Crosby Stills & Nash.
Part of the soundtrack of my youth. I have been looking out for records missing from my collection. I had no CSN or CSN&Y. We had to pick up the grandkid after her dance class. We stopped at this mega-mall close by and there is a real live record shop in it.
So I had to go in and I did! Just flipping through the records like the old days. I had nothing in mind. The Zen of record shopping. Oh what is this? A double LP of CS&N hits. No Neal Young just the trio. European pressing by Rhino who are the guys doing good reissues of old stuff. Ok its mine!
First and most important this is important music. It was era defining heartfelt and both simple and complex. Three guys who could sing and harmonize. Apparently they sang into one mike for the harmony just like they would in their real world living room. Oh and they wrote good songs. Strike that GREAT songs.
I never bought these albums before as It was always someone else's dorm room. I just skipped the guys playing John Denver. I said it was my youth dint I?
This a Greatest Hits compilation from 4 CSN albums and it has the good ones. It is a Rhino issue of Atlantic label and was mastered by Bernie Grundman. Pressed in Yurp. The vinyl is quiet. The sound is clear. The vocals sound like real people. Some songs there is just a Guitar. Some a full band.
Aside from the music there is a documental aspect. Many of the "stars" of the era lived on the same road and hung out. Mama Cass Elliot is the person who got these people together. If you are too young to know that name then look her up. Others on the street were Joanie Mitchel, Judy Collins, and Peter Tork (the TV guy). Oh just look it up.
Is this an audiophile album? I just don't care. It is a good album. It is clean and clear. Some of the sound is a bit canned if that makes sense. Hey pre-digital is this. I am hearing the decisions that the recording engineer and the artists made. The mix is simple. Recorded in a studio, no real space. You can hear fingers on the guitar strings if that turns you on.
I am glad I found this one. Now I do not have to buy those 4 albums.

Roach Reads: The Story of Atlantis and The Lost Lemuria, Part 2: The Story of Atlantis, Cont'd
Last time in The Story of Atlantis and The Lost Lemuria, we were ignoring a bunch of hilariously spurious "evidence" supporting the claim that Atlantis was not only a real place, but was an entire continent comprising a huge chunk of what is now the Atlantic Ocean.
I would like to remind everyone, once again, that Atlantis is a fictional city, invented by Plato for the sake of making a point.
We now move on to Scott-Elliot's explanation of how Root Races are formed. According to Theosophy, there have been five root races to date, each of which was carefully engineered and guided by spiritual beings called Manu (named for the Manu of Hindu lore, though in practice they seem more similar to traditional Christian angels).
The following quotation refers to these arrangements: "There are also Manus whose duty it is to act in a similar way for each Root Race on each Planet of the Round, the Seed Manu planning the improvement in type which each successive Root Race inaugurates and the Root Manu actually incarnating amongst the new Race as a leader and teacher to direct the development and ensure the improvement."
The way in which the necessary segregation of the picked specimens is effected by the Manu in charge, and his subsequent care of the growing community, may be dealt with in a future Transaction. The merest reference to the mode of procedure is all that is necessary here.
So, supposedly, human history as we know it is due to these guys' long-term eugenics(?) project. Apparently it's not enough to create some dudes and teach them how to do well; you have to selectively breed/train them over centuries to be better than their predecessors.
According to this book, the sub-races of the fourth root race (effectively, our obsolete forebearers) include Toltecs, Akkadians, Mongolians, and "Original Semite(s)". So if you're wondering how racist this whole idea is, the answer is "very".
Now these folks didn't all live on Atlantis; they were all over the place. In fact, according to the book, the first of these sub-races started in Lemuria, around the coast of what is now Ghana.
The Rmoahals were a dark race—their complexion being a sort of mahogany black. Their height in these early days was about ten or twelve feet—truly a race of giants—but through the centuries their stature gradually dwindled, as did that of all the races in turn, and later on we shall find they had shrunk to the stature of the "Furfooz man."
