The Astraeans - part I

if some of this seems familiar, it's because i applied it the elysian lore in faestesch aeternitatem. to start:

What is Astraea?

Astraea isn't a place so much as the name of a society of vampires called Astraeans. As such, it isn't bound to any specific geographical area and these vampires can be found anywhere, though they tend to stick to either cities or forested countryside.

Astraeans enjoy some of the typical vampire powers (and suffer from a few of the typical curses).

Powers

increased strength - an average astraean can easily lift 300 pounds/136 kg without any special training, independent of body composition. as with every average, there are those who can lift much less and those who can lift much more.

increased speed - an average astraean can reach a sprinting speed of up to 22-35 mph/35-40 kmh without any special training and independent of body composition. as with every average, there are those who can run much faster or much slower.

these heightened capabilities also come with increased stamina

heightened senses - in general, their eyesight (especially night vision), sense of smell (as a result, also taste), and hearing are more sensitive. some are also more sensitive to textures but it's less prevalent. the degree of this increased sensitivity varies among individuals-- some have near-human hearing but a stronger sense of smell, some have everything heightened, others have nearly no difference.

ambrose, the main astraean character on this blog, has very sensitive hearing, excellent night vision, and a heightened, but not extremely sensitive, sense of smell

quickened healing - small injuries like slight cuts and bruises, mild concussions, and mild sprains heal within minutes to hours. more serious injuries take longer--a broken bone may take weeks to a month, a large gash will scar (depending on the size, perhaps not as badly as it would on a human). a gunshot wound will scar but the wound will close around the bullet if it's not removed.

astraeans are more resistant to deadly injuries as well, depending on the degree. dropping a building on someone and crushing them into a pancake will have the same effect whether they're human or vampire. a gunshot through the brainstem will be deadly as it is on anyone else; a stake through the heart, same thing. an astraean is more likely to survive being run over by a car or shot/stabbed through a major artery-- essentially, they're more likely to survive injuries that take a long time to kill you.

no aging - speaks for itself. a vampire that is 800 years old will look the same as the day they were turned. this is related to their quick healing.

allure - despite there not being a visible change in a vampire's appearance upon turning, they possess an inexplicable charisma that makes them almost irresistible to weak-minded people. It's useful for hunting and to get their way, less useful if they want to pass unnoticed

Curses

the sun - Astraeans burst into flames under direct sunlight. This is more or less circumvented through the use of runed jewelry (usually rings or necklaces), but the runes need to be refreshed continuously as the sun eats away at the effects of their blood magic

garlic (allicin) allergy - ingesting it is a slow, painful, and certain death, unless it's vomited before a deadly dose can enter the system. getting it into open wounds leads to vicious scarring. depending on the level of the allergy, even getting allicin compounds on intact skin can cause a rash and blisters. many astraeans are deterred by the smell. sadly, allicin is also contained in onions, though in lesser, and therefore more tolerable, amounts

bloodlust - in a pinch, an Astraean can extract some nutrients from normal food. without blood, though, they experience similar symptoms to total starvation: marasmus or kwashiorkor, lethargy, weakness, hair and nails falling out, dry skin. they aren't given the relief of dying of starvation-- an Astraean deprived of blood will become a living, breathing, and agonized husk until they're either fed or put out of their misery

Not applicable

Astraeans are not confined by silver, holy symbols, or running water. They don't need to be invited across a threshold and they're not struck by the compulsion to count scattered objects. They cannot animorph and can't control animals (but they can control people through a combination of their allure and practiced hypnotism).
