Ultimate Playlist: Men’s Names, E
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant by Billy Joel Three songs in one, this fan favorite features The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie, popular high school sweethearts who married but had financial troubles and eventually divorced.
Eddie’s Coming Out Tonight by Night Ranger Eddie likes to rock and roll. He lives better than he can afford to, has a crazy girlfriend, has it in for you, and is coming out tonight.
Eddie’s Concubine by Eddie From Ohio Sung by the woman Eddie has an ongoing affair with, the song describes a middle-aged, overweight, sleazy nightclub owner. He keeps promising he’ll leave his wife for her, but never does, so she pulls a gun on him.
The Ballad of Eddie Praeger by Paul and Storm An Irish epic in the style of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald about a drunk in a pub bathroom who does battle with a urinal cake.
My Baby’s In Love With Eddie Vedder by “Weird Al” Yankovic The singer is jealous because his girl is infatuated with the lead singer of Pearl Jam.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot Another epic ballad, this one chronicles the tragic, final voyage of the bulk carrier SS Edmund Fitzgerald, named after the president and chairman of the board of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the company that contracted Great Lakes Engineering Works to design and build the longest ship on the Great Lakes.
Elijah’s Song by Neil Diamond A lullaby for his grandson, the song references Neil’s son Jessie, who has his own music career, and Elijah’s mother, actress Sheryl Lee,.
Saint Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) by Joh Par This song is the main theme from the 1985 film by the same name. Saint Elmo’s Bar is where the characters in the movie hang out, but Saint Elmo’s Fire is a weather phenomenon where a corona discharge from a ship’s mast creates luminous plasma, resulting in a blue or violet glow. This effect is named after St. Erasmus of Formia (also known as St. Elmo), the patron saint of sailors.
Elvis is Everywhere by Mojo Nixon This psychobilly song deifies Elvis Presley while labeling Michael J. Fox as the Anti-Elvis. Elvis is the one who built the pyramids and stonehenge, and he’s taking boats from the Bermuda Triangle.
Velvet Elvis by “Weird Al” Yankovic A style parody of The Police, this song glorifies the tacky art trend as much as it does the singer.
Sincerely, Me by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul This is the song from which the 2015 musical Dear Evan Hansen takes its name. The main character, Evan, creates a series of fake emails in an attempt to convince Connor Murphy’s parents that he and Connor had been friends before Connor committed suicide.
Dr. Evil by They Might Be Giants Written for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. When your name is Evil, that is good, or so you think, but you’re so very wrong.

Remembering great work: Andy Warhol revived through Denny Ja's hand
Andy Warhol is a visual and painter artist who is famous for paintings with the theme of pop art. Through his work, Warhol has had a big impact on the world of modern art. Although Warhol died in 1987, his works are still always a source of inspiration for artists. Denny JA, a visual artist from Indonesia, managed to revive Andy Warhol's works through his creativity and expertise. Warhol's works that are usually found in the form of paintings in museums or art galleries, are now made into three-dimensional forms that can be enjoyed directly by the audience. In recent years, Denny JA has created several works of art inspired by Warhol, such as the statue of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. The statues are made using ceramic tile material, making it possible to be displayed outdoors. In addition, Denny JA also produces various kinds of accessories, such as necklaces, bracelets, and hats with Warhol -style pop art motifs. These accessories are limited edition, so it is very exclusive and rare. Because of Denny Ja's expertise in reviving Warhol's works, many museums and art galleries have asked Denny Ja's works to be exhibited there. These exhibitions also attracted the attention of many visitors, including from artists and art collectors. In addition, Denny Ja also gave a workshop and seminar on Warhol and his artwork to the general public. Through this activity, Denny Ja introduced pop art and inspired many people to try to make their own art. Denny Ja's performance has shown that his creativity and art skills can have a big influence on the world of modern art. By reviving Andy Warhol's great work through Denny Ja's hands, the artwork was again known by the community and became relevant again in the context of modern art. Warhol's works that have been painted and immortalized in the form of paintings can now be enjoyed in the form of a larger and more real sculpture. This provides a different experience for art lovers, and makes Warhol's works again known in new and fresh forms. Denny Ja in this case plays an important role as a carrier of Warhol's work into a more tangible world, where the statues and accessories produced by him can be enjoyed by the wider community. In another sense, Denny Ja is an artist who succeeded in bringing Warhol's work to a level closer to the community, so that the artwork can gain wider popularity. In an effort to promote Warhol's work through Denny Ja's works, a book has been published about Denny Ja and his artwork. The book explained about Denny Ja's works and inspiration from Warhol's works. The book also explained how Denny Ja succeeded in reviving Warhol's work using new techniques and materials. In conclusion, Denny Ja has succeeded in reviving Andy Warhol's great work through his extraordinary skills and creativity. Through the form of sculpture and accessories, Warhol's works can be enjoyed by the general public in the real world. Denny Ja also succeeded in introducing Pop Art and Warhol art to the public through workshops and seminars. Denny Ja's works provide a new point of view of Warhol's works, and bring broader popularity to the world of modern art.

Documenting 2: Visual Research
Tumblr media
Martin Parr
Martin Parr is an English documentary photographer who is best known for his photography of the tradition of the Great British Holiday. He is probably my favourite photographer in the world, as I love how honestly and candidly he captures life. He has had around 40 solo photobooks published, and has featured in around 80 exhibitions worldwide. When asked about the art of documenting people through photography, and the ethics involved, he said the following:
“I think that all photography involving people has an element of exploitation, and therefore I am no exception. However it would be a very sad world if photographers were not allowed to photograph in public places. I often think of what I photograph as a soap opera where I am waiting for the right cast to fall into place. In more recent years I have photographed much closer where bits of people and food become part of the big picture, and one advantage of this is that it means people are less recognisable.”
Tumblr media
Tish Murtha
Tish Murtha was a Northern English documentary photographer who took black and white photos to create a record of youth unemployment, juvenile jazz bands, kids in Elswick in South Shields, and a series of photos of London by night. Her work is very striking and raw, the black and white photography really adds a sort of grit and solemness to her photographs.
Tumblr media
Francesco Faraci
Faraci is a Sicillian street photographer. I think his work is really beautiful and raw, and much like a contemporary version of Tish Murtha’s work.
Tumblr media
Jason Florio
Jason Florio is an English documentary photographer. This photoseries is called Destination Europe, and it shows the journey of refugees from Libya to Europe. He has done several documentation projects all around the world, and Destination Europe was one that won him a Magnum Photography Award in 2017. These photos are seriously effecting - they are beautiful and devastating, and tell a story brilliantly. This is documentary photography with a real purpose and meaning. These photos are heartbreaking.

