“April 2021” Image for the month of April in the new Picture Detroit calendar. "Michigan Central Station (also known as Michigan Central Depot or MCS) was the main intercity passenger rail depot for #Detroit, Michigan. Built for the Michigan Central Railroad, it replaced the original depot in downtown Detroit, which was shuttered after a major fire on December 26, 1913, forcing the still unfinished station into early service. Formally dedicated on January 4, 1914, the station remained open for business until the cessation of Amtrak service on January 6, 1988. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest rail station in the world. The building is located in the Corktown district of Detroit near the Ambassador Bridge, approximately ¾-mile southwest of downtown Detroit. It is located behind Roosevelt Park. The city's Roosevelt Park serves as a grand entryway to the station. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.” [Wikipedia] . . . Years ago, when I was first researching this old train station in Corktown, I had a lot of ideas for what it could end up being. However, despite my love for @ford (as a customer, and employee giving corporate tours for them), I never once envisioned them taking over this mammoth building. I though it would make an awesome hotel, with the railway taking passengers downtown to our convention center on the river... But Ford as custodian of this towering behemoth in #Detroit’s historic Corktown totally makes sense: Henry Ford’s family was from Cork, Ireland and Cork was the second location he built his “modern” assembly line in 1917, the same year that he built the Rouge plant in Dearborn. “January 2021” Built in 1936, The Elwood got its name from the two streets where it was built: Elizabeth & Woodward Avenue. It was designed by architect Charles Noble in the and moved to its current location in 1997, when the Ilitch family started work on Comerica Park. I used to walk past it every day on my way to work at the RenCen (back when it was still owned by Ford) and wish I had photos of it before it was wedged between parking garages.