"Furfooz man" refers to a pair of skulls found in the vicinity of Furfooz, Belgium. I looked into this to find out what stature Scott-Elliot is referring to here, but I was unable to find a concrete answer; my best guess is that it was fairly comparable to modern humans. I'm not sure why this book is claiming that our ancestors used to be giants, either; I know that's a popular claim in quack circles, but who Theosophists in particular would be invested in it I don't know.
Supposedly, these folks warred with the sixth and seventh sub-races of the third Root Race for a while, before some migrated northward and the rest worked out their differences, intermarrying with those earlier, less "refined" sub-races. Their descendants allegedly spread all over the equatorial and south regions... which of course overlap with a sizeable chunk of Africa, because this is presumably Theosophy's origin story for Black people.
Thanks! I hate it.
The second sub-race seems to be a predecessor of various native Americans, and gets off without any grievous insults. The book doesn't really care that much about them, though, since we move on to the Toltecs.
We now come to the Toltec or 3rd sub-race. This was a magnificent development. It ruled the whole continent of Atlantis for thousands of years in great material power and glory. Indeed so dominant and so endowed with vitality was this race that intermarriages with the following sub-races failed to modify the type, which still remained essentially Toltec; and hundreds of thousands of years later we find one of their remote family races ruling magnificently in Mexico and Peru, long ages before their degenerate descendants were conquered by the fiercer Aztec tribes from the north.
You know what? I will literally take Lovecraft's sapient sea cucumbers over this shit. This was a rollercoaster of racism. We've got all these suspiciously nice things to say about the Toltecs, but wait a second - we can't have you thinking that modern South Americans are any good! Just the ones that fit our narrative of white (and more generally, genetic) superiority. -^-
We've only been through three of the seven sub-races so far, but I'm going to go ahead and wrap this post up here, for the sake of keeping egregious racism into reasonably digestible chunks. More bullshit coming soon.

Manual Types Of Locks
When people started to think that they have precious things and they need a place where they can be saved so they started using the locks to their simple places a safer place. Locks are the first things that man invented to make a place safe. Since then locks have remained very important because there was no other way that could be used to keep the places secure enough. People have been trying to make the best locks they can because the demand of locks has never finished. Time passed and needs changed but the importance of locks is still there. The locksmiths have remained important and people still want them because they are the maker of such a thing that cannot made by anyone else in the world. Locks are of many different kinds and they are differentiated according to their size and the type of functioning they perform. It is not possible that you can use a single lock for many different environments because the size of a lock is also one thing that makes it more secure.
Bigger the lock is more it is strong and more it is difficult to breach. We can see that that places where there are a lot of precious things like the banks and other places like very big jewelry shops they have very big locks and those are manually operated because they cannot be automated as there is a chance that someone might be able to get through the automatic system but they cannot get through the manual opening of the lock until they have the opening keys. This why manual locks are of so much importance because they have to opened manually by someone otherwise they cannot be opened. A big lock might consist of several keys and those keys open the lock by a special combination so if someone gets the original keys but they does not know the correct combination of the lock then they cannot open the lock and now the locks are so well designed that if you try wrong combination they are jammed and then they can only be opened by using the correct key combination.
There is very less chance that you use a good lock and after that somebody goes through the lock because the locksmiths are confident enough that their locks are very well designed and they also say that it is an engineered product so it is only one of its kinds and it cannot be made so easily because locksmiths now days are more like designers that make a product that is copy rights protected and if someone else makes the product like that then they have to face the consequences. It is also very difficult to get to the bottom of the idea about the design of a lock and then design a key for that. This is only possible is someone has the exact or more knowledge than the locksmiths themselves. It is not easy to get that much knowledge.

London Bridge vs Tower Bridge – Travel Guide & Things to DO
Visitors to London have many incredible sights to choose from in this historic city. Two of the most popular are the London Bridge and Tower Bridge. It’s perhaps not surprising that many people often confuse the two bridges, believing that they are the same or not knowing that two separate bridges exist.
