Now, I'm remembering that weird Lindsay Ellis fan who hovered my blog for a few days trying to prove I was a bad person and all they could find was that I wasn't on the Zack Snyder hate bandwagon lmao.

Forced, Spy Movie.
Tumblr media
Argylle would benefit from a $150 million budget chop. Same cast, I thought they were great (Except the handsome train dude and the henchman carl(os?). I could not tell them apart.)
They're going to make like four or five more of these. Dear God, help us. This felt like forced fun. It feels like having to laugh at someone's constant unfunny jokes. I fell asleep through so much of it, but I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything or that I had missed out on something.
I should've known something was up when the trailers were all vastly different. I didn't even know about the actual tie-in book attempt until I went to the bookstore a week ago and saw it.
The whole rollout for this movie has been weird. Why does this need to be tied to books that aren't real? Why was the cat so important? I'm going to assume I slept through the reveal that the McGuffin was attached to its collar.
Why does a small, small-town bookshop have endless mint condition leather chairs? I could hardly focus on the scene because where are they getting the money for every reading event attendee to have their own leather chair?
Dua Lipa's wig! They didn't just wanna brush it?
I was hoping the cat was going to be the actual spy.
Explain the whirlybird thing and why it's supposed to be funny.
This movie and Rebel Moon have the same energy. You're telling me everything to come and not putting any energy into the thing you're actively making. These are very obvious cash grabs.

Hi Sarah - thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts re: writing, I always get so much from your posts. Would you be willing to talk a little about how you outline a long chaptered fic? Do you usually have an idea of how long you want the story to be before you outline? Are there beats you try to hit, do you have a specific outlining method, do you always write an outline before you start a long story?
Hiiii, Ellie!! Yes, I’d be happy to help.
I do outline all of my multi-chaptered fics. I was asked about my outlining process in this ask, so feel free to check that out as well. In that one, I mention the snowflake method, which is what I use to outline most of my fanfiction, but I’m going to use this ask as an excuse to talk about how I outline more complicated fics and original fiction.
Some of y’all already know that before I got into the BL fandom, I was (unsuccessfully) writing original fiction, and when outlining original fiction, I always use Blake Snyder’s beat sheet. I’ve copied a visual representation below, but I highly recommend clicking the link above, which will give you a run-down on each of the specific elements.
Tumblr media
This is by far the best plotting method I've ever come across and you can find plenty of resources specifically geared towards this method online. It was originally created for screenwriting, but has since been adapted for novels as well, although I think the original works just fine.
For fanfiction, sometimes this beat sheet is too detailed and often it can be a bit difficult to adapt it for romance-based works, so I usually just simplify it down to a few core elements. I’ll use Best Laid Plans to illustrate this as it’s my most recent fic and it’s still fresh on my mind:
Catalyst: Boeing asks Akk out on a date
Break Into Two: Akk feels too sexually inexperienced to date the campus playboy, so he asks Aye to teach him
Fun and Games: Aye teaches Akk
Midpoint (AKA the moment everything changes): Akk realizes he has real feelings for Aye
Bad Guys Close In: Akk tries to win Aye over
All is Lost: Akk doesn’t think Aye likes him back
Finale: Akk and Aye get together
Obviously, that’s a very simplistic overview—the actual outline is much more in-depth—but I have a lot of fun outlining using this method. It’s like a puzzle and you just fit the pieces where they belong.
To answer your first question about whether I go into a new work knowing how long it’ll be, the answer is no. I make my fics exactly as long as they need to be to tell the story I’m trying to tell and no longer. In fact, Best Laid Plans was originally outlined at 12 chapters, but when it came down to it, it felt more right to end it at 11.
The good thing about fanfiction is that there’s a lot of wiggle room. You don’t have to structure your fic in any particular way, or even at all. But if you like to plan things out beforehand, this is a great tool to use. I highly recommend reading Save the Cat by Blake Synder if you’re interested in learning more because he goes into a lot more detail there. It’s my favorite book on writing ever and I cannot recommend it enough.

