This is it. Generative AI, as a commercial tech phenomenon, has reached its apex. The hype is evaporating. The tech is too unreliable, too often. The vibes are terrible. The air is escaping from the bubble. To me, the question is more about whether the air will rush out all at once, sending the tech sector careening downward like a balloon that someone blew up, failed to tie off properly, and let go—or more slowly, shrinking down to size in gradual sputters, while emitting embarrassing fart sounds, like a balloon being deliberately pinched around the opening by a smirking teenager. But come on. The jig is up. The technology that was at this time last year being somberly touted as so powerful that it posed an existential threat to humanity is now worrying investors because it is apparently incapable of generating passable marketing emails reliably enough. We’ve had at least a year of companies shelling out for business-grade generative AI, and the results—painted as shinily as possible from a banking and investment sector that would love nothing more than a new technology that can automate office work and creative labor—are one big “meh.” As a Bloomberg story put it last week, “Big Tech Fails to Convince Wall Street That AI Is Paying Off.” From the piece: Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc. had one job heading into this earnings season: show that the billions of dollars they’ve each sunk into the infrastructure propelling the artificial intelligence boom is translating into real sales. In the eyes of Wall Street, they disappointed. Shares in Google owner Alphabet have fallen 7.4% since it reported last week. Microsoft’s stock price has declined in the three days since the company’s own results. Shares of Amazon — the latest to drop its earnings on Thursday — plunged by the most since October 2022 on Friday. Silicon Valley hailed 2024 as the year that companies would begin to deploy generative AI, the type of technology that can create text, images and videos from simple prompts. This mass adoption is meant to finally bring about meaningful profits from the likes of Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot. The fact that those returns have yet to meaningfully materialize is stoking broader concerns about how worthwhile AI will really prove to be. Meanwhile, Nvidia, the AI chipmaker that soared to an absurd $3 trillion valuation, is losing that value with every passing day—26% over the last month or so, and some analysts believe that’s just the beginning. These declines are the result of less-than-stellar early results from corporations who’ve embraced enterprise-tier generative AI, the distinct lack of killer commercial products 18 months into the AI boom, and scathing financial analyses from Goldman Sachs, Sequoia Capital, and Elliot Management, each of whom concluded that there was “too much spend, too little benefit” from generative AI, in the words of Goldman, and that it was “overhyped” and a “bubble” per Elliot. As CNN put it in its report on growing fears of an AI bubble, Some investors had even anticipated that this would be the quarter that tech giants would start to signal that they were backing off their AI infrastructure investments since “AI is not delivering the returns that they were expecting,” D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria told CNN. The opposite happened — Google, Microsoft and Meta all signaled that they plan to spend even more as they lay the groundwork for what they hope is an AI future. This can, perhaps, explain some of the investor revolt. The tech giants have responded to mounting concerns by doubling, even tripling down, and planning on spending tens of billions of dollars on researching, developing, and deploying generative AI for the foreseeable future. All this as high profile clients are canceling their contracts. As surveys show that overwhelming majorities of workers say generative AI makes them less productive. As MIT economist and automation scholar Daron Acemoglu warns, “Don’t believe the AI hype.”

So I won a signed Umbrella Academy poster from Netflix, and it finally came in the mail!! I was so stoked to open it, but I think I need some deciphering help…

First of all, the poster is sooo good I love it, I went out and bought a frame for it and everything, honestly my first real signed poster so I was just soo excited and wanted to keep it in the best condition.

But if you look closely…

There are only 7 signatures.

There are 8 people on the poster.

I’m assuming the one next to Ritu’s is Elliot’s (Viktors) and the one above Robert’s (Klaus’) face is his. So that leaves Aiden (Fives) signature :((

He’s one of my favourite characters in the show, so I’m disappointed that not all of the cast signed it, maybe he didn’t get to or maybe he doesn’t do signatures? Not sure if anyone knows.

Anywho this isn’t me complaining i’m just like damn where’s my grumpy gramps signature 😩. Ah well, still extremely grateful to have won a poster!!

so. good old, dear old, dead dad reggie can't control a tempermental 4 year old with super powers, so instead of sitting her down with a therapist, he locks her in a noise cancelling room, puts her on mood stabalizers, and forces her only sister to use her super powers to convince her that she doesn't have superpowers. and then, to make matters worse, he leaves her out of everything, makes her feel insignificant, and isolates her from the only people who could possibly understand. and when she finally stops the mood stabalizers, she is manipulated and isolated by a different asshole who was created by her father and his own father. and finally, when she might have been getting a handle on everything, those siblings that she was isolated from and who spent most of their lives ignoring her, isolate her the same way their father did! and they wonder how she is capable of killing pogo, of destroying their home, of hurting allison? they wonder why she is so angry? five is so entrenched in saving the world that he barely notices anyone, klaus is in a sobriety battle, luther is wrapped up in his own trauma and ego, diego is trying to recreate the glory days and get revenge, ben is literally dead but he's trying to help klaus. the only one who paid any sort of attention to vanya before she went on a world ending rampage was allison, but she was also blinded by her own problems (as valid as they were). vanya just wanted to be included.

y'all. i know v is viktor (now :/) but i had just finished e10 of s1 here. i would've been so incredibly stoked to see that they accepted elliot's transition and kept him on and changed his character to reflect that. i still am happy with it, but i don't get to freak out about it now. i don't get to scream and laugh and kick my feet when i see it on screen. i will still feel joy, but it will not be the same and it makes me sad. if i had gotten far enough to see vanya become viktor, don't you think i would've tagged it as viktor? used he/him instead of she/her? been the respectful and accepting person i am? ugh idk.