For those who are planning a trip to London, here is a brief history of both bridges, their significance, and the many things to see, do, and eat when visiting this part of the city.
London Bridge
London bridge is different from Tower Bridge
This bridge which connects London with Southwark is the latest of the several iterations of the bridge which goes back to Roman times. Finished in 1973, the latest version of the bridge is quite modern in design. It allows a large amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic to flow across. The bridge itself is several meters upstream from where the previous London Bridge stood and is of the box girder design crafted from steel and concrete.
The first London Bridge was constructed around 55AD by the Romans to help consolidate their holdings in England. The location for the bridge was arguably chosen because it was shallow and often used as a ford for many centuries. The original bridge only lasted for around five years as it was destroyed during a revolt. But it has been rebuilt many times since.
London bridge in the old days
The most famous of the London bridges lasted from 1209 to 1831 and took 33 years to fully construct. It had a drawbridge to allow for sailing ships to pass and gatehouses for protection. Up to 200 buildings were constructed on the bridge which helped make it a fire hazard. Until 1729, London Bridge was the only road-crossing of the river downstream of the Kingston upon the Thames.
The bridge itself has been famously depicted in literature and art, but arguably its greatest claim to fame is a nursery rhyme, “London Bridge is Falling Down”.
Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge in London
Built between 1886 to 1894, the Tower Bridge is the more recognizable of the two bridges thanks to its iconic towers. So striking is the bridge that it is often mistakenly called the London Bridge which is less than half a mile upstream. Interestingly enough, the Tower Bridge does not connect London itself to the Southward Bank. But instead connects the bank to the Tower Hamlets.
Although the appearance of the bridge make it seem from the medieval era, it was constructed during Victorian times. Inside the towers are engines that allow the central span to be raised, allowing river traffic to flow through unimpeded. The bridge’s two towers are tied together near the top by two walkways which help the bridge remain stable.
Tower Bridge
If you plan to visit the bridge, keep in mind that the deck is free and accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians. If you want to visit the high-level walkways, along with the Tower Bridge Exhibition which includes Victorian engine rooms, then you will be charged an admission fee.
London Bridge vs. Tower Bridge
There is little doubt that the history of London Bridge makes it the more famous of the two, yet the Tower Bridge is the most iconic thanks to its remarkable towers which have come to symbolize the city. In terms of a tourist attraction, while the current London Bridge draws in the visitors, it is no match for the Tower Bridge.
The old model of London Bridge before changing to what it looks today.
Sadly, none of the previous versions of the London Bridge still exist, of which the Old London Bridge which lasted from 1209 to 1831 before being dismantled was arguably even more striking than the Tower Bridge. However, this is not to say that the current London Bridge is not recognizable. It has been part of art, literature, television, and movies. Arguably most notably for a famous scene with actor Hugh Grant crossing the bridge during rush hour in the film About a Boy. The bridge is used by residents and tourists alike to get a stunning view of London and the Thames.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit London is the months of March, April, and May. This is a time when the temperatures are mild, the parks are green, and the flowers are blooming which makes it an unforgettable experience. However, spring is also the busiest months of the year and prime tourist season. So, expect to pay more for hotels and transportation if you visit during this time.
You can also try for the early fall months of September and October which also offer warm weather, but far fewer crowds. While the green of London’s parks may fade to brown during this time, you will have greater access to the many tourist attractions.
For even fewer crowds, be sure to visit during the middle of the week and avoid weekends. This is when most people in the city work, so you should have greater access to must-see places such as the bridges, the Tower of London, and other attractions. Just be mindful that schools often schedule field trips for their students during this time.
Best Places to See
Given that both bridges are so close together, you can make a day of traveling through London on foot. This means crossing one bridge, visiting the locations on one side of the Thames as walk to the next bridge and cross back. While the most obvious places to see are the bridges themselves, there are several other attractions that will catch your eye.
HMS Belfast: The most important British warship remaining from the World War II era, the HMS Belfast offers an unforgettable trip to the past when Britain ruled the ocean. The cruiser spent much of her career guarding convoys across the Atlantic and is now one of the best museums in the city.
