played the game ok boomer at my family party today, ended up explaining to a room of ~20 of my relatives what fanfiction is so they could understand the question, “in fanfiction, what does AU stand for?”. and then the card’s definition of “AU” was wrong so i also had to get into the concept of “canon”.

can u believe. in front of my whole family. a room full of people, aged 3 to 80. all staring at me intently as i explain the difference between an alternate universe and canon divergence. at one point my mom was like “daina i think we get it” and a cousin and two aunts were like “wait no we’re interested please continue” and i had to say to my own mother in front of god and my i am kenough sweatshirt “sorry but unlike you the rest of them DON’T have to listen to me talk about fanfiction on the regular”. my uncle is a retired judge. my one cousin worked for the federal government in a job that was so classified that for years he literally couldn’t legally tell us about ANYTHING he was working on. and today those men sat and patiently listened to me define “coffee shop AU”.

also, not one, not two, but THREE of the answers for the young folks, i knew solely because they were either plot points on stranger things or they were things i found out whilst reading stranger things fanfics. and then i was the only person in our age bracket (10 people, ranging from ages 9 to 42) that knew who anne rice was, and had to explain yet again that the reason i had this knowledge was because… fanfic.

it was surreal. also my aunt, aged 68, may or may not begin attempting to read fanfic now because, according to her, “there are so many stories where there are these small side characters and i’d just KILL to hear their backstory or like what was going through their minds during the main action!” i’m very happy for her. today was wild.

Set in the late 60s or early 70s I think - rock star AU in which Ed is basically Elvis, maybe not quite that fucked up but a little bit, touring doing the same songs over and over again, and Stede is a Blackbeard impersonator, the way there's Elvis impersonators, but he's doing it really different (idk how off the top of my head). so Ed has to find out what the fuck is up. also Izzy as being like the Colonel (look it up) is just, oof, and also :chefkiss:

uhhhh so, i’m not super musically inclined - i have no idea about production sounds or anything like that so i’m just gonna go off what i like for whatever reason. I’m also gonna caveat this with the fact that i normally listen to playlists with like one or two songs from different albums rather than whole albums!! i’m also going to exclude because they somehow feel like cheating, ttwii deluxe, elvis on tour & ‘68 comeback legacy edition because combined that’s almost 400 songs and that seems like cheating; even though ttwii & elvis on tour are definitely my most listened to albums; i just love the midnight show recordings & the rehearsals!!!

so (in particular order)

i mean maybe i should say i was discounting live albums but i just can’t so my number one is: Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis

number two: almost in love, even though it’s such a weird little compilation of not even necessarily Elvis’ best songs, it’s easily one of my most-played!!

and thirdly, going with the crowd and agreeing that From Elvis in Memphis is obviously one to be included on this list

honourable mention: Elvis Country (i think i said this was imo the most underrated and i stand by that) & Elvis is Back! because….obviously.

Top Three Time!

The last question about live performances seemed to stump some people. Remember there are no wrong answers! This is just to share our love for Elvis. ❤️❤️❤️

So, this week’s question is…what are your top three Elvis albums? I think I will just pick from studio albums, but feel free to throw in a live album or anything that floats your boat. There are no rules here, just love! 😘

From Elvis in Memphis - Elvis’ voice in 1969 just does something to me - that soulful raspiness is just…I can’t even describe how much I love it. 🥰 In addition to him being on top of his game vocally, the material is also great. There’s a bluesy vibe to some of the songs that I just love. (I’m looking at you, Power of My Love!) I think with this album you really get a sense for the enthusiasm he had coming off of the comeback special and getting to do what he wanted again.

Elvis Is Back - This whole album is just…chef’s kiss. Again, vocally he sounds amazing in 1960, and you get a sense of excitement from this album as well. It sounds like he came back from the army with a renewed sense of confidence in his abilities. And there are some sexy songs on here! Such a Night, Dirty Dirty Feeling, It Feels So Right…🫠

Elvis Country - I kind of surprised myself with this pick, but once it came into my mind, I knew it had to be. I’m generally not big on country music (at least not current country), but Elvis absolutely slays these songs. His voice with some of the material on here (Tomorrow Never Comes, Funny How Time Slips Away, Make the World Go Away, I Really Don’t Want to Know) can bring me to tears. These are just powerhouse vocal performances.
