Dark, disturbing, and transgressive fiction
A list of books that deal with shocking, depraved, or taboo subjects. Many of them contain themes of violence, sexual perversion, or extreme psychological distress, so reader discretion is advised. Please proceed with caution, be mindful of your own limits, and maintain a well-balanced reading diet. This is a selection from my list of 160 books in this category that I published on my website, complete with links to Goodreads and Wikipedia for each title.

Transgressive Book Club?
I would love to start a transgressive book club (for people 18+) because I love transgressive books and want to be able to talk to someone about them, but I feel a little uncomfortable about recommending them to friends for obvious reasons. But also I have no idea how to start a book club or get people to join it or where I would even find people who would be interested. It would be authors like Chuck Palahniuk, Scott Heim, Alissa Nutting, Dennis Cooper, Kola Boof, Irvine Welsh, etc. (Maybe even JT Leroy if we feel like engaging in some interesting discourse.) Also some transgressive classics like Lolita, Naked Lunch, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, and the like. So if there are any adults who would be interested in this, please let me know! Because I'd really like to do this.

Writer's game
I got tagged by @reallyhatethiswebsite thank you <3
I'm tagging @coreene @beesht @littleplasticrat @magthara @dodorimo no pressure
When did you start writing?
Eight or nine. Just a couple of pages, I think, it was a fantasy / sci-fi piece. My mother adored it and got me to the local writing club. They said they are concerned about my mental health.
Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?
Ha. No, actually. I like horror, I like transgressive fiction, dark fiction, dark fantasy, experimental fiction, sci-fi / cyberpunk, and that's exactly the genres I write in.
Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?
I fancy myself (I am not) a mixture of Irvine Welsh and Clive Barker. Those are the two I could re-read forever. Other notable mentions include Bret Easton Ellis, Anthony Burgess, Laird Barron, Cormac McCarthy... yeah, all men, I know. I think about that a lot. I don't have many reassuring thoughts on this point.
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
Ah, just my study. I work there, I write there, I eat there, I live there. It's scandinavian style, white walls, no decorations.
What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?
I am discipline kind of gal. Sit down and write in total silence. Grind through. Embrace the pain. Pain purifies.
Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?
Sex, violence, power, money, parental abuse, humanity's inability to escape itself, how reality and fantasy intertwine and are they really that far apart, politics, left vs right, class warfare, toxic masculinity, breeding / inheritance / children, sadomasochism (NOT modern BDSM culture, that's something very different), sexual assault, sexual abuse, toxic relationships, gender wars, drugs, addictions, suicide.
They don't surprise me anymore, lol.
What is your reason for writing?
Not enough dark fiction in the world. Never enough. More.
Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?
My favourite one is when the reader shares their own experience, gives me a bit of insight of their own psyche and why they reacted to my words in a certain way. I am very interested in people. I am eager to hear all the life stories.
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
As someone adequate and friendly and approachable. Idk actually how I come across... feel free to tell me.
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
Naturalism, keeping tension and plot-building.
How do you feel about your own writing?
Some pieces I re-read many years after, some pieces I consider flops, I have strengths, I have weaknesses, I have moments when I am super insecure and moments when I am super proud. So ambivalent, I guess.

TV’s number one crime-solving nun is back in action—and will be celebrating the holidays this winter.
Filming has started, in and around the Cotswolds, on the fourth series of the BBC Studios drama Sister Boniface Mysteries, created by Jude Tindall. It will air next year on BritBox International and on UKTV’s U&Drama in the UK. It has also been announced that the show will return for another feature-length Christmas special this December, written by Tindall and directed by Paul Gibson. See photos of Lorna Watson, who plays Sister Boniface, on the set and in the Christmas special above and below.
“It’s brilliant to be back with the gang for series four,” said Watson in a statement. “I feel very lucky to be part of such a lovely show and can’t wait to get cracking, solving crime in the Cotswolds sunshine.”

In addition to Watson as the Vespa driving, crime-solving, Catholic nun, also returning are Max Brown as DI Sam Gillespie, Jerry Iwu as DS Felix Livingstone, and Ami Metcalf as WPC Peggy Button. The Series 4 guest cast includes Les Dennis, Katherine Kingsley, Martyn Ellis, Mina Anwar, Ed Birch, and Daniel Laurie.
The Christmas special features the Great Slaughter Amateur Dramatics Society (GSADS) pantomime. This year it’s Cinderella and with the appointment of a celebrity director the pressure is on to deliver their biggest and best performance yet. Rehearsals begin, but soon cast members start dropping like flies. Can Sister Boniface catch the killer before they strike again? Will GSADS give the public the festive theatrical treat they deserve? And, most importantly, can Sam and Felix pull off a polka in a pantomime horse?
Also coming up in the series, a bucking bronco goes haywire on the set of a game show, a killer scarecrow stalks the streets of Great Slaughter, the Scottish invade, a femme fatale drops to her death in a stunt gone wrong, and CC Lowsley (Robert Dawes) has arranged some team building. Meanwhile, Reverend Mother Adrian (Carolyn Pickles) is keeping a secret, and it could tear the Sisters lives apart.
“I’m thrilled that TV’s favourite forensic nun is returning for a fourth series. The alchemy created by Jude, Lorna and our wonderful cast and Midlands crew continues to delight viewers worldwide,” Neil Irvine, Executive Producer at BBC Studios said. “This series sees a serial killer on the loose at the Christmas Pantomime and a threat to the convent itself. I can’t wait for the audience to find out if this is the end for St Vincent’s…”
Sister Boniface Mysteries is made by BBC Studios Drama Productions as a co-production for BritBox International and UKTV. The script producer is Dawn Coulson-Beckett. Executive producers are Neil Irvine for BBC Studios, Stephen Nye and Robert Schildhouse for BritBox International, and Claire Hookway for UKTV.