Keir Edmonds
“Berlin-based English urban sketching artist Keir Edmonds keeps a visual diary that illustrates his life as an expat in Germany’s capital. Believing that “you have to put in 10,000 hours to get really good at something,” the self-confessed “Englishman lost in Berlin” carries a sketchbook and pen everywhere he goes. From local architecture to summertime canals and graffiti-covered streets, his growing portfolio captures the undeniable charm of the city.
Edmonds started keeping sketchbook journals in 2015 with the goal to improve his skills in observational drawing.”
Tumblr media
Sam Winston
Sam Winston is an artist based in London, who says his “practice is concerned with language not only as a carrier of messages but also as a visual form in and of itself”. He is known for his typography and his abstract illustration, having worked with some of the biggest art galleries in the world.
These images are from a project he undertook called 7 days - “a long durational studio work where the artist lived without sight for seven days and nights. Repeatedly transcribing five sentences the image created is without any visual reference.”
Sam says, “The idea of going ‘under’ or without images fascinated me. I had read of yogis spending years in complete darkness and psychologists running light deprivation studies but for me the question was - what landscapes are available to the artist when they are only given an internal view for seven days?
Biologically speaking the absence of daylight triggers large hormone imbalances in the pineal glad located in the centre of the brain. This gland normally releases melatonin which is the hormone that regulates sleep - and with this out of balance - you will quickly find yourself operating outside of conventional time.”
This method of abstract documentation is something I find very intriguing. As a designer, you have information input into you and it is your job to translate this meaningfully into the world. If we restrict our outputs and inputs, and put ourselves under strictor creative parameters, then as creatives we we surely find a way to make great work through the power of thinking ourelves out of those restrictions.
Tumblr media
1. ‘A durational work where a pencil line records the length of every exhalation. The length of each line marks the length of time it takes to exhale. These marks were recorded over a 15 hour day without break. “The premise is deceptively simple - marking either an exhalation or inhalation with a pencil line - the length of the duration of a breath. Yet the cumulative effect of this action is a map that reveals a unique bridge between our unconscious and conscious functioning. It is also a refocusing of attention to our dependent relationship within the aerobic world.”
2. ‘An on going series of collages looking a various components of drawing. Each image contains one complete pencil.“This is the beginnings of a process looking at the materiality of the objects that inform artistic practice.  By literally exploding, dissolving and collaging broken down artists tools we reveal their history and legacy. Whether the pencil graphite is from mines in China or the New Mexican cotton farms that make rag made paper - each artwork is a testimony to a globalized economy and the unseen geography of the tools by which we make art. “‘
3. ‘Birth day is an project that charts the 183,600 lives that come into being on the planet over a period of 12 hours. The participants draw circles to remember loved ones and also register their names in writing. In this way the public are asked to connect their own personal narrative to the much broader theme of population growth and decline.“By the time you’ve read this sentence three people have been born into the world. From observing this process I have noticed that the moment a person draws a circle (and it has a name) the artwork stops being about statistics and becomes a wall of brothers, sisters, mothers etc - in this particular case representing 260,000 lives that are born and die in 12 hours.”’
Tumblr media
The text of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was read and categorised into three emotional states – passion, rage & solace. Once theses these three categories of text were typeset & printed they became the material for three the hand cut collages. The final work is the combined print of the typeset category and the hand cut collage.

Nathalie Miebach
Boston-based conceptual artist Nathalie Miebach weaves colorful, complex sculptures using rope, wood, paper, fibers, and data from weather events. Two of the artist’s recent series explore the impact of storm waters on our lives and on marine ecosystems, with variables like wind and temperature (and the harmony of the composition) often informing the rainbow of colors used to translate the data into a three-dimensional structure.

Priscilla Coleman
Priscilla Coleman is a courtroom illustrator. This is a dying art and in the UK there are only four official courtroom illustrators left. “It’s as if you’re memorising for a test,” she tells It’s Nice That. “You forget the details so you have to write something that will trigger your memory. Once I had to draw a line of airline hijackers, and they all had black hair but different hairstyles. One had long sideburns so I wrote Elvis, one was skinny so I wrote ‘skeleton man’, for others I wrote ‘potato nose’ or ‘fried hair’ or for another, I wrote the name of an ex-boyfriend he reminded me of! People’s faces are fascinating.”

Scott Elmquist
This man is a very inspiring documentary photographer. The last image above is an extremely powerful photograph to me. It shows black youth playing basketball under the defaced statue of a coloniser. Amazing. Above that is part of his Americana documentary photography series, capturing rural midwestern America and it’s communities.

This November, the Whitney Museum of American Art offers a major reassessment with “Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again,” the first American retrospective of the artist in nearly 30 years. Featuring more than 350 works of art, ranging from paintings Warhol did in his childhood living room in Pittsburgh to his notorious films of the 1960s to his late-career collaborations with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, the exhibition will later travel to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
One of its most groundbreaking aspects will be the concentration on the least-known time of Warhol’s life, the 1950s. During his first decade in New York, he was a young commercial artist and an openly gay man, trying to turn himself into a fine artist. The Whitney show brings together about 70 Warhol works from that period: elegant drawings of shoes for advertising campaigns, ballpoint pen drawings of men in drag, fey illustrated books that he printed privately for friends, male nudes in gold leaf, a sketchbook of men’s torsos. The assumption has been that Warhol’s career as a serious artist began in the summer of 1962, with Irving Blum’s famous exhibition at the Ferus Gallery, in Los Angeles, of 32 soup cans, but the Whitney show allows the earlier paintings, drawings, and commercial work to be seen in a new context. “This early period was critical for Warhol,” says Neil Printz, the editor of the artist’s catalogue raisonné. “It was instrumental and utterly productive.” Blake Gopnik, who has spent years researching a biography of the artist, to be published next fall, believes that past discussions of the period, especially in the context of the hyper-conservative McCarthy era, have been off base. “What truly matters about Warhol’s 1950s drawings is the brazenly gay content they carry,” Gopnik says. “The very banality of their style lets them function as a transparent carrier, you could say, for their queer themes.”
Warhol arrived in New York in the summer of 1949, when he was just 21 years old. On his second day in the city, he approached Tina Fredericks, the well-known art director of Glamour magazine, who told him that she was looking for drawings of shoes and that she needed them the next morning. She hired Warhol on the spot; his first illustrations appeared in the magazine’s September issue, depicting five red pumps ascending the ladder of success. His rise as a commercial artist was meteoric. He regularly illustrated articles for Glamour, Seventeen, and Mademoiselle, and drew album covers for Columbia records. By 1955, he was the sole illustrator for the prestigious ads for I. Miller & Sons shoes, which appeared on the society pages of The New York Times. By the mid-’50s, particularly in the New York fashion world, Warhol had arrived. As a New Year’s gift in 1957, he sent Diana Vreeland, who was at the time the fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar, a small book of 18 delicately colored lithographs, 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy. “How much I appreciate the book I have on my desk of the delicious cats,” Vreeland wrote Warhol. “Your drawings are so charming.”
Tumblr media
At the same time that he was making elegant, whimsical drawings of smiling perfume bottles for magazines, Warhol was exploring more personal work, such as sexy portraits of tattooed sailors and fanciful drawings of gold slippers that he named after such iconic figures as Mae West and Zsa Zsa Gabor. But his first attempts to move into the realm of fine art were not successful. In the mid-1950s, Warhol was commissioned for the first time by the department store Bonwit Teller to create displays for its windows on Fifth Avenue. His installation appeared next to that of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, artists just as unknown as Warhol, who worked together under the pseudonym of Matson Jones. Hoping that the visibility would lead to important gallery exhibitions, Warhol used a photograph of a man in drag posed as a fashion model. Even other gay artists were horrified. As Warhol later recalled, “Bob and Jasper came and looked at what I was doing and laughed at me. They pointed their fingers and laughed—they were so mean.” As De Salvo, who met Warhol in the mid-’80s and has become one of the leading experts on his early work, characterizes the incident: “Andy was too swish and chichi for Bob and Jasper.”
Considering that homosexuality was against the law in the U.S. in the 1950s, and certainly not accepted in the New York art world, Warhol was remarkably open about being gay (an essay in the Whitney catalog about those years is cheekily titled, “Picture Portraits: Miss Warhol Knows What the Client Wants”). “Being gay was absolutely vital to who Warhol was in 1950s New York, to how he was seen—both for better and worse—and to the art he made,” Gopnik points out. “All his attempts at making serious art in that era involved imagery that still reads as gay to us and screamed it in the 1950s. That made his art highly appreciated in the gay world around Warhol and almost intolerable, and mostly incomprehensible, to mainstream straights.” The subjects of Warhol’s drawings were often men in drag. He did not hesitate to depict two men kissing or, it is said, to ask nearly any man he met if he could draw his cock. His first exhibition of art, in 1952 for the openly gay Alexander Iolas at the Hugo Gallery, in New York, was called “Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote.” “An air of carefully studied perversity,” a leading art critic deemed it.
Tumblr media
Although there is overt homoeroticism in much of Warhol’s personal art in the ’50s, later in the decade it is often disguised. “It is the beginning of seeing how Warhol, as the years go on, and his style emerges into the Pop art that we know, has this layered language,” De Salvo explains. “Marilyn Monroe can be read multiple ways. Elvis Presley can be read multiple ways. And the early Popeye, Superman, and Dick Tracy paintings—it is interesting that he focuses on these archetypes, all of these straight, powerful guys. Everything has multiple meanings, and this notion of his sexuality—of gay sexuality—continues to be coded, obscured, but it’s there, depending on who is reading it.”
Tumblr media
Male Nude, circa 1957, is typical of a time when Warhol would routinely ask men if he could draw their private parts.
© The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS) New York.
With the Warhol show taking over nearly three floors at the Whitney, making it the largest devoted to a single artist in the new downtown building, which opened in 2015, De Salvo believes that this more complete picture will deepen the understanding of his development into one of the most important postwar artists, particularly for those yet to be convinced of Warhol’s seriousness as an artist. It’s a big Warhol moment: In addition to the Whitney show, the Dia Art Foundation will present Warhol’s Shadows, 1978–1979, a monumental painting in multiple parts, at the Calvin Kleinheadquarters in New York, through December 15. “There are the naysayers who really hate Warhol, who saw him as someone who introduced a crass commercialism, who blurred the line between art and commerce,” De Salvo says. “I think he was making an honest statement about the nature of the United States, which is now true in a way it could not have been imagined in the 1960s. I can’t convince the people who do not want to be convinced, and that’s fine. He’s a provocative figure—he provoked.”