canon starter call - open to anyone !
i have a strong urge to write some canon muses, so if you would be interested in writing against any of the canon muses listed under the READ MORE below, please comment/IM me and i can send a starter your way or reply to one of your starters.
i do not require you to know anything about my muse's canon, but i'm more than happy to tell you about it if you ask. i'd be happy to write canon muses against your ocs! also, mixing fandoms is 100% ok with me unless your canon muse is problematic and makes me uncomfy. my canon muses do not have all their memories or relationships from their life unless we plot it, but they will have the same general personality/ambitions.
if you are willing to write against my canon muses but don't care which, just like this post, and i'll take a look at your open starters and/or send you a closed starter at random with a muse i think fits the vibe.
*please don't agree to write against my canon muses if you're one of those picky weirdos that will be up in arms if i don't write a cannon muse exactly how you would.
( if you'd prefer to write against an oc muse only, check this post. )
canon muses i'd like to write: bold = extra big muse rn. strikethrough = exclusive, so not rn.

I really wish people would differentiate
Tumblr media
Honestly, I think one of the things that makes a lot of fandom culture and what not so toxic is the unableness and unwillingness of people to differentiate between "I like this", "This is good" and "People who made this were good people".
Yes, I chose the Howl's Moving Castle gif for a reason. Because it is one of those examples for me. The movie is messy from a storytelling perspective. The movie is also quite bad if you see it as an adaption. Yes, the book is so much better and I adore that darn book series. But also: I love the movie to bits. I just love it. The atmosphere. The characters. Himbo Howl. The soundtrack. Just everything. I adore it. And to me this is not that much of a challenge to think about all of that at once.
But... yeah, fandom discourse often does not work like that, does it? There is a lot of "I like it, therefore it is great and everyone involved with it is an amazing person!" going on. Or "I dislike it, therefore it is bad and everyone involved with it is a scheming villain".
And you see it in so many regards. Be it: "This media disagrees with me politically, therefore it artistically bad". Or: "I like this actor and his roles, therefore he cannot be a rapist." Or: "I love this book and the adaption does not do it justice, hence everyone who made it wanted to attack me personally."
Meanwhile I am sitting there and feeling anxious whenever I criticize something I actually like, because I always gotta fear that some fans are gonna attack me about it, because who am I to dare criticize it.
You know, I really did like Witcher 2 and Witcher 3 as games. I still think there are some issues with the games and that the games really are bad adaptions of the books.
I absolutely do think that Digimon Universe Applimon is not really well written and has way too many filler episodes. Yet, it still very much is my second favorite Digimon season.
I can acknowledge that Christorpher Nolan makes movies that are really good on a technical level - but I still hate each and everyone of those fucking things.
And yes, I absolutely do see that the Fast & Furious movies are brainless, dumb and not even very well done technically. But I have rewatched them more times than I can count.
Also, yes, I am gonna enjoy Castlevania to bits, even though Warren Ellis is a horrible human being and should see some fucking consequences for what he did.
Oh, and also, I absolutely hate Zac Snyder and the movies he makes and think that no matter whether intentionally or not they have some horrible politics. But I also can admit that he seems to be a pretty alright guy, who cares a lot about the people around them and is very fun to work with.
Why is that so hard for people to do? Why? Why can they not distinguish between personal likes or dislikes and... you know... Quality? Or morality? These are different things. You can like something and still think it is pretty darn bad. Just as you can dislike something and admit it is actually darn good.
I mean, dumb example, but: I do love eating at McDonalds from time to time, and you can absolutely get me to leave by serving almost anything from the French cuisine. I will still readily admit that the latter is the better quality food AND also more healthy.

