Multi-Chapter

'Tis the Season (To Be Tea-la-la-lally) by polutropos (Teen And Up, WIP, AU) I'm not one for modern AUs normally, not at all, and I honestly didn't want to read it at the start, but then I did (here on Tumblr) and got sucked in LOL. It's just great, and I love the Holiday Spirit! (I won't tag you here again, as you're tagged in the entire post anyway 😄 brilliant story)

Rising as if Weightless by StarSpray (Gen) The story of Elwing suddenly becoming the big sister/foster mom of her older brothers. This is so tender and beautiful and has so much character growth and so many bitter-sweet reunions, and above all so much depth.

A Pair of Stars by Magicfeather205 (Teen And Up) Pre-historic Elves, and the birth of future kings. That was honestly the most interesting story I read this year, with wonderful and very accurate world-building and a beautiful story (and thank you, author, I now can't get the 'Elwë and Olwë were indeed the first set of twin-boys in that family' out of my head where it fights a raging battle with my own headcanon) Also, I want this fic to be read by every single midwife (and, more importantly, other obstetrician). THAT is how you treat a birthing mom. That's how you handle unforeseen events. I loved this so so so much. It would have felt perfectly natural to have Trixie and Nurse Crane walk in there- sorry about that fandom-mixup)

As Flowers From the Sky by Beleriand Death Trip (E) Fingolfin/Elu Thingol... this is honestly a ship I would never ever have thought of myself, or seen a way in which this could work, but this story DOES work within canon, and beautifully so. It has it all, from very interesting world-building ideas to mild- (and VERY funny) horror-elements, and from foreshadowing and tensions to being wonderfully wholesome. You'll feel better after reading this, I promise!

The Unforsaken by @ceescedasticity (M, WIP) Last but definitely not least. I'll again link the first part of the series in the before-2023-part, and probably say more about it there. But yeah, absolutely a must-read! Go! Go, destroy the Orc-bank! (But don't blow yourselves up!)

One-Shots

Bloodied by ohboromir (Gen) Just a little First-Battle-story. I love to see Elu and Beleg and Mablung together so so so much (who would have thought, ey?).

Unstoppable Winds by LadyBrooke (Teen And Up) The destruction of Númenor as viewed by a few of their ancestors. I really loved this because I have never actually seen a story about the Fall of Númenor written from that POV and it did (or rather does) inspire me quite a lot in my own WIP. (I have to apologise here for not having more, I read so many great one-shots here on Tumblr that I just failed to save in some way. I may add to this list if I find the time to scroll through my timeline and see which of those I reblogged)

Before 2023

elves, once (M) by @ceescedasticity The part one of the series The Unforsaken belongs to as well. And for me the most recommendable story there is (though I would guess most who see this post will know the story already). The name says it all, really, as it is the story of all those canon-characters who ended up as Orcs. This is the sort of fic I really enjoy because it actually gives an answer to a question canon rises. The Orc-bank has since so much passed into my own headcanon that I sometimes forget that it is not actually canon (which leads to very awkward situations sometimes at our monthly discussing-Tolkien-gatherings, I tell you that)

across so wide a sea (Gen, WIP) by Adwen Unfinished, but one of the most hilarious stories I've ever read. I hope so much that author continues writing it one day, but even if they don't, it's a great laugh to read what is written, and ah, the possibilities!

The Carriage held but just Ourselves (Teen and Up) by StarSpray The story of how Melian and her descendants deal with death when they finally come to face it. I don't know when I last cried so much when reading a fic. It's not just that it's so so so sad (because yeah, go kill us all even in the one chapter that should be somewhat 'happy' 😭), but also incredibly beautiful and written perfectly in-character. It's looking into those women's minds. One of my bed-time-stories. (hmpf. All the others are multi-chapters form this year. ah well...)

My own

Yet Were Its Making Good, For This (not rated, but mature:ish; WIP) Ah, my problematic WIP. I wanted that story so so so so so badly written that I forced it, and it cost me MANY nerves. Mablung of Doriath/Elu Thingol. (How is it that nobody ever wrote that ship before?????????????) Works within canon if one squints one's eyes a bit. I'm currently working on the Epilogue ind Valinor, which might, MIGHT, for once give one of my stories a truly happy ending.

Into Oblivion (M) The smut-part of Yet Were Its Making Good, For This. Elwë/Mablung/Beleg. (Well, what do you all think they got up to during the journey?) Doesn't interfere with later canon.