2020-09-21 - 16:00-18:00 (partial clip show)
This episode was a combination of older clips, and a new segment featuring an interview with the group Osyron and some of their music. I had intended to present an entirely new program with a different set of songs, but life had other plans. This is what what was available under the circumstances. Watch for a new episode next week.

It's located a number of doors below the Ingleside Inn and additionally both are had by the precise very same firm.

Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run (an autobiography)
This is going to be more exorcism than exegesis – this book is odd, and I can’t stop thinking about why. The review line here is that this recent Springsteen autobiography is worthwhile enough if you are somewhere north of a casual Springsteen fan but if you are looking for a single Springsteen historical document, you’d be better served with the Dave Marsh biographies.  Superfans will of course love it, the curious will find it entertaining if they wind up with a copy, and the odd people like me who are obsessives without being real superfans will, well, find it peculiar but involving.
Bona fides: I’m an obsessive in that I’ve listened to every Springsteen song, legally released or leaked, up to 2006-ish, have read many of related books, filtered through ephemera, had the concert experience numerous times at different stages of his carrier, and have intermittent year long bouts of compulsively listening/getting moved/thinking about the whole Springsteen enchilada.  What really attracted me to him as an artist was that, unlike chameleons such as (Bruce fan) Bowie who committed to one thing at a time, he seemed to carry a bunch of different influences simultaneously, the skills of which he was proficient in, and would combine and project them - the arena rawker, the street party leader, the acoustic poet, the rock and roll revivalist, the RnB review, the storyteller, the piano balladeer - often capturing several in the space of a song. He also had such great phenomenological and artist-as-story interest: I had seen this with Elvis, but this was more complicated and comprised the sum of on stage relationships, story content, song preoccupations, personal life leaks, and attitude towards fans coalescing into a legend of an avatar of the American working class and underclass, coming in with a bunch of buddies who together were a family, to redeem something in the American spirit, all on the shoulders of some incredible will and discipline.
So why am I exiled like Moses, able to see the super fan promised land but never enter? First (and this is not restricted to Springsteen) I find the fan ethos offputting.  It combines a deification I loathe with a fake chumminess that makes me nauseated.  More importantly, though, I really don’t like much he has produced since Tunnel of Love marked his most significant career transition.  I note only one great song (“Terry’s Song”) written since the Chimes of Freedom EP which marked the end of the ToL tour, his first marriage, and the initial E Street Band run.  This includes a take it or leave it attitude towards current concerts on my part (the spark isn’t there for me) and wariness about where the Springsteen “story” has gone. One of the greatest things about him early on was the mastery of basically every corner of rock and roll, and his attempt to incorporate new elements and stay fresh are kind of embarrassing (I like Rage Against the Machine too, but the weak link there is Tom Morello’s guitar, and Springsteen hired him to “rejuvenate his sound”.  Ugh).
So, why is it weird? I don’t read many autobiographies (only one I can remember finishing is No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish) so maybe it’s par for the course, but this isn’t a sculpted recounting of history but a chain of 80 or so “stories” like extended versions of the ones he would tell on stage, and are concerned more with internal rhythm than an external sense of pace or continuity.   There is a lot of backtracking where the reader needs to “match” events. This story approach extends to frequent use of his stage voice(s), where he will go into revival preacher or beat poet mode, do stream of consciousness riffs, and recount back and forth embellished dialogue (without quotes, but with interjections like ‘Marone!’) like he is arguing with himself.  The good news is you can truly hear his voice in the semi-poetic prose. The bad news is it doesn’t flow well, leaves strange things out, cuts back and forth, and the story seems incomplete.
The best thing about the book is an authentic third angle on the Springsteen legend that I legit had never heard before.  The Springsteen myth is heavily curated by the Boss himself and has always painted a picture, as I noted above, of a rock’n’roll family bringing a fun redemption to the world. This had to be resolved with journalistic and tabloid information that challenged the story, but there was always a fan synthesis that incorporated the info and left the godhead intact.  My memory of rec.arts.music.springsteen (one such recounting was called “a good man,” gagh!) is that Juliana Philips was seen as “a mistake of exposure to big success” and “a vain actress,” and he soon realized that what he needed was a good Jersey girl (which resolves how the marriage never fit fan image of him and sands the edges off of the inconvenient timing of the affair). Springsteen’s recounting of this is a good example of the value of his non-filtered point of view.  He goes out of his way to demonstrate the small town authenticity of Phillips and describe her as wonderful and loving.  The problem was that he was impossible to get along with for anyone after a couple of years and his mishandling of the separation (not wanting the press to know while he began another relationship and got caught) is the biggest regret of his life (because of how it impacted his then-wife).
This approach reveals him as a hard guy to know.  He describes himself as a narcissist and self-hater (cue Venn diagram of the overlap of narcissism and self-doubt being Art), and he tells story after story of the men in his life where he lengthily but gently drags them through the mud, then says “but we would die for each other and I love him.” These stories come off as whatever happens to passive aggressiveness after expensive therapy (and this book is therapy-speak rich), and often serves to make him look worse than outside data does (the Mike Appel story especially where Springsteen was utterly in the right and was maliciously kept from recording for several years, but here Springsteen does everything to make excuses for him, gives him a butload of credit, and still manages to come off a little petty, i.e. these stories tend to backfire).  He spends a lot of time recounting how he told the bandmembers that they just had to understand that he needed all the control and that he had all the power, so they needed to suck it up.
The upbringing stuff is probably the best material and the most untrod ground. His family history is pretty compelling and I finally understand how his religious and ethnic background shaped his personality.  The sex stuff makes him look idiosyncratic and selfish: a monk sometimes, do anything that moves one year, but usually a serial monogamist with uncondoned cheating.   He comes off like a terrible boyfriend and worse husband (lots of lost weekend stuff), but this doesn’t really capture how odd the sex stuff is as much as that one passage about he and his dad went to Tijuana and he came back with the crabs.  He mentions prostitutes more times than he mentions groupies.
He picks several concerts to elevate to most important status that are not big ones in Springsteeen lore, but have some kind of multicultural underpinning.  To at least some extent, this is to craft a version of a guy who is in touch with human experience. He spends so much time on post Katrina, 9-11, and his hurt at the cops rejecting him after what he thought was the evenhanded “American Skin (41 Shots)” (the fact that he was surprised surprises me).  His talk about race and Clarence Clemons is fascinating – their relationship was molded on stage because he thought it was an important one to America both as an example and as an aesthetic statement.  They only knew each other in this context and rarely ever saw each other outside of stage and studio.  So their friendship, such as it was, was a Springsteen story performed into existence.  He is very conscious of (and calculated about) his cultural legacy.
So much is left out, yet there are a lot of stories that are barely OK, but seem there specifically to mark time so that it’s not Born in the USA cut-to everybody starts dying (thinking of the horse riding stuff as an example). His discussion of his depression is very valuable, but asynchronously told and thus hard to follow.  The book is full of “aw shucks” enthusiasm, idiom, and showmanship, but is somehow unexpectedly unguarded about the inner workings of his mind. He comes off as someone driven and not comfortable in his own skin unless he is accomplishing something, but in a human, actually painful way, that I have only ever seen divulged by a celebrity once before (David Foster Wallace).  I had an idea of Springsteen as reasonably well adjusted, but after this if he commits suicide I would not be surprised.
In the end, the book crystalizes in a new set for meanings of that old story of him ripping down the posters saying “the future of rock and roll” at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, 1975 – Springsteen is a control freak, most of all about what people think of him, crippled by self-doubt, with the constant need do something, anything, to reassert mastery over his art, his message, and his mind.  That this is at odds with the book’s willingness to go deep and spill stuff he would usually keep close and it is this tension (along with its storyteller-quilted nature) gives it its strange charge.  In the end, there is a grandiose humility that keeps it together and I’m glad I read it.

