunt used you. And…as you loved your aunt…I also loved him. Knowing that still…keeps me up at night.”

Rayfa blinked a few times, causing more tears to fall from her bright green eyes. Simon smiled a little bit; she had the same eye color as her brother. He finally felt comfortable enough to reach out and brush some of her hair from her face, not knowing if the gesture would be met with a slap or a scolding or whatnot. Luckily for him, Rayfa did nothing of the sort, and just fiddled a bit with the bells on her wrists.

“That’s why I ran,” he continued, realizing that she still didn’t want to speak. “I…was reminded of what had happened with him. Sometimes certain things can trigger intense flashbacks and I…panic.” Admitting it out loud to Rayfa hurt Simon’s pride a little bit, but he was in no position to act proud right now. “Your brother has been helping me deal with things, especially with my very frequent nightmares.”

“That’s…why he had you stay in his room?”

Hearing her finally talk again almost caused Simon to let out a large sigh of relief, but he stopped himself. Instead, he just nodded. “Yes. At first, actually, we didn’t get along at all.” He chuckled, recalling their first days working on the case together. “I received plenty of sermons for my less-than-professional behavior. Which, of course, just made me act even less like he had wanted me to.”

A small smile crept on Rayfa’s face. “He does like to hand out sermons a lot, doesn’t he? When will he realize they only backfire?”

“I take it you’ve been on the receiving end of these as well, Rayfa-hime?”

“Constantly. One time I got one just because I took an extra dessert.”

“And?”

“Once he was done I took two more and walked out of the room.”

They both laughed, and then another few lengthy seconds of silence passed between them before Rayfa broke it.

“How…how do you deal with it all?” When Simon responded with a questioning look, she continued, refusing to meet his gaze. “The nightmares and the memories? Knowing that you should hate someone but…you don’t?” She still sometimes accidentally referred to Ga’ran as her mother, and always hated herself for doing so, especially when Amara was the mother who truly cared for her. “It’s…too much.”

“I know,” Simon replied. “I know it is, Rayfa-hime…and truthfully, I’m not sure I do deal with it all. Not well, anyway. I spend far too much time alone, and I try to hide things as best I can, hoping that they’ll just go away. But…they won’t. In isolating myself, I…probably made things worse than they otherwise would be. Nahyuta…has helped me realize that. He’s been a source of strength for me, as he would be for you as well.”

“I don’t want to burden him anymore,” Rayfa mumbled, echoing Simon’s sentiments about not wanting to bother Athena with his issues. They really were more alike than he originally have believed. He shook his head.

“I highly doubt you would ever be considered a burden to him, Rayfa-hime. Your brother is…a very kind and generous person.”

“But he’s done so much for me already. I just want to be able to handle things by myself. I’m to be the queen…I need to be able to do things on my own!”

Her exclamation made Simon pause and think. He knew what it felt like, to want to just deal with trauma without going to anyone else for help. It was a pride thing, partially, but also a source of shame: whenever the nightmares or the flashbacks started, Simon felt weak. Weak and scared and borderline helpless. Showing that side of him to anyone else wasn’t something he was particularly keen on doing, and he imagined that Rayfa felt in a similar manner.

And really, the only reason Nahyuta had seen it was because their hotel didn’t have two separate rooms for them to stay in.

“I know you think that…that you need to be strong. And that you think strength comes from being self-sufficient. I know because I am similar, Rayfa-hime. And perhaps you don’t want to go to anyone because you don’t think others can help. They don’t understand or you feel you shouldn’t be a burden to them, or…” He trailed off for a moment, his voice becoming somewhat quieter. “You don’t want to get close to anyone only for them to hurt you again.” She stared at him, and the vulnerable look in her eyes spurred Simon on. “I know. But…true strength comes from knowing when you need help, and having the courage to swallow your pride and ask for it.”

Despite his newfound conviction, Rayfa appeared somewhat unconvinced, but she was thinking it over. “My…aunt always said I had to do things alone…”

“She was lying, Rayfa-hime.”

She looked away for a moment, biting down on her lip. “So…what if there are times where I don’t want to go to Nahyuta because he is busy or…something? What then? I don’t want to go to mother…my real mother.”

“Well,” Simon said, smiling a little. “You and I are kindred spirits after all. It would be an injustice to leave you out in the cold on your own to freeze, wouldn’t it? I know I’m not your favorite person in the world, but…I do understand your situation better than most others would, I believe. Even though I’m leaving in a few days, I wouldn’t mind you contacting me if you need to.”