So, as much as I enjoy making bookmarks for popular books (that sell and pay my Etsy fees), I also love making bookmarks for less well known books.
KOTW (pictured) is not what I’d consider underrated, but underrated books I have made bookmarks for include The Falconer series by Elizabeth May, Poison Study by Maria V Snyder, and None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney.
What books do you wish had more merch options available?

@pizzee Thank you for the tagging me to join in on the TV show tag game! I have the exact opposite problem to you in that I watch way too many shows. There's so many I've watched in the last few months alone that I've absolutely loved (Andor, Severance, Poker Face, The Sandman, The Last of Us, Vox Machina, etc etc) but for this I think I'll stick with the ones that I've connected to and cherished the most of the years. It wasn't required or even asked for but all of you are getting Backstory™ for these whether you like it or not. Anyway, in no particular order, here they are:
Moon Knight: Wow, I like the show that is now my defining personality trait? Shocker. But, no, seriously, I don't think I've latched onto a show or group of characters so quickly in my life, or so intensely before. This show has (as of posting this) made me write almost 200k worth of fic about it. I got bloody Discord because of this show because the brainrot was so intense. I am part of a fandom community for really the first time in my life because of this show. It's no exaggeration to say that this show has had a huge impact on me; the dinosaurs got off easy in comparison.
Lucifer: I started watching this show when Season 2 premiered way back in 2016 and I was there watching it up until the end. It was silly and emotional and heartwarming and campy, and the characters were amazing (do I own shirts that Ella Lopez wore in the show? Yes, yes I do.) and the music was excellent. This show loved the heck out of metaphors, and I am not immune to that. Or Tom Ellis.
The Owl House: I used to be obsessed with owls when I was younger (the 'Owls of Ga'Hoole' movie was my jam, and—I'm sorry Zack Snyder directed that??? What the f—ahem, sorry, as I was saying:), and while that particular interest faded over the years, I do remember I was drawn to this show because of the name, and then the premise, and then the characters (Hunter gets a gold star for making me go "argh this guy is annoying" to "I would die for him" within a span of two appearances), and then so, so many things. I've loved a lot of cartoons, many of which deserve a spot on this list, but this one just hits so many of the right notes for me. I will die mad that Disney robbed us of a full season 3, but I will always cherish what we got.
Adventure Time: The first show I ever binged in full, and essentially what kickstarted my career as a Tumblrite (my logo was Marceline for many a year—if you find my *gag* Wattpad account it'll still be there). I still have doodles for this show from when I was 14 (many of which were Bubbline, which was also my first ship). I am the silly little Tumblr fool I am today because of this show.
Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes: I used to watch this show on TV as a kid, random episodes here and there, never enough to truly understand what was going on but enough to know the characters. It was how I first came to know Marvel, long before I even liked superheroes, and it was the reason I watched 'The Avengers', which in turn was the reason I went and saw 'Age of Ultron' (the first MCU movie I ever saw at the cinema) and then, well, the rest is history. But it all started here, with this show. (Also, let's be real, the theme song slaps.)
Doctor Who: specifically the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor's seasons, though I love Ten's as well (even if 'Midnight' and the following Library episodes—episodes I now adore—scared me off from the show for almost 7 years). I might have also been a little in love with Clara. This show has made me sob with true and utter grief (musical motifs that will make you cry without warning and other secrets your Doctor won't tell you!) and also made me feel like I'm taking acid. It's got the range darling.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: I've watched this whole thing three times. It's just…It's good. It's really good. The world, the characters, the animation/visuals, the god damn narrative. I'm still in awe of how masterful this anime was. I aspire to this level of multilayered, intelligent storytelling… and also the level of comedy. It too has the range. And god I love when shows can do that well.
Bee and Puppycat: I used to watch the YouTube series for this (along with 'Bravest Warriors' and a bunch of other Cartoon Hangover shorts) as a tween and it's just a very fond, cosy memory for me. And now there's the Netflix version and it's been wonderful to not only get more of what was already there, but more to the story in general. My childhood self is being tucked into bed and wrapped in a blanket, content in the knowledge that things left unfinished are not always over.
That really is the tip of the iceberg of all the shows I've loved over the years but we'd be here for a month of Sundays if I went on about all them, so I'll take my leave now and pass on the baton. I'm going to tag @yellowocaballero, @mockspector, @theophagism and @aster-o1d. Have fun! :3