Why, It Asks (Gen) It's a very short read, but one that is super dear to me for some reason. Elmo's thoughts as he stands by and watches his brother's grave being dug.

Moving On-series (Gen) Is this cheating, now? As it's really three one-shots? If it is, pick the last one to read. I'm just so fond of what my imagination spat out there world-building-wise LOL. It's the story of the time Elwë was missing to his and Melian's coronation, as mostly told from Elmo's POV.

Eyes In The Dark (Gen) I just had to put it here, as it's quite sweet to read, but given the hardly-mentioned-in-canon-characters it's hardly read by anyone. Give it a try, though. I bet you like it. Little Denethor is frightened by eyes in the dark, and runs for Lenwë for help. And Lenwë is being just about the best Dad ever.

And now we come to the bit I always dread. I suck at tagging people, because I always forget who enjoys such things and who doesn't, and because everyone's probably been already tagged. So let's do this differently, then- all writers who read this and want to share their recs, please do! (Cheating again, I know)

I know it's kind of mixing games now, but would you do a director's cut of your Daeron + "the clinging mists" prompt fill? There are so many delicious little nods and tid-bits in there, I'd love to get more on them!

Hey, there are no rules here! Thanks so much for asking about this prompt fill. 

I find these prompts often provide me with an opportunity to pull little pieces out of the longer stories that I may never write, or at least won’t write any time soon. Over a year ago now I took a bunch of notes for a long fic about Daeron set during the time of the Great Journey when the Teleri searched and waited for Thingol to return. 

Tolkien’s notes published in The Nature of Middle-earth say that the Elves stopped along the way to make babies, so I figured that’s why they were stopped near Nan Elmoth when Thingol made his trip to visit Finwë and never came back. So I headcanon that Daeron’s mother was pregnant with him when Thingol disappeared, and he grew up during a time of instability and general anxiety. It also means Olwë would have been the first leader of his people that he knew and, as I tried to show in the ficlet, he had a lot of respect for him.

I think there’s a lot of potential for drama with the Teleri during this period and I have seen very little fic about it (recs are welcome!).

With this ficlet I wanted to offer a glimpse of that drama. I also wanted to show the closeness between the Teleri who stay and the Teleri who leave. Olwë’s people and Thingol’s people weren’t just distantly connected members of the same tribe (nevermind that the two of them were literally brothers!). Many (most?) of these Elves would have known each other personally. I think showing that adds a lot more depth to the Noldo-Sinda relations in canon which, with my Daeron/Maglor brain rot (and don’t tell me you didn’t know this is where we were going), is one of my favourite things to think about.

Addendum: also because I will never stop talking about it, I briefly alluded to this drama in Hearken Still Unsated, during the council scene in Menegroth when Thingol receives the message from Cirdan with the first substantial news about the Noldor:

Eöl’s dark eyes dart across the floor to where Daeron stands, seeking his support as he once did on the plains of Estolad in those long, uncertain years of waiting. Daeron recalls bitter words exchanged between kin. He hears again the accusations of betrayal breaking against Olue’s proud composure as he prepared to lead yet one more piece of Elu’s splintered people on towards the Sea. He sees again the faces of his own parents among that host and he is pricked by the abiding sting of resentment and regret. Where are the Lindai who followed Olue now? Why have they not returned?

Also one of my favorite writers @cheloueliott - café six was literally the death of me (i hadn’t cried so much in a long time kajskahs) also the series Madeleine is the cutest thing ever and also all of the other fics

@oceanicinception has a new multi-chapter - in motion - and the first chapter is amazing also her other works are wonderful

XJane on ao3 has amazing fics - one WIP multi-chapter tea for two is great but also worth it to go through all of her works

Dis/connected by natalie19h34 on ao3 is an amazing one chapter

Though tides may change a WIP multi-chapter by @ottelis is incredible and her writing is so deep and I felt so emotional while reading it

@pinkplanetaries is such an incredible writer and all her fics are perfect, all of them made me laugh so hard and I felt really happy after reading, the last one I read was the most beautiful view and it is amazing

@surrealsunday has me whipped with all her fics, just today I read her one chapter spark to flame and it is really worth reading it

