Damn, what a stacked production job. Elk City could deluge a room with this EP. a victory of sorta-psych maximalism. It crunches when it wants to (witness the nine-minute kickoff “Take Me Out”), and it gets swankly syncopated (on “Three Ears,” but with requisite 'm-at-the-show-and-on-my-third-cheap-brew-and-it's-good-but-nobody-loves-me asexuality, natch). Played loud enough (Have you heard one of those little Bose systems? I want one.), it'll make you shudder. As much as I'm sick of the whole singing saw conceit, when The Music Tapes’ Julian Koster kicks in on one during “Bar Song.” I understand how it initially caught on. Now, if Elk City had a real singer to replace the congested indie boy and vampy Patti Smith wannabe that keeps stumbling in and lifting the enjoyable haze the music creates, it might do amazing things.