HMS Belfast
More London: Located along the River Thames, City Hall is a must-see location that offers great views of both bridges and provides a resting place before moving on to see the rest of the city.
More London
Southwark Cathedral: Built in 1220, this is the oldest Gothic church in all of London. A spectacular structure, it offers a great place to gather and marvel at its construction.
Southwark Cathedral London
The View from The Shard: The tallest building in London offers a spectacular view of the city, nearly 40 miles on a clear day. You can visit the location and take the elevator or lift up to the 72nd floor for a spectacular view.
The View from The Shard
Tower of London: Probably the most iconic part of London apart from Buckingham Palace, the tower is a short walk from the London Bridge and makes the perfect destination.
Tower of London
There are many other places to see and visit when strolling between the bridges. Just be sure to allocate enough time to take in the sights that you want and to enjoy the many local establishments for the food and beverages that they offer.
What to Eat
No day spent about both the Tower and London Bridges would be complete with getting a bite to eat and sampling the food and beverages that are sold in the area.
Aqua: This celebrated wine bar located near London Bridge offers a fabulous view and an incredible, modern atmosphere inside. The tall ceilings and sleek décor reveal that this is an expensive place to order wine and you better book ahead. But few wine bars are as stunning as this one.

To the south of Miami are the Florida Keys, a chain of coral islands of varying size that extend for more than 110 miles between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico.
Until a devastating hurricane in 1935, they were linked by a rail line extending to Key West, from which there were boats to Havana, Cuba. The boldly engineered Overseas Highway, US 1, now runs over 42 bridges and numerous artificial causeways to the south-eastern tip of the United States. The little islands of Sands Key, Elliot Key, Cotton Key, and old Rhodes Key, lying off Biscayne Bay, are currently a part of the Biscayne National Underwater Park, established in 1980. Off Key Largo are the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary. The Florida Keys are filled with beautiful wildlife, expansive beaches, and plenty of water adventure opportunities, including snorkeling, diving, and swimming with the dolphins. Tourists will realize many interesting history here too, particularly because of pirates who used to call the Keys home.

3. Dry Tortugas National Park
Located in the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, seventy miles from key west, Dry Tortugas parkland is accessible solely by boat or seaplane. This archipelago of seven beach-ringed islands is also home to Fort Jefferson, a massive 19th-century fortification that takes up one island in its entirety. The park is a favorite among snorkelers and divers for its coral and seagrass, as well as the numerous shipwrecks that can be easily spotted under the surface. Popular snorkeling spots are the Historic Coaling Pier, Fort Jefferson's moat wall, and Garden Key's coral heads.

-58°
Why is it so difficult these past 14 years, to reach the people with the authority to do something that might serve the public-good. I have tried to reach professors, scientists, governors, senators, reporters and weathermen without any success to speak of. I’m talking about Irma, Wilma and Andrew, hurricanes that is–to name a few. Call me 🐷 headed but I don’t know why the government and the scientific community isn’t doing something to mitigate or attenuate the force of these storms. Like they say, we all talk about the weather but we don’t do anything about it. The problem is that anyone who thinks he can change the weather is going to be viewed with a certain amount of suspicion. Well here I am.
The title of this blog is -58, i.e. the minus 58 meridian of the North Atlantic. This is arguably the region of one thousand square miles where a given hurricane eye would be spoiled as to weaken it’s strength. Five destroyer class ships, each covering a manageable 200 miles would pump 💧 from the thermocline to reduce the 💧 temperature and in so doing spoil the system that is producing the storm. I would like to think that many people could come up with other crazy schemes such as this. Would it work? Could it? What with the death and destruction that these storms bring, you would expect a greater effort to study remediation. Governments and universities spend a half a billion dollars a year on various unrelated research. Could this hypothesis be simulated in a lab?
What do you think?
=============================================================
How did you become an illustrator? How did you start your blog?