@flying-elliska also incredible writer, I will never get over les diamants sont eternels (another one that could easily be a novel) and I’ve been meaning to read ma maison c’est toi

last dance by @livvyblxckthxrn: elu in a ballet, enemies to lovers andddd roommates au ??? literally the best thing! and the writing??? just amazing!! also i have just started reading seven minutes in heaven because i was waiting for it to finish and what i’ve read so far seems v promising!! the format is unique and the concept is amazing

i’ve been waiting here (i deserve this kiss) by @lifeisevak: the absolutely sweetest ‘sorting dvds’ fic you’d love!! and i’m talking lucas being a little shit and eliott not being able to resist him after when he dodged his moves like!!! also meg’s rainbow fluff drabbles deserve special mention ‘cause they were all so sweet and fluff and i loved reading them so much (i hope i included the right tag for them agasfdga)

flickers by @dcmaurys: a fake dating social media au!! fake dating is one of my favourite tropes and the way frankie does it is honestly so good and refreshing!! i love the way she incorporated eliott’s project into the fic and his posts just. have me crying on the floor every time

i’m just going to link @tawmlinsun ‘s writing page because i couldn’t pick just one of lauren’s works lol. from her elu drabbles to multi-chaptered fics, everything is worth a read (or in my case: several reads ahadgs)

 wandering tides (wip) by @lallemanting: it’s a pirate au and i love sara’s take on it! lucas comes with a past he seems to be running away from and from what i’ve gathered, the whole deal with black rose somehow ties into it. an intriguing world has already been put forward and i can’t wait to see how it all plays out!!! and also for want of gold made me cry like the writing is sophisticated and beautiful and fuck!! the concept behind the soulmarks likebsdjfhf just give sara’s works a read and you won’t be disappointed

one call away by @demaury: elu neighbours and enemies to lovers au??? man this fic is so good!!! lucas is a snarky spikey assole and eliott’s just there to make sure he doesn’t kill himself by his own stupidity! and their banter ajdgad gold

lemonade by @pinkplanetaries: i’d be a fool not to rec this one. because fuck if this isn’t one of the best fics ever!!! like cor comes up with the best concepts and this one was just so good!! camboy!lucas and eliott as a dedicated fan was the sweetest and the tangiest thing ever agagsdfhgsd also please read her other works too if you haven’t because they all are *chef’s kiss*

les diamants sont eternels and a rose, by any other name by @flying-elliska: the former a lawyer/gangster(?) au and the latter a myth/boss-employee/bodyguard/sort of magical au. they’re both thrilling and sexy and so much fun to read. you get swept into this world created by ellie with numerous twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat like....fuck

things i forgot to tell you by @brieflygorgeouss: do i even need to say how beautiful this fic is?? friends-with-benefits is such an interesting concept and it’s done so well in this fic. and with joana’s amzing writing, it’s bound to give you all the feels there are

anything and everything written by @sandalwoodhusbands especially this kiss like real people do series. the first part was all the bit angsty and emotional and beautiful and ro has just posted the prequel to it and i can’t wait to get into it!!

angst-free fic recs ?

hello there! i haven't been reading much elu stuff lately, but with the help of my friends i've come up with a pretty nice list ❤️

most of these are really short, since it's hard to find angst-free fics but they're 100% worth the read

sky never looked so blue by @eliotts-eyes - also known as literally anything this girl has ever written. seriously, if you're looking for angst free elu fics, she's your perfect person. her stuff never fails to warm my heart, she can take any scene and turn it colorful and beautiful. this one in particular feats established relationship elu + a trip to the sea. and what's better than lucas, eliott, the sun on their backs and salt water in their lips?

all in the golden afternoon by @tawmlinsun - it's a sweet, little piece that got me squealing when i got the notification. boyfriends wearing matching clothes is a soft spot not gonna lie, and i honest to god wanted lauren to marry me when she wrote that

blue by @choupichoups - as everything choupi writes, this is a gorgeous soulmate!au turned childhood best friends to lovers and it's SO. GODDAMN. CUTE. seeing lucas and eliott grow into themselves and with each other is something that tugs at my heart

northern lights by @choupichoups - once again, amazing adorable piece featuring a very peculiar marriage proposal and elu being ridiculously in love

i'll carry you over the threshold by @enter-srodulv - more married elu! who can get enough of those? not me. this takes us through their marriage proposal, going over the pre-wedding jitters (also known as eliott sees his baby in the next 3 minutes or he dies), the wedding night and eventually, their home