“…I would say you jumped up a few spots,” she said, referring to his ranking on her ‘favorite people’ list. “Still not as high as Nahyuta but…you’re closing in on barbed head. …Don’t tell him I said that.”

“Promise,” Simon chuckled, holding out his pinky for her. “As long as you promise not to try and do everything on your own from now on.”

“Only if you agree to the same terms,” she added, grasping onto his pinky with her own. “O-Okay?”

Simon smiled and nodded. “Sure. Who am I to disobey a future queen, anyway?”

They dropped their hands and then Rayfa did something unexpected – she hugged him. It was quick and hard, as if she was afraid going any slower would cause her to change her mind, but once her arms were around Simon’s torso (or as much as they could be, anyway), the prosecutor sighed as a contented expression passed over his face. He put one of his hands on her head and they stayed like that for a few seconds before Rayfa pulled back, her cheeks a furious shade of crimson.

“We should get back before braid head calls in the royal guard to search for us.”

Standing, Simon began to follow Rayfa, who had picked up her staff and straightened up to try and make herself look like she hadn’t just been crying. He followed the priestess, walking slower than normal since his legs were twice as long as hers.

“You know,” he said, as they navigated through the woods, heading back to civilization. “You never told me how you knew I would end up there.”

“That’s a waterfall where spirit mediums train. It has intense spiritual energy and it…draws people who are in distress. So…like I said, I had a feeling. I stumbled upon it first myself when I was upset about something my aunt has said to me when I was younger.”

The remainder of their walk back consisted of stories from Simon’s younger days with Metis and Rayfa talking about her various pets she had gathered throughout the palace. Whenever Simon brought up the science of psychology, he noticed that Rayfa would listen intently, appearing almost fascinated by the concept. Growing up in a highly religious nation with such spiritual power made her look at science as a sort of magic, oddly enough.

She told him some stories about Khura’inese traditions, and he told her stories about some of his cases, being sure to leave out some of the more gruesome details. Rayfa was particularly interested in his courtroom battles against Phoenix Wright, and Simon noted how she would complain about him always messing things up and how truly annoyed he would make her. When he spoke about the time Wright defended an orca whale, Rayfa went on for a good five minutes about how that was “so like him” and how he was always doing things that made no sense whatsoever and how irritating it all was.

So, the princess really did have a deep fondness for the blue attorney.

By the time they made it back to the streets, guards were on them as soon as possible, fussing over them and hurrying them back to the palace. The sun had already started to go down, and they explained that the king-regent had been worried sick.

“Braid head worries over nothing; I had everything under control,” Rayfa said. “Pand…Prosecutor Blackquill here just…needed a guide, so I made sure to find him first.”

Simon arched his eyebrow when she used his actual name rather than his nickname, but she decidedly refused to look up at him. Her ears had turned red though…maybe he would tease her about that later on.

They barely made it to the palace grounds when Nahyuta was rushing to meet them. Apparently, although he had wanted to go out and search for them himself, he was advised not to, as it would be irresponsible for him to leave the palace when Rayfa was still missing, in case of some sort of emergency. He gave his guards until sundown to find them, and if both Simon and Rayfa weren’t back by then, he said, he would go out and find them on his own.

So he was more than relieved to see them.

Even though he wanted nothing more than to embrace both his sister and Simon, Nahyuta stopped in front of them, and held his hands behind his back. He had an audience, after all, and so needed to seem…regal, even in these worrisome situations.

“I’m comforted by your return. Both of you,” he said, looking from one to the other. Strange…they had been found together but the two of them seemed to each be in one piece. He would have expected otherwise given their first less-than-cordial meeting.

“Yes, well…perhaps we should prepare a feast for your and Prosecutor Blackquill’s victory in court today,” Rayfa said, moving past her brother quickly. “I’ll tell the chefs to get started.” Before Nahyuta was able to reply to her, she had run off, and Simon laughed under his breath as he heard the jingling of her staff’s rings fade into the distance.

As people dispersed, Nahyuta led Simon deeper into the palace grounds. Once he felt that he was away enough from public eye, the king-regent stepped in front of Simon and grasped onto his hands, squeezing them and planting a soft kiss to them, as he allowed the worry he felt all day to finally show on his beautiful face.

“How are you doing? What that defendant did…I wasn’t imagining that-”

“I’m alright, Nahyuta.” When Nahyuta responded to him with nothing but a disbelieving look, Simon continued. “I wasn’t, but I am now. Your sister…she will be a fine queen someday, though I’m sure you knew that already.”

“…Just what did you two talk about?”

Simon smiled, before bringing his lips to Nahyuta’s gently.

“You’ll need to ask her that.”