I have always 💛 making comics, but I started to really feel inspired to become an illustrator through the support of close friends and family. My parents aren’t/weren’t very supportive growing up, and only after leaving my home was I able to really explore the field. I originally started the blog to archive my ideas and little doodles, and soon started to get a bit of a following!
How has Tumblr allowed you to explore your identity?
Through Tumblr, I was able to connect with people who expressed their gender and identity in a way I had never seen in person. I was able to 👀 myself and my identity more clearly, and felt more comfortable experimenting with labels and pronouns. I came out online before I came out in real life, and I think the boost I got from the community helped me build the courage to come out. My parents do not support my identity, and I have had a lot of difficulty in being kicked out of my home. But, with some folks I connected with through Tumblr and trans siblings in real life, I felt more supported and could start my life again from the ground up.
What has been your biggest accomplishment as an artist?
I’m not very far in my career as an artist, as I’m still pretty young and just starting out. But, I think getting into college to study art was a big step. My previous plan for my future was to be an engineer, which I would have hated. After I left home, I learned that I didn’t get accepted into the college I was planning on going to for many years. After many months, I was able to find a college with a good art program in my area. It was a big leap for me, because my parents never supported art careers for any of their kids. To be able to change my career path to something I really enjoy, and to go to college for it is an amazing feeling.
How can we continue to support trans artists?
Reblog their art! While likes are appreciated, reblogs spread their art across the platform, and help them gain some popularity and more opportunities. I also enjoy getting nice comments on my art through my asks and in the replies! If the artists have merchandise or do commissions, consider supporting them by taking part in them (or at least boost their posts about things that can help them make 💰).
With this being the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion, what does Pride mean to you?
The 💛 that I have seen in the LGBTQ+ community is unparalleled. In most spaces, I feel like my existence is mostly just tolerated or tokenized. It’s only been within the community that I not only feel like my identity is tolerated or noticed, but celebrated! I recently have been able to surround myself with members of the community, and I’ve never felt more respected and 💛 in my life. Pride keeps this community alive and thriving, and that means so much to me.
You have such great resileince, Elliot. You’re going to be a great illustrator and comic artist. We’re 🙌 for you. Tumblr, who are some other LGBTQIA+ artists we should know about? Use the #tumblrpride to share.

Pride Spotlight: bklyn boihood
Hey Tumblr! During the entire month for Pride 2019, we’ll be highlighting some amazing groups and individuals who are creating dope spaces for the LGBTQIA+ community. First up @bklynboihood, bklyn boihood is a collective that seeks to create spaces for queer and trans bois* of color in 🗽. Let’s jump right in.
Your mission is to create spaces for Black and brown queer and trans bois* to cultivate stories, dreams and creative work. Why are these spaces so important? Why aren’t we 👀 them more often?
Our mission is centered on black and queer bois*. At a time, there were very few spaces that celebrated boihood in all of the manifestations we witnessed on a day-to-day basis. As we continue to understand how lack of visual representation impacts mental health, we know it’s critical to 🙌 black and queer bois because mainstream media has failed to do so. Mainstream media is a part of a larger institution, and any institution as we know has deep ties to white supremacy. We don’t 👀 more dynamic platforms for black queer bois simply because white supremacy is a tool for eraser and that pervasive violence exists in all institutions.
Black and brown queer and trans folks created the LGBTQIA+ culture that we know today. That is #BlackExcellence365. Unfortunately we’re not 👀 the right representation. How can we change that?
Power must be shifted. Do you have black queer and trans bois within your organization? Are they decision makers? If you’re a funder, are you using your platform to funnel fiscal support to organizations that center queer and trans black bois? Representation comes at a cost, often emotional labor, that in which we do not have the capacity to hold. So, are you leveraging power to hold the multiple and complex identities in which you wish to include? Inclusivity is never enough. Liberation is beyond inclusion. In order for us to to be free we must dismantle and center those are most at risk of being erased.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. People forget that it was Black and brown queer homeless youths who started this movement. How can we continue to honor them?