it's nice to have a friend by @livvyblxckthxrn - 5 + 1 fic featuring hardcore pining and obvious yet incredibly oblivious boys. friends to lovers, eliott and lucas' friendship is incredibly sweet and god that kiss. that kiss was long overdue. stunning piece of work

un universe a nous by @sweetbitterpdf - short and soft. the tension between them at the begining makes me want to shake them both by their shoulders and scream YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. mutual pining, as it often goes with these two, but they get it right in the end

the last thing i hear at night (and the first thing in the morning) by cmc - oh god this one. i can only hope i will have this kind of dynamic with my partner even after years of being together. seriously, they're so damn sweet. a graduation, a surprise or two and one hell of a marriage proposal, plus it's gonna make you so proud of eliott, you'll probably feel like lucas for a moment. kudos to their entire dynamic, i'm in love with their love

with fire by @polarispluie - yet another short adorable piece. this is the definition of meet-cute. i love neighbors au's and this one is so funny and light-hearted, super easy read. their banter-y flirting is adorable, and honestly, i too would be completely enamored buy the new squirmy guy next door asking for help to kill a spider

sleep on it by helloferelith - this is just 1k of lucas and eliott cuddling and being soft for each other. it's a get together fic, really short, but god if all that snuggling didn't make me soft in the heart. they're so so so sweet with each other. their relationship is at that point right before they get together and it makes things x100 lovelier

sk8ter boi by @lepetitepeach - now if i haven't recommended this fic 10 times in the past year i haven't done it once. okay, not gonna lie, this fic has a smidge of angst in the form of insecurity and miscommunication BUT LISTEN ANON. it's so worth it. you'll blink and you'll miss it, i promise. please, give this one a try. my whipped boys with so many feelings that they don't know where to put them anymore. it's lighthearted and sweet, and their relationship is god tier adorable

no shame by @livvyblxckthxrn is so light-hearted and lovely and her other works are so good as well! (I’m really enjoying her current WIP seven minutes in heaven - it’s really unique and super engaging and I’m excited for the next part!)

@tawmlinsun has been posting some of her little ficlets on ao3 and I highly recommend those for some bite-sized fluffiness (also the hogwarts au ones are SO good i’m obsessed)

Summer Shenanigans

Summary:

Eliott pesters Lucas about being short and swimming in the deep end of the lake when he can't even swim himself.

It was a hot July day and Eliott was more than thankful for the chilly waters of the lake. He was laying on a giant, orange slice floaty with a floppy sun hat on. He laid on his back and listened to the gentle hiss of the water's waves and the buzzing of the bugs.

He, Lucas, Idriss, and Imane were staying at Emma and Yann’s summer cabin, the perks of having rich friends right? It was nearing evening and Idriss and Imane were at the cabin, working on barbecue for dinner; and Lucas was out picking up some of the ingredients they had forgotten. Eliott had quickly ran off to the lake before he could be tasked with anything, and because of the heat, no one tried to follow him.

Eliott grinned under his sunhat and dipped his hand into the cool, green lake, hair rose on his arm and he sighed. "This is the life," He said aloud.

"It sure is."

Eliott bolted up like an electric shock had been set through him, his sun hat fell off onto the floaty and he frantically looked around him until he saw Lucas, bobbing in the water. "What the hell man?" He looked towards the lake house than back to Lucas. "When did you even get back? And how did you swim out here without me hearing you?"

Lucas rolled his eyes and swam closer to the floaty to put his arms on it. His long hair was messy and his bangs were wet and plastered to his forehead. "I literally just got back," He licked a few droplets of water from his lips. "And haven't you ever learned to swim quietly?"

Eliott grabbed his sun hat and put it back on, the rim flopped in front of his eyes and he had to push it up with his wrist. "I never wanted to be a water assassin ninja when I grew up, so no." He stuck his tongue out in a playful manner.

With a laugh, Lucas stuck his tongue out too. "Then what did you want to be?"

"An archaeologist on the moon, duh! I wanted to dig up alien bones." Eliott nodded proudly, "But- wait how are you swimming out here?" He looked over the edge of the floaty and saw his face reflected back at him in the water. "Isn't it like ten feet deep here?"

"Because my dad taught me to swim when I was little?" Lucas answered in a questioning tone. "What's your point?"

"Because! Babe, how do I put this lightly-?" Eliott sighed and gestured vaguely. "You're 5'6"."

Lucas groaned and pushed himself away from Eliott and his floaty. He laid on his back in a dead man's float and closed his eyes. "What does my height have anything to do with how I swim?"