So when Axxxxx found out she was pregnant when we were in Fairbanks in Alaska we got a pregnancy app to chart the baby’s progress.
The baby was due two weeks ago.
I knew the date was coming up and it’s depressing to think about on multiple levels. Remind me to talk about it.
—-
Was supposed to hang with Cxxxxxxx tonite but Kxxxx actually wants to see me and was asking me about it so, I’m gonna have to get out of it with her.
Cxxxxxxxx hit me up on Facebook messenger asking if I still wanted to hang. I haven’t responded yet.

Ive been to this Starbucks so many times that the guy Josh, calls me by my name when he sees me in the camera, and knows my drink here.
I don’t know what to think about that.
It speaks something about my habits of course. In a sense I was happy to hear my name and my drink, but it’s like goddam, is this my life?
I need to remind myself not to be the old server.
Still need to tell Cxxxxxxxx I need to take a rain check

I can’t remember what I wanted to be when I grew up; it doesn’t matter because I’m not whatever it was.

Plugging along on the I-4 westbound. Something up the way is really holding up the traffic. Luckily I have my music.
Aaron Tobin called me to let me know his (and our to an extent) boy Todd, died of a massive heart attack. He was Tobins age, 39 maybe 40.
To be fair this guy was huge his whole life and also on drugs. He had he heart attack in jail from what I understand. He turned himself in for a warrant he had going.
Wild shit. Living long enough for people to be dying around us

Jeff Rosenstock tonite. I finagled three tickets from a friend online, for me and Danielito and Kristy, but unfortunately they can’t make it.
So I’m going solo. Asked a couple girls on the roster but no luck so far. And it’s that time. So I’ll be forging on alone.
Gotta get earplugs.

Monday. I’m off. Had plans with Mxxxx in the morning but she’s taken ill.
I tentatively have plans with Kxxxx tonite, which I need to attempt to solidify tonite. Ok, the text has been sent: “hangs tonite?”
Easy enough.
She already asked about Monday on Sunday morning after Saturday night hangs and bangs.
Waiting on her response. Listening to Mary Hopkin. This shit is my new shit, which is old shit like back in 1969. Produced by Paul McCartney is definitely why I like it.
—-
Of course this is all happening at my storage space. This is where I hang currently. Since I’ve been back to Orlando. I hang here with my shit and wrote and do art and catalogue and attempt to trim down and move shit around to maximize the space.
So back to the Kxxxx thing, she’s ill too. Everyone is sick for some reason. I’ve always been a carrier, rarely getting ill myself.
Had a conversation with Cxxxxxxxx. She was upset about a week ago when she perceived me to be placing blame on her when she couldn’t hang out spur of the moment.
So I waited almost a week and she didn’t text or message me once.
So I wrote her. She’s pretty much embittered by a lot of previous bull shit that other people have heaped on to the pile.
Now I suffer for the sins of the last person.
To be fair she was super in to me when we met and I sort of nipped the ‘let’s hop into a relationship immediately after she gets out of one’ enthusiasm in the bud.
So, she seems to be indifferent to me, and more broadly, people in general. Hard to say.
I don’t really need to put that much emotional energy into it, as I have other more interested coals in the fire.
But she’s grown on me. So there’s that.
I’m not trying to abandon any of the women I get involved with.
Do I want to commit to any of them fully? At present, no.
And naturally I think of Axxxxx. Always her. She blew my hair back. I blew it with her.

There’s a cute Hispanic girl in this Denny’s right now, sitting alone and watching Futurama. I keep glancing over there to watch.
Also the girl who just came in for her shift at 11:00 has just left hurriedly in tears. I have no damn clue what the hell happened.

Cold and wet all day today. Truly a day where it rained all day.
Spent the night at Kxxxx’s house. Who’s Kxxxx you ask? She is from the internet dating app OkCupid. I broke one of my own rules and slept over there. And this was last night, which was also the first night i met her in  person and also the first time we had sex.
I say the first time assuming there will be more times. She and I definitely get along. It’s weird because she reminds me of Holly D in several ways.
First off Kxxxx body is kind of shaped like Holly’s. She’s taller than I am. Big tits and ass. Back tattoo from what I could gather

I do everything high these days. I’m here at Orlando you and comic con hittin the pen hard. Already smoked before I left the house.
This con is good because it’s smaller and I can make trips back to the car to bring back stuffs I’ve gotten. So I don’t have to roll around with a backpack.