Honor them with your platforms, honor them with your funding, honor them by including them in the decision-making regarding their own representation, honor them beyond mere symbolism and move in solidarity by dismantling systems that wish to keep them out.
Thank you bklyn boihood for all the work you do work for the community. Tumblr, how are you supporting organizations during Pride 2019? Use the #tumblrpride to share.

Happy Pride 2019, Tumblr!
There are so many ways to 🙌 this beautiful month! Pride parades and festivals and marches will take place all over the U.S. to elevate our LGBTQIA+ selves, friends, and family. Your Tumblr dashboards deserve to feel just as commemorative, so all month long we’re going to be highlighting amazing LGBTQIA+ Tumblrs for you to follow.
As we 🙌, we also want to remember the serious event from which Pride has evolved. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Stonewall Riots, a series of political protests that began at The Stonewall Inn in 🗽. Young Black and brown LGBTQIA+ people—particularly trans POC—were the first to stand up and protest against the police brutality and inhumane treatment of people within their community. They deserve to be remembered, respected, and honored.
And so, this year, our theme is “Educate. Advocate. 🙌.” We’re sharing resources and information about the LGBTQIA+ community to help educate those who are not as knowledgeable about the history of the community. We’re advocating for the community by providing links to helpful resources, small businesses owned by LGBTQIA+ folks, and non-profits to support. And, of course, we want you to 🙌 who you are. Through that, we’ll be spotlighting non-profit organizations, LGBTQIA+ artists on Tumblr, and more throughout the month right here on @action. There are so many wonderful LGBTQIA+ Tumblrs out there, and we want to continue to support and uplift them.
There’s also a little bit of fun added across the platform. 👀 the Tumblr “T” up at the top on the left on desktop web? Hover your 🐁 and 👀 it cycle through different LGBTQIA+ flag colors, including the traditional LGBTQ+ 🌈 flag, trans flag, non-binary flag, genderqueer flag, lesbian flag, POC LGBTQ+ flag and more. Using the app? Open up the sticker drawer and find some of those Pride flag in sticker form to use however you 👀 fit.
We want to know how and who you’re educating, advocating, and 🥂 this month. Is it you? Your parents? Your best friend? Is there a small business owner we should know about? Make a post about ‘em! Make sure to tag your post with #Tumblr Pride so the whole community can find it.
Stay safe and stay kind, Tumblr. ❤️
As the San Francisco rock scene grew in the 1960s, posters were commissioned by the concert promoter Bill Graham for shows at popular venues such as the Fillmore Auditorium. David Singer produced more posters for Graham than any other artist, designing 75 posters from 1969 to 1990.[1] Although he had an unusual background for a psychedelic poster artist—a childhood spent in rural Pennsylvania, a stint in the Navy, and marketing work for companies in the Financial District of San Francisco—he went on to take his place alongside giants of the genre such as Wes Wilson and Victor Moscoso.
Singer’s most formative influences came from his family, particularly his adoptive mother, Dorothy, who went to art school and hung her paintings around the 🏠. Another important influence was his great aunt Flossy, who kept scrapbooks that left a strong impression on Singer, who remembers flipping through pages of pictures arranged thematically, including double-page spreads of cats and dogs. Singer soon became a “magazine freak,” frantically cutting pictures from magazines and creating collages that he later referred to as “visual poems.”[2] After showing a portfolio containing his best collage work to Graham in 1969, he was immediately commissioned for a series of concert posters.
Although this poster for the Fillmore West’s closing week in 1971 was actually printed after the week of shows ended, it is considered one of Singer’s masterpieces. A strange scene appears in 🆒 blue and black in the center of the composition—a 🐈 dancing on a 💤 🐶 below a grainy photograph of Saturn, with a haunting pair of feline eyes in the background. ✋-lettered, curvilinear text appears above and below the central collage, providing details about the week, including the names of 17 different bands. At left and right, swirling, bird-like shapes appear, mirroring the curving forms in the elaborate bedspread design underneath the 🐶 and the white streak down the center of the slumbering canine’s face.
