As much as Brie enjoyed a crowd, these days she found herself needing to step outside for a bit of air more often than she cared to admit. She knew she needed to give up smoking -- It was a nasty habit she'd picked up in private school, and couldn't quite kick as an adult. The blonde found that the cool Chicago air was complemented by the smell of cigarette smoke. Plus, it gave her a moment to herself. What she hadn't expected as she stepped outside, was to find Elio already out there with a cigarette of his own. Eyes narrow as she gets a better look at him, lighting the cigarette between her teeth before she speaks. He'd gone on smoke breaks with her before, but she knew he only actually picked up a cigarette if he was stressed. "You look like shit." She comments simply, taking a deep inhale of her cigarette, arms crossed over her chest. Briefly, she wished she'd worn something with a bit more coverage -- At least the cigarette and alcohol will keep her warm. "What are you doing out here?"

Wren waved his apology off, she often did whenever somebody apologized for something that they had zero control over. "The experience made me stronger as a person." She shrugged although at that age she should have been protected and not going through experiences that would force her to become stronger. "I plan to make it to the neighboring states." She spoke "Or if you want to double as a tour guide when you aren't to busy pleasing tastebuds" She hummed. She wasn't sure if it was something that would interest Elio but she wanted to put it out there that she wouldn't mind seeing him again once this night ended. She thought that it was going well but wanted to gage the mans interest without flat out asking his opinion.

"No, that's actually really sad. I'm sorry that happened to you. I feel like as kids we all imagine how much fun it would be to be locked somewhere over night, when it's probably just creepy and boring. Like you realized. I'm sorry it scared you so much. Like I can't do anything about it now, but I feel your pain at thinking dolls are creepy. I'm okay with animatronics, but those little porcelain ones are unsettling." Elio said, a little concerned but trying not to show it. He didn't want to ruin the vibe but he did feel bad that Wren went through that. "Hopefully that can change soon. Even if you just go a state up or down, there's things to do and see. You'd be surprised what's right in your own backyard."

Cuba, en camino de unirse a Haití

LA HABANA, Cuba.- Cuba ha quedado devastada. Los llamados al sacrificio y la resistencia emitidos por el general-presidente Raúl Castro el 9 y 10 de septiembre exasperan a los cubanos, que lo vieron por última vez en la televisión al recibir al ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de España el 7 de septiembre. La Habana no tiene restablecida la electricidad en amplias áreas de Miramar, Plaza (Vedado), y la mayor parte del país está apagado.

El vicepresidente Díaz-Canel estuvo en Artemisa el 12 de septiembre, según reportaron los medios. Las reuniones del Consejo de Defensa Nacional para la Reducción de Desastre continúan presididos por el vicepresidente Ramiro Valdés, acompañado del ministro de las Fuerzas Armadas Leopoldo Cintra Frías,  el presidente de la Asamblea Nacional Esteban Lazo y la primera secretaria del Partido Comunista en La Habana Mercedes López Acea.

No existen posibilidades económicas de reconstrucción a corto plazo y Cuba podría unirse a Haití entre los más pobres del mundo. No son exageraciones. Había continuado el decrecimiento económico iniciado en 2016, sin dinero en las arcas (liquidez) ni artículos para exportar, pero con la importación hasta de la mayoría de los productos alimenticios que podrían lograrse en el país. El férreo control estatal, el ineficiente sistema, el pánico a cambios que debiliten el poder absoluto imperante desde 1959 y las inmensas trabas a la iniciativa personal provocaban la involución de una nación, antes ubicadas entre las más dinámicas e innovadoras del mundo.

El drama humano recién comenzó.  Millones de personas están damnificadas, por la pérdida total o parcial de sus viviendas, más allá del 50% antes contabilizado en  mal o regular estado, las escasas y vetustas pertenencias, los aperos de labranza, las siembras y los animales. El sistema electroenergético nacional colapsó por primera vez en la historia de Cuba, se carece de agua y muchas zonas permanecen inundadas e incomunicadas.