Been on the pen/flower pretty solid since October when I got back from Alaska. Hell, even Alaska I was on the wax daily.
I guess I’ve been medicating myself.
Working on a sketch. I missed a couple days but I did one last night also:
Ok and here’s today’s:
I’m trying to find my groove with what I want to do with all these sketches. Basically I’m just sketching shit I see.
Sketching? Drawing? I don’t even know what to say here haha.
And I made another

Going to see Neil DeGrasse Tyson tonite. This will be the third time I’ll have seen him.
I was hoping Axxxxx would be in the mix at this point because she was with me the first two times. Now, if I hadn’t have fucked up recently, she probably would be with me tonite. Goddammit me. So, my one and only boy Tobin is gonna come with me.
It’ll be nice because we haven’t seen each other in a hot minute. Ever since he got that girlfriend of his haha. Now they are in that ‘up each other’s ass’ phase.
Update: it would seem Neil will not be speaking tonite after all. Amidst recent allegations in the last few months, he postponed/canceled his shows: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2018/12/13/neil-degrasse-tyson-cancels-orlando-appearance-following-sexual-misconduct-accusations%3fmedia=AMP%2bHTML
So that is sad fucking news, especially since I’m finding out today and not a month and a half ago. I mean I knew about the allegations but didn’t think it would come to this.
Another thing that chapped me is that Aaron Tobin fucking bailed on me before I found this out. Granted I only asked him yesterday but damn he seems to let me down a lot when there’s a specific date and time involved.

I put my paper money and coin collection in these plastic inserts
Now the only thing that blows about these inserts is that the tops don’t seal, so this shit has to be flat or upright at all times. This isn’t too bad for the paper money but clearly there could be an issue for the coins.  I later got a three ring binder to stick the inserts in.
Also I took pics of all the packages received today. Mostly records.

I went a million places today. The altamonte mall. Starbucks. These two were part of a date with Mxxxx, who I really enjoyed hanging with. She is married and its all legit. Like they both see other people and shit. So this could be good for me.
Then did the white girl tour to tj maxx and Ross. Also before that early in the afternoon after Mxxxx I went to bright light books.
Went a little overboard on buying shit today. Oops.

The girl who works here only a couple days a week, Ebony, just took a tour of the inner workings of my storage space. This was her asking if she could look at my stuffs.
Today’s and yesterday’s sketch:
This of course being Buff Monster and Frank Kozik inspired; and my Bose sound speaker I’ve been doing and my Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. Oh and the motorcycle license plate from Alaska. I had a Tupperware full of em mixed, here’s the reference:
And then this was me and my McNugget kick of course. A packet of mayonnaise and a vinyl record, and the remote to the tv

Spent a good chunk of the day chatting with some potential dates. Mostly with a girl named Mxxxx, who is in a consensual non-monogamous marriage. She has kids also. It’s weird because she seems really into me and we are meeting tomorrow at 12:30pm. I’m excited to see what comes of this.

In line at Animal Kingdom helping my boy Orlando get in with his family.
I’m  parked in giraffe 41-49
It’s way too early for me to be awake.
And I have to work. Aaaand I’m covering some lunch shift for my other boy Tom who has been feeling ill.

Got called off for dinner because it was slow apparently.
Came home and let the roommate use her own car that I’ve been renting weekly.
Still working on cleaning and bagging those 45s my mother left to me by way of Danielito
So, I would say it’s time for me to maybe make a shortlist of women I’m dating/working on dating. I’ve got a few hat I’ve closed already and some still in the works so let’s see here:

The last couple nights in a row, Yaqeen has called me and asked specifically what I have done to further the business, Deep Space Ventures. This is good and bad that the has asked me. Bad because I haven’t done jack shit; good because he is holding me accountable. And it is giving me a little hurt to not do anything. So I will have to forge ahead. He is trying to better himself and make me be better too. Good shit.

I go to Dunkin’ Donuts just about every day to get a coffee. I stare at these fucking donuts and contemplate ordering a dozen and saying fuck all to my diet.
The moment had already passed.
I have to say I feel like I’m doing ok with this ketogenic diet.
Just saw a new white Honda Accord. Or was it a civic? Either way it reminded me of the second Amanda. Miss that chick too.

Minus the bear farewell concert:
My brother and I caught MTB on their farewell tour in Tampa back in November I think it was? I’ll have to check the date.
Anyway it was nice to spend time with him at a concert out and about. It was part of my attempt to stop being a dead beat sibling.
He and I have seen them numerous times over the years.
I ReDennised Andrea Zimmerman just now. Remind me to go and append the list.  Stuck on I-4 traffic on the way home from her place.
My exit was closed for construction so I had to take a big ass detour. I dint even care but I thought it was notable.

Fake funny depression. Meme depression. People taking some dark shit and slapping an out of context caption and making light of it.

Yeah everything is shit sometimes but do I want to off myself because I don’t have a pile of money to sleep on?

Yaqeen set it up last night so I didn’t have to work today. Corporate is in town and I’m just avoiding it all haha. Next few days off also. So that’ll take care of that.
What I need to do now is attempt to pick up at Yamasan just to have a couple extra bucks.
Just spoke to tobin briefly; he is definitely up his girlfriends ass haha. I’m ok with it. I suppose it’ll do some good for him seeing as it’s been forever since he’s: a)had a girlfriend b) gotten laid on the reg.
Also spoke to Frank; Microchip passed away very recently. His dog of 13 years or so. Back when Daylight District was  still in effect.

Naomi Singleton ‘broke up’ with me today. We only met the one time. After months of talking. She didn’t like being deceived by my fake age on Okc. Also she claims she broke out in cold sores after seeing me and kissing me. I’ve never had a single sore anywhere so unless I’m some wild carrier, she is mistaken.
Her perception is her reality however. And I did burn her with the age thing.
I’m considering putting my age to normal age.
Made a first sketch today. The storage space wall and the table with some shit on it
So hopefully I can try to do one a day for fun. I went to Michaels as well and picked up a few gel pens.
Remind me to tell you where all my art supplies are. (Spoiler alert; they’re being held hostage by Axxxxx if she hasnt chucked em out. If anything she’s probably assimilated them into her own art shit.

He wants me to undertake the tasks involving getting him booked in town and out.

Last night we had the STK makeup Christmas party for all the day-one-er’s. I almost didn’t go because I feel semi depressed and don’t wanna do shit all.
So we went and it was small but lost of the OG hang was there. Yaqeen of course and the lot.
We all just hung out drinking and roasting the shit out of each other.
Yaqeen and I are the roastmasters. He and I started this shit as a nice way to keep morale in the building at STK. And boy has it worked nicely.
Yaqeen told me the whole time I was away in Alaska that he kept the roasts alive. And my memory as well haha. Those were his words.
So, every day is now an HR nightmare in the building but no one seems to mind at all. I work the raunchiest coolest people ever. I would hang out with any of them outside of work.
So yeah the roast is strong with all of us. I swear if we all quit the restaurant biz and write comedy, we could get famous.
So as roastmasters, Yaqeen and I are the only two who can promote any of these jabronis trying to level up. They gotta be coming correct on the daily with hot roasts. And then when they fire of a real hum dinger of a zinger, based on the laughter of yaq and myself and any audience in attendance, that person will be leveled up immediately.
It’s fun. I love playing games all day every day.

Been burning oil and smoking flower every day since I’ve been back to Orlando.
I don’t want to say it unmotivates me because I do get things done, just at a slower pace. I’m on weed time.
I’m hanging  with Cxxxxxxxx outside of this McDonalds here:
228 S Orlando Ave
Maitland, FL  32751
United States
Called her up randomly to see how she was. Her stomach is tied up in knots over a boy she is also seeing.
You know, I’ve evolved into this person who isn’t jealous and just experiences women/ people as they are. I always say that some of my best relationships are been non-relationships: people I see when I see em, and we are both ok with it.
I don’t know how I got this way but here I am.
Where did I go askew with the way I view relationships? And by that I just mean the non traditional way people view things.
To be discussed later I suppose.
So yeah Cxxxxxxxx is soaring for food from McDonalds.