Although lacking the bright, intense colors and intertwining of text and image typically found in other psychedelic posters, Singer’s design is similarly liberated from the traditional restrictions of advertising and induces a reflective process. The viewer is encouraged to spend time deciphering the fluid, dynamic letters and comprehending the bizarre imagery. Although the poster evokes the hallucinatory experience that often accompanied psychedelic light shows and rock 🎶, the experience becomes part of a larger philosophical questioning about the universe and the nature of reality. The 🐈—a familiar, domestic creature—takes on a spiritual, cosmic dimension, arousing slight laughter but also becoming an enduring and poetic symbol of the ineffable.

Dear Cecilia Chung,
You have spent decades fighting for rights and protections for transgender people and people living with HIV/AIDS. You are an inspiration for younger generations of trans activists. You are tough as nails and a tireless advocate for marginalized communities. This 💌 is dedicated to you, Cecilia, in gratitude for all of your work.
As a young Asian American trans person, I struggled to find role models. So often in mainstream media, trans women and trans women of color, in particular, are portrayed as victims, jokes, or evil doers. I was hungry for positive representations of who trans people could be: leaders, survivors, unapologetically out and proud advocates.
I just wanted proof that Asian American trans people have been here. That we’ve been here the whole time. That we’ve been killing the game and shaping history. I’m grateful that, in you, I have found this magnificent representation.
After coming out as trans, you experienced job discrimination, violence, and homelessness. As an Asian immigrant trans woman with HIV, you have witnessed first-✋ how transphobia and HIV stigma keep people at the margins. You’ve taken these dehumanizing experiences and transformed them into fuel for human and civil rights work.

APAHM Spotlight: Asian American Federation
As part of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we’re highlighting some amazing organizations that are positively impacting the community. Asian American Federation is a pan-Asian nonprofit leadership organization that represents and supports a network of 70 Asian American community service organizations in 🗽. They’re focusing on mental health needs in the Asian American community, as a whole, as it’s been affecting a lot of people in the community. We sat down with Deputy Director Joo Han.
The Asian/Pacific Islander community is not monolithic. What are some common misconceptions about this ethnic group?
The Asian American community comprises 16 ethnic groups (including the Arab community who are included in our research) — that speak over 36 Asian languages.
The model minority myth really obscures the diversity and need in the community. For example, Asians are the poorest racial group in 🗽, with 25 percent living in poverty (a rate that grew by 44 percent from 2000 to 2016). The majority, or 70 percent, are immigrants, with 70 percent also having limited English proficiency. If you disaggregate the data, you’ll also 👀 that some Asian groups, like Cambodian, Laotian, and Hmong, have higher status dropout rates (the percent of 16-24 year olds who aren’t enrolled in school and don’t have a high school diploma) than non-Hispanic Whites.
Mental Health is a journey that many of us go through. Unfortunately, many people of color do not have the accessibility for mental health/resources. How is the stigma towards mental health hurtful in the Asian/Pacific Islander community?
Deep cultural stigma is one of the greatest barriers to accessing mental health services in the Asian American community.
A study found that even though a higher percentage of Asian American high school and college students reported experiencing depressive symptoms compared to their White counterparts, Asian Americans are the least likely group to report, seek, and receive medical help for depressive symptoms due to cultural stigma. This stigma stems from the belief that mental healthcare is “only for crazy people” — or the seriously ill — and comes from honor/shame cultures that suppress negative experiences in order to “save face” or not be a burden to others.
Also, Asian Americans, who bear the additional burdens of the model minority myth and imposter syndrome, can further feel they are “weak” or “inadequate” when they struggle with stress, anxiety, depression, and so forth, which may deter them from reaching out for help.
How can we de-stigmatize mental health needs?
One of the best ways that we can de-stigmatize mental health needs is to develop and spread mental health literacy. Part of spreading mental health literacy also comes from sharing our own stories about how mental illness has touched our lives, whether personally or through a family member or friend, so that we can normalize mental healthcare as we would physical healthcare.