Entre las principales afectaciones reportadas oficialmente se encuentran las viviendas, la agricultura, la ganadería y las granjas de gallinas ponedoras de huevos; la Empresa Agroindustrial CEBALLOS de Camagüey con pérdidas significativas en naranja, toronja y limón de exportación y para el procesamiento in situ; pérdida de más del 40% de las plantaciones de caña  y 4 000 toneladas de azúcar de los almacenes, grandes afectaciones en 20 de los 56 centrales azucareros en uso, de ellos 13 en muy graves, como el coloso Central Brasil-Jaronu donde ademas el  90% de las viviendas fueron afectadas y en su reparto Moscú de 200 casas solo 10 quedaron; la central electroenergética Antonio Guiteras de Matanzas, que produce el 25% de la energía eléctrica consumida por Cuba; las instalaciones turísticas en los polos con el mayor desarrollo, concentrados en la cayería norte de Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus y Villa Clara, así como Varadero, Holguín, Cienfuegos y el sur de Camagüey aunque con estragos menos severos.

El turismo es la tercera fuente de ingresos del país, después de las remesas y la exportación de servicios, fundamentalmente médicos. Su desarrollo está priorizado como industria con las mayores posibilidades de aporte a la economía. En la primera mitad de 2017 llegaron 3 millones de visitantes y se aspiraba a sobrepasar 4,2 millones. En  2016 se elevó a 4 002 317 visitantes, de ellos 281 706 estadounidenses contra 161 233 el año anterior. Los ingresos fueron 3 068 900 dólares, aunque una parte elevada se pierde por las importaciones para abastecerlo. Raúl Castro en el llamamiento emitido el 10 de septiembre expresó que “las afectaciones serán recupe­radas antes del inicio de la temporada alta. Contamos para ello con los recursos humanos y materiales requeridos, por constituir una de las principales fuentes de ingreso de la economía nacional”.

La población teme que los recursos se dediquen con prioridad a la reconstrucción de las instalaciones turísticas y la rehabilitación del país sea relegada.  Aun personas albergadas durante varios lustros permanecen en albergues, y existe muy pocas posibilidades de reconstrucción privada por la carencia de ahorros y venta de suficientes materiales.

El gobierno probablemente tendrá que solicitar una moratoria al pago de las deudas negociadas en el marco de las condonaciones, mientras procura apoyo para lograr créditos a corto plazo. La alimentación y las condiciones higiénico-sanitarias son muy limitadas actualmente, y si no se libera el trabajo y las inversiones privadas, así como la participación ciudadana en la toma de decisiones habrán serias consecuencias humanitarias y económicas.

In the time Brie had known Elio, it'd become clear he's as social as she is -- He seemed to thrive around people. Or at least, he put up a convincing front in her eyes. Seeing him outside felt out of place, just as the cigarette between his fingers did. Brie takes a deep inhale, turning her head away from him so that she doesn't blow smoke into Elio's face. "I try," she teases, laughing lightly at her own words. A brow arches at his short explanation, unable to help the curiosity that comes with it. Her buzz has her wanting to pry for information more than normal. "Something happen?" She questions simply, accepting his suit jacket without a quick thank you. The warmth that follows has her shoulders relaxing, realizing just how chilly the initial temperature changing from indoor to outdoor made her. "I'm feeding a nasty habit," she says as if it's obvious, eyes rolling playfully as she holds up the hand with her cigarette. "And some drunk asshole tried to grab my ass, so it seemed like a good time for a break." Brie notes, shrugging a shoulder. "What are you hiding from? Or should I say, who?" The blonde questions, knowing that since she'd run into to Elio's ex, he probably has too.