Becoming awesome.. hmm I still haven’t done that yet. Havent been doing much of shit lately. How do I get back on track?
The answer is to just do the damn thing.
whats my motivation? Good question to ask.
I don’t want to be an old server. And its weird because chronologically I am 38 but I don’t feel like that. A bit odd I suppose to think about.
so, whats the fix? Slowly work on becoming awesome. By the time I know it ,i’ll be there. But this is only going to come about through working every day toward things. I tell people all the time to just get 1% better every day, and here I am not doing that.
I need to implement all the advice I’ve been handing out.
That being said, what can I  work on today toward becoming awesome?
What are some things I want to accomplish? Well lemme refer myself to the giant 18 month plan I have set up

So I’ve been in Orlando for a couple months at this point. Back from my 6 month detour to Alaska.
Feels like I never left.
I don’t know if that’s a good statement or a bad one.

Bagged up some Buff Monster mini ice cream toys today. Been working on getting everything in plastic bags. Also I will start to labelling shit I want to get rid of with prices.
This is a little momentum toward having a booth at a con somewhere.
The real
Momentum would be to get a list of cons and then start spamming them for Frank and Tokyo Elvis and also for myself
Right, so coming back to Orlando. Not bad but it’s just me back in the same groove.

So I’m working last night (At STK if no one has been following) and I get a text from Naomi Singleton (now this is not the same Naomi who is Axxxxx cousin who I was messaging and Axxxxx got wind of it and ended things with me once again)
She was in Disney springs. I work in Disney springs.
So she hits me up asking what I’m doing after work; I say probably heading home, and she goes: orrrr you can hang out with me in Disney springs.
So we met for the first time, right in front of STK, by the bridge.
Very nice chemistry.
So we walked through the springs a little. Hugged and held hands. I sat her down on a bench behind house of blues

Tina Watkins comes back tonite. I hope she’ll let me use her car carte Blanche. She is defiantly motivated by  money so an extra hundo a week should do the trick.
So, however long it takes for me to get my income tax money back, I’m getting a vehicle. It blows not having one.

Taking a break from the space for food and mail and maybe big lots for some shit

Moved some good stuff around in the space. Those three bookshelves (one of the four didn’t make it) are really helping me maximize the Howard space in there.
I have to leave to pick Tina up now from the airport. Well, it was nice having the place to myself.
—-
So I sorted the car out with Tina, I’ll pay her and will use the car as I have been. Once I get that income tax return I’m gonna get a vehicle dammit.

Made out with a girl from my table last night. She was 23 I believe. She was with her parents and already drunk due to New Year’s Eve festivities. She and I were vining to the point where I caught her coming out of the bathroom and asked if she wanted to kiss at 12. She said she was trying to get a kiss right now, and then we did. And it was pretty on all night after that. A few more random stolen makeouts, and then got her number before we left. She was gonna ditch her parents at some point and wait for me after work, but surely she passed out. Let’s hope I hear from her today.

Kualitas Tinggi (High Quality)
Kualitas Menengah (Medium Quality)
Kualitas Rendah (Low Quality)

10 Unique Destination Wedding Locations & Ideas - Wedding Shoppe
Just picture it: Friends and family gathered together in some picturesque vacation spot. Everyone retelling old stories and making new memories while sipping on piña coladas – toasting to the lovely couple at every opportunity, of course. Then, after the vows are said and the dances are danced, that lovely couple (hint: you) stays right where you are to begin your honeymoon.
Doesn’t it sound dreamy? Well, the good news is, it’s actually possible to make that your reality. And we’re here to help make that come true!
The biggest reservation people have about a destination wedding is that it seems too big a hassle to plan such a big and important event like this from a distance. But the truth is, with some good guidance and resources, it doesn’t have to be so daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a handy-dandy guide you can turn to as you navigate the decisions and details of planning a destination wedding.
Your Guide to a Dream Destination Wedding
Let’s begin with the tried-and-true method of comparing the awesome stuff with the “ehh, I’m not crazy about that” stuff.
Pros (AKA The Awesome Stuff):
The aforementioned dreaminess of it all. Be prepared for unforgettable moments and flawless pictures (no filter necessary). Plus, it’s a little escape from reality for you and your loved ones.
An untraditional setting. If you’re looking to do something a little different, a destination wedding will definitely do the trick.
More ways to keep costs in check. The biggest expense when it comes to wedding is providing food and beverages to all your guests. So, the easiest way to save money is by keeping your guest list as lean as you can.
A built-in honeymoon! Wake up the next morning, store your wedding dress in the closet, and bring out the swimsuits – because the honeymooning has officially begun. No need to mess with the stress of airports and TSA checks when you’re already at your destination!
Cons (AKA The “Ehh, I’m not crazy about that” Stuff):
Travel expenses (airfare, hotels, food). Well, that’s fare. (Get it?) But luckily, there are tons of resources that can give you the best rates. Apple Vacations is great for finding destination wedding packages including affordable flights and hotel rates – and some good all-inclusive options, too! Also (speaking from experience here), the place where you do your ceremony or reception might offer a discounted rate for groups, especially if some will be staying with them or their affiliates. Tip: If you go abroad, prices are cheaper in, say, a Caribbean country because the cost of living is much lower.
The planning logistics and seeing it all unfold from a distance. Unless you have a large wedding budget, you probably won’t get to see your wedding venue before you arrive for the actual thing. This can be stressful for some, but it can be easier than you think thanks to to Facetime and Skype and WiFi being available pretty much everywhere on Planet Earth.
Communicating with your guests while phone-less abroad. If you travel outside your country, be prepared to deal with phone carriers and data rates. WiFi can be spotty, and you might not be able to rely on your smartphone for all your usual comforts like GPS. (Remember that you don’t have to go abroad! There are plenty of beautiful spots right in your home country!)
It just seems like a lot of work. Destination weddings are still weddings after all, and weddings are a ton of work. Tip: If you’re having your ceremony at a resort, they often have wedding or event planners on staff that could basically do all the heavy-lifting for you! We’re just sayin’ – it doesn’t hurt to ask. ?
What to Wear
Not shoes, for starters. Kidding, you can totally wear shoes if you want to. But how great is it that, in most of these places, you don’t have to?
When choosing dresses for you and/or your bridesmaids, the first thing you may want to first consider is the heat factor. Nobody wants to be uncomfortable and sweaty during your wedding, which should be a carefree, stress-free and sweat-free experience.
Whether you go short or long is totally up to you! We just have some suggestions about the material. For example, a floor-length satin gown for your bridesmaids might not be the best choice. Silk is not salt water-friendly and netting is not tree- or branch-friendly. So, most women we’ve spoken to agree that chiffon is the best choice when it comes to tropical weddings. It’s light and airy, and it comes in almost every color and style imaginable.