"I just meant that-" Eliott looked at how Lucas was drifting further away from him and then started to paddle closer to him, all the while still sitting on the floaty. "I just meant that you're so small! And the waters deep! And you don't have a floatly or pool noodle or anything!" He puffed, finally reaching Lucas. "I'm not using my privilege of your boyfriend to mock your height this time, I swear!"

Lucas opened one of his eyes, "You mocked my height even before we started dating, Eliott."

"That was different! That was flirting!" Eliott flopped on his stomach on the floaty and grabbed Lucas’ hand in the water. "Now I just do it because I love you but we're not talking about your baby, adorable height." He breathed, a grin pulling at his lips. "We're talking about how you being in such deep waters without a floaty makes me feel uneasy."

"Eliott the only one in deep waters now is you!" Lucas grumbled, but he didn't pull his hand away from Eliott’s grip. "I don't need a floaty, I'm fine! I can swim without anyone's help!"

"I'm not saying you can't!"

"Yeah but it feels like it!" Lucas huffed, and turned away, and for a moment he was silent. Then he asked, "Would it honestly make you feel better if I got a floaty?"

"Ugh, yes!"

"Then scoot over."

"Wait, what."

Lucas sighed, "I said scoot over! I'm not going back to get my own floaty when I clearly don't need one." He took his hand out of Eliott’s and pulled the orange floaty nearer to him. His arms dripped water onto the shiny, plastic smelling thing. "So scoot over if you want me to get on a floaty."

"If this thing pops you're buying me a new citrus baby." Eliott muttered, scooting over on the floaty.

"Sure, if it gets popped I'll get you a new one." Lucas rolled his eyes and attempted to pull himself onto the floaty. But it was hard, he slipped and slid and couldn't get a decent hold on the thing. It wobbled dangerously. "Some help would be nice, Mr. I'm-Worried-About-My-Boyfriend's-Safety-Even-Though-He-Could-Whoop-My-Ass-Demaury."

Eliott gasped and stuck out his hand to Lucas, "Hey, for your information it's I'm-Worried-About-My-Boyfriend's-Safety-Even-Though-He-Could-Whoop-My-Ass-Demaury-Lallemant to you! I earned your last name fair and square."

"We're not even married-" Lucas shook his head, he grabbed ahold of Eliott’s hand and tried to pull himself back up on the floaty again.

"We don't have to be married to have each other's names," Eliott said absentmindedly. The floaty was quaking under them, making little waves in the water. Lucas was just almost on it, but it was turning and rising under Eliott until the orange thing tipped and sent them both into the lake with a splash.

Eliott popped out of the water with a shrieking sputter, he was flailing his arms and trying desperately to stay afloat."Lucas! Where are you!? Where's my hat!?" He spun around in the water and when Lucas surfaced besides him, he latched to him like a lifeline.

"Eliott!" Lucas shouted, trying to keep his head above water while Eliott clung to him and made it horribly hard for him to swim. "What are you doing? Just swim!"

"I-I can't swim all that well! Why do you think I stayed on the floaty?" Eliott gasped, accidentally pushing Lucas down to keep himself above water. "And I've lost my hat!"

Lucas shot out of the water and coughed, "You're literally drowning me and all you're worried about is your hat?" He screamed.

"Oh shit! Sorry!" Eliott loosened his grip on Lucas, but still clung to him like a child.

They were both breathing heavily for a moment while Lucas regained his ability to tread water with Eliott hanging off of him like a leech. "Eliott?" He asked.

"Yeah?"

"You mean to tell me that you can't swim yet you came out to the deepest part of this lake? Is that right?"

"Yeah but I did it on the floaty. What's your point?"

"My- my point?" Lucas asked exhaustively. "My point is that you were getting on me for being short and being out this far when you can't even swim!"

"Well it's because I can't swim that I got worried about you being out this far!" Cried Eliott. "If something happened to you I wouldn't of been able to help!"

Lucas just closed his eyes and sighed, then he slowly started to swim back to shore with Eliott still hanging off of him. "Well now you know I know how to swim," He muttered. "How about I get you a new sunhat if you take swimming lessons?"

As they passed it, Eliott reached out and grabbed the handle of his orange floaty. It trailed behind them in the water and bobbed on the ripples. "Fine, but only if you teach me."

"Only if you don't drown me in the process."

"I can't promise anything."