Elio had been outside for the better part of an hour. The party around him had ben loud and warm, and usually that was enough to get him through a night with strangers who didn't stay strangers for long. But tonight there was something off. It was suffocating. The furthest thing from an introvert, Elio found himself wishing for his empty apartment and a reality tv show instead of a party. Sitting with a cigarette between his fingers and his buzz slowly fading, the man glanced up when he heard a voice behind him. "Wow, thank you so much," Elio mused, glancing back out into nothing as Brie joined him. "You really know how to make a man feel good about himself. I wanted some air," He explained, glancing beside him and seeing how she crossed her arms over her chest. Tossing the cigarette into the dirt in front of him, Elio shouldered off his suit jacket and tossed it over Brie's shoulders. "What are you doing out here? Y'not really dressed for the elements,"

"I once was locked inside of a Chucky Cheese overnight when I was like ten... does that count?" Wren questioned with a chuckle. The wine was definitely doing its job, causing her to feel a little more relaxed, dropping her guard a little bit more than a totally sober Wren would agree with. "Those animatronics scarred me for life." She admitted "In fact I'm still freaked out by dolls to this day." She admitted. "With their beady little eyes that stare straight into your soul." she shivered with a shake of her head. "I haven't been much of anywhere." she admitted after a heart beat, at least nowhere further than a bus ride." She had always wanted to travel, had places on her bucket list that she wanted to check off but the time had simply never seemed right... well that and the fact that it wasn't a cheap hobby to have.

"That's actually so adorable. Little baby Wren, chasing butterflies, meanwhile the ball soars into the goal." Elio laughed, taking another sip of his drink before putting it on the coffee table. It seemed like any awkwardness was gone. "I like to, yeah. When I went to culinary school I was able to travel with my class. We went all over Europe together and it was super immersive. I felt like Anthony Bourdain, trying everything I could stuff into my mouth. Now I don't go away as much, but I always like doing it. Even if it's just a little weekend away. Some of my friends are here, but some are all over. It's a mix. Have you been anywhere cool?"

"I was never a sports kind myself." She admitted "Nearly flunked gym in the sixth grade because I was to busy picking flowers and chasing butterflies when we were meant to be playing soccer." She smiled. She thought it was an accomplishment these days, I mean who flunks gym class? She didn't necessarily excel in other subjects either if they were being completely honest. "Do you travel a lot?" Wren questioned. It would explain the whole having friends scattered across the globe thing. "Or did your friends just move away to fulfill their own desires?" She questioned. Conversating was so easy with Elio she felt like she wanted to know everything that there was to learn about this man sitting beside her.

"Oh sure, you can't escape stuff like that if you're the baby of a family." Elio shrugged, fiddling with the end of his sleeve. But then she leaned into him, and some of his nervousness went away. "Yeah, it was pretty nice. I mean, my parents were well enough off that all of us had separate rooms growing up, which was probably for the best. I mean the amount of stuff Stella had alone, I woud've been squished into a corner. But being the boy was cool, my dad definitely tried to get me into sports and we played a lot outside. I'm not very athletic, I like swimming and I can play tennis. But that's about it." He laughed, telling Wren about the disastrous attempt at football when he was a kid. The other team came running and Elio ran off the field. "Exactly! I'm lucky to have so many friends I can count on. I wish they weren't scattered across the globe, but what can you do."

Wren couldn't help the smile that spread across her lips at Elio's stories. She was sure that at the time he had loathed his sisters for these things but somewhere along the way they had become stories he'd grown fond of. She could tell simply by the tone of his voice. "I still had hand me downs." she corrected him "You know older cousins and what not." she spoke. The second part might have been a lie but she had grown up swimming in clothes that never truly belonged to her. She had had a small bag to her name, everything else that she was given was dependent on what home she was staying in at the time. Wren couldn't help but laugh at the image of a tall Elio squished into the middle seat of the car at his sisters demand. "Yeah but I'm sure that being the only boy probably had it's perks too. Like having your own room?" She questioned. That's how it had always been for her growing up. Children were usually shoved into rooms depending on age and gender so if you were the only boy or girl you automatically had your own space. The small arm trick hadn't gone unnoticed by Wren but she found herself leaning make into Elio a little more out of instinct. "I mean they do say that friends are the family that you get to choose." she nodded before taking a sip from her wine glass once again.