10 Fun & Unique Destination Wedding Locations:
1. Las Vegas, Nevada
I’m sure you had a feeling that Vegas would be included on this list, and with dozens of chapels along its famous strip, why wouldn’t it be?
The Vegas wedding is ideal for couples who want to elope quickly, but can also accommodate brides and grooms with full bridal parties and guests attached. Want to be married by Elvis? No problem. Rock on over to the Graceland Wedding Chapel. Really can’t wait to marry your honey? Head over to the “Tunnel of Love” and up to the “drive-thru” window at A Little White Wedding Chapel. Your nuptials can even be broadcast over the Internet for loved ones who couldn’t make the trip.
If you are planning a more traditional ceremony, Sin City has plenty of beautiful settings located in many of its hotels. A lot of hotel chapels offer packages that will help you save money on flowers, caterers, photography, and more—and many even have coordinators in-house who will help you with all of your arrangements.
One thing to note about a Vegas wedding, though, is to plan accordingly to season. As we all know, Las Vegas is located in the desert, so be prepared for the time of year in which you visit.
Viva, Las Vegas!
Cabo isn’t just for spring-breakers—the Mexican city remains one of the most popular places for Americans to get hitched. You can pretty much plan for beautiful and perfect weather no matter what time of year it is, and if you’re inclined to have a beach ceremony, it’s not unheard of for unannounced guests like humpback whales and other ocean life to make an appearance.
It’s relatively easy for guests to find a great place to stay because of the city’s plethora of hotels and resorts for a variety of different budgets, and you’d be hard-pressed to find locals who don’t speak at least some English. Even when the nuptials are over, bridal party participants and guests alike will have plenty of activities to keep them entertained like beach volleyball, snorkeling, hiking, golfing, and more.
And brides, let us not forget about the many spa treatments available! A massage on the beach sounds pretty heavenly.

Another unique spot to tie the knot includes the beautiful city of Florence. Deemed as one of the major art and history capitals of Europe and the birthplace of the Renaissance, you can find romance in Florence around just about any corner. For the more dramatic affair, la Salla Rossa or The Red Hall, is the most popular place in Italy for weddings and it’s easy to see why: The hall is decorated with incredible red carpets, drapes, and wall art dating back to its renovation in the 1860’s.

If you get a chance to explore amidst your plans and celebrations, check out the many exhibits and museums located in Florence, including the infamous Uffizi Gallery featuring art by Leonardo di Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and more.
Florence is also home to some of the best Italian cuisine in the world, which could be the perfect touch to your dinner and wedding reception.
4. Hawaii
Well, besides the fact that almost every spot in Hawaii is breathtaking and would make for gorgeous photos, there’s always good weather! Dry season runs from May through October, and after that, rainfall (if you get any at all) is short-lived and mild. If you could avoid going during tourist season (winter through early spring), even better. Also a big bonus: there are endless options for fun things your guests can do, no matter what their ages and interests.
5. Door County, Wisconsin
Besides the beautiful lakefront backdrop, this spot is convenient in so many ways. It’s a four-hour drive from Chicago, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin. There are wineries and farms all around the area, making for the tastiest beverages and freshest meals of your own choice. This quaint little vacation spot, located between Green Bay and and Lake Michigan, has earned the title of the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.”

Fall is gorgeous in Door County, although summer is usually the most popular time to wed here. If you choose to go the summer route, we recommend booking early. Winter is not ideal, as it often brings snow, frigid temperatures and icy roads. But hey, if you’re going for that Game of Thrones vibe, don’t let us stop you! (Just be sure to travel safe.)
6. Jamaica
What better spot to kick off the start of your marriage than in Jamaica? This destination is definitely catered to the island-and-sun-loving among us. Couples have been traveling to Jamaica to get married for decades due to its beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and colorful culture. Jamaica offers plenty of options for lodging, and features many all-inclusive varieties—great for guests on a tight budget.
7. Alaska
My personal favorite. This unique destination wedding location is geared toward the more rugged, adventurous couple—but don’t let the thought of snow and ice scare you—Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on earth offering scenic views of mountains, the ocean, rivers, waterfalls, lakes—really, you name it: Alaska’s got it. Even professional photography can’t do the view justice.
Speaking from experience, I was a little wary to attend my best friend’s May big day in Alaska. Will it be cold? Should I be worried about bears? But everything was lovelier than I ever could have imagined. Alaska, believe it or not, is beaming with native culture and extravagant forces of nature—all at a cool 60 degrees in spring.
Before the sight-to-behold of a ceremony held on the beach of one of Alaska’s southern shores, we were treated to hiking, conversing with locals, a boat ride around the bay, and even halibut and king salmon fishing charters. Some of the guests actually rented an RV and drove into Denali National Park after the reception was over—if you love getting back to nature and spending time in the great outdoors, an Alaskan destination big day comes highly recommended.
8. Cartagena, Colombia
When it comes to destination weddings, the coast of Colombia is a little-known gem that’s likely going to become more and more popular with time. The country left behind its complicated past of the 80s and 90s, and is now a much safer and fun place to visit. Prices in Cartagena are much more reasonable than in the States, and if you pass through South Florida, it’s a short two-hour flight from there.
You can either have your dream wedding on a gorgeous spot on the beach, or in La Ciudad Antigua (“the Old City”) with its vibrant colors and distinct architectural styles. Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities on the coast where the people are friendly, hospitable and thankful to have you there.
9. The Florida Keys
The Florida Keys are made up of a bunch of little islands – Key Largo, Conch Key, Islamorada, Little Torch Key, Sugarloaf Key and all the keys in between. So, you have tons of options you can look into! On top of the tropical allure and the many activities that come with it, the Keys also have some fascinating historical elements, too. Peak tourist season is between December and April, so you may want to shoot for some time in the summer or fall.
Pretty much any spot in The Keys would make for an unforgettable wedding destination. The region has all the beauty of the Caribbean with all the benefit of staying in the States. What we’re trying to say is, you don’t have to go too far to get to paradise.
10. Outer Banks, North Carolina
With its 130 miles of open beach, this region offers a picturesque location that might not be too far from home for you (but still feels like a vacation). The weather is best in the late spring, summer, or even at the start of fall. Of course, fall and winter will be most affordable for traveling, and the orange-y sunsets during those seasons will take your breath away.
You have the option of going with a tropical beach setting or a more rustic lighthouse backdrop – or both for different parts of the big celebration! Whichever route you choose, you can’t go wrong. Because even though it’s right here at home, it will feel like a scene out of a storybook.
Tips & Advice
Lastly, we wanted to leave you with a few tips for planning and pulling off a dream-come-true destination wedding:
* When you choose your venue, ask if there’s a wedding planner available that could help you coordinate everything.
* If you have friends or family that live near the destination, ask them to scope out the scene or meet with your planner/coordinator if need be.
* For the guests, make an itinerary that includes where they should be at what time, and the contact info for you or anybody else they can reach out to while there (maid of honor, best man, parents, etc.).
* Find out who will need special care and make arrangements for that.
* Give people a list of suggested activities they can do during their stay there (besides attend the wedding, of course). This could include places to eat, attractions to see, or tours to try out. Help your guests make the most of their time and fully enjoy the location you pick!
* Delegate tasks. If there’s ever a time to not feel bad asking for help, this is it. Plus, your loved ones will be thrilled to be involved in your special day and help in any way!
* Most importantly, take deep breaths, smile and have fun! You’re marrying your honey, and what could be sweeter than that?