Pictured: AAF’s Executive Director Jo-Ann Yoo & 🗽 Council members. Photography courtesy of the Asian American Federation
How can people continue to support the Asian/Pacific Islander community?
🔌 into Asian-led, Asian-serving community-based organizations where you live. There is tremendous need for Asian Americans who can commit their time, expertise, and resources to serving the fastest-growing population in the U.S. And really commit—by volunteering to teach a class in something you’re skilled at, joining a board, or offering to hold a fundraiser. By serving the community, you’re actually investing in resources that will uplift you, your family, and the community as a whole.
Thank you for your time, Joo Han. We appreciate all your work with the Asian American Federation. Tumblr, how do you handle your mental health as a person of color? Use the hashtag #APAHM to share your story.
For nearly 30 years, GAPIMNY (formerly Gay Asian Pacific Islander Men of NY) has been creating events and programs, documenting queer and trans AAPI history, and advocating for rights and visibility.
Founded in 1990, GAPIMNY offered critical support and community to AAPIs experiencing racism and homophobia in the midst of an HIV/AIDS crisis.
In 1991, GAPIMNY, Asian Lesbians on the East Coast, and other groups protested the racist musical Miss Saigon on Broadway. GAPIMNY played a major role in educating white LGBTQ people about yellowface and racist stereotypes.

To get things started we left St Johns Yacht Club marina south of Charleston on Monday May 1- timiqng for the slack tide to carry us through the rocky and narrow Elliot Cut. Our hope had been to anchor off the point of Fort Sumter, however the high winds and waves prevented anchoring. Plus it was early and the museum would not be open.
CRUISING BY FORT SUMTER

The review of Georgetown as an anchorage warned of muddy bottom and silting for poor holding. We gave it a good try; it took three tries to get a good setting on our anchor. Or so we thought- several hours later we checked our location and could tell the anchor was dragging; the boats and docks appeared much closer!! in the dark we hear a voice from the city “day Dock” offering a hand with lines moving in to the dock?
The dock was posted as “no overnight stays” but with the storm fast approaching we decided to pull anchor and move to tie up on the free dock. Quickly secured our lines by 11:15 pm, and it started pouring and lightening! Later Dave commented that one engine would not start making docking a bit tricky. Earlier the generator stopped working- Dave will be trouble shooting for a fuel issue.
GEORGETOWN MORNING WALK
Next morning we walked around town and had breakfast with out having to drop our dinghy in the water! Bonus!! The town is smaller than Charleston and Savanah, but proud of its history. Disappointed that both the Rice Museum and Maritime Museum were with in walking distance, but did not open until 11 am.
At the recommendation of a tour guide on the docks, we ate at Thomas Café – Dave ordered the Shrimp and crab omelet with salsa and grits. Notice the vintage ice box, stools and tile floor! This is not shabby chic- just hard working original café!
Cute- one patron left the dog on the bench while she went in for coffee- of course brought out water first!
The weather cleared and made for a great day to head to our next anchorage with the rising tide. There are a few shallow spots in the next few miles and the additional depth of high tide will be a benefit! Head out across Winyah Bay, north on the Waccamaw River, to our anchorage at Enterprise Creek Oxbow. The scenery has changed dramatically- no longer the salt marshes of Georgia; instead we have hard wood trees, grasses and Cyprus trees. The river water is littered with hyacinths just waiting to bloom. With this change in trees, the osprey, eagles, turtles and other birds are more abundant.
At night the vultures roosted near our boat.
We took the dingy out to explore the dark waters- The tanic roots of the Cyprus give a dark color to the water. Great for reflection photos! It was a very calm night, Clear sky with lots of stars. Also lots of noises in the night- a couple times we shined our powerful spot light into the shore to see if there were eyes shining in the dark. (yes, a few!) In the morning pulled anchor and had to leave this lovely anchorage. Thanks for taking a few minutes and reading to the end of the post! Hope you enjoyed, and may be planning your own trip along the ICW some day.