A new interview with Elizabeth Kilgariff, the executive producer for The Jetty!

Here are some highlights:

She’s travelled through time and space in Doctor Who, ruled England as Queen Victoria and plotted revenge as a woman scorned in Wilderness. But in upcoming BBC crime drama The Jetty, viewers will see star Jenna Coleman in a strikingly different role.

Kilgariff also worked with Jenna on Wilderness!

“With The Jetty, we are seeing Jenna in a completely new role,” Kilgarriff tells DQ. “I don’t think we’ve seen her in this role before. And I hope what was appealing for her and what really does come through is she’s very funny. In amongst the darkness and the deep emotional turmoil, it’s very funny, and she plays that brilliantly. I really hope that this felt like an exciting new space to be in.”

“Working with Jenna is a joy. She’s a real pro, and a delight,” Kilgarriff continues. “And she’s drawn to roles that hold many layers. Obviously on Wilderness, that was the case, but Ember Manning is a very different role. There are lots of different layers in terms of what she’s feeling, what she’s hiding – and that’s what she is so clever at doing. She’s very aware of all those things and yet able to connect with the audience so you are with her as she goes on a really big journey. There’s a lot that happens.

Ruby Stokes will play Ember’s (Jenna Coleman’s character) teenage daughter, Amelia Bullmore will play her mother, and Weruche Opia will play a podcast journalist. The show also stars Archie Renaux, Laura Marcus, Bo Bragason, Tom Glynn-Carney, Matthew McNulty, Ralph Ineson, David Ajala, Nina Barker-Francis, Miya Ocego, Elliot Cowan, Shannon Watson, Arthur Hughes and Dominic Coleman, but their roles in the show have not been described yet.

But with a never-ending carousel of television detectives, what will make Ember stand out not just to UK audiences but around the world?

“It’s the Jenna factor, and she’s a very relatable central character,” Kilgarriff says. “But the ambition with this has always been, yes, it’s UK-set, it’s very much a British drama, but it has been made in a way that perhaps is a bit more heightened. How we tell the story isn’t quite as domestic, so it feels like something that will perform well internationally. It’s very much in that Sharp Objects, Top of the Lake space that feels like it will appeal to audiences around the world.”

Elliot Page's trans drama film to make Aussie premiere

Actor Elliot Page’s first film as a trans man, queer homecoming drama Close to You, is making its Australian premiere in Sydney next week.

Close to You is screening as part of the 2024 Queer Screen Film Fest in Sydney, which starts on August 28.

In the film, Sam (Elliot Page) returns home to visit his suburban family for the first time since his transition, to a mixed reception. En route, Sam also runs into high school crush Katherine and feelings from their unresolved past begin to bubble to the surface.

The film’s screenplay featured no dialogue, which was improvised by the actors. This meant some very long takes, Elliot recalled, including one that lasted almost an hour.

“[We filmed] all of these things that might not end up in the movie, but in some ways it is there. Because the stuff we would have done together that you don’t see is underneath that next moment you’re seeing, which is what ends up in the film,” Elliot explained to NBC News.

The actor said the film has “intense and emotional” moments but was also “cathartic and healing” for him to make.

“But for me, it was mostly actually just such a joy to create in this way,” Elliot said.

“The moments that were challenging and emotional were also cathartic and healing in many ways. It was really one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

Elliot Page came out as trans in 2020

Elliot Page came out as a trans man in late 2020, and he opened up about his journey to that point in memoir Pageboy last year. The actor said he couldn’t have done Close to You before taking that step.

“To work in this way, to be on a set and to be completely open and present and comfortable and have a solid foundation to exist in a place, to be able to improvise, to be able to disappear, to be able to really feel like you’re existing as the character in those spaces, it just actually wouldn’t have been possible before,” he told NBC News.

“I kind of sensed that from the moment we started doing it, which I’d say made the process even just like extra exhilarating and exciting for me, just the sensation of waking up every day and being so stoked to go to set.

“I didn’t have that level of comfort and solid foundation and ability to be present before, and I don’t think it would have been possible or enjoyable for me before.”

Queer Screen Film Fest is from the organisers of the Mardi Gras Film Festival. The second iteration of the now-annual festival starts on August 28, with in-person screenings in Sydney and on-demand streaming.

It's near midnight and Elliot can't sleep. Rather than toss and turn, he brushes a kiss to Isla's temple and heads to the small living room of their cabin. If this was Center Hill, he might've cracked open a beer, grabbed a pack of smokes and sat on the front steps of the trailer. But there's no beer, and no smokes, and, more importantly, they're thousands of miles from Atlanta.

He stokes the fire in the living room, watching the embers burn back to life before taking a seat. Elliot studies the dancing flames as he considers a whole host of things. But, at the forefront of his mind is the news they'd shared with their family earlier tonight. Another child. They hadn't even found their first, and here they were, preparing for a second.

Elliot feels a bitterness he didn't know could exist alongside a muted joy. Because it feels wrong to be happy. It feels wrong to be excited. It all feels wrong. He's lost in thought but catches another door creaking open. Elliot pokes the fire again, watching the orange pillars leap and swirl as he gives a slight nod in Ryan's direction. "Couldn't sleep," he murmurs, the statement unnecessary but used to break the silence. "And Hunt stole my smokes last week." Well stole, is a bit of a stretch.