ok it’s time for elvira’s yearly reading wrap up! best and worst of 2023:
worst:
the cabin at the end of the world, paul tremblay - disappointing. could have been so good but, alas, was not.
the silent patient, alex michaelides - quite possibly my least favourite of the year. people were telling me how shocking it was and how it had a huge plottwist. this plottwist was predictable from PAGE ONE. please.
the grimoire of grave fates - i remember nothing except being bored.
hide, keirsten white - i hate when horror is bad <3
filth, irvine welsh - okok my second attempt at reading irvine welsh. i liked parts of this book but not enough to even slightly enjoy it as a whole.
finnegans wake, james joyce - i wasn’t sure whether this should go in best or worst honestly. such a huge phenomenon, purely because it’s “unreadable”. i still don’t know how to feel.
best:
12 bytes, jeanette winterson - miss winterson can do no wrong in my eyes. brilliant reflections on technology, written beautifully.
new animal, ella baxter - just SUCH a good time!! great novel on grief and sexuality.
the gilded wolves, roshani chokshi - i’m very picky about my fantasy books, but i fell in love with this trilogy so fast. the characters are incredible and diverse, and finding a canonically autistic character meant a lot to me.
tripping arcadia, kit mayquist - creepy, gorgeous, has not left my mind. i can’t even explain it, it is just an Experience. Go read it.
how to sell a haunted house, grady hendrix - FUN HORROR!! HAUNTED HOUSE!! EVIL PUPPET!!
when we lost our heads, heather o’neill - lesbian marie antoinette historical fiction? yes.
no longer human, osamu dazai - gorgeous tale of existence and misery. loved loved this one.
i who have never known men, jacqueline harpman - heartbreaking and real. one of those books i think everyone should read.
patricia wants to cuddle, samantha allen - lesbians and furry little monsters. weird as fuck and so funny.
penance, eliza clark - reflections on true crime and the rivalries between teenage girls. gruesome and fascinating.
not forever but for now, chuck palahniuk - MY MAN RETURNED!!!! and i am so goddamn grateful. nauseating but stunning. masterpiece as always.
house of hunger, alexis henderson - gothic vampire novel with a touch of haunted house story and eerie lesbians.
sign here, claudia lux - one of the funniest books i’ve read in a LONG time. selling your soul to the devil is basically the same as working for capitalist organizations.
the child thief, gerald brom - HORRIFYING version of peter pan. brom always makes me utterly nauseous and i am ovsessed with him in every way.
the girls, emma cline - 60’s cult vibes, true crime, just a solid piece of literature.
angels before man, rafael nicolas - basically gay bible. 10/10.
silver under nightfall, rin chupeco - poly queer vampires. gritty gore. amazing world building. cannot WAIT for the sequel.
none shall sleep, ellie marney - me? enjoying crime fiction from someone other than karin slaughter or tana french? it IS, apparently, possible.
house of leaves, mark z danielewski - IT IS ABOUT! THE! SYMBOLISM! I WANT TO YELL.

Books I’d recommend based on your favourite Hazbin hotel character:
Angel dust: (sorry his recommendations aren’t too plentiful, I know he’s a lot of people’s favourite but I just don’t think of him as being an avid reader so I haven’t attached him to a lot of books.)
- Obviously there’s The Godfather trilogy but anything by Mario Puzo I would also recommend for the Italian mafia links
- Giorgio Bassani’s The Gold Rimmed Spectacles (yes, it’s because it’s both Italian and gay, stfu)
- Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima
- The Ragged Trousers Philanthropists
- Naked Lunch William S. Burroughs
- Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh (I’m sorry I had to, it’s got drugs)
Husk: woof, do I have a lot of suggestions for him! I headcanon him as an avid reader and the time that he would have been alive is my absolute favourite literary period, so, here we go.
- ANYTHING by Charles Bukowski
- Anything by Ernest Hemingway
- Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
- On The Road by Jack Kerauc
- Queer by William S. Burroughs
- The Stranger by Albert Camus
- Diary of an Oxygen Thief (don’t come for me there has to be a reason he’s in hell)
- The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
- The Master and The Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
- The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
- Down and Out in London and Paris by George Orwell
- Another Country by James Baldwin
- Giovannis Room by James Baldwin
- Stoner by John Williams
I could just go on and on with this one so I’m gonna have to leave this here.
Alastor:
- obviously anything by Fitzgerald because he is the king of swing
- Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
- The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen (I think he’d find the plot to be a great source of inspiration)
- Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
- American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis (I had to)
- Nausea by John Paul Satre
- Tender is The Flesh by Augustina Bazterrica (obviously I had to include some cannibalism)
- No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai
- Trust by Hernan Diaz
- i also feel like he’d be a big Daphne Du Maurier fan and i base this on absolutely nothing
(I will gladly continue with the other characters if people actually want that because this is so fun for me)

Louise is happy Kayleigh approves of her in a letter to her mum. Ivan is back with Simon renewing their friendship.

Her karedeki yaratık aynı nakaratı tekrarlıyordu: “Ye, iç, yaşa, üre.