"That's not bad though. You never had to share anything or wear hand-me-downs. Well actually, I didn't have hand-me-downs, considering I was a boy. But the idea's the same. You probably never had to sit on the hump in the backseat. Once I was out of the car seat, Stella forced me to sit in the middle. I think she was mad that she was squished when I was a baby. It got really funny when I started to get taller." Elio said with a smirk, resting back against the couch. He extended his arm around the back, so if he felt like things were going well, he could drop it down to Wren's shoulder. It was cheesy but it got results. "That sounds great, I think it's nice that you found her and you two are so close. I have a few friendships like that and they mean the world to me. I think being out here on my own, away from my parents and in charge of my own life, helped me see how important it is to have a good network of friends."

"Sadly no, I'm an only child." She hummed. In all honesty she didn't know. She didn't know if her biological parents had any other children before or after her. She had had a few foster siblings in her time that she had once considered to be family. "I have a best friend Juniper though." She admitted "She's the closest thing that I've had to a sibling... the sister that I got to choose you know?" she spoke with a smile. "She'll grill you better than any sibling ever could when the two of you have the pleasure of meeting." she chuckled at the thought. She knew Juniper would pick him apart for Wren's sake but would ultimately come to the same conclusion that she was coming to herself. Elio was a stand up guy, someone that she wouldn't mind keeping around for a little while. She couldn't lie she was slightly intimidated by Elio's description of his sisters alone. They seemed incredible and like two people who would protect their brother with everything in them.

Elio smiled and refilled her glass, placing a gentle hand on her back to lead her to his living room. It wasn't very decorated, Elio spent most of his time at work, but the couch was nice. It was soft and squishy and easy to relax on. "I have two sisters, older. They're amazing. Like super smart and capable, honestly a little intimidating when you first meet them. Selene definitely, she's the oldest and she's actually very kind, but she's got that cold CEO thing going on. Stella is super welcoming to new people but she's a therapist so sometimes she'll psychoanalyzing you without meaning to. I think they'd like you though, you're a good person." He said, after a moment's thought. Wren would have to learn to be a little louder if she wanted to match his sister's but he liked her easy-going nature. He liked that she wasn't super boisterous. He got that enough elsewhere. "What about you? Do you have brothers or sisters?"

Wren smiled softly when Elio ensured her that there was no pressure to move into the living room if she wasn't feeling it. It was a nice reassurance. Elio seemed like the perfect gentleman so the idea had never even crossed her mind that he was trying to be brash with his suggestion. "I'll take a little more wine." She smiled "And I wouldn't mind moving to the living room, I'm a creature of comfort after all." She nodded as she stood up, bringing the glass over for him to fill. She was glad that Elio's family seemed to be in support of the arts. It seemed that they wouldn't stick their noses up at the path she had chosen in life when they met for the first time. Of course if they ever made it to that stage. Once her glass was topped off she sat with him on his couch. "You said sisters, plural, how many siblings do you have?" She asked. She knew she was treading rocky waters by asking the question. Knew that asking him about his family meant that she was opening the door for Elio to question her about her own but for some reason she didn't feel like she had to hide her truth from this guy.

"Excellent, it's all coming together." Elio said, steepling his fingers together like an evil villain before breaking into giggles. They were both done with their food at this point, the meal sitting pleasantly in his stomach. "Did you want more? Or another glass of wine?" He asked, holding up the bottle. He poured himself a little more and got up to put away whatever leftovers he had. "Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. I remember when I used to visit my sisters at college, my parents would also go see the student art galleries or shows. They thought it was very important to support the newest artists. I guess, they wanted to show me that they were okay with me choosing that field if that's what I wanted. I definitely thought about it, but some stuff happened and I realized I like being a chef more." He said, wiping down the counters while talking. He wasn't trying to rush Wren, but he needed to keep his space clean. "Did you want to go relax in the living room?" He asked, then realized how it sounded. "We can stay in here too, no pressure."