Tumblr media
Eden II TP - Kenny Wroten
A blistering critique of digital media and a kaleidoscopic depiction of consumer culture, Eden II is both fanciful and satirical, a combination of deft cartooning and virtuosic storytelling.
In the grungy, punk-inflected world Kenny Wroten creates, a cast of disaffected young characters struggle to find their purpose in life. Faced with a dying Earth and numbingly useless jobs, protagonists Ellis and Dr. Otis Heck invent an immersive virtual reality game, Eden II. But when Heck betrays Ellis and sells the game to a mysterious corporation, the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur. As each chapter highlights a new character in the ensemble, the game's impact grows as the world becomes consumed by fantasy.

So when the Police is looking for a culprit, they know where to knock first.
The hardboiled brutal land of the Mobsters and Gauchos continues to unfold, as bestselling international author Rodolfo Santullo and THE OLD GUARD superstar artist Leandro Fernandez present a new set of blood-soaked Noir tales, a must-read for fans of gritty crime fiction.

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

The Knight Captain Is The New Princess To Be GN Vol 1 - Yakinikuteishoku
In this shojo rom-com tale, a dashing female bodyguard pretends to be engaged to her childhood friend, the prince... but is their fake betrothal really just an act to him? Christina, a.k.a. "Lady Chris," was born into a noble family and treated more or less like a boy growing up. Now a dashing young woman, Chris is not only captain of the imperial guards-she personally protects Prince Leonardo, who has been a dear friend since childhood. When his father, the king, demands he find a suitable girl to marry, Leo insists that he's already found one: Chris! Chris is shocked, but figures that Leo doesn't really love her like that; it's probably just some ploy to keep the king happy. Chris decides to play along, but as the charade goes on, she starts to wonder if maybe her princely pal has actually fallen for her!
Tumblr media
Memoirs Of A Man In His Pajamas TP - Paco Roca
Spain's answer to Seinfeld, these observational, relatable autobio vignettes by Spanish cartoonist Paco Roca poke fun at the vexing tribulations of modern life. At 40, cartoonist Paco Roca has finally achieved his childhood dream - to spend all day at home in his pajamas! However, his blissful, loungewear-clad reverie is beset with a host of mundane problems: He dreads small talk with "the world's biggest bore," but his excuses and white lies are finally catching up with him. When a good friend breaks up, taking either side could lead to social disaster.
The simple mission to change his train ticket descends into an impossibly complicated, Kafka-esque affair. And worst of all, his partner keeps hanging the toilet paper roll the wrong way! In the vein of sitcoms like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Roca's comic vignettes brilliantly satirize the pesky pitfalls of modern-day life. Like most of us, Roca's alter ego just wants to be liked and to do the right thing, but finds that through crippling indecision, cowardly behavior, and the absurd machinations of the universe, he is usually thwarted. The ensuing situations he finds himself embroiled in are as hilarious as they are often painfully relatable.

THE PLOT HOLES are a squad of fictional warriors who transport themselves into the pages of other books, using their unique skills to save the plots in order to stop them from being destroyed. And Cliff is their newest recruit, a comic creator who's just realized his world isn't real-in fact, it's a complete fiction that literally exists inside a novel. The other members are misfits like him, pulled from unpublished books that couldn't be saved: a manga samurai, a barbarian tiger, a kid from a comic strip, and a vampire assassin. Outclassed by the other members, Cliff sets out to prove his worth to The Plot Holes as they fight to save as many books as possible.