1/8/2018
I was sleeping on Jake and Jaimie’s couch in Houston, and Jake woke me up by placing their cat, Boots With The Fur, on my stomach, hoping that Boots would start licking my face, grooming my eyebrows, or some other weird shit. Boots just hopped off, and I went back to sleep for a couple of hours after I watched Jake make some coffee for Jaimie and himself and kindly take it up to their bedroom to help wake her up.
Jaimie, Jake, and I went to Chuy’s in Houston. Ate so much Mexican. So. Much. Saw a lady dressed as an Elvis impersonator for Elvis’s birthday, and relatedly, a free Chuy’s meal. She was sitting alone...completely dressed up as Elvis during the Monday lunch hour...and this made me sad. I had to stop thinking about it.
Jaimie, Jake, and I had a conversation about Mom’s participation in AA. Jake told me that since she confided in him that she would be participating in the program, he barely has a relationship with her, and this deeply pains me. I told Jake and Jaimie that my Mom’s being in the program and judging me for my drinking habits/lying about her own past drinking habits infuriates me to no end. We talked it through, and I think it infuriates me because I am so close with my mother, and I know that I’m hurting her by not being an active participant in what she now sees as a huge part of her life. I hate to hurt anyone. I hate that Jake barely has a relationship with our mother anymore. I hate that my mom had to make the program a huge part of her life. I hate the negative consequences it has had on the relationships with her children. I appreciate the positive effects it has had on the relationships with our family.
We were walking into Jake’s apartment, casually talking about what I want to do with my career, and he said, “Just don’t ever be a public defender,” or something along those lines. That fucking hurt. I turned around and told him that I had been doing public defense for the last six months...that I loved it...that I had told him this a number of times. I just want my family to be interested in hearing about the things I’m passionate about. I want them to ask me questions about my work. I want them to see that my eyes light up and my speech becomes pointed and purposeful when I speak about my clients, about the criminal justice system, about my days. How can I want or expect this when my brother doesn’t even remember the work that I have been doing for the past six months?
On my drive home from Houston, I listened to the new N.E.R.D. album. Fire. Also listened to a podcast that J and J recommended...My Brother, My Brother, and Me. It’s fucking hilarious, and I belly laughed listening to pointless conversations about the unknown war between mail carriers and sanitation workers, whether eating a meal at Denny’s twice in a row is socially acceptable, what the first five chords of the intro to the show, “Greek,” are, etc. I love belly laughing, especially when I’m alone. It’s my favorite thing in the world. A good belly laugh.
Julie and I watched the Bachelor and cracked the fuck up at the amazing Latina woman, Bibiana, who just calls all of the other girls out on whatever the fuck she wants to. We made fun of Kolin falling asleep in his recliner, work in hand (he has a presentation tomorrow), a very familiar happening in our household.
I gave Julie and Kolin both long hugs before I went to crawl in bed. I’m reading a book, “Secrets for The Mad,” written by this adorable 22-year-old singer/songwriter about her life and depression and love and self-care/awareness. Honestly, this gal is fucking insightful for being so young...I don’t know if she completely embraces or exudes the qualities that she speaks to, but her book is enlightening and extremely relatable. Not done yet, but will be soon, I hope.
One of my favorite quotes from the book so far: “Dodie succeeds in creating beautiful songs because she isn’t scared of being afraid. The difference between a song that speaks to you and a song that you cringe at is that the success expresses vulnerability without fear.
“And how is that? Dodie’s bravery comes from her comfort with living honestly. She’s in the business of sharing everything dear to her, sooner or later. In realising that, and being true to herself, nothing can touch her. This has only come from years of practice; she has had to earn it, but its importance has mattered beyond her art. Mastery of a crafty is also the discovery of how best to make oneself.”
Also...
“But here I am, years later, and the idea of him, or anyone, being a part of my identity now is laughable. There are good people who will stay in your life, but even then they won’t be a part of you; you will wear their loyalty and kindness like armour, and they will add strength to your existence and build you up. You can lean on these people now and again, but they cannot hold you up all the time, and you certainly can’t expect just one person to on their own either.
“You are you, and you are wonderful. It will be hard to be with just yourself again, but now you can pour your love, care and attention solely into the number one priority in your life: you.”
Another...
“You’re surprised. It doesn’t hurt as much as you though it would; in fact, it makes you smile. You picture the memory, and the events around that night. There was a little argument in the car on the way there about who came up with that funny joke you both told to friends, you had held hands under the table and took it in turns to squeeze, you had tripped over the kerb on your way walking back and they had laughed. You stare into your younger eyes, trying to relate to the person whose heart was attached to the soul standing next to them, but you honestly find it difficult. These two people were happy together, here; but now neither of these versions of them exists, and this photo belongs to the past, before time had changed the world in the wonderful way it did.”

In Soviet Russia, Forbidden Music Was Smuggled on X-Ray Records
Music may transcend borders but, in an oppressive place like Soviet Russia, it was easier said than done. First, music had to be smuggled across borders and dispersed without its carriers getting caught. The morbid artifacts of this underground enterprise are now on display at an exhibition in Moscow called Bone Music.
From the late 1940s to the early 1960s, a subculture of young music lovers devised a way to sneak forbidden music around Soviet Russia by writing it directly onto old X-ray films. Adorned with images of skulls and bones, the discs were given names like "ribs" and roentgenizdat, and held within their grooves the sounds of Elvis Presley and Louis Armstrong.
Unknown singer, "Just tell I love her," late 1950s–early 1960s
During Stalin's rule and for decades following World War II, the Communist Party clamped down on outside influences, particularly those associated with principles celebrated in the West. Music was a top concern for the regime, so entire genres and artists were banned. Blatnaya pesnya, or "criminal songs," depicted the dark side of Soviet life, and had no place in the Party's system. White Russian émigré's like Pyotr Leshchenko were seen as traitors for not returning to the motherland and their songs were subsequently outlawed. And then there were Western sounds—tantamount to propaganda.
Bill Haley, "Rock Around The Clock," 1950s
"Jazz and rock 'n' roll were obviously censored because they were Western," British musician Stephen Coates tells Creators. "But a big chunk, probably most of it, was Russian music that was forbidden." Coates recently helped revitalized roentgenizdat after discovering a circular X-ray at a flea market in Saint Petersburg. The musician asked his Russian friends what it was, but they had no clue what he'd found. The seller even acted shady when Coates inquired more about it, but he purchased it anyway, brought the disc back to London, and eventually discovered it played Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock." "I was intrigued," he says, "and did more digging."
Piotr Leschenko, "Black Eyes," 1950s
Coates found some information about the discs online and was eventually introduced to a Russian academic, who turned him onto The Golden Dog Gang, two young music lovers named Ruslan Bogoslowski and Boris Taigin who secretly used a record duplication machine to etch songs by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and The Beatles onto discarded X-rays.
X-rays proved to be an suitable medium. They were cheaply and easily (albeit illegally) acquired from local hospitals that were required to throw out the flammable sheets. They took the groove relatively well, though nowhere near as well as vinyl—some X-ray discs apparently sound like listening to music through sand—and they were easy to fold into a shirt sleeve of pocket for a quick transaction. The X-rays were also stunningly beautiful.
The Golden Dog Gang were caught selling the discs in 1950 and were thrown into the gulag until Stalin's death in 1953. When they got out, they got back to work, this time making more elaborately designed discs, until they were caught again and sent back to the prison for a few more years. Coates has since connected with some of the bootleggers, producing a documentary and book on the topic.
He's also captured and compiled the products of their rebellious determination in the X-Ray Audio Project, which will be on display at the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow from August 15 to October 5.
See more about the Bone Music exhibition at the Garage website and follow the X-Ray Audio Project here.
